At some level, it's clear that Tatum's the star of the session – as most tracks start out with that introspective and often complicated approach to the keys that marks his trio and solo work – but Webster always slides in just in time to keep the record from being a standard Tatum outing – blowing with a crisp tone that's beautifully recorded here, and hardly concerned at all with the presence of Red Callender on bass and Bill Douglass on drums – who are much lower in the mix. A mighty big party from tenor giant Arnett Cobb – a player who always blew strongly in other settings, but really hit his height on these albums for Prestige! The record is a perfect mix of Cobb's bluesy roots and a more sophisticated modern jazz setting – with support from a crack rhythm combo of Ray Bryant on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – plus the special addition of Ray Barretto on congas, who brings in this rolling kick that definitely opens things up to the party atmosphere in the title – even when things are mellow! Most numbers have a open, soulfully blowing feel – and titles include "Slow Poke", "Lonesome Road", "Party Time", and "Blues In the Closet". CD

A classic meeting between alto giant Lou Donaldson and Blue Note's crack Three Sounds combo – the great piano trio led by the mighty Gene Harris! The formula was one that Blue Note employed on a number of sessions from the time – and it makes a lot of sense, because the Three Sounds are a very tight rhythm group, just waiting for a strong soloist to front their rolling soulful grooves – in ways that really set sessions like this apart from their standard albums for the label. On this one, the Sounds give Lou a nice tight backing, and he repays the favor by laying down some very tight, very in-the-pocket solos with a good soul jazz groove. A great little album from Paquito D'Rivera – not nearly as gimmicky as you might expect from the title, and a soulful set that's right in line with some of his first few gems as a leader in the US many years back! There's definitely some tango quality to some of the tunes – but it's mostly just a bit of bandoneon used lightly in the instrumentation – leaving most of the work here to sparkle in that Havana-influenced blend of jazz and Latin roots that's always made D'Rivera's music so great. Paquito plays alto and clarinet, alongside trumpet and valve trombone from Diego Urcola, piano from Ed Simon and Alon Yavanai, bass from Oscar Stagnaro, and drums from Mark Walker. Hector Del Curto plays bandoneon on the record – and tracks include "Milonga 10", "What About That", "Pere", "Revirado", "Funk Tango", "Mariela's Dream", "Como Un Bolero", and "Giant Steps". CD

One of a trio of fantastic performances recorded by tenor giant Dexter Gordon at the Zurich Jazz Festival in 1975 – a set that has him blowing with all that late-life brilliance he brought to his best European recordings of the time! Yet also, possibly because of the festival setting, there's a sharpness here that's a bit different than some of Gordon's small club live dates of the period – this great sense of energy that comes through right away, and which also seems to come from the rest of the group too – a quartet lineup that includes Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums. Seminal work from British tenor giant Tubby Hayes – one of his greatest, and most ambitious albums ever! The album features Tubby at the head of a larger ensemble of jazz musicians, working through his own arrangements of jazz standards – re-worked and expanded in ways that practically turn them into completely different tunes. Players on the set include the cream of British jazz of the mid 60s – like Kenny Wheeler, Ronnie Ross, Ronnie Scott, and Gordon Beck – and Tubby plays vibes and flute in addition to tenor, working in an open-ended style that is tremendously evocative. The Joe Pass heard here is light years away from the guitar player who made a few gimmicky records a decade before – and this album has Joe coming across with a gentle, but sophisticated approach to his instrument that we never would have expected in the past! Rare work by Hammond organ giant Big John Patton – recorded in 1968, but never issued until 1995, and even then, only briefly! The record features Patton at his finest – stretching out from his basic soul jazz roots, into a more searching use of the organ that's undoubtedly influenced by Larry Young's work at the same time. The record features great work by Harold Alexander on flute and tenor, plus trumpet by Vincent McEwan, drums by George Brown, and added conga by Richard Landrum. The groove is somewhere between 60s soul jazz and modal – and the tracks are long, with that heavy Patton swing! McCoy Tyner certainly should have no trouble remembering John – given that Coltrane was once his old boss – but apart from that easy reference in the title, the set has plenty more to offer – and is easily one of the most dynamic Tyner trio sessions from the later