Bionic Boogie — Hot Butterfly ... LP
Polydor, 1978. Very Good+ .... $3.99
A dancefloor classic! The album's the second by Gregg Diamond's Bionic Boogie, and head and shoulders above the rest – a sublime blend of soul and club that's hardly been matched again! Diamond manages to make things groove, but never loses sight of the soulful styles that make the record so great – and works here with key contributions from a young Luther Vandross, who gives the album some of the same strong vocal arrangements he brought to his own first two albums on Atlantic! Luther sings lead on the album's legendary track "Hot Butterfly", and works in a group with Cissy Houston on other tracks – sweetly soaring with vocals that go far beyond most disco efforts of the time. Simply sublime, and with classics that include "Hot Butterfly", "Paradise", "Cream (Always Rises To The Top)", "Chains", and "When The Sh*t Hits The Fan (Rocket Pocket)".

Rongetz Foundation — Brooklyn Butterfly Session ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2012. New Copy .... $18.99
A stone smoker from Rongetz Foundation – and a record that's even better than anything else we've heard from them! This time around, the sound is very live – recorded in the US, with help from heavyweights like Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax and Bruce Williams on alto – plus killer vocals from Gregory Porter on two tracks that are worth the price of the album alone! The sound is totally smoking – soul jazz, with a spiritual undercurrent – and on the cuts "Hard Bop Merry Go Round" and "Gogo Soul", Porter gets some of his best backing ever – a mode that almost sounds better than his already-great albums! A few other cuts feature vocals by other singers – and titles inclu de "Eunice K", "Sam's Intro", "A Composer Of Modern Day", "The Braggart", and "Freaking Sunshine".

new Sweet Inspirations — Hot Butterfly ... LP
RSO, 1979. Very Good+ .... $2.99 Just Sold Out!
The Sweet Inspirations move in the same musical direction as their once-labelmates in Memphis, the Emotions – and turn their soulful harmonies towards a sound that's clearly aimed a bit more at the northern dancefloors. However, despite the fact that the album might be thought of as a throwaway disco set (emphasized by the fact that the girls toured with the Bee Gees that year), it's actually a pretty nice little record – one that makes things more interesting than we could have expected for the group! The vocals are actually extremely strong, and very well suited to just about all the settings on the album – and it was a particularly great move for the group to title the album after Greg Diamond's "Hot Butterfly", as that tune is done wonderfully here – with a snapping groove and sweet female soul that puts it somewhere between versions by Diamond and Chaka Khan. Other tracks include "Love Is On The Way", "Face To Face", "Hot Fun", "Do It Right", and "Holding Back".

new Tavares — Madam Butterfly (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1978. New Copy .... $13.99 Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Tavares – every bit as great on the uptempo end, as you'd expect from their bigger hits, as it is on the sweeter ballad tracks – which step out here as a tremendous surprise! The set was crafted with help from Philly maestro Bobby Martin – and begins with a groove that certainly shows Martin in all of his Sigma-inspired glory – but as the set moves on, it glides into some sweeter, gentler tracks that come across with a mighty mellow soul approach! The set features 3 stellar tracks written by the great Sam Dees – "Games, Games", "Let Me Heal The Bruises", and "My Love Calls" – all of which show a strong deeper soul side of the group. Other tracks are great, too – and include "I'm Back For More", Never Had A Love Like This Before", "Straight From Your Heart", "One Telephone Call Away", and "Positive Forces". 3 bonus tracks: "Never Had A Love Like This Before (US Capitol 12" Single" – and the great instrumental version for that – plus ""Straight From Your Heart (US Capitol 7" Single)".

new Flora Purim — Butterfly Dreams (Keepnews collection) ... CD
Milestone, 1973. New Copy .... $3.99 11.98 Out Of Stock
Pure vocal magic – featuring the lovely Flora Purim at the height of her California powers – working in a sublime mix of jazz, fusion, and Brazilian rhythms – a sound that she virtually invented! The group on the set is one of her greatest of the time – with players that include Joe Henderson, George Duke, and Stanley Clarke – coming together with some great Brazilian percussion from husband Airto. The tracks are tight and jazzy – and include "Light As A Feather", "Dr. Jive (parts 1 & 2)", "Butterfly Dreams", "Moon Dreams", and "Dindi". This is the stuff that virtually defined the Brazilian/American groove of the 70s – and it's still light years ahead of any of Flora's many imitators!

