Dave Frishberg's always getting some fun out of life – given the way he pens these witty little tunes, and sings them with a hell of a lot of charm! And this album's one to feature Frishberg at all his charming best – still with the jaunty, edgey qualities we love so much in Oaklahoma Toad, but turned back more towards more traditional jazz elements too – all set nicely into a small combo jazz mode, with help from Bob Findley on trumpet and Marshall Royal on alto – both horn players who give the album a fleshed-out feel that's a nice change from some of Dave's more piano/vocal-based records. Guitarist Pierre Dorge has been giving us amazing music for many years – but he sounds especially amazing here in the company of a really great group – the excellent Kirk Knuffke on cornet, plus Stephen Riley on tenor, Conrad Herwig on trombone, Jay Anderson on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums – all very dynamic players who seem to make Dorge sound even fresher than ever! There's an especially strong sense of phrasing on the record – no surprise, especially with Knuffke in the mix – and while Pierre can sometimes use his instrument in more abstract ways, that quality is really balanced by all the other members of the lineup. Anderson's bass is great – nicely pointed at the best moments, and a great contrast to Dorge's strings – and all tracks are originals, with titles that include "Lullaby For Sun Ra", "Mingus' Birthday Party", "Afrikaa Mbizo Dyani", "Sim Sim Ba", and "Alligator In Paradise". Longform Grateful Dead at its best – a set from the group's earliest years, but already showing their strength in terms of live improvisation and instrumental creativity – proof that the sort of things that bootleggers lived for didn't always just happen in the 70s and 80s! A funky bit of blues from Otis Rush – the guitarist's debut album, and a surprisingly great batch of tracks recorded at Fame Studios! Production is by Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, who are clearly going for more of a crossover sound than Rick Hall might have given the set – but that approach is a strong one, as it really brings a hard focus on Rush's guitar, and sets his slyly sliding vocals a bit more back in the mix. Sweet electric Chicago blues before it got over-Alligatorized – with tracks that include "Feel So Bad", "Baby I Love You So", "Me", "Working Man", "You're Killing My Love", and "Can't Wait No Longer".
