James WilliamsFlying Colors ... CD
Zim/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $16.99
An early date from pianist James Williams – one that has him opening up in a very hip, soulful 70s mode – on both acoustic and electric piano! If you only know Williams from later years, when his phrasing became a bit more "classic", you'll really be surprised at the open flow of this set – as it's a whole group effort, with really wonderful work from Bill Easley on alto and flute, Bill Pierce on soprano and tenor, and Slide Hampton on trombone! Rhythm is from James Baker on drums, and Sylvester Sample on electric bass – the latter of which adds a nice current of warmth – and titles include "Stretching", "Soulful Bill", "Flying Colors", and "1977 AD". Columbia/Koch, 1968. Used ... $7.99
A great batch of electric-infused big band tracks – and one of the first really funky records from Don Ellis! Ellis was an emerging California trumpeter/composer who'd noodled around with some modern big band work in the mid 60s – but this hip 1968 session has him adding in elements like clavinet, Fender Rhodes, sitar, timbales, vibes, percussion, and even a spot of vocals to change the groove to a more mod and swinging one. Titles include "Mercy Mabye Mercy", "New Kind Of Country", "Zim", "Star Children", "Opus 5", "Rasty", "The Tihai", and "Milo's Theme". Plus, the CD also includes some bonus tracks not on the original album! CD

Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $16.99
South African pianist Dollar Brand was still going strong into the 80s – as this excellent quartet session will attest! The record features a group with Carolos Ward on alto sax and flute, playing next to Brand's own piano and occasional soprano sax, backed by the bass of Essiet Okun Essiet and the drums of Don Mumford. Tracks are medium length – but filled with the slow-building grace that always makes Brand's work differ majestically from most of his contemporaries. Kimming/Studer/Zimmerlin with George LewisKimming/Studer/Zimmerlin & George Lewis ... CD
Hat Hut (Switzerland), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
The legendary George Lewis plays both trombone and electronics here – both of which are a fantastic addition to the core trio efforts of Harald Kimming on violin, Daniel Studer on bass, and Alfred Zimmerlin on cello! These guys are unlike any string trio you might know from the world of serious music – as they play freely and openly, with as many sharp edges on their own instruments as Lewis brings to his – this cascading confluence of strings and tones, with lots of elements that remind us of the deeper sonic leanings of Lewis at his most experimental! Titles include "Tactus & Tatum", "Night Walk", "Very Nice", "Seven Colors & Number Ten", and "Natura Morta". CD

✨✧ Wlodzimierz Korcz07 Zglos Sie (with bonus tracks) ... CD
GAD (Poland), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
Totally groovy sounds from a top-level Polish cop show in the 70s – one that certainly didn't make it to our screens back in the day, but which definitely had a soundtrack to match some of the best American programs of the time! In fact, the style here is maybe more late 60s/early 70s than the actual dates might imply – with lots of elements that you'd hear in work from Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones, and some of their contemporaries – including lots of surprisingly strong jazz elements, mixed in with the fuller orchestrations, funky rhythms, and more electric moments! There's a bit of wordless vocalization at times – but most cuts here are instrumental, and plenty darn great throughout – a real discovery to our American ears – even though the show was one of the biggest Polish TV programs at the time. The CD features a whopping 38 tracks in all, with hefty notes in both Polish and English – and the whole thing may well be one of the grooviest Gad Records projects to date! CD

The tracks were originally recorded in Brazil for RGE, and have that crackling solid bossa style that rarely showed up so well in American studio sides of the time. The album features the group's hit version of "Garota De Ipanema" – recorded at a really great tempo, with lots of jazzy changes – plus the tracks "Zimbo Samba", "Menina Flor", and "Vivo Sonhando". ✨✧ Amilton GodoyTributo A Zimbo Trio ... CD