Butterfly, Late 70s. Near Mint- Gatefold .... $7.99
The legendary Rinder & Lewis team headed up this Frenchy effort by the pop disco group Saint Tropez. The centerpiece is the album's cover of Serge Gainsbourg's classic "Je T'Aime", redone here with a distinct 70s feel, and a groove that's just right for the dancefloor. Other tunes include "Coeur A Coeur", "On Rien A Perdre", and "La Symphonie Africaine".

new Atomic Forest — Obsession (2LPs with bonus book) ... LP
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue).... $23.99
The collected work of a mighty trippy group from the Indian scene – a psychedelic combo who worked in the 70s, but who had the same sort of edge you'd hear from the American and British scenes of the late 60s! In truth, there's a fair bit of Anglo influence going on in the music – not just in the English language lyrics, but also in the way the guitars come together with stretched-out, soaring brilliance – flying eight miles high to the sky in a heady brew of freak and fuzz – and turning this approach to some surprising soundtrack numbers too! Production is perfect for the band's vibe – often spacing things out in a really cool way – with some slightly primitive modes that also remind us of the South American psych scene of a few years before. Now Again did a brilliant job with the package – bringing together a host of the group's best tracks from the mid 70s, and a bonus 20 page booklet with full notes on the group, and some very cool photos and ephemera. The whole thing even features a few unreleased numbers – and titles include "Obsession 77", "Sunshine Day", "Butterfly Version 1", "Theme From The Godfather", "Theme From The Fox", "Windmills Of Your Mind", "Booboo Lullaby", "Man You're Not Number One", "Travel On", "Gesthemene", and "Foxy Lady".

new Roy Ayers — He's Coming ... CD
Polydor/Universal, 1971. New Copy .... $10.99 11.98
One of the rarest and greatest Roy Ayers albums of all time – the sly, funky and spiritual masterpiece He's Coming from 1971 – really the beginning of the funk years from Roy Ayers Ubiquity! This one's a totally solid mix of soulful jazz, jazzy soul and righteous funk – and it's straight up wonderful all the way through – with a groove that's hugely influential to say the least! Includes the amazing track "We Live In Brooklyn Baby", which has a slow sample bassline in the intro that's just incredible – plus groovy cuts like the spiritual funk classic "He's a Superstar", "He's Coming", and "Sweet Tears". The lineup includes Sonny Fortune on soprano sax and flute and Billy Cobham drums and percussion, and the record's co-arranged by Harry Whitaker, who's also on keys and vocals – with other tracks include "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother", "Ain't Got Time", "I Don't Know How To Love Him", "Sweet Butterfly Of Love" and "Fire Weaver". Amazing stuff, really a beautiful encapsulation of Roy Ayers in peak form!

Bilal — Love Surreal ... CD
Purpose/E One, 2013. New Copy .... $15.99 17.98
Tremendous work from Bilal – and further proof that his life on the indie side of the soul spectrum has been a very good thing! There's a crispness to the record that crackles right from the start – slight cosmic touches in the beats, but never too over the top – just enough to electrify the vocals and push Bilal past any sort of mainstream soul – and help him deliver the rich promise we first heard in his music so many years ago – but never found this fully formed during his major label stretch! There's some nice electric bits that percolate forth – moogy keys or sparkling samples – yet the vocals still have all the core warmth that's kept us coming back. Titles include "Astray", "Lost For Now", "West Side Girl", "Back To Love", "Longing & Waiting", and "Butterfly", which features a guest appearance from Robert Glasper!

new Tim Buckley — Goodbye & Hello ... LP
Elektra, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold .... $29.99
Easily one of our favorite albums by Tim Buckley – and a record that really opens up with some key jazzy touches! Buckley's still got his roots in folk here, and his vocals are yet to hit the extremes of Starsailor or Lorca – but there's also a new sense of inflection to the way he puts over the lyrics, shaded in by use of vibes, kalimba, harmonium, and harpsichord – the latter two of which are played on the session by Don Randi! Tracks are relatively short, but high in concept – and include the protest song "No Man Can Find The War", plus "Hallucinations", "Phantasmagoria In Two", "Carnival Song", "Pleasant Street", "Morning Glory", and "Goodbye & Hello".
(Butterfly label pressing. Cover has mark from sticker removal, an unglued bottom seam, some wear, and a spot of residue on the front.)

Norman Connors — This Is Your Life ... CD
Arista (Japan), 1977. New Copy .... $19.99
A fantastic bit of modern soul from Norman Connors – proof that he was still growing and changing as an artist, continuing to push his groove into whole new areas as the 70s progressed. The record takes the smooth jazzy sound of the earlier Buddah sides, sharpens it into a more sophisticated modern soul style, fused with a bit of a quiet storm vocal approach, to create a wonderfully mature album of silky soul tracks. Part of the strength comes from the vocalists – who include Eleanor Mills and Jean Carn – and Norman also does a bit of singing on the record, and comes across surprisingly well. Tracks include "Stella", "This Is Your Life", "Wouldn't You Like To See", "Butterfly", "Captain Connors", and a wonderful jazzy soul reworking of "The Creator Has A Master Plan".

