Beautiful late work from Lonnie Johnson – recorded decades after his bigger years on record, but handled with great care by Prestige Records, during the brief run of its Bluesville imprint! Like most of the rest of the sides at the time, the approach here is to make an older mode live again – and rather than slavishly aim for the old days, Johnson sings and plays in a way that shows that he's still a very vibrant talent – offering up new music at most points, and making the best of the newer recording techniques to show off the strength of his talents on acoustic guitar! Victoria Spivey joins in on two duets, and gets to sing one other song herself – and apart from some piano from Cliff Jackson, there's no other instrumentation at all on the record. An obscure 70s album from the legendary Roosevelt Sykes – but a set that captures the singer and pianist at the height of his powers! The format here is very stripped-down – often just a focus on Sykes himself, with the occasional addition of a bit of guitar from Louisiana Red or Johnny Shines, both of whom sing slightly too. Sugar Blue also adds in harmonica on a few numbers – but the overall feel is more that of Roosevelt working by himself, almost in an after hours mode – then welcoming in some friends as they drop by to sit in on a few numbers. Muddy Waters can't get no grinding – but that's hardly a problem, given the strength of this sweet early 70s set! The album marks Muddy's return to more basic Chicago blues after his funky electric period on Chess – but the set's still got some of the trippier touches of a few years before – laid out in a much more spare, basic way! The guitar has a weird quality at times – possibly from the way the electric piano comes across at points – almost a bit like Sun Ra's rocksichord, with all the freaky fuzz that might imply! The harmonica almost feels electric too – and all three instruments come together with a nicely offbeat quality that's really head and shoulders above the usual from the Chicago scene.
