Bobby BlandMembers Only ... LP
Malaco, 1985. Very Good+ ... $3.99
A later gem from Bobby Blue Bland – done in a smooth style that fits the later approach of the Malaco label, but with a vocal style that hasn't dimmed a bit over the years! Bobby's still got that incredible rasp in his voice – that approach that easily made him one of the most soulful bluesmen of his generation – with a sense of sophistication and understanding of the music that holds true throughout the entire record. The vibe's a bit like some of Bland's late work for ABC – and titles include "Members Only", "In The Ghetto", "Heart Open Again", "I Need Your Love So Bad", "Straight From The Shoulder", and "Sweet Woman's Love". (Blues, Soul) LP, Vinyl record album

Fern KinneyGroove Me ... LP
Malaco, 1979. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A standout classic from Fern Kinney – and a set that not only marked a big moment of evolution for southern soul, but also for the Mississippi scene as well! The set was recorded at the Malaco studios in Jackson, but has a vibe that's much closer to some of the TK Records material from Miami – that maturation of southern soul during the disco era – as warmer, more modern touches came into play with rootsier styles of vocals! Mike Lewis handled the string arrangements – giving the record the same disco vibe as some of his other work of the time, including Anita Ward's big debut – and Fern's vocals have this higher range than usual for a southern singer – almost more innately tuned towards clubby rhythms. Titles include a big hit remake of King Floyd's "Groove Me" – really marking the change from the original version – plus "Baby Let Me Kiss You", "Pillow Talk", "Sun Moon Rain", "Angel On The Ground", and "Under Fire". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Cover has a cutout notch and some light peeling in ring-form on both sides.)

✨✧ Denise LaSalleRight Place, Right Time ... LP
Malaco, 1984. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A really great back to basics set from Denise LaSalle – returning to her deep soul roots after some bigger, clubbier records for major labels! There's a nicely down-home vibe to the record – the start of LaSalle's presence on the bluesier underground of the aging chitlin circuit – but still not as fully bluesy as she's be a few years later. The album draws a bit from Miami soul modes of the previous decade, but also really lets that Malaco approach grow into its own with a strong singer like Denise – finding new confidence as the label was fast becoming one of the last soul labels left in America! Latimore does a great guest appearance on the title cut "Right Place Right Time" – and other tracks include "Bump & Grind", "Good Man Gone Bad", "He's Not Available", "Why Does It Feel So Right", "Love School", and "Your Husband Is Cheating On Us". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ LatimoreI'll Do Anything For You ... LP
Malaco, 1983. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Latimore was one of those singers who never stopped being great – and even here, on a small release that never got him the fame of his 70s albums, he still sounds wonderful! His voice is sublime – easily one of the most distinct in southern soul, with an ability to be raspy and nasty one minute, and warm and smooth the next – set up here in backings that showcase the newer modes of soul that Malaco were forging at the time – which seems to work perfect for Latimore. Titles include a smooth stepping version of "Let's Straighten It Out", plus "We Don't Make Love Anymore", "Take Me Down", "I'll Do Anything For You", and "Hell Fire Lovin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a cut corner and light wear.)