Diana Darby — IV (Intravenous) ... CD
Delmore, 2012. New Copy .... $12.99
Beautiful stuff from singer Diana Darby – one of our favorite voices in the indie folk landscape! There's a hushed tone to Diana's voice that softens some fairly heavy lyricism – on personal songs that manage to speak the plain, sometimes harsh truths of love and spirituality with a fragile, hypnotic beauty. She accompanies herself on guitar, and the other instrumentation is as subtle and strong as her singing and songcraft – with light percussion, cello, bass, pedal steel, banjo and sax. Diana has been with Delmore Recordings for over a decade now – the label that's doing the world such a service by unearthing archival Karen Dalton – and it's great to hear new music on Delmore that'll truly stand the test of time just as strongly! Includes "Looking For Trouble", "Snow Cover Me", "If Love", "Spinning", "Buttercup", "Oh Butterfly", "Ugly Little Toad", "Heaven", "The Alphabet", "Elena", "Little One" and "Talking To God".

new Digable Planets — Blowout Comb ... CD
Pendulum, 1994. Used .... $5.99
The Digables certainly weren't the first or most innovative hip hop group to rely upon cooled out jazz for the backbone of their sound. In fact without Tribe Called Quest's second album, Digable Planets probably wouldn't even have existed, at least not in anything close to the same form. What they did do though was pave the trail blazed by Tribe and De La with pure gold – and Blowout Comb is a fine ride! Loads of tripped out arrangements on live instruments (a huge step after the largely sampled debut), layer upon layer of groovy vocals in addition to the easy rhymes of Butterfly, Ladybug and Doodlebug, and even an appearance by Jeru. One of the catchiest jazz-rap fusion record of the 90s, not that there's anything wrong with that! Tracks include "The May 4th Movement Starring Doodlebug", "Black Ego", "Dog It", "Jettin", "Borough Check", "Highing Fly", "Dial 7", "The Art Of Easing", "KB's Alley", "Graffiti", "Blowing Down", "9th Wonder", and "For Corners".

Rolf Ericson — Miles Away 1950 to 1952 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Early 50s. New Copy .... $15.99 16.99
Seminal work from trumpeter Rolf Ericson – a player who also cut some key 50s material in the US, but who's working here in his Swedish homeland! The tracks are a variety of great early 78, EP, and 10" album cuts – most for the small Artist label, all pretty rare, and including some even rarer unreleased material too! Ericson's trumpet is in the lead on most numbers – often with slightly large ensembles, but which are already working in a 50s cool modern mode that's nice and lean – a lesson learned no doubt from Ericson's time in the Woody Herman group in the late 40s. There's a huge amount of material on the CD – 22 tracks in all – and titles include "So What", "Perdido", "Conservation", "Miles Away", "The Daring Young Swedes On The Flying Trapeze", "A Swedish Butterfly", "The World Is Waiting For The Sunrise", and "The Cool Pool".

Herbie Hancock — Thrust ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Very Good .... $7.99
Killer electric work from Herbie Hancock – right on par with his groundbreaking Headhunters set, but a bit spacier too! The album features a Headhunters-solid lineup – with Bennie Maupin on saxes, Paul Jackson on bass, Mike Clark on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion – all grooving wonderfully with Herbie on a set of super-long tracks! Hancock himself handles a host of incredible keyboards – Fender Rhodes, clavinet, Arp, and lots more – all in a lean electric style that still sounds as fresh today as it did way back in the mid 70s – perhaps even more so, given the return to this sort of basic groove that has happened in recent years! Tracks are long, tight, and super funky – and titles include "Actual Proof", "Palm Grease", "Spank-A-Lee", and "Butterfly".
(Quadraphonic pressing. Cover has some wear, a mark from sticker removal, and some fading on the top seam and spine.)

new Coleman Hawkins — Hawk & The Hunter ... LP
Mira, Mid 60s. Very Good+ .... $9.99
A really unusual chapter of the Coleman Hawkins catalog – an album of easy-going ballads and late nite tracks, recorded with backings from arranger Frank Hunter – hence the title of the set! Hunter's using some lush strings on the set, but not in a way that gets in front of Hawkins' horn – and Coleman gets plenty of room to blow on the session, recorded here in a nice echoey mode that brings out the deepness of his tone even more than usual! Rhythm is by 2 different trios – one with Dick Hyman, Milt Hinton, and Osie Johnson; the other with Hank Jones, George Duvivier, and Jimmie Crawford – and tunes include "Easy Walker", "Traumerei", "Lazy Butterfly", "Pebbles", "Not Quite Right", "Whisper To Me", "Lonely Tenor", and "Hawk Talk".
(Cover has light wear, some splitting on the top seam, and some pen on the back.)