Tratore (Brazil), 2019. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The album's a tribute to the legendary Zimbo Trio from 60s Brazil – and pianist Amilton Gody really does a great job of getting the sound just right! The tunes are all instrumentals, with bass from Sidiel Viera and drums from Edu Ribeiro – done in that lively, rhythmic style that made the group such a legend at the time – and maybe one of the few to bridge the world of bossa instrumentals and more complex jazz-based moments – a quality that Godoy expands even more here in his arrangements! In fact, the album maybe has more jazz depth than some of the classics from Zimbo – and we mean that in the best way possible. Titles include "Bebe", "Aviao", "Pot Pourri Milton Nascimento", "Loro", "Garota De Ipanema", and "Arrastao". CD

✨✧ AzymuthAzimuth (Linha Do Horizonte) (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Som Livre/Far Out (UK), 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the sweetest electric records to come from 70s Brazil – the fabulous first effort from the Azymuth trio, and work that's hardly been matched again! Although the group here have plenty of the warm keyboard touches of their more famous later work, they're also moving in territory that's a bit more abstract as well – using some noisier electronics amidst the smoother ones, to create a style that's somewhere between fusion, electric funk, and some of the more soaring Brazilian rhythms of the post-bossa years! The keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami are worth the price of admission alone – and include Fender Rhodes, Arp, and clavinet – plus bits of Hammond organ too! There's more than a few great breaks and samples on the set – and titles include "Brazil", "Caca De Conta", "Melo Dos Dois Bicudos", "Manha", "Periscopio", and "Montreal City". Mississippi, Late 40s/1950s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really unusual slice of music from the southern African scene of the postwar years – sounds from a strange wave of cowboy-inspired music in Zimbabwe and South Africa – but with results that are completely unique! Many of these guys actually wore cowboy hats and played acoustic guitar – but the sounds are very different than American hillbilly records from the period – in part because the presentation and production are different, as is the language – but also because the guitar is used in ways that would evolve into more familiar African styles in later decades – echoes of Malian blues, highlife rhythms, and other modes. But at the same time, there actually is a bit of yodel on some of the songs, as indicated by the title – an undeniable Jimmie Rogers influence – in a set of tracks that includes work by Sammy Nagaku, Clarkson Sithole, Josaya Hadebe, Petrus Mntambo, Mathew Jeffries, George Sibanda, Sabelo Mathe, and Michael Majozi. Andre & JosiAmandla (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
A classic collaboration between Josi Ndlovu and Andre Abrahamse – both artists who had long roots in a variety of West African groups and projects before this set – and find a way to draw on that work while also finding new energy together in the studio! The tunes have a subtle, soulful sort of vibe – not really Zamrock or Afro Funk, but instead this mellow melding of those modes with others – handled with a nicely glistening production style that's never slick or commercial, but which really finds the best way to make the mellower elements shine. The set's got more than a few message-oriented tracks – which led to it's banning in a number of African nations – and titles include "Children Of Today", "Zimbabwe", "Afrodisco", "Dreaming & Scheming", "Everybody's Trying To Put Me Down", and "Motherless Child". Hallelujah Chicken Run BandTake One ... CD
Analog Africa (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $17.99 18.99
Early work Zimbabwe legends Hallelujah Chicken Run Band – a group that was an early showcase for the vocal talents of the equally legendary Thomas Mapfumo! The set's not just a Mapfumo showcase, though – as the sound here resonates strongly from the whole group – nice harmonies on many tracks – and completely wicked guitars – which often have a rhythmic, spindly, "plucked" electric groove inspired by the mbira – a sound that was enormously influential and will sound fresh forever! Those great guitar parts come from Joshua Hlomayi Dube and Elisha Josam – inspired by the mbira music that was so important at the time – and Mapfumo plays drums, too – plus many tracks have additional horns other elements from a loose group of fellow players. The set features some early material that was produced for the Teal label, and later 70s work – all of it warm, melodic and welcoming – and the sound quality is really great! Titles include "Mudzimu Ndiringe", "Kare Nanhasi", "Manheru Changamire", "Tamba Zimba Navashe", "Mutoridodo", "Sekai", "Gore Iro", "Tinokumbira Kuziva", and "Chaminuka Mukuri". CD

