✨✧ Philippe BesombesCesi Est Cela (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Mio (Israel), 1970s. New Copy ... $8.99 12.99
A strange mix of sound library electronics and much more experimental work from Philippe Besombes – a set that carries echoes of some of the best Italian soundtrack electronics of the 70s, but which also features much darker, more turgid moments as well! The album collects some of Besombes' performances for ballet and other settings – and stands as an even starker document of his talents than some of the other albums issued under his name in the 70s. The core album is expanded here with 5 more bonus tracks that are almost noisier than the first – tunes that really hit the far reaches of analogue electronics, especially the low range of their sound. Titles include "Pawa 1", "Geant", "Princess Lolita", "Seul", "Ceci Est Cela", "L'Or Des Fous 4", "PJF 159", and "Traversee". (Rock, Out Sound) CD

Philippe BesombesPhilippe Besombes Anthology 1975 to 1979 (Libra/Esombeso/Hydravion/Stratos Airlines/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
Purple Pyramid, Late 1970s. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99 On May 24, 2024
A great package – one that features some wildly experimental work from French electronics whiz Philippe Besombes! First up is the album Libra – tripped out electronics meet progressive rock jamming – all in a weird and wonderful film score from the early 70s! The record's one of the best by French experimentalist Philippe Besombes from the time – and it's got a style that sort of starts in the territory of Francois De Roubaix similar electronic work for film – but gets a lot darker and noisier right away! There's a textural depth here that's really great – almost a pre-industrial music exploration of sounds – but the work's also not that over-indulgent, either – and Besombes always has a great way of getting back to a tune, especially on the shorter tracks. Titles include "La Plage", "Rugby", "Ceremonie", "Hache 06", "La Ville", "Les Cosmonautes", "Tis A Song", "Boogimmick", and "PJF 261". Next is the record Esombeso – also release as Ceci Est Cela – a strange mix of sound library electronics and much more experimental work from Philippe Besombes – a set that carries echoes of some of the best Italian soundtrack electronics of the 70s, but which also features much darker, more turgid moments as well! The album collects some of Besombes' performances for ballet and other settings – and stands as an even starker document of his talents than some of the other albums issued under his name in the 70s. Titles include "Pawa"," Geant", "Seul", and "Ceci Est Cela". Next are two more albums done under the name Hydravion – both of which show Besombes turning his electronics into tighter, more song-based territory – although not without some noise from time to time – shorter tracks that sometimes get a bit tuneful, but which are still light years from mainstream music of the period. CD set also features bonus tracks for the first two albums – 8 more numbers that include "L'Or Des Fous", "Traversee", "Trio", "Piano Prepare", "Orgue Hache", and "Chocolate Cream". ✨✧ Philippe Besombes & Jean-Louis RizetPole ... CD
Mio (Israel), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 12.99
Think the Germans had the market cornered on dark-edged electronics in the 70s? Guess again, because this mid 70s gem from Frenchman Philippe Besombes easily rivals the most progressive work of the Kraut scene of the time! The album's a collaboration with Jean-Louis Rizet – and features both artists duetting on a variety of analogue electronics – sometimes in a melodic way, but often in more experimental modes that are quite textural at times – and which stand as a key link between initial German electronics in the 70s, and some of the murkier British uses of the instrument a few years later. Titles include "Synthi Soit-Il", "Haute Pression", "Evelyse", "Armature Double", "Lundi Matin", and "Montelimar". (Rock, Out Sound) CD

Mats GustafssonHidros Nine Mirrors ... CD
Trost (Austria), 2024. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
A really amazing project from Mats Gustafsson – and one that's a great reminder of his ability to create music in so many different and incredible ways! This time around, Mats acts as the conductor – at the head of NyMusik Trondheim and Avant Art Ensemble – both larger groups who mix together acoustic instrumentation with electronics, but all in these very spare, often subtle ways that hardly make you aware of their size at all. There are moments of full-on sonic activity, but much of the proceedings focus on smaller sounds and more focused expressions – served up with solo work from Anders Nyqvist on trumpets, Colin Stetson on amplified bass sax, Hedvig Mollestad on tuba, Jerome Noetinger on revox tape machines, and Dieb 13 on turntables – next to other work on cello, violin, prepared piano, accordion, and guitar. Titles include "Mirrors 1", "Echoes 1", "Shadows 2", "Outro", "Intro", and "Reflection". (Jazz, Out Sound) CD