Eddie Henderson — Eddie Henderson – Anthology ... CD
Soul Brother/Passion (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy .... $16.99
The first compilation to really do justice to jazz funk legend Eddie Henderson – and a great one, too! Henderson's spacey trumpet style graced some of the best Blue Note and Capitol jazz sides to come out during the 70s – and his open-ended snakey way of playing was very different than many of his 70s contemporaries on the instrument. Plus, Eddie never minded a little bit of smooth production, and was certainly one of the more soulful players of his generation – forging a unique style that was in the same camp as Donald Byrd's sweet fusion work for Blue Note in the mid 70s, but with a spacey style that's really great. Nearly every cut on the CD features production work by Skip Drinkwater – who was to Eddie what Larry Mizell was to Donald Byrd – and most of this work has been long unavailable for years! Titles include "Kudu", "Explodition", "Involuntary Bliss", "Inside You", "Galaxy", "Butterfly", "Say You Will", "Amoroso", "Open Eyes", "Prance On", and "Hopscotch". Excellent work throughout – performed in the company of some of the 70s best funky fusion players!

Eddie Henderson — Mahal ... LP
Capitol, 1978. Very Good .... $7.99
An excellent document of how the rawer soul jazz spiritualism of the early 70s smoothed out to become the spacey mellow fusion of the late 70s. The players all have their jazz funk chops – and include Paul Humphrey, Herbie Hancock, Bennie Maupin, and Bill Summers – and they've taken years at their craft to perfect their interplay in a subtle fashion, without the heavier full-on message of earlier days. Skip Drinkwater's producing the set – and as on some of his best work from the time, he manages to give the whole thing a smooth sound, yet still retain a lot of the soul. Lots of nice grooves, with almost a Larry Mizell feeling to them. Titles include "Mahal", "Ecstasy", "Butterfly", and "Cyclops".
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Bottom seam has a small rip & some wear. Bottom corners have heavy creasing & waviness.)

Jazztronik — Studio Live Best ... CD
Shichigosan (Japan), 2012. New Copy .... $36.99
If you think you know Jazztronik, think again – because this beautiful set has the group working live in the studio – all spontaneous, without any overdubs or added programming – in a mode that's even more soulful than before, and which really represents a great progression for the Jazztronik style! As you'd guess from the name, there's always been plenty of jazz in their music – but this time around, the liveness really makes things crackle – and brings in an even deeper vibe and sense of humanity to their whole groove – whether the cuts are vocal numbers with a soulful finish, or some of the more cosmic instrumentals. Not really club jazz, but something even greater – and a tremendous achievement for Ryo Nozaki – one that's got us loving his music all over again! Titles include "Love Tribge", "Tiger Eyes", "Mista Swing", "Black Dragon", "Voyage", "Butterfly Dance", "Saumrai", and "Beauty Flow" – all done in new versions here.

new Juju (Oneness Of Juju) — Chapter Two – Nia (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Strata East/Shout (Japan), 1974. New Copy .... $24.99
The rare second album from Juju – the avant jazz collective who'd later morph into funk band Oneness Of Juju, but who still sound pretty revolutionary here! There's a bit more focus than before – still energy that's a lot like the best righteous jazz groups coming out of Chicago or St Louis at the same time, but maybe a bit more direct, too – and really showing some of the stronger spiritual tones that would only blossom more strongly in later years! Reedman Plunky Nakabinde is firmly at the helm of the group – on tenor, flute, and soprano sax – but the set also features great work from Lon Moshe on vibes and percussion, Babatunde on congas and drums, Phil Branch on bass, and Al-Hammond Raul on piano and percussion. The sounds are a bit less Afro-styled than on the Oneness records, but still have all the great spiritual currents – and titles include an excellent version of Pharoah Sanders' "Black Unity", plus the original tunes "Contradiction","Nia", "Black Experience", and "The End Of The Butterfly King". Features two bonus tracks – "Live Revolution" and "Live Revolution Continues".

