Wilbur Niles & Thrust (McNeal & Niles) —
Thrust Too ... LP Tinker Too/We Are Busy Bodies (UK), 1980. New Copy ...
$20.9929.99
A killer second album from the McNeal & Niles duo who gave us the legendary Thrust album – a record that's a lot less-known than that underground classic, and which almost has the group soaring in an even more fully-formed mode overall! There's definitely plenty of Ohio funk elements in the mix here – that special legacy the late 70s scene picked up from the influence of George Clinton and his P-Funk empire – but tuned towards some jazzier modes at times, especially given that the record has all this nice work on tenor from Bob Fried! The set's still got all the great keyboard work of before, but also adds in some wickedly sharp basslines, and even some occasional vocals one one track – the mighty "Survival Of The Fittest", next to other cuts that include "Electric Earth", "Parrot City", "Hang Ten", "First Time Home", and "Sevens Up". (Soul, Jazz)LP, Vinyl record album
A solo piano performance recorded live at Pit Inn – titles include "Mt. Senba", "Hamp's Blues", "Jamaican Parrot – Little Question", "My Funny Valentine", and Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing". CD

Allen Lowe & The Constant Sorrow Orchestra —
In The Dark (3CD set) ... CD ESP, 2023. New Copy 3CD ...
Out Of Stock
A surprisingly redemptive set of work – given that it's inspired by a time in the life of tenorist Allen Lowe when he was hardly able to sleep at all! The massive 3CD package works as this beautiful suite of tracks united by unexpected twists and turns along the way – very much woven together through complicated reed lines by players who include Lowe on tenor, Aaron Johnson on alto and clarinet, Ken Peplowski on clarinet, and Lisa Parrott on baritone – balanced by work from Kellin Hannas on trumpet and Brian Simontacchi on trombone. The horns engage in a way that stretches back to late 50s modern, but with more avant soloing throughout. Titles include "Poem For Eric Dolphy", "In The Jungles", "Junkie Rumble", "Hiding From A Riff", "Out To Brunch", "What Are We Doing", and "Blues For Old Jews". CD
