VariousReggae Flight 404/Man From Carolina (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CDs ... $15.99 24.99
Two rare compilations from Trojan Records – back to back in a single set, with an insane number of bonus tracks too! Both records capture that time when the groove was moving from rocksteady to early reggae – still yet to hit global fame, which makes for a really nice mix of music from an array of lesser-knowns who were getting circulation outside of Jamaica by Trojan. The set really digs deep, way past the bigger tracks and hits – and there's a fair bit of artists here who might be new to anyone but the more serious reggae collectors. Plenty of work here resonated strongly with the growing UK reggae market for reggae at the end of the 60s – and alongside soulful vocals, there's a nicely laidback groove on most numbers – never too overproduced, and filled with plenty of surprises along the way! The set features the full tracks from both records in the title, plus 31 bonus tracks – and most cuts are new to CD – a massive lineup of work from The Slickers, GG All Stars, Maytones, Keeling Backford, Lloyd & Robin, Gladstone & The Followers, Charlie Ace, Trevor & Keith, Vernon Buckley & Alvin Ranglin, and Eric Monty Morris. ✨✧ VariousStudio One Space Age – Dub Special ... CD
Studio One/Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rare work from one of the most obscure sides of the Studio One catalog – dub recordings that were issued in small press runs, usually with handmade covers, and which barely saw circulation outside of Jamaica at all! This is Studio one at its most experimental – following the new wave of creative activity on the Kingston scene in the 70s, and letting the Dub Specialist access older tracks from the Studio One catalog, break them down, and build up these spare dub tracks that really live up to the "space age" promise of the title! The whole thing is almost more of a Dub Specialist album overall, save for the fact that the core of the tracks is from material by a host of other artists – on titles that include "Tricky", "Disco Dub", "Still Water Version", "Marcus Dub", "Accra", "A Lie Gal A Tell", "Pick Up", "Red Neck", "Wailing Sounds", "Barb Wire Version", and "Juk's Inc". ✨✧ Prince BusterRoll On Charles Street ... CD
Rockashacka (Japan), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A stunning collection of rare productions from the legendary Prince Buster – and a set that features a fair bit of previously unreleased material! If you know Prince Buster at all, you'll know that he's a very special sort of talent – one who worked heavily during the ska years, but whose sounds and styles were always of a unique variety – sometimes with rough soul elements that almost pave the way for funk, sometimes with jazzier inflections that go back to earlier generations of Jamaican music – and always with this full-on studio style that's perfect on both vocal and instrumental tracks! This CD brings together 20 tracks in all, at least half of which are unreleased – and titles include "Pink Night" and "Hey Train" by Buster All Stars, "Roll On Charles Street" and "Almost Like Being In Love" by Roland Alphonso, "Raindrops Falling" by Derrick & Patsy, "Only Soul Can Tell" by Dakota Jim, "Prince Of Peace" by Buster All Stars, "Stop That Train" by Spanish Town Skabeats, "Raining Outside" by Raymond Harper, "Vietnam" and "Sudden Attack" by Don Drummond, and the tracks "Sunshine With My Girl", "I Won't Let You Cry", "I'm Sorry", "High Blood Pressure", "Rude Rude Rudie", and "Islam" by Prince Buster himself – plus "Stir The Pot" by Prince Buster with Derrick Morgan, Eric Morris, and Patsy.
