✨✧ TreniersGo Go Go – A Proper Introduction To The Treniers ... CD
Proper (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing early work from The Treniers – a hip vocal combo that wound up to be one of the raunchiest in 50s R&B! The set goes farther than any other collection of the group's early work that we've seen – in that it features a whopping 26 tracks, pulled both from their recordings for the Mercury and Okeh label – spanning years that run from 1947 to 1953, and which show them as incredibly witty, goofy, and hard-rocking even during their first years in the studio! The titles alone should give you a great idea of the playful feel of the tracks – and they include "Plenty Of Money", "Poon-Tang", "Rockin Is Our Bizness", "Hi-Yo Silver", "Rock Bottom", "I'm Going Back To My Convertible Cadillac", "Go Go Go", "Why Did You Get So High Shorty", "It's A Quiet Town", and "Oooh! Looka There Ain't She Pretty". CD

✨✧ AtmosfearDancing In Outer Space ... CD
Sequel (UK), 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
An amazing album of spacey dancefloor tunes – and the first-ever proper reissue of work by the legendary UK outfit Atmosfear! Atmosfear had a revolutionary electronic disco sound that's probably best compared to the Patrick Adams or Cloud One work for the P&P label in the US – and the tracks on this set sparkle with splashy beats, tranced-out keyboards, flipped-up bass, and nice jazzy riffs to keep the whole thing in a soulful mode. If you've never heard the group, this one will blow your mind – and if you only have one or two of their original tracks on other compilations, you'll appreciate all the previously unreissued tracks on this 10-song set! Titles include "Outer Space", "Motivation", "Extract", "Alternative II", "Extra Special", "Interplay", "Return of LB", and their classic "Dancing In Outerspace", laid out in the full 9 minute 12" version! ✨✧ Minnie RipertonPerfect Angel (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Capitol, 1974. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Minnie Riperton's first album for Epic – and the record that broke her from a hip Chicago underground artist into one of the seventies' biggest female soul stars! The record moves past the baroque soul of Minnie's early years with Rotary Connection and Charles Stepney – and hits a mix of mellow compressed LA styles and slicker funkier numbers that do the same thing for her Chicago-trained vocals that Rufus' backing did for that of Chaka Khan. Of course, it helps that she's got some superbly sensitive writing and arranging help by husband Richard Rudolph – and Stevie Wonder's definitely lurking in the background, too – not credited with production, due to contractual reasons, although he helped put most of the album together. Includes Minnie's huge crossover hit "Loving You", a perfect showcase for her beautiful 5 octave voice, plus the tracks "Our Lives", "Every Time He Comes Around", "Perfect Angel", and "Reasons". This legendary album finally gets its proper treatment – with very detailed notes from Minnie's husband/co-creator Richard Rudolph – and 11 bonus tracks from the vault – including "Lovin You (single version with countdown)", "Reasons (ext version)", "It's So Nice (ext version)", "Take A Little Trip (duet with Stevie Wonder)", "Seeing You This Way (acoustic)", "Edge Of A Dream (ext version)", "Perfect Angel (ext version)", "Every Time He Comes Along (ext version)", "Don't Let Anyone Bring You Down (Perfect Angel version)", "Lovin You (alt band version)", and "Our Lives (ext version)". Really fantastic – great sound and the bonus tracks are beautiful! CD

