Citrus SunPeople Of Tomorrow ... CD
Dome (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $16.99
A really sweet set from this Incognito side project – a group who are even jazzier than usual work from Bluey and crew! The album's mostly instrumental – save for some great guest vocals from Valerie Etienne – and the focus is on longer solos on keyboards, guitar, and trumpet – all spun out over the kind of classic grooves you'd expect from Incognito! Think of the record as a jazz fusion project from the late 70s, with some R&B undercurrents – just the kind of set that only a rare few like Bluey could do so well. Valerie sings on a great cover of Terry Callier's "What Color Is Love", and the album also features an instrumental take on "What's Going On", plus the tracks "Yesterday Detroit", "Cooking With Walter", "Tonight We Dance", "Mais Uma Vez", and "People Of Tomorrow". Don-ELittle Star ... CD
Dome (UK), 2013. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the leading lights of the UK underground soul scene – back again in very fine formation, and coming across with a style that's even deeper and more mature than before! Don-E wrote and performed most of the tracks on the set himself, and also produced – in an effort that's got him following strongly in the London legacy of Omar – another one word-named soul artist who might be a good comparison to Don-E here! The vibe is definitely different – maybe a bit smoother and warmer in the end – but Don-E's got this great sense of confidence and class that never pushes things too far – and which really avoids any of the pitfalls that might hold back some of his less careful contemporaries. Titles include "Spiritual" – which features guest work from an all-star UK lineup that includes Omar, Carl McIntosh, Noel McKoy, and Junior Giscombe – plus "BS", "Home", "Hold On", "Slave To The Rhythm", "Little Star", "It Just Don't Stop", and "Step In My Room". George DukeDuke ... CD
BPM/Dome (UK), 2005. New Copy ... $9.99
A recent album from the legendary George Duke, and a great one too – put together with a sense of soul and sound that really recalls some of Duke's best work of the late 70s! The album's got a wonderful balance between electric and acoustic elements – especially at points when George puts the keyboards aside, and steps out on acoustic piano – creating lines that ring out proudly amidst the warm backdrops of the group. George also handles some Fender Rhodes on the record, with a very old school vibe – and in addition to his own lead vocals, the set also features backups from Eric Benet, Howard Hewett, Jim Gilstrap, and Rachelle Ferrell. Titles include a sweet remake of "Superwoman", plus "No One", "T-jam", "Sausalito", "Saturday Night", "Hybrids", "Homeland", and "Trust". CD

IncognitoCan't Get You Out Of My Head (orig, Brand New Heavies Trunk Funk rmx, Venom'z Ghetto Soul rmx, video) ... CD
Dome (UK), 2003. Used ... $4.99
One of the best tracks off Incognito's excellent Who Needs Love album – remixed nicely! The original version is a smooth little groover with a really deep feel – and on the Brand New Heavies mix, the track gets a bit more of an 80s sort of beat approach – pumped up, but not too much so, with some nice bass pedal work! Vemom'z mix adds in more beats too – but cools down the other elements, and overall gives the track a nice kicked back kind of feel! CD

Dome (UK), 2004. Used ... $4.99
A great remake of the classic "Listen To The Music" – lifted from Incognito's Black Sunshine album, and served up here in a sparkling remix by Ski Oakenfull! The original's great enough, but the new mix has some very kicking beats – and it's backed here by the nicely tippling "Principles Of Love" – a catchy soulful glower with some great snapping drums at the bottom! Nu Mecca/Dome (UK), 2002. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The amazing first album from Conya Doss – a groundbreaking album from the first wave of the Neo Soul revolution – finally back out on CD! On this first album, Conya's already at the top of her game – really moving forward past more familiar modes of singers like Jill Scott or Erykah Badu – and showing that poise and professionalism can still have a nice sort of edge when recorded in the right way! Instrumentation features great keyboards and gentle beats – nicely set up to allow Conya's vocals to dominate strongly, yet never in a way that's too showy, or too overdone. Titles include "Good Good", "You Really Hurt Me", "One More Try", "Coffee", "Starship", "All Because Of You", and "That's Not Love". CD

