Sure, it's a greatest hits set – but it's a damn good one! This 2LP set was always an essential part of our crates back in the 80s, because it includes an excellent range of James Brown work from the 60s and 70s – including a number of strong funky cuts, presented here in the original single versions. Titles include "Give It Up Or Turn It Loose", "There Was A Time", "I Got The Feelin", "Mother Popcorn", "Sex Machine", "Make It Funky", "Talkin Loud & Sayin Nothin", "Payback", "Get On The Good Foot", "My Thang", "Papa Don't Take No Mess", and "Funky President". Kool & the Gang —
Forever ... LP Polygram, 1986. Sealed ...
$4.99
Amazing work from Kool & The Gang – from a period when they were pushing past their tight early funky sound, into a super-dope mix of electronics and spacey jamming that is still pretty darn revolutionary today! Although you might think the album would be a bit disco by the date, it's not – and instead has the group moving more towards a style of cosmic righteousness that was undoubtedly influenced by the early work (and success) of Earth, Wind, & Fire. The album has a few live cuts - including an amazing 8 minute long live version of "Summer Madness", with an extended keyboard solo that's just great! Other titles include "Cosmic Energy", "Do It Right Now", "Universal Sound", and a remake of "Hollywood Swinging". CD
(Out of print original US pressing with a punch through the barcode.)
Stone cold great collection of funk cuts by this legendary group – all wrapped up in a nice package with a good memory for the hits! Tracks include monsters like "Chocolate City", "Up For The Down Stroke", "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)", "P. Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)", "Bop Gun", "Flash Light", "Aqua Boogie", and "Mothership Connection (Star Child)". Why even bother going out of the house? CD
James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. Includes a monster of a bonus track: the 19+ minute complete take of "Escape-ism". CD

Cameo —
Word Up! ... LP Atlanta/Polygram, 1986. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
A mid-80s classic from Cameo – one that showed the world that the group was still very much in the funky music game, even if their lineup had been reduced to a trio! Larry Blackmon's still at the head of the group – singing, drumming, and playing bass throughout – with plenty of support on keyboards and a variety of instruments from an army of session players called in for the record. The style's a bit less on the heavy funk tip of earlier Cameo records, but also steps along nicely in that mellower, midtempo groove that proved to be a great refuge for funk bands as the 80s wore on – a mode that's slightly romantic at times, but always handled with a bit of bounce at the bottom. Titles include "Word Up", "Candy", "She's Mine", "Don't Be Lonely", "Back & Forth", and "You Can Have The World". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a square razor mark in front and is lightly bent at the bottom right corner.)

Louis Jordan —
Rock N Roll ... CD Polygram (France), 1957. Used ...
Out Of Stock
A full set of Louis Jordan's excellent work for Mercury Records in the mid 50s – material that often reworks his older songs, but with a lean, mean vibe that's got a lot more early rock and R&B touches! The instrumentation is razor-sharp – often with searing sax solos from the man himself, and a groove that has all the other players hitting hard on the rhythms – romping in a way that definitely lives up to the rock and roll of the title, but with a quality that reminds us that Jordan was one of the originators, and not just some older talent trying to cash in on the new scene! CD features 21 tracks in all – and titles include "Run Joe", "Salt Pork West Virginia", "Beware Brother Beware", "Knock Me A Kiss", "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens", "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying", "The Jamp", "Ella Mae", "Saturday Night Fish Fry", and "Morning Light". Kool & The Gang —
Celebrate ... LP De-Lite/Polygram, 1980. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
A super-huge album for Kool & The Gang – and for good reason too! The set features their massive hit "Celebration" – a cut that firmly planted the group in the mainstream, and which keeps getting countless play over the decades – probably still earning them a fortune in royalties year after year from wedding bands alone! The group's got some great help on the record from Deodato – the Brazilian keyboardist who scored big with his own records in the 70s – and who's working here to arrange, conduct, and produced the album with a sweet jazzy finish! In a way, it's Deodato's ear for a great warm groove that really seems to make the set sparkle – giving it a strong soul sound, even with tighter production – still somewhat down to earth, despite its hit status – that core quality that's always made Kool & The Gang so great! Apart from "Celebration", other tracks include "Jones Vs Jones", "Love Festival", "Love Affair", "Night People", and "Morning Star". LP, Vinyl record album
The single's a stunning house remix of the tune "Higher", lifted from Monday's Optimista album, and redone here as a monster dancefloor track with a bucketfull of soul! Joe Clausell handled the mixes, and he brings out the best side of Monday's songwriting – and blends some warm deep house grooves with a nice spare acoustic breakdown in the middle of the track. Excellent stuff – and super-soulful! (Neo Soul, Soul)12-inch, Vinyl record

