Tremendous stuff – an ultra-groovy 70s album from Nelson Riddle – with a sweet style that's very much like his two classics for MPS at the time! The songs are all Michel Legrand numbers – more than enough to entice our ears – and Riddle handles them with a nice mix of lush instrumentation and tighter rhythms – so that there's usually a nice gentle groove to the music, which works perfectly for Legrand's tunes! A standout 60s soundtrack from the great Manos Hadjidakis – penned for a heist thriller from director Jules Dassin! The music follows slightly off the Dassin/Hadjidakis pairing on Never On A Sunday – using lots of familiar Greek elements, but moving these into more complicated film score modes as well – particularly on some of the cool mood-setting numbers you'd find in a heist film of this vintage – a surprisingly great setting for some of the more exotic moments in the music. Fantastic soundtrack work for the Stranger Things series from Netflix – a narrative set in the early 80s, and scored here with a sound that really gets that era right! This isn't schlocky 80s keyboard work, nor some sort of easy retro motif – and instead, the team of Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein go for sort of the coolest moods and styles that were being used in film scores during the time – especially the spare keyboards and careful electronics that were just right for a sci-fi or sophisticated horror story!