Kankick — Beautiful – Opus Of Love Deeper Than Flesh ... CD
Octave (Japan), 2009. New Copy .... $16.99 25.99
Dreamy hip hop funk from underground production mainstay Kankick – and one that finds him going deeper into a jazz funk inspired realm than ever before – yet still delivering the hazy hip hop beatcraft he made his name on a decade or so earlier! Beats are prominent in the Kankick vibe, often with bit of static attached – a prominent feature of his work that often gives it a fresh from the crates vibe. This particular set pairs that tried-and-true approach with bits of jazzy keys, piano, synth and other sample-centric elements. Title include "The Bomb Butterfly", "Black Women Candle Wax", "This Is A World Export", "Ngiht Time Beauty", "C'mon Love, Let's Dance", "Take My Hand", "Warped Daze", "The Tribes Chant", "Can't Escape Space (Love Quakes)", "Warped Dayz", "Continued Togetherness" and more.

Massive Attack — 100th Window ... CD
Virgin, 2003. Used .... $2.99
The latest from the groundbreaking Bristol crew! The sound on this outing isn't as dark as the last two albums, but there's still the unmistakable Massive vibe, with a full, deep bass, dubby elements, hip-hop & jungle inflected beats and atmospheric touches that spawned scores of copycats. Horace Andy is welcome, as on previous efforts, with his bright voice gracing a number of tracks, while on other songs Sinead O'Connor's vocals actually fit in quite well amongst the thick sonic collage. 9 tracks in all: "Future Proof", "What Your Soul Sings", "Everywhen", "Special Cases", "Butterfly Caught", "A Prayer For England", "Small Time Shot Away", "Name Taken" and "Antistar".

Johnny Mathis — So Nice/Johnny Mathis Sings ... CD
Mercury/Real Gone, 1966/1967. New Copy .... $16.99 18.98
A pair of gems from Johnny Mathis' years at Mercury Records – back to back on a single CD! First up is So Nice, an album that definitely lives up to its title – with a sound that extends strongly from the lushness of Mathis' early 60s recordings, but which also has a bit of a nod to the late 60s scene too – thanks to tunes from Marcos Valle, Michel Legrand, Burt Bacharach, and others! Glenn Osser handles most of the arrangements – in that shimmering strings style that always seemed to work best for Johnny during this period – a mode that never overshadows his vocals, and really lets that Mathis magic unfurl – on titles that include "The Music That Makes Me Dance", "I Will Wait For You", "So Nice", "Elusive Butterfly", "What Now My Love", and "What The World Needs Now Is Love". Johnny Mathis Sings is the final Johnny Mathis album for Mercury Records – and one of our favorites from the time! There's a nice little bounce to some of these cuts that really opens Johnny up – a style that's never too groovy, but which brings in some slight 60s syncopation to the rhythms – albeit in a gentle sort of way. Strings and horns shimmer over the top, next to Johnny's great vocals – which are still the center stage of the session – almost a bit more mature, and sounding wonderful on cuts that include "Strangers In The Night", "Who Can Say", "I Wish You Love", "The Second Time Around", "Sunny", "Saturday Sunshine", and "Eleanor Rigby".

Lee Ritenour — Masterpieces – Best Of The GRP Years – Jazz Club ... CD
GRP/Universal (Germany), 1980s/1990s. New Copy .... $5.99
Sweet grooves from Lee Ritenour – a collection of the guitarist's classic recordings for the GRP label! Lee was one of the key talents who helped forge the GRP sound right from the start – that great blend of soulful and smooth that went onto have an impact on jazz for generations to come – but which is often heard best in the hands of a founder like this! Ritenour's got a great sense of space and timing, which usually keeps things far from the smooth jazz cliches that often hold back other players. There's great keyboards on many numbers – played by Bob James, Dave Grusin, and others – and titles include "Rio Funk", "13", "Butterfly", "St Bart's", "Water To Drink", "Boss City", "78th & 3rd", "Mizrab", and "Children's Games".

Brother John Rydgren — Silhouette Segments/Cantana For New Life/Worlds Of Youth (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Omni (Australia), 1966/1967/1968. New Copy 2 CDs .... $18.99 25.99
Wild, psychedelic era material from the very hip Lutheran pastor Brother John Rydgren! He sports a smoky voice and a poetic, playful, almost comedic spoken word style – in a way that's very much reminiscent of Ken Nordine – as if Ken was a groovy Christian poet! The sound is fuzzy, tripped out psychedelic pop – and his mission seems to be to satirize the sounds and styles of the time as much as it is to spread the Good Word – but at the same time, he's fully embracing the psychedelic sounds! It's almost entirely spoken word on the vocal front – with some oddball choir backdrops and other, often female voices floating in and out from time to time – and pretty diverse instrumentation that often feels like he's vocalizing over some psych funk sound library grooves! Also like our man Nordine, Brother John was a radio personality – but he released some incredibly rare LPs – with '68's Silhouette Segments, '67's Cantata Of New Life and '66's World Of Youth anthologized here by Omni – along with some additional material and a nice little booklet. Incredibly cool stuff! Includes "Music To Watch Girls By", "The Happening", "An Offering Of Music", "Butterfly", "Great To Build Something", "The Air Terminal", the nearly half hour "Cantata Of New Life", "News (The Kite And The News)", "Forgiveness (The Boy Looking Natural)", "Baptism (Come To War)", "Martyrs" and more.

