✨✧ Delta 5Singles & Sessions 1979 to 1981 (light blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Rough Trade/Kill Rock Stars, Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
Fantastic work from Delta 5 – one of our favorite groups from the UK post-punk years, and a group whose funky, dubby approach to punk rivals the best work by groups like The Slits or Gang Of Four! Like both groups, they have smart songs with interesting lyrics – but focused down right into the groove, with lots of heavy interplay between bass and guitar – captured with a razor-sharp sound, and that inherent sense of darkness we love in so many productions from the time! Female singer Ros Allen is in the lead, really belting out the tunes with a great sort of edge – and the set includes the group's three rare singles on Rough Trade, plus BBC sessions and live material – making for an overdue full length collection from these years. Titles include their classic "Mind Your Own Business" – plus "Now That You've Gone", "Try", "Colour", "Make Up", "Triangle", "Innocenti", "Train Song", "Anticipation", "Final Scene", "Shadow", "Circuit", and "Journey". ✨✧ Sam PrekopSam Prekop ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1999. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful little record from this longtime stalwart of the Chicago scene. Sam started out in Shrimpboat, gained great fame in Sea & Cake, and here delivers his most wonderful performance to date – a beautiful set of jazzy pop tracks, with backing by Josh Abrams, Archer Prewitt, Jim O'Rourke, and the great drummer Chad Taylor. The tracks bristle with a lovely sense of energy, and they have a sophistication that's wonderful – matched with a lyricism that keeps them always sounding fresh. Sam's turned into a wonderful vocalist, too – and we're betting you won't be able to take this one off the turntable once you get started. Titles include "The Shadow", "Don't Bother", "The Company", and "Faces & People". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bob DesperNew Sounds ... LP
Fata Morgana (Italy), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully moody little record from the Portland scene of the 70s – a set that was originally issued on a Christian label, and pressed in a very small quantity – but which has an underground acoustic vibe that's right up there with some of the most striking UK work at the end of the 60s! Bob Desper plays acoustic guitar, but in a mode that's far from familiar folk – really using the instrument to shade in his dark-tinged lyrics on the tunes – songs of sadness, solitude, and loss – material that would have been timeless, had Desper got the chance to record for a bigger label at the time! Titles include "Darkness Is Like A Shadow", "It's Too Late", "Lonely Man", "Let It Shine For You", "Liberty", "Time Is Almost Over", and "To A Friend Of Mine". ✨✧ Sonic YouthEVOL (with bonus download) ... LP
Goofin', 1986. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
For many folks, this is the first truly great album from Sonic Youth – the first in which the group found any kind of a groove at all! Sonic Youth had been sputtering around the New York art punk scene since the early 80s, but things didn't really come together until this work of aggressively fractured genius hit the streets in '86. New drummer Steve Shelley's arrival brought a solid backdrop to Thurston Moore's and Lee Renaldo's "Sister Ray" worshipping electric squall, and it made a world of difference. The standout is "Expressway To Yr Skull", one of the great underground rock songs of the 80s – one that had the group working what could almost be called a melodic style, albeit one filled with noisy clatter. Arguably the point where Sonic Youth stopped started making some of the most interesting and rewarding indie rock of all time! Other tracks include "Tom Violence", "Shadow Of A Doubt", "Star Power", "Green Light", and "Bubblegum". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousEarl's Closet – The Lost Archive Of Earl McGrath 1970 to 1980 (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Light In The Attic, 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Earl McGrath looks pretty darn cool on the cover, and from all reports he was a pretty darn cool guy in the 70s too – head of Rolling Stones Records, and friend and confidant to some very hip folks in the music industry! After Earl passed, a closet full of unreleased tapes was discovered at his home – really wonderful material by artists big and small, brought together here in a treasure trove of tracks that give us a whole different look at the 70s! Given the obscurity, most titles are demo recordings with lean