Arnold Dreyblatt & The Orchestra Of Excited StringsResolve ... LP
Drag City, 2023. New Copy ... $19.99 21.99
Really great work from Arnold Dreyblatt – a set that's almost a distillation of his excited strings material from many years back, taken into rock minimalism territory that almost seems to tie it to early projects from composer Glenn Branca too! The strings here are all electric – Arnold on excited strings bass, next to two live guitars, and one computer-controlled guitar – all moving in these modal rhythms that build nicely, with some slight phase shifts and inflections – but also enough punch at the core with some drums, so that the tunes almost seem to have more rock appeal than some of Dreyblatt's other material. Titles include the very long "Auditoria", plus the cuts "Shuffle Effect", "Container", and "Flight Path". LP, Vinyl record album

The music is extremely subtle, and features 18 musicians playing a variety of violins, cellos, clarinets, pianos, marimbas, and vibes – all in short cyclic passages that move in and out in ways that perfectly illustrate Reich's fascination with phase progressions in modern music. ✨✧ Terry RileyIn C (remastered edition) ... CD
Columbia, 1968. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An early masterpiece from the young Terry Riley – a work that's a bit different than some of his more solo or small group outings – but one that really sets the stage for all of Riley's experiments in years to come! The premise here is very unusual – in that the "score" features 53 separate short musical passages – which are then to be played in an order defined by the musicians themselves, in shifting patterns of repetition, moving in and out of phase with a really otherworldly quality – ever shifting, turning, and drifting – all to create a remarkable tapestry of sound, texture, and melody. This recording of the work is still the best, and it was produced with excellent care by David Behrman – and features musicians who include Jon Hassell on trumpet, Edward Burnham on vibes, Jan Williams on marimbaphone, David Shostac on flute, and Margaret Hassell on "The Pulse". ✨✧ Steve ReichDrumming ... CD
Nonesuch/Elektra (Germany), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great recording of Steve Reich's seminal composition "Drumming" – an amazing blend of minimal percussion snatches, coming together to form a lyrical repetitive work of great beauty! Reich heads up the recording himself – working here with 9 percussionists, 2 vocalists, a piccolo, and even a bit of whistling – all to create an extremely haunting sound that's still one of the best illustrations of minimalist at its height! The sound is incredible – a slow-shifting phase of sound from the percussion players – first conceived by Reich right around the time he was moving to work on keyboards from his tape projects – but, as a percussive performance, far more difficult to handle – especially given the extended time of the piece. ✨✧ Kristen RoosUniversal Synthesizer Interface Vol 1 ... LP
We Are Busy Bodies (Canada), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Spare, minimal sounds served up on a contemporary recording – but one that's inspired by early Midi references from the 80s – which are used here to set the pacing, but warmed up a lot more than they might have sounded back in the day! The music has a rhythmic, almost organic pulse – as if Terry Riley were composing on a Commodore 64, yet already was able to unlock all these tones and elements that none of the 80s musicians handling the instrument were able to touch – informed more by the sounds of acoustic instruments and their possibilities, then woven through digital progressions – all with a sound that's a bit like some of the Sky Records material by Cluster and Eno too. Titles on this first volume include "Diablo 6", "Aex", "Masterdrum", "Interactive Phase", "Diablo DX7", and "Midi Draw". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve ReichDrumming ... CD
Deutsche Grammophon (Germany), 1974. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Landmark music from Steve Reich – a set that takes his previous experiments in minimalism and phase shifting, and moves them into a highly percussive mode! The rhythms here become melodies – the sorts that you'd hear on other Reich keyboard albums, but played live with incredible dexterity – as each player puts together their passage in ways that interlocks with the other – than slowly moves in space over time – and letting in marimba, voice, piccolo, and glockenspiel to the mix as well. The shift over time is amazing – something that so many others have copied over the years, but never done this well again! CD

✨✧ Steve Reich/Terry RileySix Pianos/Keyboard Study #1 ... CD
Film (Germany), 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic recording of two minimalist classics – each done here in an unique sort of way! The reading of Steve Reich's "Six Pianos" features six different artists on the instrument – but each recorded by themselves, away from the others, using their own piano – which is quite different from any sort of unified group recording of the work! The differing spaces and types of instrument maybe makes for more of a sense of individual "voice" to the performance than some others – yet the whole work still adhere's brilliantly to Reich's compositional ideas – especially his idea of phase shift over time! And on that note, the version of Terry Riley's "Keyboard Study #1" is wonderful too – featuring acoustic piano from Gregor Schwellenbach (who produced the record) – plus delays imposed on the performance by Lukas Vogel, whose almost working a Steve Reich tape trick into the more organic compositional ideals of Riley!