New IncognitoAdventures In Black Sunshine ... CD
Dome/Narada, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Is it us, or does Incognito just get better and better with each new record? It's been over 2 decades since Bluey first recorded under the Incognito name, but that doesn't mean that he's been sitting on his laurels at all – because this gem of an album has him sounding better than even on some of his classics from years back! The groove is sweetly soulful, with a jazzy undercurrent that hearkens back to the best west coast soul of the 70s – and Bluey's got the group honed to perfection, playing with a razor-sharp edge that keeps the tunes as funky as they are soulful! Vocals are by Maysa and Tony Momrelle – and tracks include "Don't Turn My Love Away", "This Thing Called Love", "The Principles Of Love", "Everything Your Heart Desires", "Close My Eyes", "25th Chapter", and "Mr Jones". Wonderfully warm soul from Full Flava – a UK group with the same commitment to classic modes we love in the music of Incognito! Unlike Incognito, Full Flava have never gotten huge exposure on our shores – which makes this music mighty fresh, even though the set's a collection of older work – and a lot like Incognito, Full Flava often use different female singers in the lead – which gives their grooves a great sense of variety, thanks to super-strong guest appearances from vocalists who include Chantay Savage, Donna Gardier, Carleen Anderson, Ruby Turner, Kelli Sae, Ce Ce Peniston, Joy Rose, and Beverlei Brown – each of whom get a chance to shine on at least one track in this collection! Titles include "September", "Love's Comin At Ya", "The Glow Of Love", "Too Much Too Late", "I Need You Tonight (tonight's the night rmx)", "Was That All It Was", "You Are The Universe (universal truth rmx)", "Last Time", and "Change". Emerald Web/Sam Mcloughlin & Alison CooperGarden Of Mirrors/Supernatural Lancashire Vol 2 ... LP
Disposable (UK), Mid 80s/2013. New Copy ... $22.99
A wonderful split set of sound library work – very much in keeping with the best Finders Keepers impulses behind this limited series! Side one features music by Emerald Web – a set of electronic tracks used for 80s planetarium projects – very moody and slightly spooky, with a weirdly unsettling quality that really echoes the experience of sitting in the dark with a bunch of strangers, tilting back to watch projected stars on the ceiling of a dome! The quality is one that's hard to describe if you've never had the planetarium experience – but Emerald Web really get it right, on tracks that include "Freefall", "Dreamspun", "Emergence", "Through The Garden Of Mirrors", and "Doppler Bells 2". Side two is titled Supernatural Lancashire – and features a really spooky take on pastoral sounds of England – served up in this eerie mix of acoustic and electric instrumentation that feels like scene-setting music for The Wicker Man! Titles include "The Fox Moth", "Hleapan", "Strikers Steal Into Sight", "Lunaris", and "Consumed By Opal Waters". LP, Vinyl record album

Frankie Goes To HollywoodWelcome To the Pleasuredome ... LP
ZTT/Island, 1984. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $2.99
Arguably one of the greatest concept albums of the 80s – and the only really strong full length album cut by Frankie Goes To Hollywood! At the time of the set, the group was riding high on the success and controversy of their singles "Relax" and "Two Tribes" – but in the ambitious ZTT mode, sought to expand their sound way past familiar hits, and into a realm of sonic exploration that rivaled that of labelmates Art Of Noise. Don't get us wrong, because the Frankie of this album is still very much in groove-oriented territory – but they also let Horn take over with some more striking tunes that are both longer and shorter than the usual pop track – offsetting the vocal numbers on the record with a rich tapestry of musical backdrops that also more firmly forward the group's social and sexual leanings. The album features surprising covers of "War", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", and "Born To Run" – plus the hits "Relax" and "Two Tribes", and the original numbers "Welcome To the Pleasure Dome", "Krisco Kisses", "The Ballad Of 32", "Wish The Lads Were Here", "Black Night White Light", "The Only Star In Heaven", "The Power Of Love", and "Bang". Rufus without Chaka Khan – but a surprisingly nice set, nonetheless! The album features various members of the group on lead vocals – singing in a warm, compressed style that's got the same sort of AOR sound as the group's jazzy grooves at the time. The overall musicianship is still quite nice – a commercial take on jazz funk, but played to perfection, thanks to the tightness of the ensemble. Titles include the instrumental "Red Hot Poker", plus "Dancin Mood", "Don't You Sit Alone", "Bet My Dreams", "Pleasure Dome", and "Life In The City". LP, Vinyl record album