instrumentation – but that quality makes the work by big stars even more interesting, and really delivers the best work of the special singer/songwriters that McGrath would always champion. Titles include "Cocaine Cowboy" and "Gonna California" by Terry Allen, "California" by Mark Rodney, "Baby Come Closer" and "Dry In The Sun" by Hall & Oates, "Funky But Chic" by David Johansen, "Tension" by Jim Carroll, "Oh La La" by Shadow, "Christopher" by Michael McCarty, "Holy Commotion" by Paul Potash, "Sail Away" by Jabor, "Invisible Lady" by Johnny Angel, "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" by Blood Brothers Six, and "Salt Showers" by Len & Betsy Green. ✨✧ Tubeway Army (Gary Numan)Tubeway Army (marbled blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beggars Banquet, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The genius first album from Gary Numan and Tubeway Army – a set that stripped down all sorts of influences from the early part of the 70s, filtered them through a punkish sort of energy, and came up with a great antidote to some of the more overblown projects from years before! There's plenty to love here if you love Bowie in Berlin, or the offbeat spirit of Roxy Music – yet the record's far more than just a second chapter to that generation – as Numan and the group have a way of sounding colder and more sinister, and really helping give birth to a spirit that so many others would steal in years to come! If you only know Numan's later solo work, you'll be nicely surprised here by the sharper edge and sometimes heavier guitar – an instrument played along with keyboards by Numan, with help from Jess Lidyard on drums and Paul Gardiner on bass. Numan produced the whole thing himself, with further genius energy in the studio – and titles include "Are You Real", "Listen To The Sirens", "Everyday I Die", "The Life Machine", "Shadow In Vain", "Jo The Water", and "The Dream Police". VariousNuggets – Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965 to 1968 (psychedelic vinyl pressing) ... LP
Elektra/Rhino, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $36.99 39.99
One of those few classic cases where a compilation of tracks was maybe even more influential than the original music itself – as this early 70s collection of 60s material turned out to shape and influence generations for decades to come! Guitar genius Lenny Kaye put the set together famously for Elektra Records in 1972 – as a reminder that, just a few years before, there were some amazing sounds that were not only brewing up in local indie scenes around the country, but also on the radio as well – even though most of those groups had been pushed into relative obscurity by the rise of soft rock, hard rock, and classic rock of the early 70s! The package is a return to the pre-prog years, with an especially strong ear for garage-tuned tracks that would go on to shape later punk, 80s indie, and lots more underground sounds in the future. Titles include "I Had Too Much To Dream (Last Night)" by Electric Prunes, "Dirty Water" by the Standells, "Respect" by Vagrants, "No Time Like The Right Time" by Blues Project, "Invitation To Cry" by Magicians, "You're Gonna Miss Me" by Thirteenth Floor Elevators, "Psychotic Reaction" by Count Five, "Baby Please Don't Go" by Amboy Dukes, "My World Fell Down" by Sagittarius, "Open My Eyes" by Nazz, "It's A Happening" by The Magic Mushrooms, "Lies" by The Knickerbockers, "Oh Yeah" by Shadows Of Knight, "Sit Down I Think I Love You" by The Mojo Men, "Just Like Romeo & Juliet" by Michael & The Messengers, "Hey Joe" by The Leaves, and "Farmer John" by The Premiers. ✨✧ EuclidHeavy Equipment ... LP
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very different album than most of the other records issued on the Flying Dutchman label at the start of the 70s – not funk, or jazz, or soul material – and instead a stunning hard rock monster that's every bit as revolutionary as titles in those other genres on the label! The group are definitely working with some heavy equipment here – fierce drums, fuzzy guitar, monstrous basslines – all wrapped together at a level that's got some echoes of the new UK hard rock scene, but also maybe some of the slight fuzzier touches around the edges from some of the US underground groups recording for Mainstream. Titles include "97 Days", "Lazy Livin", "Bye Bye Baby", "Shadows Of Life", "She's Gone", "First Time Last Time", and a pretty freaky cover of "Gimme Some Lovin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousWe Are The Children Of The Setting Sun – Compiled By Paul Hillery (3LP set) ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 3LPs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really