✨✧ Mort GarsonZodiac Cosmic Sounds ... LP
Elektra, 1967. Very Good ... $14.99
The Zodiac never sounded so spooky – and the album's one of the first in a trend that explored astrology with funky musical backings! The music for the set was put together by moogy maestro Mort Garson – then making a transition from being a straight easy arranger in the early 60s, to more of a tripped-out pop-psychedelic artist of the latter part of the decade. Garson brings a nice funky undercurrent to the set – in a style that's similar to the work of David Axelrod, but which also uses a bit more electric instrumentation. Each track features a spoken bit on a Zodiac sign – written by Jacques Wilson, and spoken by Cyrus Faryar – and the album also features some nice moog work by Paul Beaver! Titles include "Aries", "Taurus", "Cancer", "Leo", and so on! (P.S.: The label says "Must Be Played In The Dark!") LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label "big E" pressing.)

Roberta KellyZodiac Lady ... LP
Casablanca, 1977. Sealed ... $4.99
A heady serving of Euro disco from Roberta Kelly – a set that has her paired with maestro Thor Baldursson in a very full-feeling set of tunes! Giorgio Moroder produced, and the Munich Machine's doing the backings – so the album's got the full complement of German groove talent of the time – all to make for a top-shelf, fully-polished batch of tracks that features Roberta's vocals in the lead – stronger than usual for this sort of large-scale disco project, with just the right kind of soul to appeal to more soul-based audiences too. Titles include "Zodiacs" – a pretty cool disco rundown of the astrological chart – plus "Love Sign", "Funky Stardust", "Sunburst", "Moondreaming", and "I'm Sagittarius". LP, Vinyl record album

Cecil PayneZodiac – The Music Of Cecil Payne (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
The third volume in Strata East's Dolphy Series, and a hard to find recording by the great baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne! Although Payne had his roots in earlier bop material, by the time of this recording, he'd emerged as an outspoken modernist – although few labels would give him the chance to prove himself in this respect – save for the legendary Strata East imprint, which gives Payne this chance to show a whole new side of his talents! The group is a perfect one to bridge the generations – with Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Wilbur Ware on bass, Wynton Kelly on piano, and Albert Heath on drums – stretching out beautifully in a set of original compositions that are easily some of Payne's best work on record ever. Tracks include "Follow Me", "Flying Fish", "Slide Hampton", and "Girl You Got a Home". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleySoul Zodiac ... LP
Capitol, 1972. Used 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest, baddest, funkiest albums Cannonball Adderley ever recorded – a massive suite of tunes based on the signs of the Zodiac, produced to perfection by David Axelrod, and featuring some hip recitations from the mighty Rick Holmes! The double-length set is completely compelling all the way through – a darkly brooding batch of funky jazz that shows a strong Miles Davis electric influence at points, thanks to Nat Adderley's spacey trumpet lines, Mike Deasy's trippy guitar, and George Duke's excellent keyboards! Other tracks are a bit more laidback, fitting the mood of their respective signs – and overall, the whole thing slips and slides wonderfully from cut to cut – taking you through the star signs with a really righteous, soulful approach. Titles include "Cancer", "Sagittarius", "Pisces", "Aquarius", "Capricorn", "Virgo", "Taurus", "Aries", "Libra", and a special "Introduction". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ruby AndrewsJust Loving You – The Zodiac Sessions 1967 to 1973 ... CD
Grapevine (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A masterful set of recordings from Chicago soul chanteuse Ruby Andrews – tunes she cut for Zodiac Records between 1967 and 1973! Ruby could handle any soul style her producers threw her way, be it driving dancefloor stompers or pure torch balladry, but she had a way of infusing everything she did with a great sense of emotion. It's the same kind of emotive, deep soul sweep that was buried so heavily in Curtis Mayfield's recordings – perhaps it's the Chicago factor! Whatever the case, this is wonderful stuff – essential to anyone interested in the best late 60s/early 70s female soul! 28 tracks in all: "Uh! Uh! Boy, That's A No No", "Help Yourself (Lover)", "Whatever It Takes To Please You", "Tit For Tat", "Good N' Plenty", "Can You Get Away", "Let's Get A Groove Going On", "Just Loving You", "The Love I Need", "Come To Me", "Wonderful Night", "Away From The Crowd", "Didn't I Fool You", "You Ole Boo Boo You", "All The Way" and lots more. ✨✧ BlowflyZodiac Blowfly/Butterfly ... CD
Weird World/House Of Funk, Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two great albums from Blowlfly on one CD! The first album follows in the tradition of Cannonball Adderley's Zodiac albums – and offers up some excellent funky tunes, all based around the different symbols of the zodiac, and all done with the usual Blowfly porno sense of humor! The backing is great – and nearly every cut has a strong funk or soul groove behind it – with the music really integrated into the performance, and not just layered in underneath the monologue. Great stuff – with a Zodiac humping cover to boot! Butterfly features the raunchy one at it again – serving up funky, filthy, and funny parodies of 70s soul and pop songs with more than enough bad language to make even the most street hip hopper turn red! The band is nice and tight on most of the tracks, grooving hard with a funky wah-wah sound underneath Blow's freaky comedy bits – and providing the funk that really makes the album work, because we'd hate to imagine it without the music! Titles include "Suck Train", "Rap Dirty", "Juice It Up", "Niggaz Ain't Sh*t", "Neither One Of Us", and "Easter Bunny". (For mature audiences.) CD

