Think The Beatles only had an impact on rock and pop fans in the America of the 60s? A pretty interesting slice of Chicago in the mid 70s – featuring a host of acts that never made it at all! The concept of the album was a contest by radio station WKQX to showcase a host of original groups from Chicago – and out of 1900 tapes submitted, 11 different groups were chosen to record for the album. To our ears, the best act on the set are the funk group The New Earth Rhythm Band – who submitted the tasty ensemble number "Pork Butts" – an obscure bit of jazzy funk that's certainly worth the price of the record alone. Most of the other work is in the rock vein – both hard and soft – by artists that include Tetra, Vesuvious, Teaser, Street Kids, and Ashcraft. LP, Vinyl record album

A whole new genre of disco – served up by one of the biggest club collectors in the world! Dimitri's the man who's guided us through so many other great sets of rare disco tracks over the years – and this time around, he's launching new look at the form! Cocktail Disco is a unique variation that's often heavy on orchestrations, and which sometimes has echoes of older jazz, vocal, or Latin recordings – classic influences that simmer nicely through the mix – and help deepen the sound of the already-soulful late 70s style! A very mysterious compilation – so much so that none of the tracks are listed with artists names – which is maybe a testament to their obscurity, at least to our American ears! And while the title says "disco", the groove is different than the soaring strings and female vocals you'd hear at Studio 54 – as these tracks have an earthy groove that's often very heavy on percussion, with guitar work that echoes earlier Arabesk rock, mixed with other stringed instrumentation and occasional reed passages that give the whole thing a very cool sound! Nothing here is ever too commercial or overproduced – there's a very spontaneous, down to earth sound throughout – in an assortment of nine rare tracks from back in the day! The Japanese love of American jazz is no secret – and the music was spread widely there by American forces after WWII – but during the 70s, something really special happened, and the scene found a voice that was all its own – exploding with new energy to create sounds that were soulful, spiritual, and powerfully poetic! By the end of the 70s, Japanese fusion would get more global exposure – but most of the tracks here are acoustic, save for Fender Rhodes lines – and feature completely inventive, imaginative sounds – often set to grooves that are modal and spiritual too. Sun Ra, Parliament, and other soul and jazz acts famously took us into space back in the day – and in the wake of their journeys, countless other artists elected to take the trip too – soaring to the cosmos on a blend of beats, basslines, keyboards, and vocals – all elements that are given an especially electro-tuned vibe in this great second volume of the series! Fantastic sounds from one of our all-time favorite producers in soul music – the legendary Norman Whitfield, the man who helped some of Motown's artists pick up a new sort of righteous sound at the end of the 60s, before moving on to start his own Whitfield label in the 70s! If you don't know Norman, you definitely know his work – as he's the cat responsible for adding heavy basslines and fuzzy guitars to Detroit soul – picking up on some of the wider musical changes in the Motor City, and using them to push more message-oriented tracks into the scene!