Solid golden age of rap inspired rhymes and tight sample-based production from the Soundsci crew – on one of the finest full-fledged hip hop records from Ubiquity in years! Soundsci is the team of MCs Audessey, U-George, and Oxygen with producers Jonny Cuba and DJ Ollie Teeba – and for their first set for Ubiquity they're using some incredible source material for samples – namely the work of Mike James Kirkland and his Mike & The Censations material. It's addictive, inspired stuff! VariousBang The Box – The Lost Story Of AKA Dance Music Chicago 1987 to 1988 ... CD
AKA Dance Music/Still Music, Late 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $15.99 16.99
Bang the box – a classic battle cry from the glory days of Chicago house – summed up here perfectly with a stack of tracks from the short-lived AKA Music label! The package follows strongly in the mode of Still Music's Kill Yourself Dancing set – and like that one, it offers up a really great look at a tiny label from the Windy City club scene – an imprint who cut some key tracks that barely made it out of the midwest, but which really helped to shape the house-heavy rhythms that went onto inspire countless artists in years to come! AKA only issued records for two short years in the mid 80s – but they really helped push some of the leaner, cleaner Chicago house modes that were bursting into the limelight in the acid years – those cool keyboards and dark beats that still stand out as some of the best elements from the classic years. The notes do a great job of telling the story from the perspective of the clubs and the streets – and titles include "Rock It" by Matt Warren & Michaelangelo, "Bang The Box (bang the house mix)" by Matt Warren, "Take Me Higher (ultimate acid mix" by Nexus 6, "Lost In The World" by Michaelangelo, "The Music's Got Me (club mix)" by Team, "Pleasure Dome (house mix)" by Modern Mechanical Music, "Don't Bring Back Memories" by Matt Warren & Michaelangelo, and "Alternative House" by Michaelangelo. New Don CherryDon Cherry Live In Stockholm ... CD
Caprice (Sweden), 1968/1971. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Never heard music from Don Cherry's important time in Sweden – two different live recordings that explode with righteous power right from the very first note! Cherry really took off musically during his time in Sweden – exploring rich new ideas that had never come up in his music with Ornette Coleman, nor on his own American sides as well – really organic improvisations that blended together elements of the American underground with the new European free jazz, and some deeper ethnic touches as well! The first set of work here really showcases that mixture – as it features live material from 1968 with very freewheeling work by Cherry on pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano – plus Maffy Falay on trumpet and flutes, Bernt Rosengren and Tommy Koverhult on tenor and flute, Torbjorn Hulcrantz on bass, and Leif Wennerstrom on drums. The first part of the work is more all-out improv, but the second brings in some Turkish folk melodies supplied by Falay, which makes for some nice exotic elements. These are continued on "Another Dome Session", recorded in 1971 – material that has more of the Organic Music Society mix of collaborative acoustic elements, often with strongly spiritual currents. Cherry plays pocket trumpet, flutes, and piano again – and is joined by Maffy Falay on trumpet and flute, Tommy Koverhult on flute, and Okay Temiz on drums and percussion. Great package, with lots of music and notes on this time in Cherry's life! CD

Polydor, 1976. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
One of Roy Ayers' greatest albums of the 70s – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". CD

Amazing sounds from Gal Costa – a brilliant live album that follows strongly in the mode of her Recanto studio album! Like that set, this one features Gal in the most experimental style she's used in years – bits of electronics and contemporary underground modes layered in with her sublime vocals – all in ways that reopen that leftfield side of Costa's talents that have been buried for so many years! Some tracks are quite intimate and personal, others are very powerful – and the performance was put together by both Caetano and Moreno Veloso, with backing by a trio that also features percussion from Domenico too. Titles include "Tudo Gil", "Da Maior Importancia", "Mansidao", "Forca Estranha", "Meu Bem Mel Mal", "O Amor", "Baby", "Deus E O Amor", "Segunda", "Barato Total", and "Autotune Autoerotico". DVD features subtitles in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. DVD

