Jimmy GiuffreMusic For People, Birds, Butterflies & Mosquitoes ... CD
Choice/Candid, 1972. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Overlooked 70s work from Jimmy Giuffre – a hip trio session that has all the free elements of his earlier recordings, but possibly an even greater focus on tone! Jimmy plays a range of reeds here – tenor, clarinet, and flute – and he works with bass and drum accompaniment, but often in a really gentle way that allows his own solo energy to dictate the tunes – coming out in space that's boldly soulful on the tenor, yet more fragile and intimate on the flute – kind of a cross between more expressive avant work and some of the more spiritual tones of the time. The tenor tunes are especially great – kind of opening a new chapter for Giuffre's career – and the group features Kiyoshi Tokunaga on bass and Randy Kaye on percussion. Titles include "The Bird", "Mosquito Dance", "The Chanting", "The Butterfly", "Dervish", "Phoenix", and "Night Dance". CD

✨✧ Pepper AdamsCritics' Choice – Pepper Adams ... CD
World Pacific/Mighty Quinn, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real lost treasure from Pacific Jazz – a rare late 50s west coast session from Pepper Adams, featuring the amazing baritonist in a group with Lee Katzman on trumpet, Jimmy Rowles on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Mel Lewis on drums! The sound is incredible – on a par with that rare few of Adams' other magnificent albums as a leader – modern, yet soulful, and with a fluid feel that makes it hard to believe that Pepper's working with a baritone sax. Adams' work is always top-shelf, but this album's an even further cut above – and its proof that Pepper was one of the strongest talents burning in jazz in the late 50s! Tracks are all longish, and feature some nice unusual numbers that include "Minor Mishap", "Blackout Blues", "High Step", "5021", and "Zec". CD also features the bonus track "Four Funky People". CD

SsslickThis Is Ssslick ... CD
Stage 3 Sound/Sonorama (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A cool little album from the Kansas City scene – a mix of jazz, soul, and vocals – played by a mixed group that includes organ, guitar, vibes, and percussion! The sound is swinging soul jazz, but with vocals out front at times – and the sound is nicely rough around the edges, hardly the commercial affair you might guess from a group with "slick" in their name! These guys are clearly well suited to handling a variety of crowds, as you can tell from the shifting moods of the record – but they've also got a good talent for cooking up some good soulful tunes of their own, like the bossa-inspired "People's Choice", the mellow steppin "Voodoo Village", or the soul jazz groover "Crisco" – which begins with a really great break! The whole thing's pretty nice, and there's a few tasty cuts that also feature scatting vocals going together with the guitar. Titles include "Somewhere Along The Way", "Teach Me Tonight", "Gypsy In My Soul", and "Next Time You See Me". (Soul, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Jeri SouthernJeri Southern Meets Johnny Smith ... LP
Roulette, 1958. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Jeri Southern can be a hell of a jazz singer when she wants – and that was definitely the case on this gem of a record – a laidback small combo setting with excellent guitar accompaniment from Johnny Smith! Smith's trademark tones really color the record in a great way – enriching the sound and offsetting some of the more understated vocals from Jeri – but in a way that also lets us really hear her phrasing, too. The setting is spare and simple – and the song choice is great, too – with shifts between standards and a few more obscure numbers that show Jeri working at a deeper range than we know from other records. Titles include "Robins & Roses", "Without A Warning", "Where Or When", "Two Sleepy People", "Isn't It Romantic", and "Until The Real Thing Comes Along". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Orange label pressing. Cover has light wear and minor seam splits.)

✨✧ Jimmy GiuffreTrain & The River ... CD
Candid (UK), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
The album's titled after an old Jimmy Giuffre song from the 50s, but the sound is very much in his best mode of the 70s – a much freer exploration of earlier ideas, still very rich in tone, but put together quite differently in terms of rhythm! The album's got Jimmy working in a trio with Kiyoshi Tokunaga on bass and Randy Kaye on drums – both players who make things swing, albeit in an offbeat way – so that Giuffre's work on reeds almost has a bit more melodic approach here – strong and soulful on numbers that have him using tenor, more carefully creative on flute or clarinet selections. Titles include "Tree People", "The Tide Is In", "River Chant", "Elephant", "Tibetan Sun", and "Celebration". CD

✨✧ Gil MelleGil's Guests ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1956/1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
We've got a long-standing love affair with the music of Gil Melle, and this CD's a perfect example of why we think he's so great! Melle was an enigmatic baritone player who recorded for Blue Note and Prestige in the 50's, and his recordings for both labels have a strange other-wordly quality that's very difficult to describe, and which sets him apart from any other practitioner of the instrument at the time. Far from the clunky sounds you might expect from such a giant instrument, Melle produces these amazingly light waves of sound, which are interpolated by the members of his quartet – guitarist Joe Cinderella, bassist Vinnie Burke, and drummer Ed Thigpen – in a tangled web of spooky delights. The group's augmented here by some famous guests that are perfect choices for Melle's sound – like Art Farmer, Hal McKusick, Julius Watkins, and Don Butterfield – and the CD's filled with great compositions like "Soudan", "Block Island", "Funk For Star People", "Herbie", "Tomorrow", and "Ghengis". Also includes 3 bonus tracks, for a total of 9 tracks in all! CD