✨✧ Pierre HenryPolyphonies (12CD set) ... CD
Universal (France), 1950s/1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy 12CD set ... $36.99 83.99
Life-changing music from Pierre Henry – one of the key French electronic music composers of the 20th Century – and an artist who went on to have a big impact in the 21st Century as well! This set mixes together key Henry compositions with nine never-released works – all remastered by Henry in his own famous studio – where he took up most of his later-life creative activity, after an initial association with the famous RTF Studio in Paris! The sounds here are incredible – truly an illustration of the genius of the man who once said "it is necessary to destroy music" – a thesis that Pierre expounds on more fully in the notes within. The package features a total of 29 works in all, presented on 12 CDs with a big booklet of notes – and works include "Chroniques Terriennes" (2016), "Etudes Transcendantes Pour Un Piano Imaginaire" (2015), "Grande Toccata" (2006), "Gymkhana" (1970), "Pleins Jeux" (2008), "Kyldex" (1973), "Une Tour De Babel" (1988), "La Reine Verte", "Rock Electronique" (1963), "Histoire Naturelle" (1997), "Facies" (1960), "Le Livre Des Morts Egyptien" (1988), "Fragments Pour Artaud" (1970), "La Noire A Soixante" (1961), "Deuxieme Symphonie" (1972), "Spatiodynamisme" (1953), and "Concerto Des Ambiguites" (1950). IasosCelestial Soul Portrait ... CD
Numero, 1970s. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Spacey sounds from the enigmatic Iasos – a legendary figure in the 70s underground – and an artist with a heck of a great ear for organic electronics and unusual recording techniques! This cool collection of Iasos' music was put together by Carlos Nino with the guys at Numero – and as such, it's got a really sensitive feel – a way of bringing together the sounds and stories that really get at the subtle genius of Iasos – packaged in a lavish set that also features lots of vintage photos too. The style is often quite personal, and almost naive – as Iasos works on guitar, keyboards, amplified flute, and other odd tape and studio effects – all flowing out with a style that's often a bit cosmic, and pretty darn compelling. Titles include "Crystal Petals", "Procession On The Horizon", "Cloud Prayer", "Rainbow Canyon", "I Passion You A Leap Of Love Flame", and "Spring Temple Forest". (New Age, Out Sound) CD

Paul Lytton & Erhard HirtBorne On A Whim – Duets 1981 ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1981. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
A set of free improvised duets that are so fierce, they've been kept from the public for decades – finally seeing the light of day in this long-overdue package! Percussionist/electronicist Paul Lytton is a player known to many, and known for his always-incredible ear for sonic intensity – yet we've maybe never heard him this intense before, working alongside guitarist Erhard Hirt, a player with an approach to his instrument that's unlike anyone else in the free jazz universe at the time! Hirt often plays with a great sense of noise – not as bombastically as Sonny Sharrock, or as rock-influenced as some of the others – but almost as if he's using his electric guitar as the gateway to some darker universe, opening a passage that Lytton dives in to follow very quickly with some especially great electronics. Even the percussion has this electrified spark – and titles include "Orbod", "The Sensitive Stickler", "Don't Wait Too Long", "Deder", "Clip", and "175". (Jazz, Out Sound) CD

✨✧ Pierre Schaeffer, Pierre Henry, & OthersMusique Concrete 1956 to 1962 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 29.99
The birth of a key moment in avant garde music – served up here in a series of recordings that are nicely different than some of the other musique concrete material on the market! The package brings together some early "panorama" presentations of the work – two from the Club D'Essai program on French TV, with crucial work from Pierre Henry and Pierre Schaeffer, working in that blend of acoustic instruments with electronic results that seemed to grace so much of these early experiments! There's also contributions from Philippe Arthuys on one of the programs – and the set then moves onto CD2, which has even more variety in the music. The first section of CD2 features selections from a 1959 showcase of musique concrete by the Groupe De Recherces Musicales – with work by Iannis Xenakis, Henri Sauget, Luc Ferrari, Michel Philippot, and Schaeffer. The second part of that CD features the soundtrack to the film Malefices D'Henri Decoin by Pierre Henry – a selection of very cool songs! CD

La Monte Young/Marian Zazeela31 VII 69 10:26 to 10:49 PM/23 VIII 64 2:50:45 to 3:11 AM – The Volga Delta ... CD
Edition X/Superior Viaduct, 1969. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of the most haunting music we've ever heard from spiritual minimalist La Monte Young – a set that was issued on his own small label at the end of the 60s, as a series of duets with his wife, Marian Zazeela – who's a heck of a creative force on the album! The set's got plenty of the longspun passages we love in Young's music – but with much more of a focus on trance-like vocals, handled by both Young and Zazeela, as they deliver these sonorous chant-like passages that build slowly alongside electronics – going in and out of phase like some of the best minimal experiments of the time, but with a much earther, personal sort of approach. CD
Also available 31 VII 69 10:26 to 10:49 PM/23 VIII 64 2:50:45 to 3:11 AM – The Volga Delta (with bonus download) ... LP 25.99

✨✧ Ruth WhiteFlowers Of Evil ... CD
Limelight/Rhythm Productions, 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really cool blend of voice and electronics – years ahead of its time, and with a vibe that maybe prefaces some of the European industrial work to come at the end of the 70s! Ruth White is well known for her electronic experimentation – right up there with the work of Pierre Henry at the same time – but for this release, she also adds a bit of her own voice too – readings of words from the poems of Charles Baudelaire, but processed in ways that really emphasize some of the darkness in the lines in a really great way! White does all sorts of cool things with her voice, in ways that are again years ahead of their time – and titles include "Owls", "The Cat", "Spleen", and "The Litanies Of Satan". CD

✨✧ VariousIn Fractured Silence ... CD
United Dairies/Souffle Continu (France), 1984. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary bit of noise from the United Dairies label of Stephen Stapleton – a set that combines his own experimental sounds with some contributions from the avant French scene as well – all at a level that shows how that sometimes-overlooked 70s generation ended up having a bit impact on 80s pioneers like Stapleton! Much of the music here is without easy description – not the rawer industrial of some of Stapleton's Nurse With Wound projects, or free jazz, or analog electronics – but a hybrid of so many earlier experiments served up in very personal representations of musical frontiers! The set features four long tracks – "Anatomy Of Aphrodite" by Sema, "Frissons Dans La Cochlee" by Helene Sage, "Tunnel Sous La Manche/Under The Channel" by Un Drame Musical Instante, and "The Strange Play Of The Mouth" by Nurse With Wound. (Rock, Out Sound) CD