David Axelrod —
Seriously Deep ... CD Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ...
Out Of Stock
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! (Jazz, Soul)CD

Monday Michiru —
Mermaid ... LP Polygram (Japan), 1998. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
An EP release – but one that offers up a great standout moment in the career of Monday Michiru – and a record that has the power to knock away most other contemporary soul of the time! Monday's picking up a bit more of a clubby vibe than her earlier years – getting great help from Masters At Work on a remix of "Sunshine After The Rain" – which was one of our favorite tracks from the Jazz Brat album! She also serves up a uniquely rhythmic take on the Minnie Riperton classic "Lovin You" – alongside other good cuts that include "Love Flow", "Far To Go", "Where Is The Passion", and the instrumental track "Mermaid". (Neo Soul, Soul)LP, Vinyl record album
A gospel set, but one with plenty of 80s soul touches too – sung by this cool female group who remind us a lot of The Clark Sisters, especially in the way they can crossover with their sound! The themes are spiritual, but the tunes are mighty soulful – orchestrated with styles that are more 80s modern soul than gospel – nice and warm, and really never overdone. Titles include "Sunshine", "Behold", "I'll Fly Away", "Can't You See The Light", and "One Always". (Gospel, Soul)LP, Vinyl record album
Angela Winbush —
Real Thing ... LP Polygram, 1989. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
A really wonderful album of polished 80s soul – a key effort from Angela Winbush after the breakup of Rene & Angela! Angela was one of the artists who reminded us throughout the 80s that underneath the gloss of the reigning production style of the day, solid songwriting still wins out – and here, in the years before she went on to help the Isleys revive their careers, she's stepping out as a proud solo act on her own. The more laid back numbers are the ones we're going for here, but Angela also does a respectable job with some of the more radio oriented material too. Titles include "It's The Real Thing", "Thank You Love", "Lay Your troubles Down", 'Please Bring Your Love Back", "Menage A Trois", "I've Learned To Respect (The Power Of Love)" and "I'll Never Be The Same". LP, Vinyl record album
Music from Sugar Pie DeSanto, the Contours, the Velvelettes, Fontella Bass & Bobby McClure, Jimmy Castor, Junior Walker, Shorty Long, Charlie Rich, Dean & Jean, James Brown, Laura Lee, and more. CD

Tanya Blount —
Natural Thing ... CD Polygram/Universal (Japan), 1994. New Copy ...
Out Of Stock
Tanya Blount's got a great way with a mellower, more laidback version of 90s R&B – that kind of slow-kicking groove that still has beats, but used in a spacious style to slowly percolate the background – while Tanya soars right out front with a really wonderful reach in her vocal range! The style's not unique for the time, but Blount really serves it up better than most – making her debut sparkle all the way through, on tracks that include "Is It Love", "Through The Rain", "I'm Gonna Make You Mine", "Love Ballad", "Spend Another Night", "Hold On", and "For All The Right Reasons". CD