fantastic collection – one that seems to find a special place that's all its own – a bit folk funk, a bit jazzy soul, a bit something else that we can't define at all – all sewn together through a wonderfully well-chosen batch of cuts that we might never have heard otherwise! Paul Hillery uses words next to each of the titles to describe the tunes, ala an older sound library record – like "canyon cool", or "susurrations of the sea", "ethno-fusion", "swelling cellos", and so on – all light ways of getting at the vibe of the album's beautiful mix of laidback vocals and easygoing instrumentation – definitely music that's perfect for spending some time with the setting sun! Titles include "Fields Of Green" by Carm Mascarenhas, "Colorado Red Sky" by MCF, "Mojafe" by Hardin & Russell, "Be With Me" by Pat Rahming, "Wet Dreams" by Floyd Hunchback Group, "Surfer Girl" by Persona La Ave, "In Passing" by Kimberle, "Over & Over" by Andy Davis, "Playin Your Game" by Blaine L Reininger, "The Shadows Dance" by Graeme Gash, "It All Comes Around" by Parker MacDonnell, and "The Light" by Reggio. ✨✧ Joni MitchellHissing Of Summer Lawns (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Asylum/Rhino, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A further step forward in the career of Joni Mitchell – a record that not only continues the jazzier currents she explored in the 70s, but also brings in a whole bunch of different modes as well – so much so, it's almost as if Joni's daring anyone to still call her a folk singer with the album! The themes are wonderfully sophisticated, as is the songwriting – the king of material that would keep Mitchell strong for decades, while so many of her contemporaries faltered – as you'll hear on the tracks "In France They Kiss On Main Street", "Sweet Bird", "Shadows & Light", "The Boho Dance", "Don't Interrupt The Sorrow", "The Jungle Line", and "Edith & The Kingpin". ✨✧ Human ExpressionLove At a Psychedelic Velocity ... LP
Mississippi, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredible work from Human Expression – a group with this moody, dark quality that's completely mindblowing, especially given their young years at the time of these recordings! The music certainly falls into the garagey sounds of the Sunset Strip scene at the time – but there's also a quality here that really sets these guys apart – this stark, bracing vibe that's hinted at in some of the really bleak song titles of their tunes, and which comes through strongly in the mix of offbeat vocalizations, unusual guitar tunings, and really raw production throughout! Tracks include "Reading Your Will", "Love At Psychedelic Velocity", "Every Night", "Cam Me Down", "Sweet Child Of Nothingness", "I Told Her", "Return Nevermore", "Judgement Of Rejection", "I Don't Need Nobody", "Room Of Shadows", "Who Is Burning", and "Outside Of It All". ✨✧ Cabaret VoltaireCrackdown (silver vinyl pressing – with download) ... LP
Mute, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Lots of layers of sound here – that raw electronic style of early Cabaret Voltaire, mixed with an increasing interest both in found sound samples, including some cool spoken bits – and in elements from a growing global soundscape as well! There's some unusual undercurrents to the music that almost reflect the Brian Eno/David Byrne experiments of the time – with elements that are much more exotic than before. And there's also occasional points that get a bit more tuneful – as if Mallinder or Kirk have finally decided they need a bit of vocals to hook folks into the music – although still at a level that's far from the electro pop of some of their contemporaries. Titles include "Over & Over", "Why Kill Time When You Can Kill Yourself", "Haiti", "Crackdownh", "Animation", and "In The Shadows". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Fabiano Do NascimentoDas Nuvens ... LP
Leaving, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fabiano Do Nascimento picks up his groove here, but just slightly – adding in some slight percussion and gentle rhythms to his fantastic work on 7 string and 10 string guitar! The record's got all the lightness and charms of his previous sets, but also maybe has just a slightly larger rhythmic pulse – sometimes through added guitar from Daniel Santiago, who also brings a bit of midi to the mix – yet never in a way that overshadows the acoustic guitar at the core! The blend is almost as if a bossa nova guitar style was filtered through a Durutti Column aesthetic, but without vocals – on titles that include "Train To Imagination", "Thrdwrdl", "Babel", "Eterno", "Stranger Nights", "Blu's Dram", "3 Pontas", and "Aurora".
