✨✧ Souljazz OrchestraFreedom No Go Die ... LP
Do Right (Canada), 2007. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
More Afro Funk than the soul jazz you might guess from the group's name – but that's OK with us, because the record's plenty darn great! Souljazz Orchestra are one of the best of the current wave of Afro combos to hail from Canada – and they manage to get an incredible full sound from a surprisingly small range of instruments – usually just 3 saxes, a trumpet, keyboards, and percussion – but played with a sense of power to earn them the "orchestra" in their name! There's a definite Fela influence going on here – grooves that move fast with very skittish rhythms – snaking out with great horn bits and keyboard lines. But the overall approach is a bit tighter too – much more focused at times, on slightly shorter tunes, about half of which are vocal numbers. The Latin-inflected "Little Habana" has the group breaking format a bit – and other tunes include "Mista President", "The Blind Leading The Blind", "Insurrection", and "Mojuba". 8 tracks in all! ✨✧ VariousCongo Funk – Sound Madness From The Shores Of The Mighty Congo River – Kinshasa/Brazzaville 1969 to 1982 ... LP
Analog Africa (Germany), Late 1960s/1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really incredible compilation, and one that's a great reminder of why we love the Analog Africa record label so much! Sure, there's been collections of Congolese music before – but this one's got that special something extra that Analog Africa can bring to play – an ear for just the right tracks that have enough funk and soul to open the ears of listeners who might not normally be digging deep into African music – yet will also pack plenty of punch to listeners who do! You can dive right into the collection and listen – the music will take you on a mighty great journey, even if you know nothing about the scene. But, in the best tradition of the label, there's also plenty of notes inside, should you want to learn more – as you're digging fantastic tunes that include "Mfuur Ma" by Groupe Minzolo Ya Zaire, "Tembe Na Tembe Ya Nini" by Orchestre Celi Bitshou, "Nganga" by Les Freres Soki, "Ngantsie Soul" by Les Bantous De La Capitale, "Fiancee Laya" by GO Malebo, "Sungu Lubuka" by Petelo Vicka Et Son Nzazi, and "MBT's Sound" by MBTs. ✨✧ OsibisaWelcome Home ... LP
Island, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Later material from Osibisa, who have lost some of their harder Afro-Funk edge, and are working here more as an ensemble funk outfit, with a sound that's similar to some of the bigger American groups of the time. Titles include "Do It (Like It Is)", "Uhuru", "Sunshine Day", "Chooboi", and "Right Now". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ WitchZango ... LP
Desert Daze, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A stunning return to form for Witch – aka We Intend To Caus Havoc – a legendary group from the Zambian scene of the 70s, and one whose presence in the studio is as great for music as it was a surprise to the rest of the world when it was first announced! Witch have gotten huge attention for their older records in recent years, thanks to some key reissues – but it's still a bit of a surprise to hear them back in action, and sounding as great as they do – refining some of the older elements in their music, and really making the best of more contemporary studio elements – yet never in a way that sounds as if they're throwing away their core or sounding too commercial. The balance is just right here – there's something new and fresh going on, which is also an extension of the sinister sound of the group's classics – served up on titles that include "Stop The Rot", "By The Time You Realize", "These Eyes Of Mine", "Malango", "Streets Of Lusaka", and "Avalanche Of Love". LP, Vinyl record album