Seminal South African work from Harari – a group who'd previously recorded as The Beaters, but changed their name after getting a new spiritual awakening while touring Zimbabwe! That new name and new spirit really fits the sound here – an even deeper incarnation of the style they forged a few years before – graced by the increasingly strong musical chops of the trio, which features Sipho Mabuse on drums, Alek Khaoli on bass, and Selby Ntuli on keyboards – all coming together in this magical musical flow that's often graced by their joined-up vocals as well! Some tunes are straightforward and funky, others take a nice long time to build and find their way – and the set also features some nice work from jazz legend Kippie Moketsi on alto sax! Katarsis4Live At The Underground Water Reservoir ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
We're not entirely sure if the set was recorded underground, but there's definitely a sense of resonance that comes through in the performance – this echoey space that just seems to further intertwine the improvisations of the members of the group! Katarsis4 is an all-horn group – with Arminas Bizys on alto and baritone, Kazimieras Jusinskas on soprano and alto, Algridas Janonis on alto and hornpipe, and Danielus Pancerovas on baritone and alto – a blend of horns that makes for an amazing array of sounds and tones throughout the one long improvised performance on the set – sometimes all tied together, almost harmonizing – other times confronting each other in the open space of the performance – really beautiful, and in ways that are quite different than standard saxophone quartet material! There's an equal ear her for sonic possibilities as there is for music – and that makes for a hauntingly beautiful record throughout. CD

Ana LuciaCanta Triste (Japanese pressing) ... CD
RGE/Bomba (Japan), Early 60s. Used ... $19.99
A wonderful album of sad-tinged bossa tunes sung by the enigmatic Ana Lucia – a really great vocalist who gets superb backings here from Oscar Castro Neves and the Zimbo Trio! The style of the album is slightly more emotive than the usual bossa album of the time – with a dreamy approach to the vocals that reminds us of some of our favorite French or Italian singers of the early 60s, all nicely juxtaposed with a mixture of jazz and string arrangements from Castro-Neves, and produced with a light and floating finish. There's kind of a watery brilliance to the whole thing that really matches the look of the cover – and titles include "Amei Tanto", "Andam Dizendo", "Acalanto", "Derradeira Primavera", "Valsa De Euridice", "Homem De Verdade", and "Tem Do". Groovy South African soul from Linda Bab Majika – a singer who's part of that new generation of positivity that was flowing out of the scene, reaching out here with a sound that's pretty universal in appeal! The music is more conventional 80s soul than you might expect – and richer and fuller than some of the synth-heavy work of the period in South African soul – still with lots of beats and keyboards, but a bolder production sound that really suits Linda's vocals! There are occasional elements that you might recognize from bigger crossover world acts – such as the South African artists who were getting play on US radio – but the overall sound is more soul than anything else, on titles that include "Let's Make A Deal", "It's Our Home", "Don't Treat Me So Bad", "Play Boy", and "Kunzima". Bassist Ron McClure's a might generous leader – as he sets the sound up with a really rich vibe right from the start, but also lets his other quartet members really get some time to shine in the spotlight! The album's awash in great tones from Anthony Ferrara on tenor, and Rob Block on piano and guitar – the latter of whom shifts instruments on different tracks, which adds a further level of color palette to the album! Ferrara's especially great – bold, thoughtful, and very creative when he's in the lead – and the group's completed by work from Pete Zimmer on drums. Block, McClure, and Ferrara all contributed a fair bit of original material to the set – and titles include "Deep Sea Urban Planning", "Lucky Sunday", "What's Due", "To Begin", "Mending Ties", "Quiet Life", and "You & The Salt". Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/FourmenonlyModern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe/Fourmenonly – Complete Recordings (Trees/Position 2000/Fourmenonly Vol 1/Science Fiction Stories) (3CD set) ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CDs ... $38.99 42.99
