One of the hippest albums that John Lewis ever recorded – and a set that's noteworthy for the presence of two European modernists! Most of the record features Lewis in a wonderful group with trobmonist Albert Mangelsdorff – who gets plenty of space here to play in his stepping, stuttering style – one of the more angular approaches to trombone in the 60s, and a nice contrast to the piano of Lewis. The group shared by both features Karl Theodor Geier on bass and Silvije Glojarnic on drums – and titles include "Animal Dance", "Set Em Up", "Monday In Milan", and "Why Are You Blue". But possibly even better than these sides is the album's one track by the amazing Zagreb Jazz Quartet – a group that features Bosko Petrovic on vibes, in a style that's somewhat inspired by the MJQ, but a fair bit darker too! Maynard swings it surprisingly nicely – in his standard big band mode, but with a lot more of an edge than in later years, thanks no doubt to some of the strong players he had in his group! Maynard's solos still have that blaring quality that marks him as a dominant showman, but he also gives ample room to some of the other soloists, especially on the longer tracks. Vince Guaraldi's wonderful music for the first-ever cartoon to feature the Peanuts characters in animated form – a sublime batch of jazz instrumentals that forever changed the face of music in shows of this nature! Vince steps out with an amazing sound right from the start – even different than his previous jazz records from the San Francisco scene – with a more careful balance of swing and sadness, lyricism and soul – always played in a subtle, understated way that really makes the music come through with a lasting degree of power. Core sounds are from the trio of Guaraldi on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Colin Bailey on drums – and titles include key early versions of the "Charlie Brown Theme" and "Linus & Lucy" – plus "Oh Good Grief", Pebble Beach", "Schroeder", and "Blue Charlie Brown". A surprisingly great early album from Jan Hammer – the keyboardist who went onto do some pretty drecky albums in later years, but who still has a surprising amount of sensitivity at this point! The session's a bit of a concept outing – recorded by Hammer after work in Mahavishnu Orchestra, but done in a personal, almost intimate style that's quite different than the overblown affair you might expect. Many tunes simply feature solo piano contemplating the themes, plus additional keyboards and synthesizer as the album moves on – and a bit of additional percussion and violin. There's a lyrical beauty here we never expected in Hammer's work – and titles include "Oceans & Continents", "Fourth Day", "Darnkess/Earth In Search Of A Sun", and "The Animals". An excellent Japanese performance from the Modern Jazz Quartet – and a set that was issued in a bit of a lull during their 60s American years for Atlantic Records – which makes it even more important as a key part of their catalog at the time! The 1966 date has the combo in fine form – and almost stepping out with a bit of added soulfulness, in ways that echo some of the styles that Milt Jackson was exploring on his own at the time, and which seem to be brought back to the group! Milt's vibes are wonderful – ringing out with a great sense of pride and presence that may well go beyond earlier MJQ material – and titles include "Really True Blues", "The Cylinder", "Midsommer", "Animal Dance", "For Someone I Love", "Ralph's New Blues", "Pyramid", "Home", "Winter Tale", "Blues Milanese", and "Bag's Groove".