years of his career! There's a simple, focused, and direct sort of energy going on here – a soaring sensibility that's carried along by all the best modal impulses that Tyner and Coltrane explored together back in the day – but which is expressed with a different sort of warmth and soul in this trio setting. The group features Avery Sharpe on bass and Aaron Scott on drums – and titles include versions of Coltrane's "India", "Giant Steps", "One & Four", "Up Gainst The Wall", and "The Wise One" – plus "Good Morning Heartache" and "In Walked Bud". The title says it all – as the record's a session of ballads recorded by modern tenor giant David S Ware – done in a mode that's filled with soul and imagination, and a sense of care that possibly makes the album one of Ware's greatest in many many years! The group here is a quartet of familiar players – Matthew Shipp on piano, William Parker on bass, and Guillermo Brown on drums – but Ware is clearly the star of the set, and rolls out quietly contemplative solos that are awash in earthy phrasing – sounding a bit like some of Archie Shepp's best recordings in a similar mode from the late 70s. And in case you worry that David's getting soft with these ballads, there's no fear of that – because his interpretation of the tunes is still free-thinking and complex – a record that can stand proudly next to the best of his older catalog. A triple-tenor powerhouse – as Doug Webb invites Walt Weiskopf and Joel Frahm in for the sessions – and things really begin to cook! The trio get this raw, spare accompaniment from Brian Charette on Hammond and Rudy Royston on drums – which leaves the tenors plenty of room to open up, stretch out, and really do their thing – coming together as unified voices on the heads, then breaking out into really well-crafted, well-defined individual solos. An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. We've got a long-standing love affair with the music of Gil Melle, and this CD's a perfect example of why we think he's so great! Groovewise, the record's a great one – one of the strongest in years from pianist Eric Reed – who works here in an open-ended live setting with Seamus Blake on tenor! The album's a great example of the way these Smoke Sessions records can really open up the right sort of artist – as Reed reminds us of his ability to soulfully swing and really get down to business – working here with Blake's tenor in these wide waves of sound on the groovers, then laying back into these complex lines in the more gentle passages – both aided nicely by the work of Ben Williams on bass and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. All tracks are nice and long – and really flow with the kind of magic that Eric brings to his performances in a club – and titles include "Powerful Paul Robeson", "Until The Last Cat Has Swung", "Ornate", "The Gentle Giant", "The Shade Of The Cedar Tree", "Una Mujer Elegante", and "Groovewise". A beautiful lost bit of British jazz, and probably one of the greatest records ever made by UK tenor giant Don Rendell! The group's a quintet, and believe it or not, a very young Graham Bond is featured on alto. Bond's got a very straight hard bop sound here, with none of the goofiness that marred his later Beat Group albums. Bond contributed the nice track "Bring Back The Burch", Rendell wrote the groovy "You Loomed Out Of Loch Ness", and the band does very nice readings of Duke Pearson's "Jeannine" and Miles Davis' "So What". A very nice edge to the whole session, and the kind of killer album UK jazz fans should not be without! CD

Late work by jazz drum giant Buddy Rich – captured in a surprisingly energetic, firey, and sometimes funky mode at Ronnie Scott's Club in 1980! Buddy really pulled off some bright, buoyant, funk influenced work in the 70s and this set finds him at the tail end of that groove – playing with a pretty big group that includes Ernie Vantrease on piano, Wayne Pedziwiatr on bass, Ando Fusco, Jack Leibowitz, Steave Marcus and Kenny Hitchcock on saxes, Bob Coassin on lead trumpet, Roger Homefield on lead trombone, and others. A wonderful step forward for drummer Max Roach – working here in very creative company with saxophonist Anthony Braxton! Although Roach could have easily rested on his laurels as a famous bop drummer – and have spent endless years touring on highly-paid revival/reunion tours – he was a true creative giant who never stopped expanding his talents, especially during the late 70s, when he was matching up with some of the greats of the avant garde. This album is a perfect example of that commitment to modernism, as Roach duets with Anthony Braxton on a set of 7 fantastic tracks that stand apart from individual work by either artist – more loose and open than earlier Roach work, but a bit more inside than some of Braxton's – with fresh results from both players that never fail to delight! Organist Don Patterson was one of the greatest things to happen to alto giant Sonny Stitt in the 