Cheryl LynnIn Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1979. New Copy .... $14.99 18.99
Cheryl Lynn follows things up nicely from her famous debut – mostly sticking in the same upbeat territory as her earliest club hits – a groove that's perfect for her bold, soaring vocals! The album sports a few mellower cuts, but it's the groovers that really keep things together – great late disco numbers, served up with plenty of class, and just the right sort of lean energy to help Lynn step strongly into the 80s groove generation! Titles include the sweet mellow groover "Don't Let It Fade Away" – plus "Hide It Away", "Feel It", "In Love", "Love Bomb", "I've Got Just What You Need", "Chances", and "I've Got Faith In You". CD features bonus tracks – "In Love (7" version)", "Feel It (7" version)", and "Keep It Hot (special version)".

Cheryl LynnIn The Night (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Big Break (UK), 1981. New Copy .... $14.99
One of Cheryl Lynn's early killers for Columbia – an album of tight, bouncy, joyous soul all the way through – free from any of the too-commercial touches that sometimes slowed Cheryl's later work! Ray Parker Jr produced the set – and he as well is free from the slicker sounds of his hits – keeping things warm, personal, and real on most of the album's best tracks – and balancing Cheryl nicely between heartfelt mellow tracks and a few more uptempo tunes designed to keep her on the minds of the dancefloor scene. Titles include "In The Night", "Baby", "What's On Your Mind", "Hurry Home", and "With Love On Our Side". CD features 2 bonus tracks – "Shake It Up Tonight (single)" and "In The Night (single)".

Cheryl LynnInstant Love (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia, 1982. New Copy .... $14.99
Cheryl Lynn and Luther Vandross – a tremendous combination that makes for one heck of a great record! Luther arranged and produced the entire set – and he does a great job here of pushing Cheryl Lynn into more upbeat territory without getting too poppy or schmaltzy! In a way, the record shows traces of some of Luther's best work for other artists (and himself) in the late 70s – an approach to club that's still plenty darn soulful, and which really lets Lynn open up with tremendous vocals. Titles include a famous remake of "If This World Were Mine" – done as a duet with Luther – plus "I Just Wanna Be Your Fantasy", "Instant Love", "Sleep Walkin", "Day After Day", "Look Before You Leap", and "Say You'll Be Mine". 2 bonus tracks: "Instant Love (Single Version)" and "If This World Were Mine (Single Version)".

new Cheryl LynnPreppie (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/FTG, 1983. New Copy .... $14.99 19.99 Out Of Stock
Hard to believe that a preppie look could ever be associated with a soul singer, but by the time of this 1983, the preppie craze had spread so much that it actually provided Cheryl Lynn a nice way to update her style! There's nothing preppie about the music, though – and the record's a great batch of cuts that show how much Cheryl influenced the soul sound of the early 80s, especially at a time when Columbia was putting out so many strong R&B acts – stepping forth with a tight, mature groove that's totally wonderful – definitely a standard-setting sound that so many other female singers tried to match! Includes the cuts "Encore", "Fool A Fool", "Fix It", "Change The Channel", "Preppie", and "Life's Too Short". New CD version has four bonus tracks – including "Encore (dance version)", "Free (special 12" version)", "Preppie (12" version)", and "Preppie (12" club)".

Various — Groove On Down 2 – Another 12 Soulful Boogie Gems ... CD
Soul Brother (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy .... $16.99
Seminal club tracks from the start of the 80s – a dozen great boogie numbers pulled together for the second installment in this excellent series! The package is really the cream of the crop from the era, and the set mixes together a few minor hits with other lesser-known numbers for a really fresh array of music – the kind of collection that goes way past the obvious, and which is bound to re-illuminate your understanding of dancefloor grooves from the time. Titles include "Share The Night" by World Premier, "Our Hearts Will Aways Shine" by Ozone, "Bizzaare" by Rhyze, "You Need A Change Of Mind" by Brooklyn Express, "Can't Get Away" by Carol Williams, "Seventh Heaven (Larry Levan rmx)" by Gwen Guthrie, "Still In Love" by Rose Royce, "Help Is On The Way" by The Whatnauts, "Got To Be Real" by Cheryl Lynn, "This Time Baby" by Jackie Moore, and "Stay Tonite" by Mandrill.

new Sylvia St James — Echoes & Images ... LP
Elektra, 1981. Used .... $0.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
Not a bad bit of modern soul, in a style that's kind of in the same camp as Denise Williams or Cheryl Lynn. Sylvia's got a voice that clearly has a lot of range, but she doesn't always use it to best effect – especially on a few numbers that have her trying a bit too hard to be emotive. Still, there's some decent smooth soul numbers on here – in the mode of the other Elektra modern soul albums from the early 80s. Titles include "Prime Time", "Behind My Back", "If You Let Me Love You", "The Bottom Line", and "Eastern Man".

new Joe Bataan — Mestizo ... CD
Salsoul/Unidisc (Canada), 1980. New Copy .... $10.99 Out Of Stock
One of the best later albums from Joe Bataan – a really wonderful little set that takes off strongly from the salsoul experiments he first began on the Afrofilipino album! The album's got a great blend of clubby rhythms and Latin soul touches – all arranged by Marty Sheller, and carried off by Joe with soulful vocals that still retain a fair bit of the heartbreaking qualities of the older days. There's a punch and funky undercurrent here that was often missing from other Salsoul albums – and titles include the great "Rap O Clap O", which is kind of a remake of Cheryl Lynn's "To Be Real" – plus "Sadie (She Smokes)", "Mestizo", "Rock Me All Night Long", and "Latin Lover". CD features a lot of bonus tracks too – including different mixes of "Rap O Clap O" and "Sadie" – making for a total of 12 tunes in all!