A fantastic lost legacy in European free improvisation – the complete works of a group who were first known as Modern Jazz Quintet Karlsruhe, then later as Fourmenonly – presented here in a beautiful 3CD set! First up is the album Trees – issued on a small label in 1968, but a set that matches the groundbreaking energy of the early work on FMP – played by a group that features Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Wilfreid Eichorn on tenor and soprano sax, Claus Buhler on bass, Rudi Thielmann on drums, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, Mellophon, piston, and percussion! The group have a melodic vibe at the core – often feeling out the initial space as a unit, then exploding with sound and color – and really making especially great work of the talents of Joos and Eichorn – players who work together with great power, driven on by the others. Titles include "Lonely Time", "Trees", "Schnee Verbrennt", "Change Of Beauty", and "The Devil Is Green Blue Yellow". CD also features a bonus unreleased improvisation too! Next is Position 2000 – a record of even longer improvisations, and one that shows the quintet really developing their sound – strongly aware of the farther reaches, but always beginning in some more colorful passages that almost have a melody, before exploding out with very vibrant energy! The lineup is the same as on the debut – with Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, mellophone, Indian flute, and percussion – and Wilfried Eichorn on tenor, soprano sax, bass clarinet, flute, and percussion – alongside Helmuth Zimmer on piano, Klaus Buhler on bass, and Rudi Thielmann on drums. Titles include "The Sun Is Coming Over", "Position 2000", and "Where Love Forever Shines". CD also features an unreleased improvisation. For the next album, bassist Buhler has departed the group – who are renamed Fourmenonly! Their first record is a brilliant set of free jazz from the German scene of the 70s – very different than other work of the time, in that there's maybe more of a future-thinking balance between sounds and silence, frenzy and fragility – all served up by a quartet that features Herbert Joos on trumpet and flugelhorn, Wilfried Eichhorn on tenor and soprano sax, Helmuth Zimmer on piano and percussion, and Rudi Theilmann on drums and percussion. Titles include "Viridiana/Ich Und Meine Bruder/Compulsion" and "Count Down/Excess". On the album Eight Science Fiction Stories, the Fourmenonly lineup is expanded by trombonist Wolfgang Czelusta – and perform some fantastic work billed as "science fiction stories", all composed by Herbert Joos. The sound is as revolutionary as on the group's earliest material, but also maybe more compact as well – nicely focused, with especially strong emphasis on the interplay between Czelusta on trombone, Wilifried Eichorn on bass clarinet, flute, and oboe, and Herbert Joos on flugelhorn, trumpet, and mellophone. The piano of Helmuth Zimmer is amazing – almost Cecil Taylor-like in intensity at times – and drummer Rudi Theilmann does a great job of moving from passages of full-on power to more spacious percussion. Titles include "Lucifer Is Marching On", "Dead Season", "The Beauty Without A Face", "Departure", "Plastic Happiness", and "Space Wall". CD

EMI/Polysom (Brazil), 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A second great statement from the "corner club" of Milton Nascimento – that special assemblage of musicians from his home territory of Minas Gerais, augmented here in slight ways that maybe make the album an even more ambitious record than the first! All the best artists from the previous set are in place here – including the sublime Lo Borges on vocals, Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Toninho Horta on bass and guitar – but the set also features contributions from other Brazilian talents – including Chico Buarque on vocals, Ed Maciel on trombone, Paulo Jobim on guitar, and even Azimuth on a bit of grooves! As with the first set, the mix of modes is amazing – all the rich, soulful qualities of Milton Nascimento's best early work – but delivered in a magnificently collaborative mode that never wastes a minute of the extended double-length space of the album. As before, songs are penned by most of the collaborators – and titles include "E Dai", "Pao E Agua", "Canoa Canoa", "Credo", "Nascente", "Meu Menino", "Que Bom Amigo", and "Dona Olimpia". A masterpiece of spacey soul by the great Asha Puthli – a really unique 70s singer who has this incredible vocal range, and a great way of using it amidst slinkily soulful tracks – a bit like Minnie Riperton, or maybe like some of the Sylvia Striplin work with Roy Ayers! The sound here is handled by Dieter Zimmermann – a German producer who adds in all these great keyboards that go perfectly with Asha's vocals – often hitting a midtempo pace that's