Gene McDanielsHit After Hit ... LP
Liberty, 1962. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A well-titled album, as it features some of Gene's big early hits, mixed along with lesser-known gems – all done in that proud, loud style he used before becoming the Headless Hero! Snuff Garrett produced most of the work, and the tunes have a bold approach that certainly draws from the Liberty pop sound of the time – but which also has the same righteous soul touches that you might find in Lou Rawls work of the time, and which makes Gene a key link between Lou and earlier singers like Roy Hamilton or Tommy Edwards. Titles include "A Hundred Pounds Of Clay", "Chip Chip", "I Don't Want To Cry", "Tower Of Strength", "A Tear", "Send For Me", and "Point Of No Return". LP, Vinyl record album
(Rainbow label stereo pressing. Cover has light wear and some yellowing from age.)

Ike & Tina TurnerWorkin' Together/Let Me Touch Your Mind ... CD
Liberty/BGO (UK), 1971/1972. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
A pair of late Ike & Tina albums in a single package! Workin' Together is a pivotal album – one that has them still retaining some of the earthiness of earlier years, yet also honing their groove for the crossover audience that was digging them big at the end of the 60s! The best results of this shift is the increasing funk component in their music – a move away from R&B into a tighter 60s groove, one that often featured very strong guitar parts in its best incarnation. The set includes the classic "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter", plus "Ooh Poo Pah Doo", "Let It Be", "Goodbye So Long", "You Can Have It", "The Way You Love Me", "Get Back", and "Workin Together". Let Me Touch Your Mind is a fairly loose set of diverse material from the tumultuous duo, from the tender, lovely chorus backed and string accented grit of the title track to more stripped down, kinda country funk accented number. Includes "Annie Had A Baby", "Don't Believe Her", "Early One Morning", "Up On The Roof", "Heaven Help Us All" and more. CD

Timi YuroWhat's A Matter Baby ... LP
Liberty, Early 60s. Very Good ... $3.99
A nice batch of pop soul on Liberty from Timi Yuro – an underappreciated vocalist who walked that fine line between uptown soul and pop vocals! Like so many Liberty recordings of the era, the arrangements are big and polished, courtesty of Bert Keyes. The backing vocals are just as sparking, provided the Johnnny Mann singers and the Gospel Pearls. Includes the title cut, plus "For Your Love", "The Right Time", "That's Right, Walk On By", and "I Waited Too Long". Fragile little girl stuff, with more soul than you'd expect! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has some light surface wear, clear tape on bottom seam.)

✨✧ Brass ConstructionAttitudes ... LP
Liberty, 1982. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet 80s groove from Brass Construction – still with Randy Muller at the helm, but with a sound that's a bit more bassy than before! Trademark Brass Construction horns still make an appearance on the set, but there's almost more focus on the keyboards – which, along with the bass, help give the group an even leaner, cleaner sound – all balanced perfectly with Muller's impeccable sense of rhythm! Randy produced and arranged the whole set himself – and titles include "Do That Thang", "Forever Love", "Funtimes", "Hot Dog", "ETC", and "Can You See The Light". LP, Vinyl record album

Liberty/Bluebird, 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from Dayton – the kind of bouncy, funky combo who really put Ohio soul on the map at the start of the 80s! The group's got a wonderfully tight ensemble style that mixes both male and female vocals with bumping bass and sweet jazzy keyboards – all very much in a mode that's similar to some of their Capitol label contemporaries – like BB&Q Band or Mystic Merlin – with perhaps just an undercurrent of the Roger/Zapp sound too. Titles include the groover "Cutie Pie", plus the tracks "Let Me Know", "Wanna Be Your Man", "You Lift Me Up", and "Fool Was He". Includes bonus track "The Sound Of Music (ext remix)". CD

✨✧ XavierPoint Of Pleasure ... LP
Liberty, 1981. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Classic 80s funk from Xavier – a group led by bassist Ernest Smith, who'd already had plenty of practice working with Isaac Hayes, The Midnight Movers, and The Coasters during their funky late 60s years! The groove here is similar to some of the other tight funk groups on Liberty at the time – especially Dayton – but Xavier's groove is a bit leaner, too – very nicely turned towards a modern dancefloor with its emphasis on bass upfront in the mix, in a mode that's often nicely placed between boogie and rollerskating jams! Ayanna Little sings lead vocals with Xavier – and the set also features some wicked keyboard work from Rahni Harris – on tracks that include "What Goes Around", "Truly Devoted", "Work That Sucker To Death", and "Love Is On The One". ✨✧ Timi YuroSoul ... LP
Liberty, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
"Soul" is right – and "excellent" is also! Timi Yuro's early 60s work is fantastic – and is part diva bluesy soul, ala Etta James or Lorez Alexandria, and part country soul, ala Ray Charles or Brook Benton. Her voice is incredible, with a clear tone, yet heartbreaking edge – and this album features great arrangements by Belford Hendricks, backed by the Lois Winter Singers. Titles include "Once In A While", "Stardust", "There Goes My Heart", "If I Had You", and "Somewhere Along The Way". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has light wear, some aging, some splitting in the top seam, and a center split in the bottom seam.)

