Oscar Castro-Neves & His OrchestraBig Band Bossa Nova ... LP
Audio Fidelity, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99 18.99
An excellent bossa session led by pianist Oscar Castro-Neves and his band, and recorded during the blitz of early bossa sessions by the Audio Fidelity label! The group's a large one, but not too large to lose the groove – and Castro-Neves put the whole thing together so that the album's always got a nice bounce to it, and so that the jazz component comes through nice and strong! There's loads of good groovers on here, all played with a very strident hard bossa feel – and tracks include "Outra Vez", "O Menino Desce O Morro", "Chora Tua Tristeza", "Zelao", "Doralice", and "Patinho Feio". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing. Cover has light wear.)

Stan GetzBig Band Bossa Nova ... LP
Verve, 1962. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
An overlooked gem from the Verve bossa years – a session that features the sweet tenor sax work of Stan Getz, alongside some swinging bossa arrangements from the great Gary McFarland! Given the strength of Gary's own work for Verve at the time, it's no surprise that he's a perfect accompanist for Getz on the session – working with just the right amount of space to let Stan stand out from the pack, and really creating a great blend of Brazilian rhythms and some of the modder 60s styles at Verve. Gary contributed a number of originals to the session too – and titles include "Bim Bom", "Manlancolico", "Balanco No Samba", "Noite Triste", "Chega De Saudade", and "Manha De Carnival". (Jazz, Brazil) LP, Vinyl record album
(MGM stereo pressing, with deep groove.)

✨✧ Chico Buarque/Francis Hime/SimoneDona Flor & Her Two Husbands ... LP
Peters, 1977. Very Good+ ... $8.99
Great soundtrack work from Chico Buarque – thanks in large part to some help from Francis Hime, who arranged the whole set with the sort of backings heard on his own work! The soundtrack's best known for the Buarque groover "O Que Sera" – presented here in 2 great vocal versions by Simone, and also done in a few instrumental takes. Other tunes are a mix of larger orchestrations, lighter groovers, and even a few American standards re-done with Brazilian touches – and the whole thing's done with a feel that's much more 60s than you'd guess from the date – with no cheesy throw-away disco styled numbers. Titles include "La Conga", "Un Samba", "O Que Sera", "Honeymoon", and "Dona Flor's Theme". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has a split top seam, light staining on the edges, and light wear.)

Elizeth CardosoElizeth Cardoso/Zimbo Trio/Jacob Do Bandolim – Vol 1 ... LP
Museu Da Imagem (Brazil), 1968. Very Good ... $9.99
Brazilian diva Elizeth Cardoso lays down a number of tracks recorded either with the Zimbo Trio, or with Jacob Do Bandolim. The Zimbo tracks have a nice bossa feel, and the titles include "Cidade Vazia", "Abertura", "E Louxo So", "Tem Do", and "Derradeira Primavera". The cuts with Jacob Do Bandolim are a little more samba oriented, but have a nice groove. Those cuts include "Barracao", "Jamais", and "Mulata Assanhada". LP, Vinyl record album
(Later Brazilian pressing – MIS-11906. Cover has some surface wear and aging, unglued bottom seam, lightly bent panels, tiny fray at the opening, and a bit of pen and a small sticker in back.)

Brasilia RitmosRitmos Do Brasil Vol 2 ... LP
Odeon (Brazil), Early 60s. Very Good+ ... $39.99
An excellent set of lively samba tunes – played with lots of jazzy flourishes, and instrumentation that includes trombone, guitar, and accordion. Our lack of understanding of Portuguese makes the liner notes a bit difficult to decipher – but it appears that Sivuca's playing and singing on the record, as well as Wilma Valeria and the Trio Fluminense. Tracks have a quality that mixes rootsy samba rhythms with some of the tighter big band styles of the Odeon label – a great mix of sounds, if you ask us! Titles include "Passa Passa Moreninha", "Kalu", "Fogo Pago", "So Uma Louca Nao Ve", "Para Dancar", "Moreninha Ta", and "Maracangalha". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original mono pressing, in the plastic outer sleeve.)

Chico Buarque De HollandaChico Buarque De Hollanda Na Italia ... LP
RGE (Brazil), Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $11.99 38.99
An early record that really links Chico Buarque to the European scene – an audience that would keep Chico's music strong for many years, and with a reach that went far beyond some of his contemporaries! The set was recorded in Italy, but with all the charm and sparkle of his classic Brazilian recordings – and Chico sings in Italian, doing versions of some of his best early songs – all in a lively mode, inflected with samba and post-bossa grooves, and some of the best young songwriting of his youthful years. There's a slightly different vibe here than some of his other early records – but the overall sound is every bit as appealing – and titles include "La TV", "La Banda", "Juca", "Ole Ola", "Far Niente", "Maddalena E Andata Via", and "C'E Piu Samba". LP, Vinyl record album
(1989 reissue pressing. Cover has some light wear, but this is a nice copy.)

✨✧ Antonio Carlos JobimPassarim ... LP
Verve, 1987. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
A great later album by Jobim – one that has him working with "the new band", which includes younger talents like Danilo Caymmi on flute and vocals, Sebastiao Neto on bass, Jacques Morelen baum on cello, and Paulo Jobim on guitar and vocals. Jobim's voice is wonderfully aged and booze-soaked – a perfect vehicle for the darkly jazzy approach of the material. Arrangements are somewhat lighter than his late 70s work, which is a good thing – as it lifts the spirits of the tracks strongly, creating the perfect mix of joy and sadness that characterized his best bossa work. Tracks include "Chansong", "Brasil Nativo", "Bebel", "Gabriela", and the goofy "Samba do Soho". "Chansong" includes the somewhat stupid line "You look so sexy with my pince-nez, let's hijack this concord to the bahamas!" – but the overall quality of the material is quite high. LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Includes the lyric sleeve. Cover has light wear.)
