"Future Shock" has always been one of our perennial faves from Curtis, and it's paired nicely here with the spacey "Other Side Of Town", from his Curtis LP. Beautiful soul, and very righteous! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Nice stuff – and not as well known as Curtis' earlier work! "So In Love" is a great little love track – taken at a slow, slightly-funky pace, with some tight arrangements, and hard horns backing up Curtis' sweet raspy vocals! Even better is "Hard Times", a spare funky number with a great intro – chugging along with fuzzed guitar over the top, which then leads into super-dope vocals from Curtis! The cut's the same one that was done by Baby Huey – and it's just as funky, but in a totally different way! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Classic soul from Chicago! The 300-pound Baby Huey was one of the city's premier party acts in the old days, and this single – his cover of the rollicking CurtisMayfield tune (which was later done by Chicago soul descendents Earth, Wind & Fire) – is one of his best! The two-part track has a rolling party funk groove, with production by Curtis, and arrangements by Donny Hathaway! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Two sweet instrumental funky gems – both great! "El Bobo" is a Latin-tinged number from fusion giant Webster Lewis – filled with great keyboards that soar out through the tune, ala Ramsey Lewis 70s electric – but with a much more complicated groove! On the flipside, the Spirit Of Atlanta deliver their answer to CurtisMayfield – with a soaring groover that builds strongly, has a great organ so, and a very cool percussion breakdown too! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A classic if there ever was one – a seminal 70s soul track, covered by many, and featuring the classic "diamond in the back" line! Sad thing is, everyone always thinks it's CurtisMayfield – but it's William, and even better than Curtis! Part 2 is a nice instrumental extension of the song, with groovy guitar. 7-inch, Vinyl record
A wonderful single from this incredible harmony group! The Festivals should have been as big as the Impressions, Artistics, or other Chicago groups of the time – as their sound was perfect – hitting on all burners, running high and low without ever missing a beat. Both cuts here are the group at their best – "Music" a tightly dancing groover, and "Always Love You" a sad, sweet mellow one that feels like a lost early CurtisMayfield cut! 7-inch, Vinyl record
A super-dope song from Marvin Gaye – and one that wasn't originally issued on LP! The track is a very righteous, very political tune – sounding almost more like CurtisMayfield than Marvin, and with a heavy funky approach to the groove that takes the cut way past its politics! Really a great number – and a must-have 45! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Two of the best numbers from the soundtrack to Let's Do It Again! CurtisMayfield wrote both tracks – and although you're probably familiar with the funky favorite "Let's Do It Again", you'll also totally dig the spacey soul classic "After Sex"! The cut's got a spare moody feel, a mix of harp and spare guitar, building piano riffing, voices, and very light orchestrations. Incredibly haunting, and it brings back the glory days of the old Cadet Studios scene! 7-inch, Vinyl record
Two Atlanta soul tracks from the 70s – back to back on a funky 45! "Higher Than High" has a great quick-stepping groove – almost a blacksploitation sort of vibe, which is matched by some nice CurtisMayfield-type changes as the lyrics progress – but served up by Joe Graham in a style that's definitely his own! The flipside has John Edwards working some great magic on a sweet tune by Sam Dees – really opening up that emotion that Sam can bring to a song like "It's Got To Be The Real Thing"! 7-inch, Vinyl record