Francesco De MasiSartana Non Perdona ... CD
Beat (Italy), 1968. New Copy ... $15.99
A great late 60s western score from Italian composer Francesco De Masi – hitting on all of favored sounds to accompany the best Italian made westerns of the era – rustic solo guitar, string-tightened tension, both lonely and densely orchestrated horns, and swaggery mood to spare! Excellent work that hits all the right notes – and it's got a groovy vocal opener, to boot! This CD marks the first ever release of the complete score, mastered from the original mono tapes. "Maybe Somwhere, Maybe Someday", plus "Non Potro Domenticare", "Sogni Ed Ombre Nell'Incubo", "La Pista Nella Sabbia", "Ecce Homo", "Triste E Sospeso", "Un Giorno Ti Pentirai", "Passagio Ne Nistero" and many more. Jonas KullhammarLat Det Vara ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2013. New Copy ... $18.99
An incredible step forward for reedman Jonas Kullhammar – an album that's put together as a summation of his feelings after taking a brief break from the recording business – but which also stands as one of his greatest moments to date! We've always loved Jonas' music, but there's a sense of power and majesty here that we've never heard before – at least not this clearly – an unbridled love of jazz-based expression, served up with longtime partners Torbjorn Gulz on piano, Torbjorn Zetterberg on bass, and Jonas Hongersson on drums. The vibrancy of these players has been documented before on other recordings by the quartet, but there's really something special going on here – possibly because the album's slated to be the group's last (as might be guessed by the Let It Be cover image), but also just because Kullhammar's tenor work is so expressive, so personal, and at the same time, so much more straightforward than ever before – a sound that will definitely get him the attention we've been saying he deserves for years – one of the greatest voices on his instrument of the past few decades. All material is played by the quartet – save for the title track, which features a larger group with guests who include Goran Kajfes on cornet, Per Rusktrask Johansson on alto, and Janne Kullhammar on drums – and titles include "Alvsalavals", "KBT", "Fodelsedagen", "Julaftonsfan", "Domedagen", and "Lat Det Vara". New Modern Jazz Quartet/Milt Jackson QuintetMJQ ... LP
Prestige, 1952/1954. Very Good ... $29.99
Nice stuff from the early days of the MJQ – recorded back when Kenny Clarke was still playing drums with the group, and giving them a bit more of a bottom! One side of the record features material recorded from one of the quartet's first sessions – in late 1952, with the tracks "La Ronde", "Vendome", and "Rose Of The Rio Grande". The rest of the record features material by Jackson's group with Horace Silver on piano, Percy Heath on bass, Kenny Clarke on drums, and the obscure Henry Boozier on trumpet. That material's a bit more bop-oriented, and titles include "Opus De Funk", "Buhania", and "Soma". LP, Vinyl record album