Ship — Contemporary Folk Music Journey ... LP
Elektra, 1972. Very Good Gatefold .... $4.99
A surprising late folk entry in the Elektra Records catalog – recorded in the early 70s, and with some sublime production from the great Gary Usher! The sound is definitely contemporary folk, as promised in the title – but there's more of a singer/songwriter sensibility too – more mature songs than straighter folk, made even more so by Usher's production – and harmonies on some of the vocals that almost recall the post-folk world over at Atlantic. Steve Melshenker and Steve Cowan wrote the album, and do most of the vocals – and both play acoustic guitar too – alongside piano, flute, dobro, bass, and cello, which makes for a warm acoustic sound. Titles include "The Ship", "The Order", "The Man", "The Calm", "The Storm", "The Return", and "The Reason".

Deniece Williams — Let's Hear It For The Boy ... CD
Columbia, 1984. Used .... $9.99
An album that crossed over for Deniece in a big way – and it's a great one, with crisp, lean pop soul production that's as gratifying as any of the era – with a few ballads that are totally top notch, too! This is definitely the best of her more pop oriented records, with hooks galore – they sink in deeply! Includes the unstoppably catchy title track (but try to not think about Chris Penn dancing to it) plus "I Want You", "Picking Up The Pieces", "Next Love", "Black Butterfly", "Haunting Me", "Wrapped Up" and more.

Various — Badmeaningood Vol 3 – Compiled By Peanut Butter Wolf ... CD
Ultimate Dilemma, 1970s/1980s/2003. Used .... $3.99
We can't think of a better title for this excellent compilation from Peanut Butter Wolf. The Badmeaningood series is a personal hip hop chronicle from the compiler, and as you'd expect from PBW, the definition here is taking somewhat less than literally, though there's no shortage of back in the day old school classics, mixed side by side with some unlikely candidates, but in a way that makes more than perfect sense. Mixed continuously front to back like your favorite mix tape this set takes you from Grandmaster Flash's "New Adventures Of Grandmaster Flash" to Keni Burke's "Risin' To The top (Snowboy's acoustic mix)" and stopping at all points in between, whether it's Iron Butterfly's "Soul Experience", Johnny Hammond's "Fantasy", The Cold Crush Brothers "Punk Rock Rap", Prince Far I's "Black Man Land", the Jungle Brother's "I'm Gonna Do You", the 45 King's "Funk Box (We Want To Hear The Beat box)", Roy Ayer's "Can't You See Me", The Human League's "Hard Times" and Alicia Myers "Don't Stop What You're Doin" and many more!

Rev-Ola (UK), Late 60s. New Copy .... $13.99
No jumble here, as the collection's a really well-done batch of tracks – all rarer-than-rare psychedelic gems from the UK scene of the late 60s, a good deal of which have never been issued before! There's a real nuggets-like sound to the set – plenty of fuzz guitar, flanged-out vocals, and trippy productions – but there's also some sweeter elements too, a few echoes of Sunshine Pop that help keep the set from just being a rehash of familiar psych modes – and which makes it a tremendous new discovery in sound! The notes are as full, detailed, and thoughtful as the track selection – and titles include "Friends & Mirrors" by Five's Company, "You Can Run" by The Majority, "Do What You Must" by Tintern Abbey, "What's The Rush Dillbury" by Paradox, "Delighted To Meet You (demo)" by Honeybus, "Meet Me At The Fair" by The Penny Peeps, "Mary Ann With The Shaky Hand (demo)" by Opal Butterfly, "Time Machine Man" by The Majority, "Like The Day Goes" by Paradox, "Flying High" by Rupert's People, "You & Me Baby" by Obscured Rays, and "Into My Life She Came" by The Penny Peeps.