✨✧ VariousRight On! Vol 2 – More Breakbeats & Grooves From The Atlantic & Warner Vaults ... CD
Warner (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent 2nd volume to this killer set of tracks pulled from the Warner and Atlantic catalogs during the glory days of their soul and funk years! This volume's even more interesting than the first one – and features a huge bunch of cuts that have never been reissued, either on proper or improper reissues (if you know what we mean, wink wink!) As with the first volume, this one focuses on funky material that can or should be sampled – and there's plenty of nice breaks to go around for everyone! Tracks include "Wanaoh" by Black Heat, "Rien Ne Va Plus" by Funk Factory, "Right On" by Clarence Wheeler & the Enforcers, "Giggin Down 103rd" by Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, "Sandy's Love" by Harold Alexander, "Funky" by Freddie King, "South Street Soul" by Freddie Hubbard, "It's Your Thing" by Shirley Scott, "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" by Donny Hathaway, "Teasin" by King Curtis, "Almendra" by Macondo, "Soul Flow" by Paul Kelly, "Gang Bang" by Oscar Brown Jr, and "Get Ready" by Ella Fitzgerald. ✨✧ VariousSaint Etienne Present Songs For The Carnegie Deli ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Saint Etienne have brought us a number of wonderful compilations over the years – both in this format for Ace Records, and their work on their own great Croydon Municipal label – yet as much as we've loved all those others, we may well love this one the best – as it's a sublime blend of 60s soul, tear-stained pop, and cool numbers with a New York sort of sound! The focus is mostly on tracks from the mid 60s – and the work here often feels like the special sort of tracks the Brill Building talents might have been working on into the night, before stepping down to the Carnegie Deli for a snack – the kind of special songs that were often too sophisticated to make the charts, but which stand out all these many years later as true moments of genius from the 60s. As usual with a Saint Etienne set, there's a huge amount here we've never heard before – all given proper presentation by Ace Records, along with a full booklet of notes. Titles include "Night Hawk" by The Valli Boys, "Deep Dark Secret" by Dee Sharp, "Up On The Bridge" by The Chiffons, "Don't" by Marva Josie, "I'm Your Man" by Chuck Jackson, "Boy You Love Me" by Joan Moody, "Catch Me In The Meadow" by The Tradewinds, "He's A Lover" by Tutti Hill, "Let's Stop Fooling Ourselves" by Eddie Jones, "Is This The Way To Treat A Girl" by The Hesitations, "Summer's Comin In" by Little Anthony & The Imperials, and "Park Avenue" by Lou Johnson. ✨✧ VariousCellarful Of Motown – The Rarest Detroit Grooves ... CD
Motown, 1960s/1970s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Way more than just a "cellarful" of Motown – a wealth of great tracks, all of which are previously unreleased! This incredible 2CD set is a landmark in the history of both Motown and Northern Soul – as it brings together 40 tracks that were recorded in the glory days of the Detroit scene, but never issued at the time. A number of cuts on the set have risen to fame over the years as bootlegs floating around the UK club scene, and they're issued properly here for the first time ever, along side other lost gems that will soon become new classics to a generation of soul fans – all wrapped up in one great package filled with notes on the music, and listing the origins of the tunes! Titles include "My Sugar Baby" by Frank Wilson, "Baby A Go Go" by Barbara McNair, "How Can I" by Brenda Holloway, "He Was Really Sayin Somethin" by Earl Van Dyke, "Until You Came Along" by Carolyn Crawford, "Before It's Over" by Sammy Ward, "Long Gone Lover" by Velvelettes, "If You Ever Get Your Hands On Me" by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "Lucky Lucky Me" by Jimmy Ruffin, "I Wish I Liked You" by Marvin Gaye, "You Made Me Feel Like" by Syreeta, "Don't Let Me Down" by Kim Weston, "Don't Put Off Till Tomorrow What You Can Do Today" by The Monitors, and "It Must Be Love Baby" by Chuck Jackson & Yvonne Fair. Lots lots more, and filled with wonderful tunes! CD

