Cannonball AdderleyLove, Sex, And The Zodiac ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A classic from Cannoball and producer-partner David Axelrod – truly great stuff and maybe even better than the Zodiac set Cannonball did for Capitol! The formula is similar to that one – with David Axelrod producing, electric keyboards by Hal Galper and George Duke, spacey solos by Cannonball and Nat Adderley, and some very hip recitations by Rick Holmes on love, sex, and the zodiac! Holmes is best known as the chappie who cut "Remember To Remember" years later with Roy Ayers – but this album's got a similar "wisdom and knowledge" feel that's pretty wonderful. Titles include "Aquarius: Humanity Plus", "Cancer: All Sides", "Leo: Rosebud", "Aries: Damn Right", "Gemini: Ecstasy", and "Virgo: For Pam". CD

Rudy Ray MooreRudy Ray Moore Zodiac Album ... CD
Comedian International/Dolemite, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $5.99 12.98
One of the best of the Rudy Ray Moore raunchy party albums from the 70s, and one that must be seen to be believed! The cover has "Rudy" standing nude with "The Madam" – but the man on the front really isn't Rudy, as you can plainly see that his face has been pasted over the image of another male model! Around this image, different Zodiac signs are interpreted by images of a couple making love in different positions! But if that's not enough, the album actually has a great long track called "The Sensuous Black Man Meets The Sensuous Black Woman", plus two shorter "Trips Through The Signs Of The Zodiac" by Rudy – one for men, and one for women! ✨✧ Cecil PayneZodiac – The Music Of Cecil Payne (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
The third volume in Strata East's Dolphy Series, and a hard to find recording by the great baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne! Although Payne had his roots in earlier bop material, by the time of this recording, he'd emerged as an outspoken modernist – although few labels would give him the chance to prove himself in this respect – save for the legendary Strata East imprint, which gives Payne this chance to show a whole new side of his talents! The group is a perfect one to bridge the generations – with Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Wilbur Ware on bass, Wynton Kelly on piano, and Albert Heath on drums – stretching out beautifully in a set of original compositions that are easily some of Payne's best work on record ever. Tracks include "Follow Me", "Flying Fish", "Slide Hampton", and "Girl You Got a Home". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mort GarsonZodiac Cosmic Sounds ... CD
Elektra/El (UK), 1967. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Zodiac never sounded so spooky – and the album's one of the first in a trend that explored astrology with funky musical backings! The music for the set was put together by moogy maestro Mort Garson – then making a transition from being a straight easy arranger in the early 60s, to more of a tripped-out pop-psychedelic artist of the latter part of the decade. Garson brings a nice funky undercurrent to the set – in a style that's similar to the work of David Axelrod, but which also uses a bit more electric instrumentation. Each track features a spoken bit on a Zodiac sign – written by Jacques Wilson, and spoken by Cyrus Faryar – and the album also features some nice moog work by Paul Beaver! Titles include "Aries", "Taurus", "Cancer", "Leo", and so on! (P.S.: The label says "Must Be Played In The Dark!") CD

✨✧ Roberta KellyZodiac Lady ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A heady serving of Euro disco from Roberta Kelly – a set that has her paired with maestro Thor Baldursson in a very full-feeling set of tunes! Giorgio Moroder produced, and the Munich Machine's doing the backings – so the album's got the full complement of German groove talent of the time – all to make for a top-shelf, fully-polished batch of tracks that features Roberta's vocals in the lead – stronger than usual for this sort of large-scale disco project, with just the right kind of soul to appeal to more soul-based audiences too. Titles include "Zodiacs" – a pretty cool disco rundown of the astrological chart – plus "Love Sign", "Funky Stardust", "Sunburst", "Moondreaming", and "I'm Sagittarius". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Comet Is ComingImminent/Super Zodiac (Noss DJ Remix) (2020 Black Friday Release) ... 12-inch
Impulse, 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
A really full-on track from Comet Is Coming – a cut that has all the cosmic touches of their other work, but which also features vocals from Joshua Idehen – who's got this dark, bold vibe that really seems to send the group over the top! The cut may well be the most sonically intense track we've ever heard from Comet – and it's backed by a remix of "Super Zodiac" on the flipside! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Ruby AndrewsEverybody Saw You ... CD
Zodiac/Everland (Austria), 1970. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
One of the greatest female soul records ever to come from Chicago – a killer set of work from the legendary Ruby Andrews! Ruby's a hell of a talent that should have been huge at a national level – possessed with a deep soul style that matched the best from Betty Lavette or Mavis Staples, but often set up in more sophisticated arrangements too – in a mode that worked perfectly in a "double-edged sword" model that was often employed by other Chicago singers, like Barbara Acklin or Patty Drew. The album was issued as a follow-up to Ruby's massive cut "Casanova", which is a perfect example of this style – with Ruby's raw vocals over the top, some loping string arrangements underneath, and the whole thing working perfectly together in an amazing blend of styles! The whole album's incredibly strong, and other tracks include "Casanova 70", "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", "Tit For Tat", and "Can You Get Away". CD