✨✧ Eugene McDanielsOutlaw ... CD
Atlantic/Water, 1970. Used ... $9.99
An incredible step forward for 60s soul singer Gene McDaniels – so much so, that most folks hearing this album can't believe he's the same guy who recorded for Liberty Records a few years before! The album's incredibly righteous right from the start – and has a genre-busting quality that isn't quite soul, but isn't rock or anything else either – and instead, the kind of progressive, "years ahead of its time" sort of set that guys like David Axelrod were cutting in the same stretch. Apart from the title, the whole record's got a strong political message that's probably best embodied in the statement on the back – "Under conditions of national emergency, like now, there are only two kinds of people – those who work for freedom, and those who do not – the good guys vs the bad guys". With words like that, you can definitely bet that Eugene is on the side of the good guys – really pushing a social agenda with some wonderfully-penned tunes on the album – set to cool musical backdrops from the equally-righteous William S Fischer. Titles include "Love Letter To America", "Black Boy", "Outlaw", and "Sagittarius Red". CD

✨✧ Timi YuroAmazing Timi Yuro – The Mercury Years ... CD
Mercury (UK), Mid 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing is right – as Timi Yuro's one of the most soulful voices of the 60s, but a singer who's often overlooked because her work fell into a unique space between jazz and soul! The CD offers a much-needed look at Timi's mid-60s years on the Mercury label – a key point of maturity, and work done after Timi's initial and better-known sides for Liberty. The style here takes the depth of Dinah Washington on Mercury and infuses it with styles that are a bit lusher, and more in the increasingly sophisticated mode of other 60s vocalists – supported by Quincy Jones production and some great backings from the legendary Bobby Scott. 24 tracks in all are featured – including the full Amazing Timi Yuro album, plus rare singles, and even a few Italian numbers! Tracks include "I Love My Man", "Johnny", "If", "All I Need Is You", "I'm Still Around", "There Must Be A Way", "Why Not Now", "Can't Stop Running Away", "Get Out Of My Life", "Could This Be Magic", "My Foolish Heart", "Cuttin In", "Ti Credo", and "E Poi Verra L'Autunno". Anthony and crew were one of the few groups who actually got better when they moved from the raw indie scene to the slicker major label one – as you'll hear perfectly on this set of some of their best work for the Veep/DCP/United Artists label. Teddy Randazzo handled all the arrangments and production, and his breathy uptown style works perfectly with the band's soulful harmonies. Titles include "Hurt So Bad", "I'm On The Outside (Looking In)", "Our Song", "Get Out Of My Life", and "Going Out Of My Head". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ritchie FamilyLife Is Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Soaring disco vocals from the Ritchie Family – a trio who get plenty of great clubby help here from Richie Rome and Jacques Morali, both of whom ensure that the whole thing is a super-charged powerhouse of late 70s disco elements! The strings glide in nicely next to the vocals, and the rhythms are live and played with a nice intensity – maybe more New York than the usual TK Records release of the time, but that's probably Morali's work on the set! The trio vocals follow in the tradition started for 70s disco by Three Degrees – and titles include "Life Is Music", "Lady Luck", "Super Lover", "Disco Blues", "Liberty", and "Long Distance Romance". CD features bonus tracks – "Life Is Music (7" mix)", and "Lady Luck (12" mix)". CD

✨✧ AmnestyFree Your Mind – The 700 West Sessions ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rare funk from the Indy scene of the early 70s – the long-overdue release of material recorded by a really hard-jamming, horn-heavy combo! Amnesty have a sound that's awash in the best large group influences of the time – a bit of Earth Wind & Fire, a bit of Parliament/Funkadelic, but also a grittier, more guitar-based groove at times too – one that rumbles heavily at the bottom of the rhythms, with a sound that's like Norman Whitfield-era Motown, taken to much greater extremes! There's actually a lot more Detroit going on in the work than Indy – but the horns also have a jazzier, more open-ended quality too – not just parts penned for simple funky rhythms, but ones that show some influence from the more righteous side of the jazz spectrum. The material was all recorded on two dates in 1973 – but only issued here for the first time – and together, the tracks are a great example of a hip group from the underground, really letting loose with a great sense of freedom. There's some vocals on the record, but almost more of a focus on the instrumentation overall – and titles include "Can I Help You", "Love Fades", "Trouble Will Remain", "We've Come A Long Way", "Liberty", "Mister President", "Free Your Mind", "We Have Love", and "Lord Help Me".