Alexander O'NealHearsay – All Mixed Up (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Tabu (UK), 1989. New Copy ... $11.99
A sweet set of remix tracks from Alexander O'Neal – and a package that takes the already-great soul vibe of his Hearsay album, and helps give it some deep new energy for the dancefloor! The album's different than the US version of All Mixed Up – with a different cover, title, and track list – and an overall approach that may well even be tighter than the domestic release, in that key way that the Brits had of putting just the right moves on a remix at the end of the 80s! Titles include "Fake 88 (house mix)", "What Can I Say To Make You Love Me (hateful club mix)", "Never Knew Love Like This (ext version)", "Criticize (Ben Liebrand rmx)", "The Lovers (ext mix)", "Criticize (rmx)", "What Can I Say To Make You Love Me (Ben Liebrand rmx)", and "Fake (ext rmx)". CD also features a great book-style package, with new notes in depth – and 3 bonus tracks that includes "You Were Meant To Be My Lady (88 Keith Cohen ext rmx)", "Innocent (88 Keith Cohen house mix)", and the 10 minute "Hit Mix (Official Bootleg Megamix)". Enrico RavaElectric Five ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1995. Used ... $13.99
Enrico Rava's no stranger to electric work – and although an acoustic player himself, often makes great use of electric instruments to really help expand the sound of his music! The electricity here comes from the album's two guitarists – Roberto Cecchetto and Domenico Caliri – who sometimes really get to stretch out and dominate the sound, but at other times hang back and just provide a sparkling backdrop for Rava's always-bold, well-formed lines on trumpet and flugelhorn – soaring out with that trademark sound that's always made him one of the most distinctive players of his generation. Other group members include Gianluigi Trovesi on alto and bass clarinet, Giovanni Maier on bass, and UT Ghandi on drums – and titles include "Da Silva", "Fefe", "La Strada", "Boplicity", "Lady Orlando", and "Satie For Two". Lucas SanttanaSem Nostalgia ... CD
Mais Um Discos (UK), 2009. New Copy Gatefold ... $11.99
Another bold leap forward for Lucas Santtana – a Brazilian artist who really blows our mind with each new release! It's been a few years since we last heard from Lucas, but it's clear he's been doing plenty during the time – coming up with fresh new ideas, working on some English-based lyrics, and continuing to deepen his role as one of the greatest contemporary musicians working in Brazil! Some of the set echoes the dubbier styles of Lucas' last album – but other bits are more acoustic, and show a whole different sonic aspect in his music – one that almost moves towards the Kassin/Domenico camp, but with a quality that's a bit more personal too – possibly because of the English lyrics on about half of the album's tracks. The guitar is often produced with a weird echoey edge – vaguely metallic, yet still surprisingly warm – and Santtana's vocals have really developed a great sense of feeling over the years. Titles include "Who Can Say Which Way", "Super Violao Mashup", "Amor Em Jacuma", "Ca Pra Nos", "I Can't Live Far From My Music", "Hold Me In", "Natureza #1 Em Mi Maior", "Ripple Of The Water", and "Cira Regina E Nana". Blow It Hard (UK), 2003. Used ... $9.99
Heavy funk from Speedometer – a UK power-combo who've really grown their sound over the years! This one's the group's first full-length effort, and it's a really kickin little record with even more to offer than their great 45s! The group's expanded their lineup to feature some great horn work, smoking Hammond, and even some occasional sock-soul vocals from The Speedettes – a female group with a really great sound – not hokey or cliched at all, but with the searing style of some of the best deep soul female groups of the funk years, like The Emotions or The Exciters in their later recordings. The sets shifts easily from vocals to instrumentals – staying funky all the time, but nicely changing up the mode of the tunes. Titles include "What Am I Gonna Do", "Monkey Stick", "Wait Up", "It's Our Turn", "You Know You Can", "Mullet", "Growbag", and "Episode In Palmetto". CD

VariousMocambo Funk 45s – A Selection Of Today's Rarest Vinyl Singles ... CD
Mocambo (Germany), 2007. New Copy ... $4.99
Contemporary funk, but with a groove deep enough to warrant the "rare" promised in the title – as most of these numbers would stand strongly next to the best funky 45s from the late 60s and early 70s! The production is great throughout – very hard-edged, and with a back-to-basics feel that really focuses on the best elements of the tunes – the snapping drums, funky basslines, blasting horn parts, and other great instrumental bits that make these tracks great. And while we'd always paid attention to the Mocambo label, this set clearly shows that they've got a lot more to offer than we'd ever realized – a completely solid body of work that's presented wonderfully in this super-tight CD! 18 tracks in all – including "Listen Up" by Glover Crockett & Glover, "Free Vibes (parts 1 & 2)" by Gizelle Smith & The Mocambo Allstars, "The Getaway" by Delta Rhythm Section, "Hustle The Mustle" by Speedometer, "Chicano Chaser" by Ian Langley, "Highway Patrol" by James Taylor Quartet, "Look Ka Py Py" by The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, "The Prophet" by Glover Crockett & Glover, and "Funkin Fever" by Delta Rhythm Section. Gilberto GilGilberto's Samba ... LP
Sony/Polysom (Brazil), 2014. New Copy ... Around June 15, 2014 (delayed)
One of the best records we've heard from Gilberto Gil in many, many years – a stripped-down session that focuses on his voice and guitar work – in a style that takes us back to Gil's earliest days in music! The album feels like some lost session that Gilberto might have recorded in the 60s – before his Louvacao debut – done with mostly just a bit of light percussion from the enigmatic Domenico, plus some help from Moreno Veloso – who also co-produced the record as well, with that great sense of space he always brings to his own music too. A few cuts feature extra touches – a bit of accordion, or some flute from Danilo Caymmi – but the main focus is on Gil, who hasn't sounded this great in years – still able to capture our imagination when he works in a straightforward style like this. Titles include "Milagre", "Um Abraco No Joao", "Tim Tim Por Tim Tim", "Eu Sambo Mesmo", "Aos Pes Da Cruz", and "Desde Que O Samba E Samba". LP, Vinyl record album

