NnekaConcrete Jungle ... CD
Decon, 2010. Used ... $3.99
Hip hop soul from Nneka – a fresh perspective given her diverse background, and a fresh sound, too – rolling from rhymes to soulful singing over gritty soul beats and live band instrumentation. The facts of Nneka's life, born in Nigeria and raised in Germany – are bound be the lead of most intro bio and reviews, and it's a interesting stuff that should be noted – but we're just as impressed with her ability to mix rhymes and singing so deftly. She's a natural for both, and Concrete Jungle is well worth the trip. Titles include "Showin' Love", "The Uncomfortable Truth", "Mind Vs Heart", "Heartbeat", "Come With me", "Africans", "Suffri", "Fro Africa 2 U", "Walking", "Focus", "God Of Mercy" and more. CD
(Digipak case has some wear.)

✨✧ JhelisaGalactica Rush ... CD
Dorado (UK), 1993. Used ... Out Of Stock
A classic album of jazzy diva soul, and one that put the Dorado label on the map. In spite of the record's age, we still get loads of requests for this one – and for good reason! The production's got that fresh, early '90's UK vibe, with a good mix of classic influences, and freshly crafted indie soul grooves – all topped off by Jhelisa's heavy heavy vocals. Titles include "Baby God", "Secret Place", "Hold My Peace", "There's Nothing Wrong", and "Friendly Pressure". CD

✨✧ SolangeSol-Angel & The Hadley St Dream ... CD
Music World/Geffen, 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest modern soul albums of the late 00s – Solange's soulful and quite creative Sol-Angel & The Hadley St Dream LP – with classic 70s soul spirit inflected numbers that still feel very much of the present day – this is a record that really should have took off in a major way! Titles include "God Given Name", "TONY", "Dancing In The Dark", "Soundcastle Disco", "Ode To Marvin", "This Bird", "Valentine's Day" and more CD

✨✧ Lizz WrightFellowship ... CD
Verve, 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really righteous batch of tunes from Lizz Wright – in a set that may well be her most soulful to date! The material here comes from a host of different sources – some original tunes, spiritual tracks, some Angelique Kidjo songs, a few rockers, and even the great title cut – penned by Meshell N'Degeocello – all set to music that's nice and rootsy, with a good dose of organ and Fender Rhodes in the instrumentation, and topped by Wright's very spirited vocals! Titles include "Fellowship", "God Specializes", "Oya", "Amazing Grace", "Feed The Light", "In From The Storm", "All The Seeds", "Sweeping Through The City", and "I Remember I Believe". CD

✨✧ MelonyxSoul Glow ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A stunning debut album from Melonyx – the duo of Georgia Copeland and Nadia Latoya, a pair we're sure are going to really be adding a lot to the world of underground soul in years to come! There's a criss-crossing of modes here that takes the sounds past that of some of their contemporary – maybe a deeper London current of cultural influences, so that soul, hip hop, and reggae elements resonate equally at many points on the record – with a crisp, cosmic quality at times that also reflects some of the more adventurous 21st Century underground soul of the US. Yet the pair are very much their own thing – and not just in the way their vocals intertwine – as you'll hear on titles that include "Melanin Queens", "Black Elixir", "Ujjayi", "Keep Stepping", "Made To Suffer", "Light Em Up", "God Is", "Soul Glow", and "Butterfly". ✨✧ Meshell NdegeocelloPeace Beyond Passion ... CD
Maverick/Reprise, 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
A 90s classic from Meshell Ndegeocello – and one of the key records in showcasing how much new soul energy was beginning to brew up in the decade! The set forges an instant bridge between contemporary modes and the 70s – but all in a way that's freshly forward, not retro sleepy – as Meshell bursts forth with this voice that sets a whole new standard for female soul, and one that doesn't need to reference Aretha or Chaka, nor pretend it was raised on hip hop either! There's a power to the record that just gets stronger with each fresh listen – as you'll hear on titles that include "God Shiva", "Stay", "Bittersweet", "The Womb", "The Way", "Leviticus Faggot", "Deuteronomy Niggerman", "Ecclesiastes Free My Heart", "God Shiva", and her great cover of "Who Is He & What Is He To You".
