One of the most unusual "best of" collections you'll ever own – given that it features material pulled together from seven different albums by Ben LaMar Gay – none of which were ever released! The package is more of a debut than anything else – and a hell of a musical statement, too – as Ben's music is almost completely without referent – and that's saying a lot, given the already genre-busting nature of other releases on the International Anthem label! We might list the music under jazz – as it does feature some jazz instrumentation – but there's also lots of electronic elements too, often used in these shape-shifting ways that criss cross with other elements – like bass clarinet, flute, viola, and voice – all kind of crashing together in waves of sonic energy that embrace multiple genres at once, but never have the hokey result of other music that might try to do such a thing. A stunning set of punk jazz, and one that maybe hearkens back to key experiments of this nature from the 80s scene – particularly some of the more groundbreaking work on the New York downtown scene! Ava Mendoza plays electric guitar and Devi Hoff play electric bass – but the pair also work here with excellent tenor from James Brandon Lewis, whose presence really balances out the fuzzier electric energy in a great way – different lines, different sounds, and a balance that never has Lewis trying to match the guitars for ferocity, which is a real plus. The quartet also features great drums from Ches Smith – and titles include "The Stumble", "Interwhining", "Dyscalculia", "Babel 17", "New Ghosts", and "Ten Forward". CD

A groundbreaking album, put together by Zorn and a group of downtown New York hipsters, as a fitting hommage to the genius of Ennio Morricone! The track list sticks to mostly the bigger known numbers, and the album's got a darkness that we'd actually say was a bit out of place, considering the choice of tracks – but the groups formed by Zorn do a pretty good job of breathing new life into some of the tracks, and the album was a key moment in the recognition of Morricone as one of the century's greatest composers. Players include Robert Quine, Tim Berne, Arto Lindsay, Jim Staley, Bill Frisell, Christian Marclay, Anton Fier, and even Big John Patton. Titles include "Erotico", "Once Upon A Time In The West", "Giu La Testa", "Battle Of Algiers", and "The Big Gundown". CD

A fantastic record by one of the great lost trumpet talents of the 60s – and a key album on the Chicago scene of the time too! Gene "Clarence" Shaw played with Mingus, until the big one scared him away, and he fled to Chicago and started recording LPs for Argo. All of the LPs are great, and this one's a rare treat featuring a cool set of compositions and arrangements by Richard Evans that have a groovy Latiny feel to them. Evans plays bass, and Charles Stepney's on vibes. Shaw is stunning throughout, and this set makes you wonder why Mingus didn't come out to Chicago and re-hire him on the spot. Cuts include "Ain't That Soul", "Goin Back Home", "Goin' Downtown", and "Cha Bossa". Tough one to find! CD

Raspy guitar from James Blood Ulmer – cut right at the end of the 80s decade when he was clearly one of the most inventive players on his instrument! The set's got a quality that's similar to some of James' other records from the US of the time – as it's trying to branch out to a wider audience through the use of beats and vocals on many numbers – picking up plenty of the funky undercurrents that were going on in the New York downtown black rock scene! That later modifier definitely comes into play here – as Ulmer puts aside some of his freer jazz styles for more tuneful, song-based modes that highlight the vocals as much as the guitar. Titles include "Boss Machine", "Baby Snatcher", "I Don't Know Why", "She Ain't So Cold", "Peace & Happiness", and "Calling Marry". CD

londie had a lot to live up to after Parallel Lines, but they pulled it off here – Eat To The Beat is another classic! Downtown cool, a strong sense of pop history and tight production by Mike Chapman make for a really distinct sound on this one. Standouts include the excellent opener "Dreaming" (one of the finest Harry/Stein songs ever, if you ask us), the punky title track, "Union City Blue" and "Accidents Never Happen", and while Blondie albums are by nature hit-and-miss given the fearless mish-mash of styles they always brought in, the whole thing is pretty great! Other tracks include "Shayla", "Die Young Stay Pretty" and "Living In The Real World". CD