✨✧ VariousWhat It Is – Funky Soul & Rare Grooves (3 CD Set) ... CD
Rhino, Late 1960s/1970s. Used 4 CD ... Out Of Stock
One of the funkiest box sets we've ever seen – and amazingly issued by an American major label! The package is a treasure trove of funky work from a decade of Warner Brothers, Atlantic Records, and related labels – tunes pulled both from mainstream releases and much more obscure 45s! This one goes way past some of the silly "decade" sets from Rhino, and really displays a new level of cool and connoisseurship – one that finally appreciates the rich depths of funky work at their fingertips, most of which has not been properly reissued in the US! Tracks include "Gangster Of Love (part 1)/Gangster Of Love (part 2)" by "Get In The Groove/Somebody's In The World For You" by Mighty Hannibal, "Tampin/Oleancler" by Rhine Oaks, "It's Your Thing/Bring It Home To Me" by Cold Grits, "Stanga/Somebody's Watching You" by Little Sister, "Gossip/Tell Me What's On Your Mind" by Cyril Neville, "Engine #9/International Playboy" by Wilson Pickett, "Funky Nassau (part 1)/Funky Nassau (part 2)" by Beginning Of The End, "Mockingbird Sally/Nuki Suki" by Little Richard, "Funky To The Bone/I Want To Dance, Dance Dance" by Freddi Henchi & The Soul Setters", "California Dreamin' (vocal)/California Dreamin' (instrumental)" by Eddie Hazel and more! ✨✧ Lisa Lisa & Cult JamLisa Lisa & Cult Jam With Full Force ... CD
Columbia, 1985. Used ... Out Of Stock
An 80s pop soul classic from Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam with Full Force – insistent and irresistible to this day – and a solid album full of tunes that stand up strongly with their unstoppable hit singles of the period! Yes, the sound would get a bit too cutesy and played out by the end of the 80s, if you lived through those years, but it's amazing how nice it sounds all these years later! There's nice dose of electro and early hip hop creeping in, it's the breakout "I Wonder If I Take You Home" is, straight-up, one of our favorite mid 80s mainstream R&B jams. Also includes "Can You Feel The Beat", "You'll Never Change", "All Cried Out", "This Is Cult Jam", "Behind My Eyes", "Private Property" and "Take Me Home (Rap)". CD

✨✧ Mighty ImperialsThunder Chicken (Desco) ... CD
Desco, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Super-heavy funk from late great Desco Records scene! The Mighty Imperials were one of the best funky 45 groups to record for mighty deep funk Desco label – and their first album never properly saw the light of day, thanks to some pressing and distribution messups before the demise of the company. Now, the whole thing's finally out officially – a funky treasure that sounds like a lost 70s gem, and which has almost as much mystique, given the status of the original record! The core combo features organ, drums, bass, and super-heavy guitar – and the album also features them recording with some additional vocal help from Joseph Henry! Henry sings in a mode that's very similar to Lee Fields' work with the deep funk scene – and his vocals are on a number of tracks on the album – leaving the rest as groovy funky instrumentals with a nice heavy late 60s sock-boogaloo sound! Includes covers of "Never Found A Girl" and "Cold Sweat" – plus originals "Soul Buster pt 1", "Chico's Barnyard", "Kick The Blanket", "Thunder Chicken", and "Joseph's Popcorn". (Deep Funk, Soul) CD

✨✧ Dee Dee WarwickI Want To Be With You – The Mercury/Blue Rock Sessions ... CD
Mercury/Hip-O, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent work by Dionne Warwick's soulful sister! Dee Dee is one of the great unsung heroes of 60s soul – and although she cut a fair bit of work back in the day, much of it is yet to be properly reissued. That situation has changed for the better with this excellent set – a 26 track compilation of Dee Dee's work for the Mercury/Blue Rock label, recorded during the years 1965 to 1973, and including the bulk of her rare albums Foolish Fool and I Want To Be With You, plus a number of even rarer singles! Arrangements are by the likes of Ed Townsend, Horace Ott, and others – and Dee Dee's approach is a hard soul take on the uptown groove, handled with an equal balance of poise and raw energy. Titles include "Locked In Your Love", "We're Doing Fine", "Next Time You Fall In Love", "Ring Of Bright Water", "All The Love That Went To Waste", "Don't You Ever Give Up On Me", "Girls Need Love", "It's Not Fair", "Foolish Fool", "Another Lonely Saturday Baby", and "You Don't Know What You Do To Me".
