Classic Stax blues by the king of the Memphis blues scene of the late 60's. Production's handled by Stax, even though the LP was released on Atlantic, and the set includes "Born Under A Bad Sign", "Overall Junction", "Laundromat Blues", "Cold Feet", and "You're Gonna Need Me". CD
Essential New Orleans piano from Professor Longhair – an artist who was neither a professor, nor a man with much hair! The chrome-domed pianist had a huge influence on the sound of New Orleans R&B and soul to come – as he played in a triplet-heavy way that was rooted in blues, but provided a key link to the rhythms that would dominate Crescent City music in following decades. This album features original Atlantic sides cut in New Orleans in 1949 and 1953 – about as classic as you can get for Longhair, with tunes that include "Tipitina", "Hey Now Baby", "In The Night", "Ball The Wall", "Who's Been Fooling You", "She Walks Right In", and "Willie Mae". A funky bit of blues from Otis Rush – the guitarist's debut album, and a surprisingly great batch of tracks recorded at Fame Studios! Production is by Mike Bloomfield and Nick Gravenites, who are clearly going for more of a crossover sound than Rick Hall might have given the set – but that approach is a strong one, as it really brings a hard focus on Rush's guitar, and sets his slyly sliding vocals a bit more back in the mix. Sweet electric Chicago blues before it got over-Alligatorized – with tracks that include "Feel So Bad", "Baby I Love You So", "Me", "Working Man", "You're Killing My Love", and "Can't Wait No Longer". CD
Later work from guitar genius T-Bone Walker, but still very much in the style of his best R&B work! The album features small group backings that do the best to bring out the jazzier side of T-Bone's style – one that was a direct influence on countless jazz funk guitarists in later years – and players include Plas Johnson, Earl Palmer, Lloyd Glenn, and Barney Kessell playing some second guitar. Titles include "T Bone Blues", "Papa Ain't Salty", "Two Bones & A Pick", "Mean Old World", "T Bone Shuffle", and "Blues For Marili". CD
