✨✧ Nancy Wilson, Joe Henderson, Chick Corea, etcEchoes Of An Era 2 – The Concert ... LP
Elektra, 1982. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Not only a great follow-up to the first Echoes Of An Era session, but also a standout 80s performance from Nancy Wilson – quite possibly her best of the decade! The setting is nice and laidback – a live date with a core combo that features Joe Henderson on tenor, Chick Corea on piano, Stanley Clarke on acoustic bass, and Lenny White on drums – plus steller vocals from Wilson, who's really at home in the setting – stretching out beautifully on the long tracks, and coming into play with the soloists at a level that's quite different from her more polished studio records. Clarke's bass is a delight, too – a great reminder that his talents didn't always lie in the electric realm during the 80s – and Henderson, as you might guess, provides some soulful undercurrents that reallyg round the whole proceedings. Titles include "500 Miles High", "Round Midnight", "Rhythm A Ning", "My One & Only Love", "Them There Eyes", and "I Want To Be Happy". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rare SilkNew Weave ... CD
Polydor, 1983. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A way hipper record than you'd guess from a group with a name like "Rare Silk" – and some of the best group jazz vocalese recorded in the 80s! The group is a quartet of voices – 3 female, 1 male – and they come together in a style that's far less hokey than most of the other practictioners of this mode at the time – a timeless sort of hipster approach that's really got a lot of the same sort of energy as Mark Murphy on Muse! Backing is small combo jazz on all numbers, with some really sweet keyboards on a few of the best tracks – and titles include versions of Flip Nunez's "Happying", Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay", Richie Cole's "New York Afternoon", Chick Corea's "Spain", Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar", and Eddie Harris' "You Know It's Wrong". ✨✧ Singers UnlimitedA Capella 3 ... LP
MPS, 1979. Sealed ... $9.99
Three guys, one gal, and nothing else – just voices with no other instrumentation, and one of the best-ever realizations of the amazing Singers Unlimited sound! Although often associated with the superb studio sound of the MPS label, the group were often at their best when just working vocally – letting the voices fold over one another, grow in the warmth of their company, and issue forth in beautiful waves of sound that no other groups could ever hope to match. The production is impeccable – beautifully rich and deep, with a sonic quality that never even needs the missing instruments in the session – and there's also a surprising groove here too, but one that's never forged through hokey tricks or gimmicks. Titles include the sublime "One More Time Chick Corea", plus "Anything Goes", "The Way We Were", "All The Things You Are", "I Wish You Love", "Someone To Light Up My Life", and "Sweet Lorraine". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing on Pausa, still sealed with a cutout hole.)

✨✧ Chaka Khan & Jazz All-StarsEchoes Of An Era ... LP
Elektra, 1982. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A really unique album for Chaka Khan – one in which she teams up with a host of jazz artists to craft a classic-styled set of vocals! Given that Chaka was at the height of her 80s groove solo career at the time of this one, the move is a surprising one – but also a great chance for Chaka to show that she has a lot more to offer than just pop chops, as she sounds pretty darn great scatting on these classic jazz numbers. And as proof that the set was definitely a serious jazz effort, Chaka's got a great lineup on the album – a group that includes Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor, Chick Corea on piano, and Lenny White on drums. Titles include "Them There Eyes", "All Of Me", "Take The A Train", "Hire Wire", "The Aerialist", and "I Hear Music". (Soul, Vocalists) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Esperanza SpaldingJunjo ... CD
Ayva (Spain), 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful little record that's like few other we can think of – the debut of bassist Esperanza Spaulding, a player who also sings along wordlessly with her strings! The style is quite unique, and completely great – and Esperanza's really opened up a whole new territory here with her compelling approach. The lineup here includes piano and drums next to the bass and vocals – brought together with a warmth that recalls some of the best freedoms of mainstream 70s jazz piano sides, touched with modes from Brazilian jazz – but again, the work is done in a fresh approach here that's uniquely its own! Titles include great versions of Jimmy Rowles "The Peacocks", Egberto Gismonti's "Loro", and Chick Corea's "Humpty Dumpty" – plus the originals "Two Bad", "Perazela", "Mompouana", and "Perazuan". (Neo Soul, Vocalists) CD