✨✧ GC CameronGive Me Your Love ... LP
Malaco, 1983. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful later album from GC Cameron – a singer you might know best as the early lead in The Spinners – sounding quite different here in a Malaco Records setting! The album's got Cameron slow-stepping through some great mellow soul cuts – warm, sensuous tunes that work perfectly with his vocal approach – produced with just a few southern soul inflections by the team of Tommy Couch and Wolf Stevenson. The overall approach is light years from Detroit – and titles include "Let's Share", "Hearts & Flowers", "Give Me Your Love", "No Lovin Til Friday", "Love Trap", and "Night Like This In Georgia". ✨✧ Dorothy MooreMisty Blue ... LP
Malaco, 1976. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A pivotal moment in the development of southern soul – as the album was one of the first really big hits to come out of the growing Malaco scene in Jackson, Mississippi. The style of the record is a mix of older female southern soul styles, plus some of the warmer mellow production that was coming out of the Alston/Miami scene at the same time. And although Malaco mostly moved into cheesy blues during the early 80s, this one's very much in a popular crossover soul style. Features the title hit "Misty Blue", plus "It's So Good", "Too Much Love", "Ain't That A Mother's Luck", "Enough Woman Left (To Be Your Lady)", and "The Only Time You Ever Say You Love Me". ✨✧ Dorothy MooreOnce Moore With Feeling ... LP
Malaco, 1978. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Mighty Malaco recordings from Dorothy Moore – one of the leading torch-bearers of the southern soul sound at the end of the 70s – and an artist who definitely knows how to keep things real! Backings are full, but never overdone – and although there's a slightly modern soul feel to some of the arrangements, they're never too slick or urban – more in that new level of sophistication that was hitting some of the southern singers of the time. Titles include "Special Occasion", "Being Alone", "He Knows Just Where To Touch Me", "We Need More Loving Time", and "The Going Ups & The Coming Downs". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Syl JohnsonMs Fine Brown Frame ... LP
Erect/Boardwalk, 1982. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A bit of a comeback for Chicago soul legend Syl Johnson – a set initially recorded for the smaller indie Erect, but picked up for bigger distribution by Boardwalk thanks to a catchy title hit! The sound here is quite different from Syl's Twinight or Hi Records years – still a bit bluesy overall, but also going for a much tighter boogie-based groove – in keeping with the sound of Erect at the time. Johnson's vocals still retain that nice kind of pinch that shows his down home roots, but the instrumentation is much tighter than before – often in an electric mode that's a bit like Malaco in the 80s, only slicker. Syl produced the record with General Crook – and titles include the nice groover "Ms Fine Brown Frame", plus "Sweet Thing", "You Don't Have To Go", "It Ain't Easy", "Groove Me", and "Keep On Loving Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear, a promo stamp, and a bit of marker on the front and one label.)

✨✧ Mississippi Fred McDowellI Do Not Play No Rock N Roll ... LP
Capitol, 1970. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
An incredible record from Mississippi Fred McDowell – a set that was issued on a big label, but which has a wonderfully rootsy feel throughout – in a way that almost out-does any work from the indie blues labels of the time! The package was put together by Tommy Couch as an early Malaco production – but it's even more stripped-down than later blues work from those studios – as it features mostly just Fred on vocals and guitar, introducing himself and his music – then working through these incredible inflections on electric guitar, which are as far from the rockish sound of all the crossover blues that McDowell promises he won't provide in the title! Really timeless stuff, brilliantly recorded – with cuts that include "Red Cross Store", "61 Highway", "Jesus Is On The Mainline", "Kokomo Me Baby", and "Good Morning Little School Girl". ✨✧ SilkSmooth As Silk ... LP
Prelude, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A very different album than usual for the Prelude label – not nearly as New York as some of their other albums, and produced by Stax Records legend David Porter in Memphis and Malaco! Also, the record has a lot less of a disco vibe than other Prelude albums – still a bit clubby in points, but with more of a focus on the harmony vocals of the group – with some especially nice mellow moments! Titles include "On Fire", "Party (parts 1 & 2)", "I Know I Didn't Do You Wrong", "Leaving Me", and "Live While You Can". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Betty WrightBetty Wright Live ... LP
Alston/TK, 1978. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic live album from the great Betty Wright – and one of the few recorded documents of the way that classic soul singers would evolve the nature of their songs in a concert setting! Betty's recording for Alston/TK here, but the mode she uses is one that would grace countless performances to come from lots of her southern soul contemporaries, including many who would end up recording for Malaco in the 80s – this warmly personal, all-entertainment approach that really heightens the spirit of the singer way past their familiar songs and lyrics. Betty does some great monologue bits on the album – the most famous of which is on her 8 minute take of "Tonight Is The Night" – hugely superior to the studio version. There's also a great "Clean Up Woman Medley", in which betty sings that song and mixes it with bits of other 70s songs over the course of 11 minutes – showing that she's the one and only clean up woman! Other tracks include "Where Is The Love", "You Can't See For Lookin", "Lovin Is Really My Game", and "A Song For You". LP, Vinyl record album