Orquestra ImperialFazendo As Pazes Com O Swing ... CD
Mais Um Discos (UK), 2011. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe the greatest record so far from this ultra-hip Brazilian group – a set that has the range of singers and musicians coming together wonderfully – in a really rich sound that's way more than the sum of its already-great parts! The album features vocals by Moreno Veloso, Nina Becker, Thalma De Freitas, and others – and features lots of hip instrumentation from Kassin, Domenico, Wilson Das Neves, and many others – a list of players large enough to be the orchestra promised in the title – but moving with a groove that's tight enough to match the work of Kassin or Moreno on other records! Many tunes echo older bossa, samba, and MPB elements, yet the style is pretty fresh as well – aware of the past, but not just rehashing it – thanks to a very inventive presentation overall. Titles include "Cair Na Folia", "Fala Chorando", "Moleculas", "Tamancas Do Caterete", "A Saudade E Que Me Consola", "Mocoto Em Tijuana", and "Apaixonado". CD

An excellent set that has the vocal talents of the Swingle Singers backed by the sweet and mellow instrumentation of the Modern Jazz Quartet! Given that John Lewis & Co were essentially local residents in Paris for so many years, it's amazing it took them until 1966 to hook up with Ward Swingle's hip vocal group – but the album's more than worth the wait, as the MJQ really help open things up, and take the Swingles into more complicated territory than before. Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A reimagined version of the legendary Yellow Pills compilation on Numero – 20 songs from the original compilation, plus two bonus tracks, new liner notes, and lots of cool sleeve scans, photos, and more! Forget everything you know about rock music in the late 70s – all the punk rock and new wave that's been immortalized over the years – and get ready to discover a whole new world of power pop! At the time, the power pop underground was as important to some ears as the artier and angrier work coming out of the east coast and UK – and the power pop world was one that could co-exist a bit more peacefully with mainstream rock, while still offering a great opportunity for bands on various local scenes. The work here has echoes of more famous acts of the time – like The Cars, The Kings, or The Knack – but it's also got a bit more of a home-grown, punk rock edge – one that comes through beautifully in the guitar parts, vocals, and unabashed hooks of the tunes. The set's a follow-up to the original Yellow Pills set by zine publisher Jordan Oakes – and it delves deeper than even that one, with a real focus on work from the end of the 70s, and acts that never had great chart success overall. Titles include "High School" by Tommy Rock, "She's Hi Fi" by The Trend, "There Goes My Heart Again" by The Kids, "Not My Girl Anymore" by The Bats, "All I Want" by The Colors, "Domestic/Imported" by The Toms, "Sunshine USA" by Randy Winburn, "One In A Million" by Luxury, "She's The Girl" by The Tweeds, "Rave It Up" by Colors, and "Hey Little Girl" by The Kids. The tracks are all great on their own – but Muro's work really shows us what the right sort of DJ can do with the material – lining up the best breaks and tightest riffs – to come up with a stunning tapestry of sound that's even better than the sum of its funky parts! Tracks include "Soul Investigators Theme" by Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, "Kool & The Gang" by Speedometer, "Truck Turner" by Undercover Express, "Purification (parts 1 & 2)" by Funkshone, "Pambiche" by New Cool Collective, "Midnight Feast Of Jazz" by Nick Pride & The Pimptones, "The Ghetto There's No Way Out" by The Soul Immigrants, "With Time" by Katzuma, "Got To Let My Feelings Show" by Bluey, "Stompin Joe" by Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro, and "Break The Fast" by Eddie Roberts West Coast Sounds. 24 tracks – and 70 minutes of music! Polydor, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