Cameo —
Single Life ... LP Atlanta/Polygram, 1985. Near Mint- ...
Out Of Stock
After beginning life as a super fuzzed-out psychasouladelic band, Parliament emerged as one of the best pop-funk combos of the mid/late 70s – with a tight tight sound that mixed the smooth major label sound of Casablanca with the mad funk genius of George Clinton. This huge 3LP set brings together some of the band's best tracks from their glory years of the late 70s – when they were hitting the charts and selling a huge amount of albums to college kids stoned out of their mind waiting for the mothership to land. Tracks include "P-Funk (Wants To Get Funked Up)", "Mothership Connection (Star Child)", "Testify", "Mr. Wiggles", "Bop Gun", "Up For The Down Stroke", "Theme From The Black Hole", "Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)", "Flashlight", "Ride On", "Rumpofsteelskin", "Agony Of Defeet", and "Children Of Production". 25 tracksin all! CD
Righteous and soulful! The work that Nina Simone did at Philips is among some of her best work ever – and this set features 12 great cuts that aren't always that easy to find on wax. Includes the anthemic feminist classic "Four Women", the slightly-funky "Mississippi Goddam", the moody "Wild Is The Wind", the righteous "Break Down & Let It All Out", and the heavenly version of "I Loves You, Porgy", which just about surpasses all other recorded versions! (Vocalists, Soul)CD
An odd collection of tracks, but they're all great, and the set's an excellent batch of some of Chandler's harder-to-find material from the mid and late 60s! The tracks are pulled from his years at Chess, Brunswick, and Mercury (one of the advantages of the recent Universal/Polygram merger!) – and there's a total of 10 songs, including "Rainbow '65 (part 2)", "To Be True", "Groovy Situation", "I Won't Need You", "Think Nothing About It", "From The Teacher To The Preacher", "To Be A Lover", "I Fooled You This Time", "River Of Tears", and "Nothing Can Stop Me". CD
A great little electro groover from Fatback – less funky and more beat-heavy than the group's other work – but a great crossover tune with a heck of a pretty hook! Dance version has a nice mix by Francois K, too! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Polygram sleeve, with light wear and an index label.)

Brian Auger —
Genesis ... LP Polydor, Late 60s/1974. Very Good+ ...
Out Of Stock
US collection of work by Brian Auger from the late 60s – released on Polygram, most likely to cash in on the fame he was having with the Oblivion Express group. Not that that fame was that great, though – and frankly, we always like this stuff a lot better, as Brian's funky organ is leaner and meaner, and the R&B influences are a lot closer to the core. The record features some groovy remakes – like a wonderfully baroque-yet-funky version of "A Day In The Life", a moody version of Wes Montgomery's "Bumpin On Sunset", and a crazy 7 minute version of Donovan's "Season Of The Witch" that turns the track into a slow grooving dancefloor number! (Jazz, Soul)LP, Vinyl record album
A great bass-heavy groover from The Gap Band – pulled off one of their best albums ever, Gap Band IV! The cut's got some really great funky bits on the bottom – acoustic piano wrapped around some more electric rhythms, in a blend that keeps the track as soulful as it is catchy! 12-inch, Vinyl record
THE standout cut from Central Line – a track so big that it got the group noticed over here on our side of the Atlantic, and forever gave them a place in the hallowed halls of 80s groove! The tune chugs along at a great roller skating rhythm – with some spare use of keyboards that pepper the track alongside the catchy vocals – all made even better here on a super-sweet Larry Levan mix! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Man, if there's an unpopped bass left in the house after this one's through, we'll be surprised! The Gap Band were one of the bigger bass-heavy funk acts of the early 80s – and Polygram did all their fans a favor by culling together the 12" mixes of some of their bigger cuts. The set includes the perennial sample favorite "Outstanding", plus "You Dropped A Bomb On Me", "Party Train", "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance", and "Burn Rubber". LP, Vinyl record album
An 80s groove classic! "Outstanding" has some wonderful funky grooves and a killer 80s sound that's complete with very fat bass pedal grooves, and some tight keyboard work! The hook's a monster, and this rare single offers up 2 versions not on the LP! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Post-Polygram, but still some nice funkiness from this classic 70s group. The record's got much of the feel of their early 70s work – with lots of tasty electric keyboards, soulful percussion, and an always-driving groove. Titles include "Disco Lypso", "Honey Butt", "Ratchet", and "Aqua Magic". LP, Vinyl record album
A seminal bit of post-disco club – the standout hit by German madrockers Trio – and a tune that always captures our ears, no matter how many times we hear it! 12-inch, Vinyl record