quite different than some of the more disco-based material she'd record later on in the 70s. Titles include the standout break track "Space Walk", which is one of our all time favorite obscure soul tracks – and other tracks include "Wonder Why", "Hello Everyone", "Flying Fish", "The Devil Is Loose", "Good Night", and "Say Yes". The funky Rob way is a massive one at that – a new path into Afro Funk modes for the 70s, with a groove that's made this set a collectors classic for decades! The group is tighter than most, yet more skittish too – percussion rattling alongside basslines that have these echoey qualities that go deep and dark, but with more of a soul-based style than some of the psych-influence work from Zimbabwe and other scenes of the time! Spare electronic bits come into play with the keyboards, guitar, drums, and bass – but at a level that's never overdone – just enough to keep things slightly offbeat and unsettling, while Rob himself grooves away in the lead! It's almost impossible to describe in words what makes this set so unique – but one drop of the needle will have you hooked for life – thanks to cuts that include "Funky Rob Way", "Forgive Us All", "Boogie On", "Just One More Time", "More", and "Your Kiss Stole Me Away". Talking HeadsFear Of Music ... LP
Sire, 1979. Very Good ... $34.99
A really tremendous album from The Talking Heads – and a set that moves far past their already-great early records, to really show a rhythmic complexity we never would have expected! Brian Eno is helping the group in the studio again here, and the record really shows both David Byrne and Eno's late 70s fascination with global rhythms – elements that are often used in spare, simple little ways to really help inflect the tunes with a playful imagination that goes way beyond the colder post-punk and new wave of most of their contemporaries! The balance of previous aesthetics with these new grooves is wonderful – heard to great effect on the classic club cut "I Zimbra" – but brewing up strongly underneath on gems that include "Mind", "Paper", "Cities", "Life During Wartime", "Memories Can't Wait", "Air", "Heaven", "Animals", "Electric Guitar", and "Drugs". Now Again, Late 70s. New Copy ... $8.99 19.98
Funky-strutting genius from Wells Fargo – one of the coolest, heaviest acts to come out of the Zimbabwe scene of the 70s – a moment when hard rock and soulful basslines came together brilliantly, to power the raw edge of a handful of groups like this! The music is maybe more late 60s than you'd guess from the date – that heady Zamrock return to the rawer corners of the American underground, at a time when so many of the bigger groups overseas were hitting AOR status – yet an approach that also mixes in plenty of lessons learned from early 70s funk and soul, especially in the massive basslines at the core of the tunes. This is the first time the group's music has ever been reissued outside of Zimbabwe – and the package brings together 11 of their rare singles – with titles that include "Bump Bump Babe", "Bwanawe", "Carrying On", "Too Long Away", "Shades Of Wells Fargo", "Love Is The In Thing", "Watch Out", and "Coming Home". CD
(Very cool package – a complete 72 page, hardcover book – with loads of notes on the band, and a huge amount of vintage images too!)

Marianna WroblewskaSound Of Marianna Wroblewska ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1972. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Very unusual work from Polish jazz singer Marianna Wroblewska – who works here in two nicely different modes! Marianna sings in English throughout – and side one mostly has her working through American standards, but which come across in a very unusual way, given her accent – with open arrangements that feature piano from either Janusz Kozlowski or Wlodzimierz Nahorny, who both have offbeat qualities that really keep things on edge. Side two is where it really gets interesting, though – as Wroblewska works with the group of alto saxophonist Zbigniew Namyslowski, one of the hippest Polish modernists of the period – in a mode that really brings Marianna's vocals into territory that singers like Karin Krog or Monica Zetterlund were hitting at the time. As with the early 70s work of those European singers, Wroblewska is almost post-jazz here – singing to English translations of songs written by Namyslowski, Nahorny, and even Komeda – with a very unusual, very compelling quality. These tunes include "I Don't Want To Sleep", "The Slowed Down Movie", "Sell Me To The Wind", and "And The Forest Sings Your Name" – and the standards include "I'll Be Seeing You", "Don't Explain", "My Funny Valentine", and "Lover Man". Zonke FamilyAt The Studio (with bonus download) ... LP