We wouldn't assume that the set is literally the complete Morricone, he's been so productive, it's hard to imagine that a true complete Morricone box set is possible, but it's absolutely the most encompassing set we've ever seen for him! Of course he's most famous for his international film score work, from cult horror to classic Hollywood – so 9 of the 15 discs are film themes and score material, selected by Morricone and sequenced chronology on discs 1-9, selections including the themes or other bits from Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo, Escalation, Galileo, Gli Intoccabili, Slalom, Svegliati E Uccidi, Metti Una Sera A Cena, Veruschka, La Donna Della Domenica, Copkiller, Malena, and so much more! An incredible document of the growth of the European jazz scene in the postwar years – a set recorded in Berlin, but featuring a host of the best players from all over the continent! The mix of musicians here is wonderful – similar to some of the great boder-crossing experiments from Saba/MPS a few years later – but still wonderfully fresh in this setting – as modern jazz giants from the other side of the Atlantic come together with amazing clarity of sound – and a host of fresh ideas that really set them apart from their contemporaries in the US! New KassinSonhando Devagar (with download) ... LP
20/20/20, 2013. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Really wonderful work from Alexandre Kassin – easily one of the most important contemporary figures in Brazilian music of the past decade or two! Kassin's best known on these shores for his work with Moreno Veloso and Domenico – but he's also had a hand in countless collaborations with others, both as a musician and a producer – helping shape the sound of Brazil in ways that rival American efforts of the post-rock generation. Yet Kassin's music is uniquely Brazilian, too – filled with warmth and imagination, and a careful balance of roots from older styles and cool contemporary execution – yet all without any of the genre-clashing styles of some of his compatriots on the scene – who sometimes try too hard to sound unique. Kassin's got a way of sounding universally appealing, yet never commercial – a really beautiful balance that's has his work at the top of our stacks for years – and which, with a record like this, may finally get him the global attention he deserves. The tunefulness at play is purely infectious – timeless sunshine pop hooks and overall catchiness, mixed with buzzing, avant touches on the edges that push it into weirder, but no less accessible realms. Percussion, guitar, vibes, Rhodes, horns and flute are often in the mix, with easygoing vocals by Kassin and backup singers. Includes "Mundo Natural", "Potassio", "For a De Area", "O Que Voce Quiser", "Calca De Ginastica", "Sorver-Te", and "Quando Voce Esta Sambando". LP, Vinyl record album

The smoking return of Martha High – a singer who worked famously with James Brown during his funk years, but who never got the same shot at full-length fame as Lyn Collins or Marva Whitney! Martha's every bit as great – and although she did cut later records in the disco years, it's only recently that folks have finally discovered the true depths of her talents – as she's returned to the fold with amazing vocals, and strong support from the global funk underground! After a previous set with Shaolin Temple Defenders, Martha breaks out even more strongly here with backing from Speedometer – a UK combo who've played together for years, and are already razor-sharp on their own – making for the perfect sort of groove to restore High to the sound of her years with James Brown. The album's brilliant all the way through – not a rehash of older modes, but a rich union of two very strong talents – coming together in an effort that's definitely greater than the sum of its parts. Titles include "I'd Rather Go Blind", "No More Heartaches", "No Man Worries", "Never Never Love A Married Man", "You Got It", "You Got Me Started", "Dragging Me Down", and "Trouble Man". CD

New Ennio MorriconeLa Donna Della Domenica ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully building score from Ennio Morricone – one that's filled with tracks that start out slow, then layer on elements in a really wonderful way! The main theme is a bit dreamy, but some others are a bit dark – and are done in an arry of jagged sounds and offbeat instrumental tunings that reminds us a bit of Morricone's brilliance on the score for The Burglars (Gli Scassinatori). As with that one, piano figures strongly on some of the tunes here – recorded with spare, echoey qualities – but in ways that are hardly the sweeter tones of Morricone's more famous scores of later years. CD features a total of 19 tracks in all – a nicely expanded version of the soundtrack! CD