Digable Planets — Blowout Comb (plus poster) ... LP
1994. New Copy 2LP (reissue).... Late May, 2013
The laid back classic, finally back on vinyl! The Digables certainly weren't the first or the most innovative hip hop group to rely upon cooled out jazz for the backbone of their sound. In fact without Tribe Called Quest's second album, Digable Planets probably wouldn't even have existed, at least not in anything close to the same form. What they did do though was pave the trail blazed by Tribe and De La with pure gold – and Blowout Comb is their shiniest ride! Loads of tripped out arrangements on live instruments (a huge step after the largely sampled debut), layer upon layer of groovy vocals in addition to the easy rhymes of Butterfly, Ladybug and Doodlebug, and even an appearance by Jeru. Probably the catchiest jazz-rap fusion record of the 90s, not that there's anything wrong with that! Tracks include "The May 4th Movement Starring Doodlebug", "Black Ego", "Dog It", "Jettin", "Borough Check", "Highing Fly", "Dial 7", "The Art Of Easing", "K.B.'s Alley", "Graffiti", "Blowing Down", "9th Wonder", and "For Corners".

new Robert Glasper — Double Booked ... CD
Blue Note, 2009. Used .... $9.99 Just Sold Out!
Great work from Robert Glasper – one of our favorite new artists on Blue Note in years – a hell of a great piano player, with a fluid groove that just gets better and better with each new record! Glasper has a way of warming us up right away – sliding into a compelling piano line that holds us rapt, and really takes us on a journey – a bit like the best work of Bheki Mseleku back in the 90s, but with an undercurrent of funkier New York modes too! Half the record features Robert in trio format – playing both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – and the rest of the set moves into "experiment" tracks that bring in Casey Benjamin on saxes, plus some electric bass, and very funky drums from Chris Dave, who also plays on the trio numbers. Mos Def makes a vocal appearance on one track, and Bilal appears on two more – but our favorite grooves are always from Glasper's keyboards, especially his acoustic piano. Titles include "Downtime", "59 South", "Butterfly", "4Eva", "No Worries", "Yes I'm Country", and "Open Mind".

Early genius from drummer Norman Connors – a sensational bit of righteous soul jazz – right up there with the best work on Strata East and Black Jazz from the time! The sound here is full, soulful, and spiritual – as Connors heads up a large ensemble that includes luminaries like Herbie Hancock, Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, Carlos Garnett, Buster Williams, and Dee Dee Bridgewater – all working together in a formation that's free spirited, yet tightly unified – often at a level that's even stronger than their own recordings! The album mixes a few longer tracks with shorter numbers – in a mode that reminds us a lot of Garnett's classic Black Love album – and titles include "Song For Rosa", "Black Lightnin", "Dark Of Light", "Butterfly Dreams", and "Laughter".

A great early and slightly obscure album from Argentine pianist Enrique Villegas – recorded in New York in the mid 50s, with bass by Milt Hinton and drums from Cozy Cole! Villegas' approach to the keys is very rhythmic and a little bit pyrotechnic at times – almost inspired a bit by the Garner generation of Americans, but also showing its own sense of timing, space, and drama. The approach is almost equal parts jazz and more mainstream piano work – always creative, and well-matched with the sensitive talents of Hinton and powerful touch of Cole. new Fox — For Fox's Sake ... CD
RPM (UK), 1970. New Copy .... $13.99 Out Of Stock
One of those records you hear and say "man, why wasn't this a classic?" – a tremendously well-conceived bit of British psychedelia from the end of the 60s, served up in a clear and focused style that holds up beautifully well over the years! There's a lean, no-nonsense quality here that really makes the record sparkle – a sense of a tune that makes each different number on the record come up with new delight – showing that The Fox were hardly just some happy accident in the studio, but a really great band that could've, should've gone onto much greater fame. But rather than ponder the might-haves in the group's career, let us just say that we're plenty darn happy to have this great LP – a real standout, even from a tremendous time in modern music – packaged here with great sound, notes on the group, and even a few bonus demo tracks! new Diana Krall — Glad Rag Doll ... LP
Verve, 2012. New Copy 2LP .... $22.99 24.98 Out Of Stock
A bit of a leftfield project for Diana Krall – one that has kind of a 20s Vaudeville-styled theme – done with a stripped down, sting-buzzing sound, produced by T Bone Burnett! We dig this one a lot – and while it's sung, played and performed in a way that's reminiscent of the era, it's got a fresh and contemporary feel. The always great guitarist Marc Ribot's angular take on the spirit of the songs is an integral part of the sound, as is T Bone's skewed view of Americana – but it's Diana's show, and she's wonderful! It takes a special voice to come across as subtle and understated as she does here, though still carrying the tunes in an elegant way. More stylistic detours like this, please! Includes "We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye", "There Ain't No Sweet Man That's Worth The Salt Of My Tears", "Just Like A Butterfly That's Caught In The Rain", "Glad Rag Doll", "Let It Rain", "Lonely Avenue", "Wide River To Cross", "When The Curtain Comes Down" and more.