Ruby AndrewsEverybody Saw You ... CD
Zodiac/Everland (Austria), 1970. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the greatest female soul records ever to come from Chicago – a killer set of work from the legendary Ruby Andrews! Ruby's a hell of a talent that should have been huge at a national level – possessed with a deep soul style that matched the best from Betty Lavette or Mavis Staples, but often set up in more sophisticated arrangements too – in a mode that worked perfectly in a "double-edged sword" model that was often employed by other Chicago singers, like Barbara Acklin or Patty Drew. The album was issued as a follow-up to Ruby's massive cut "Casanova", which is a perfect example of this style – with Ruby's raw vocals over the top, some loping string arrangements underneath, and the whole thing working perfectly together in an amazing blend of styles! The whole album's incredibly strong, and other tracks include "Casanova 70", "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", "Tit For Tat", and "Can You Get Away". CD

✨✧ Ruby AndrewsBlack Ruby ... CD
Zodiac/Everland (Austria), 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A hell of a great record from Ruby Andrews – a Chicago soul singer who started out sweet, but comes on hard and heavy on this righteous classic from the start of the 70s! The record's got a badass vibe you never would have expected from Andrews a few years before – with tremendous vocals, and these arrangements that are right on the money – and which pack a solid funky punch into nearly every tune! Brothers Of Soul provide the great backings – but Ruby's the clear star of the show, and works here in a deep soul style that blows us away every time we hear the record – and we've been listening to this one for more than a few decades. Wonderful all the way through – and with titles that include the funky classic "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", plus "Good N Plenty", "My Love Is Comin Down", "You Ole Boo Boo You", and "Overdose Of Love". Cleveland Eaton & The Garden Of EatonKeep Love Alive ... LP
Ovation, 1979. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A mixture of funky jazz, soul, and disco – recorded with a host of studio players and a smooth jazzy finish. The record's trying to keep the groove going from Eaton's Instant Hip LP – which was quite a minor hit for him – and although we love the bassist as a jazz player, most of the album's dominated by vocal soul tracks and flashy club-oriented grooves. Includes the cool spacey track "Flying High", which has a compressed stepping groove and some cool voiceovers that talk about the dominant features of each Zodiac sign! Other cuts include "Keep Love Alive", "Burnin", "Get Off", "Free At Last", and "The Birmingham Train". LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Sound Quartet (Oscar Rocchi)Horoscope (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Edizioni Minstrel/Spettro (Italy), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A fantastic trip into the twelve signs of the Zodiac, courtesy of the Modern Sound Quartet – a very funky instrumental group that features lots of sweet keyboards from Oscar Rocchi! The music follows a similar format to other great zodiac funk records of the 70s – in that each of the tracks has a different spirit, designed to match the mood of the horoscope sign – although given that each of them gets a 70s electric approach, there's still a nicely unified feel to the set! Grooves run from funky cop/crime work to some more sophisticated modes – and titles include "Lion", "Virgin", "Cancer", "Scorpion", "The Gemini", "Balance", "Fishes", and "Aries". ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyBig Man ... CD