Ernie Freeman and Jimmy Bowen put together the title cut, but Nelson Riddle and Sonny Burke do a great job following the whole thing up – using a nice touch of organ in the mix, and lilting the bottom ever so slightly to swing things past some of the more lush Sinatra modes of years past. Way more than just the usual punk collection you might expect – not just LA hardcore or New York downtown, and instead a really wide range of work from the American underground of the 70s – including some really key tracks by artists who were working in a punkish mode a few years before the style ever had a name! Soul Jazz have really done an excellent job with this set – scanning a wealth of rare indie singles to come up with a set of tracks that virtually writes the history of the emergence of punk rock on the American shores – work that owes very little to the UK wave, and which instead really reflects the unique hybrid of styles that infected US material from the start. Barbara Dennerlein looks like she's in some fashion ad on the cover, but the organist is very much a top-shelf musician throughout – working here in all these new modes for the Hammond, at a level that made her a key force in helping to raise the instrument back to prominence in the 90s! All tracks are originals, and the sound has echoes of older soul jazz modes, but also all these new ideas from jazz of the 80s – served up with some especially nice touches from Ray Anderson on trombone, in a quintet that also includes Bob Berg on tenor, Mitch Watkins on guitar, and Dennis Chambers on drums. One of the grooviest albums we've ever heard from West Indian trumpeter Shake Keane – a player who's known both for his modern jazz work of the early 60s and his poppier sides of later years – but who's stepping out here in a great blend of both! The format is misleadingly simple, as many of the tracks on the set are 60s covers – making you think that Shake's just going for an easy groove – but amidst the more familiar numbers are also some key originals that step out in an oddly rhythmic way, and which get some unusual inflections from a group that includes either Stan Tracey or Pat Smythe on piano, Bob Efford on tenor and oboe, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Bobby Orr on drums. Shake himself plays flugelhorn on a number of tracks, in a way that evokes some of Art Farmer's excellent Columbia work of the mid 60s – which is also in a similar mode – and although the feel is bright on some tracks, it also has an underlying depth that's extremely compelling – a mix of sweet and dark that we really like. Highlights include the piano-grooving "Fidel", which has some excellent offbeat work from Tracey; a lightly tripping take on Joe Harriott's "Morning Blue"; and the beautifully thematic "New Sunday". Other tracks include "As Tears Go By", "Colours", "Girl", and "Downtown". CD

Klaus Nomi's standing here on the cover with the oversized cabaret costume he used famously backing David Bowie – but this early solo album definitely has the singer very much in his own territory overall! Some of the songs are a weird reworking of older European cabaret mode, or Brechtian song ideas – given this strange post-punk twist, and set to rockish backings that are a very unusual contrast to the more operatic leanings in Klaus' vocal style – almost this Liquid Sky moment where an amnesiac opera singer wanders into a downtown New York club and happens to take the stage. Other tracks are moodier and more spacious – and work together with the straighter rock songs to make the whole thing feel like a larger conceptual album, even though that sort of thing wasn't really what Klaus, or the rest of the scene were going for at the time. Titles include "Nomi Song", "You Don't Own Me", "Nomi Chant", "Total Eclipse", "The Cold Song", and "Keys of Life". CD

At one level, Dani could be a classic vocalist from older jazz years – but the backings on the set hearken more towards a New York downtown style of the early 80s – a bit electronic, a bit avant, but also still soulful and swinging throughout. The approach is really unique – far better than the usual "female vocalist with beats" sound that seemed to come across endlessly in the post-trip hop years – and overall, Dani seems like a much deeper artist with a heck of a lot to offer in years to come! Some of the most compelling grooves the Talking Heads ever recorded – a set that sparkles with imaginative touches, and railroads forward on a wave of complicated rhythms! The sound is brilliant throughout – a genre-less approach that sheds the group's earlier art nerd aesthetic for one that's clearly influenced by late 70s funk and club – but takes that influence in a whole new direction! The whole thing's even fresher than some of the artier downtown moments that bubbled around at the time – as David Byrne and the group actually managed to cross over big with the record – hitting not only urban markets, but also getting some play from the classic rock crowd too. Excellent work from Steve Coleman and his Five Elements group – just the sort of record that reminds us why Coleman's records for the past few decades have always been ones to catch! Steve works in this beautifully angular mode that seems to take some of the jazz changes from the downtown early 80s scene, and re-fuse them with new energy that's helped them make the journey to the 21st Century – kind of a newly-fresh approach to rhythmic expression, given a deeper soul. Jen Shyu adds some great vocals to the group – sometimes singing a mode you might her on 70s Strata East – sometimes hitting more adventurous notes, ala Jeanne Lee – and other instrumentation includes Coleman's alto, trumpet from Jonathan Finlayson, trombone from Tim Albright, bass from Thomas Morgan, and drums from Tyshawn Sorey. Really striking solo work from Anthony Moore – especially when you consider that he began his career serving up art work in Slapp Happy and Henry Cow, then later collaborated a bit with Pink Floyd in the 80s! Yet here, Moore's in stark, dark territory that's really telegraphed by the cover image – a bit post-punk, but maybe more in the style of the New York downtown scene than you'd guess from Anthony's work on the UK scene – tunes that are well-penned enough to be catchy, but full of all sorts of jagged edges on the guitars – and delivered with a stripped-down vibe that's hardly art rock at all – save maybe for the sound of the more art-driven underground of the NYC scene. At the same time, there's also maybe a bit of a Swell Maps spirit going on here – but only in the way that makes the music so much more individual than so much of its company at the time. Titles include "Time Less Strange", "War", "Just Us", "Caught Being In Love", "Judy Get Down", "Ready Ready", and "Useless Moments". CD