60s – and this set features 2 of the pair's greatest albums together! Both Night Crawler and The Boss Men are spare affairs – with Patterson on alto, Stitt on sax, and drummer Billy James providing the only other accompaniment, as the players stretch out in lean long solos that show the best of their playing. There's a total of 14 tracks in all on the set – a mix of hard groovers and mellower cuts – and titles include "Night Crawler", "Star Eyes", "Diane", "What's New?", "Easy To Love", "Big C's Rock", "42639", and "Answering Service". Ken makes some poignant commentary about the state of contemporary improvised music in his notes, and more than stands behind his words on a variety of reeds alongside Raymond Strid's drums, Sten Standell's piano, David Stackenas' guitars and Kjell Nordeson's percussion. Most of the pieces are of shorter duration, allowing each player and Ken to approach the improvs from many different angles, always fresh, so there are about a half dozen of each duo. A bare-bones, no holds barred live set from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – and one of his strongest records in years! The album was recorded live in Tokyo at the end of the 90s – at a point when Alexander was really hitting his prime, but still had a real freshness in his tone too – and the group on the set is a very sympathetic one, with Harold Mabern soaring away on the keys of the piano, Joe Farnsworth snapping a groove on drums, and Nat Reeves filling the whole thing in with these beautiful round tones on bass. Alexander's tone and phrasing are amazing – every bit as powerful and majestic as any tenor greats of the 50s and 60s – and that's some pretty heady company! Seminal work from British tenor giant Tubby Hayes – one of his greatest, and most ambitious albums ever! The album features Tubby at the head of a larger ensemble of jazz musicians, working through his own arrangements of jazz standards – re-worked and expanded in ways that practically turn them into completely different tunes. Players on the set include the cream of British jazz of the mid 60s – like Kenny Wheeler, Ronnie Ross, Ronnie Scott, and Gordon Beck – and Tubby plays vibes and flute in addition to tenor, working in an open-ended style that is tremendously evocative. Titles include "Nutty", "Milestones", "Sonnymoon For Two", and "Night In Tunisia" – all done in very different versions than usual! The set also features Tubby's own "100% Proof" – a really great track in its own right! CD

A great set that brings together early material that trombone giant JJ Johnson cut for Blue Note as a leader – sides that already mark his approach to the instrument as one of the most distinct of the time, and which pave the way for all the greatness that Johnson would bring to jazz in years to come! JJ's got a way of blowing his horn here that's almost trumpet-like at time – tight and focused, and perfect for the young bop generation – as he's paired on these cuts with players who include Hank Mobley and Jimmy Heath on tenor, Clifford Brown on trumpet, and either Wynton Kelly, John Lewis, or Horace Silver on piano, depending on the volume. There's plenty of other great surprises too – including a bit of bass from Charles Mingus, on a few cuts that also feature congas from Sabu Martinez – plus drums from Kenny Clarke on all tracks too. A beautiful late chapter in the jazz journey of Rahsaan Roland Kirk – and an album of subtle genius that's really opened up to us over the years! The setting here isn't as "hit you over the head" as on some of Kirk's Atlantic Records – because at one level, the tunes are mostly straight, and free of gimmicks – yet also still manage to conjure up the warmth, spirit, and soul that Roland brought to his best work. There's a slightly electric vibe running through some of the tunes, thanks to keyboards from Hilton Ruiz – and the album also benefits from organ work by Trudy Pitts and guitar from Billy Butler – both of whom are wonderfully restrained, in a way that matches the subtlety of the entire conception of the set. Titles include "Theme For The Eulipions", which features a great recitation from Betty Neals, plus cool chorus vocals – and other titles include "Goodbye Porkpie Hat", "Giant Steps", "Loving You", and "I'll Be Seeing You". A really burning live set from tenor giant Big Jay McNeely – a rare chance to hear this 50s jukebox legend doing his thing in a spontaneous setting! The set features Jay's tight combo working before a very appreciative crowd – clearly a bunch of youngsters there to let loose and do their thing, while McNeely blows hard and soulfully on the tenor sax, and gets some great support from organist Fred Thompson and the rest of the group. The sound's surprisingly raw – especially given that the album was issued by Warner Brothers in the 60s (during a time when they were briefly pinching R&B players from the indie scene) – and the record is an essential partner to Big Jay's better-known earlier work on King!