Fantasy/Real Gone, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the last albums ever issued by the great Cannonball Adderley – and one of the most ambitious, too! The set's a concept album – done in close collaboration with David Axelrod, in a similar spirit to some of Cannon's projects on the zodiac or the bible – but this time turned towards the legend of John Henry! The set's got some fuller orchestrations than some of the others – a bit of strings and a chorus, which sometimes gives the record the feel of a blacksploitation album, sometimes more of a Melvin Van Peebles project. Lead vocals are by Joe Williams, Randy Crawford, and Robert Guillaume – and the core combo features work from Cannonball on alto sax, Dawili Gonga on keyboards, Airto on percussion, and George Bohannon on trombone – on titles that include "Hundred an One Year", "Poundin", "The Steamdrill", "New Star Risin", "On His Bones", "Anybody Need A Big Man", "The Broomstick Song", and "Ten Mile Of Mountain". ✨✧ David Axelrod/Cannonball AdderleyMessiah ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
David Axelrod takes on Handel's Messiah – and the result is an amazingly complex set of music – very similar to his earlier albums on Capitol Records, and his Warner work with the Electric Prunes! If you love the Axe, you'll find plenty to love here – spare, dark orchestrations, often with a subtle hint of funk in the rhythms, some jazzy flourishes, and this bold sense of studio majesty that marks Axelrod as one of the most inventive producers of his time! The sound's one that gave birth to a whole generation of hip hoppers and beatheads – and the proceedings are conducted by Cannonball Adderley, with a feel that's similar to other Adderley/Axelrod high-concept sets – like Soul Of The Bible or Soul Zodiac. Titles include "Overture", "Worthy Is the Lamb", "Behold Recitative", "Comfort Ye My People", and "And The Angel Said Unto Them". CD

VariousTechnicolor Paradise – Rhum Rhapsodies & Other Delights (3CD set) ... CD
Numero, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 34.98
An insane new chapter in the mighty legacy of the Numero Group – not the rare soul, obscure psych, or underground folk the label has covered with other releases – but instead a huge batch of under-discovered gems from the exotica scene of the postwar years – essentially the farther reaches of the bigger scene that had stars like Martin Denny and Les Baxter in the spotlight! In case you're not hip, the exotica groove is kind of a hipper take on the Pacific Islands sounds – not mainstream Hawaiian music, but instead usually small combo material that has lots of percussion mixed with electric instrumentation, either on guitar or keyboards – set to imagined themes of life in the south seas, often in a very cool mix of jazz and dreamy modes. The music here is every bit as well-researched and deeply-dug as that on other Numero compilations – and it's fascinating to hear just how many folks were influenced by the huge exotic movement of the late 50s – and were motivated to turn out their own takes on the music, sometimes with styles that rivaled that of the big records of the time – sometimes with very weird and offbeat modes that are even more striking! As always with Numero, the presentation is superb – a huge set of notes with an equally large amount of music – all served up in a mighty handsome package, with work by Bill & Jean Bradway, The Shelltones, The Voodoos, The Jaguars, Jerry & The Catalinas, The Gems, The Blazers, Chayns, The Palatons, Red Harrison & His Zodiacs, The Melody Mates, The Monzas, Carmen, Darla Hood, The Baton Of Andre Brummer, Joan Joyce Trio, The Castiles, The Potted Palm, Don Sargent & His Buddies, Clyde Derby, Chico Jose, Arnie Derksen & Chise, The Slaves, Bruce Norman Quintet, and many more.