✨✧ Ruby AndrewsBlack Ruby ... CD
Zodiac/Everland (Austria), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A hell of a great record from Ruby Andrews – a Chicago soul singer who started out sweet, but comes on hard and heavy on this righteous classic from the start of the 70s! The record's got a badass vibe you never would have expected from Andrews a few years before – with tremendous vocals, and these arrangements that are right on the money – and which pack a solid funky punch into nearly every tune! Brothers Of Soul provide the great backings – but Ruby's the clear star of the show, and works here in a deep soul style that blows us away every time we hear the record – and we've been listening to this one for more than a few decades. Wonderful all the way through – and with titles that include the funky classic "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", plus "Good N Plenty", "My Love Is Comin Down", "You Ole Boo Boo You", and "Overdose Of Love". Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". CD

BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 26.99
Classic breaks – all the way through – the kind of sharp funky nuggets that have had a rich new life, thanks to their use in hip hop and club tracks in recent years! This may not be the most underground stuff in the world to those out there who've been digging through crates for funk and soul for the past ten years, but it is an exquisite compilation that features some of the best funky tracks used as samples by hip hoppers, nearly every one of them a famous cut that you'll probably recognize in a minute! Titles include "I Like It" by The Emotions, "Dance To The Drummer's Beat" by Herman Kelly, "Cramp Your Style" by All The People, "Hard Times" by Baby Huey, "Ghetto: Misfortune's Wealth" by 24 Carat Black, "Kool Is Back" by Funk Inc, "Our Generation" by Ernie Hines, "Heaven & Hell" by 20th Century Steel Band, "Unhooked Generation" by Freda Payne, "Papa Was, Too" by Joe Tex, "Just A Groove In G" by Wilbur Bascomb & The Zodiac, "Be Thankful For What You Got" by William De Vaughn, and "You're Getting A Little Too Smart" by The Detroit Emeralds. 18 cuts in all! ✨✧ Marcello GiombiniAstromusic Synthesizer ... CD
Fifth Dimension (Germany), 1981. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that definitely lives up to its name – given its blend of synthesizer sounds, and it's musical approach to the twelve segments of astrology! Each track has a different astrological sign as its title – "Virgo", "Taurus", "Cancer", "Scorpio", etc – and the music is all instrumental, and makes use of lots of keyboards and electronics, often in a way that's kind of post-Tangerine Dream – tuneful, but spacey too. The whole thing's almost an update of the classic Zodiac Cosmic Sounds album from Mort Garson – given more of an 80s electronic spin – and we can gladly, and easily, put this one in the spectrum of the hippest zodiac albums ever! VariousWVON Good Guys Album (1st version) ... LP
WVON/Chess, 1960s. Very Good ... $11.99
Nice compilation album of harmony soul tracks, put together by the staff of Chicago radio station WVON, which was owned by Chess records. The front of the album jacket is covered with photos of the DJs – including Herb "Kool Gent" Kent and Bill "Doc" Lee – local legends, as well as historic figures in Black radio nationwide. A great selection of tracks, not just pulled from Chess' stable, but other leading label's of the day like Roulette & Scepter. 12 tracks in all, including "The Watusi" by the Vibrations, "Dedicated to the One I Love" by the Shirelles, "Stay" by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs, "Tonight I Fell In Love" by the Harptones and "Tears on My Pillow" by Little Anthony & the Imperials. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some wear, aging, a bit of pen and light staining. Vinyl has a small mark that clicks during "Maybe" but plays fine otherwise.)

✨✧ VariousTechnicolor Paradise – Rhum Rhapsodies & Other Delights (3CD set) ... CD
Numero, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
An insane new chapter in the mighty legacy of the Numero Group – not the rare soul, obscure psych, or underground folk the label has covered with other releases – but instead a huge batch of under-discovered gems from the exotica scene of the postwar years – essentially the farther reaches of the bigger scene that had stars like Martin Denny and Les Baxter in the spotlight! In case you're not hip, the exotica groove is kind of a hipper take on the Pacific Islands sounds – not mainstream Hawaiian music, but instead usually small combo material that has lots of percussion mixed with electric instrumentation, either on guitar or keyboards – set to imagined themes of life in the south seas, often in a very cool mix of jazz and dreamy modes. The music here is every bit as well-researched and deeply-dug as that on other Numero compilations – and it's fascinating to hear just how many folks were influenced by the huge exotic movement of the late 50s – and were motivated to turn out their own takes on the music, sometimes with styles that rivaled that of the big records of the time – sometimes with very weird and offbeat modes that are even more striking! As always with Numero, the presentation is superb – a huge set of notes with an equally large amount of music – all served up in a mighty handsome package, with work by Bill & Jean Bradway, The Shelltones, The Voodoos, The Jaguars, Jerry & The Catalinas, The Gems, The Blazers, Chayns, The Palatons, Red Harrison & His Zodiacs, The Melody Mates, The Monzas, Carmen, Darla Hood, The Baton Of Andre Brummer, Joan Joyce Trio, The Castiles, The Potted Palm, Don Sargent & His Buddies, Clyde Derby, Chico Jose, Arnie Derksen & Chise, The Slaves, Bruce Norman Quintet, and many more.