King (Japan), 1985. New Copy .... $19.99 Out Of Stock
One of our favorite Japanese jazz players of all time – still sounding wonderful on this date from the mid 80s! Akira Miyazawa's easily the most soulful tenorist to come out of the Japanese scene of the 60s – and here, he works with a free, open approach to his horn that almost reminds us of Sonny Stitt in his later years – a really masterful way of opening up, yet never losing his groove – rhythmic, even in some of the most laidback moments – with an inherent sense of swing that matches his depth of tone. Many tracks are ballads, but blown way past obvious interpretations – and in addition to piano trio backing, the set's got some strings too – although Akira's tenor is always very strongly out front in the mix – a quality that makes the record feel like a Verve "with strings" set from the 50s. Titles include "Round Midnight", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "Poor Butterfly", "I Can't Get Started", and "My One & Only Love".

Classic-styled funk from Alex Puddu – not only the greatest record we've heard from him so far, but a set that's definitely worthy of its "golden age" claim in the title! The music is all new, but it was done for a series of short Danish porno films from the 70s – and Puddu gets a sound that's right on the money for the vintage – loads of great short funky soundtrack modes that are perfect for the time – handled with tight rhythms, great basslines, and some wicked jazzy solos that really send the whole thing home. The clubby jazz funk debut of Freeez – plus the Anti-Freeez remix album from a couple years later – issued together along with even more bonus material in this great 2CD set! Dancefloor ready live band grooving is the warmly beating heart of the Freeez sound at this early point – with heated drums and killer basslines driving it – clearly influenced by late 70s international club sounds, but with this great, tight energy and dexterous musicianship that could only come from a real, functioning, true band. Nice stuff! Disc One includes the original album & remixes: "Mariposa (Butterfly)", "Caribbean Winter", "Easy On The Onions", "Sunset", "Flying High", "Roller Chase", "First Love" and more from the original, plus bonus tracks including "Ainti-Freeez (Set Me Free) – Disco Version", "Fly By Night", "Flying High (12" Remix)" and more. Disc Two includes early singles, demos, instrumentals and the complete Anti-Freeez remix album from 1984 – with "Keep In Touch", "Hot Footing It", "Stay", "Roller Chase (1984 Remix)", "Alone (1984 Remix)", "One To One (1984 Remix)", "Caribbean Winter (1984 Remix)", "Say You Will Be My Lover (Previously Unreleased Demo)" and more. 30 tracks on 2CDs.

new Danyel Gerard — Danyel Gerard ... LP
Verve/MGM, 1972. Used Gatefold .... $0.49 Out Of Stock
A weird bit of folk funk rock – and really a strange one! The album was recorded during the Mike Curb years at MGM – and has a similar pop crossover, adult hip kind of sound to some of Curb's other big success stories. The sound's certainly a bit schmaltzy now – although the track "Let's Love" is a nice spacey groover with a flanged-out pop sound. Songs include "Butterfly", "From Japan To America", "Low Lay Low", "Teddy Bear", "Harlequin", "Caroline", "Face Of A Clown", "The Gun", "Rain", "Elie Lama Sabacthani", and "Let's Love".
(White label promo. Cover has edge wear and a bit of marker. Back cover has a DJ sticker.)

Various — Red Bird Girls – Very First Time In True Stereo 1964 to 1966 ... CD
Red Bird/Real Gone, 1960s. New Copy Gatefold .... $16.99 17.98
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful girl group and solo sounds from vaults of Red Bird – that wonderful label founded by songwriting giants Lieber & Stoller in the 60s – stereo masters from '64-'66! The label came out of the girl group boom earlier in the decade, so some of the material blew up big on the charts while a great deal of it fell by the pop wayside. The thing is, ALL of it wonderful – sweet, soaring pop soul majesty from some of the best songwriters and loveliest voices of their time! Great singles by The Goodies, The Jelly Beans, The Ad-Libs, Ellie Greenwich, Evie Sands, The Butterflys, The Charmettes, The Young Generation and more – stuff that truly rivals The Wall Of Sound! Include "The Dum Dum Ditty" by The Goodies, "The Kind Of Boy You Can't Forget", "I Wanna Love Him So Bad" and "How Fine Can One Guy Be" by The Jelly Beans, "The Boy From New York City" and "I'm Just A Down Home Girl" by The Ad-Libs, "You Don't Know" and "Another Boy Like Mine" by Ellie Greenwich, "I Can't Let Go" and "Take Me For A Little While" by Evie Sands, "Gee Baby Gee" by The Butterflys, "The Hideaway" by The Young Generation, "He's So Easy To Love" by Roddie Joy and more..