Lokalophon (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $24.99
A great trio of players from the Zonke family of Zimbabwe – working here in a rootsy mode that makes highly percussive instrumentation with their own harmonized vocals! Instrumentation is spare – all three members play ngoma drums, with round bottom-heavy tones – plus hosha and the matepe – a variation on the familiar thumb piano mode – which create these ringing notes that dance out and fly nicely around the vocals – criss-crossing in sound with a very rhythmic progression that really gives the record a great sense of energy! Titles include "Karera", "Sadza Nemusoro Wembeva", "Wako Ndewako", "Tinotengana Kuipa", "Mhembwe Muktai", and "Kuroora Mukadzi". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousAndy Votel Presents Brazilika – Non Stop Subtropical Psychedelia From The Vaults Of Brazil's Som Livre & RGE ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2008. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
The hippest installment so far in the Brazilika series – a mad mix of musical styles from Finders Keepers mainman Andy Votel – all in a freaky, funky, fuzzy blend of sounds! The tracks here are much grittier than the work we're used to hearing from the Far Out label – as Votel's dug through the 60s and 70s vaults of RGE/Som Livre Records to come up with rare Brazilian rock, funk, and other heavy styles from back in the day! As with Votel's reissues on Finders Keepers, there's a sound here that's informed by beathead record collecting – a love of older grooves directed by current musical developments – all with a definite ear for the wilder side of the sound spectrum. Most tracks have a pretty heavy groove – and the styles run from psychedelic rock through Tropicalia-inspired tunes, to post-bossa, Bahian sounds, and more. Titles include "Funga Funga" by Trio Soneca, "Careta" by Betinho, "Modulo Lunar" by Os Brazoes, "Terra Livre" by Abilio Manoel, "Os Bichos" by Trio Soneca, "De Vera" by Novos Baianos, "Ciladas" by Pery Ribeiro, "Se Voce Pensa" by Moraes Moreira, "Flores Belas" by Tim Maia, "1974" by Gerson Conrad & Zeze Motta, "Gamboa" by Brazilian Octopus, "Deixe Entrar Um Pouco D'Agua No Quintal" by Os Mutantes, "Periscopio" by Azimuth, and "Gotham City" by Os Brazoes. VariousCan't You Hear Me – African Nuggets ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
The "nuggets" in the title is very well placed here – as all the cuts here have every bit as much freak and fuzz as the American garage and pre-punk work chronicled famously on the lengendary Nuggets series! Yet these tracks are all even more obscure, and all come from African sources that never got any exposure over here back in the day – records from Zambia, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe – all brought together in a massive collection that's filled with heavy guitar work, and a fair bit of monstrous basslines too – which gives some of these tracks a slightly funky current at the bottom, even while the guitars and vocals are tripping out up top! The collection's a great complement to some of the Zamrock reissues from Now Again in recent years – and titles include "The Bad Will Die" by Keith Mlevhu, "Can't You Hear Me" by Paul Ngozi, "Black Power" by Peace, "Mad Man" by Born Free, "Breakthrough" by Funkees, "Few Bena Zambia" by Revolutions, "Come Home" by Wells Fargo, "Amanaz" by Amanaz, "Don't Take Me For A Ride" by Founders, "Like A Chicken" by Witch, and "Making Life Out Of Music" by Eye Q. Also includes the reworked "No Time (Pilooski edit)" by Witch. CD

Marina (Germany), Late 60s/Early 70s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
The In-Kraut series is at it again – moving and grooving in a hip array of funk and mod styles from the 60s and 70s – most of which are even fuzzier and more upbeat than on previous volumes! The music here is heavy on Hammond, guitar, and romping drums – and a fair bit of tunes have English language too – sometimes sung with a slight German accent, which further enforces the charm of the songs! As before, the whole package is completely top-shelf – filled with obscure German gems we'd never have heard otherwise – and supported with full notes on the music, including track by track details on each tone. Given that there's 20 titles in all on the set, that's a heck of a lot of information – so you'll have plenty to read while listening to groovers that include "Glory Be" by Daisy Clan, "Fever" by Certain Lions & Tigers, "Drift" by Heinz Kiessling, "The Beat Goes On" by Inga, "La Avispa" by The Rainbow Orchestra, "Butterflies Never Cry" by Georgees, "Whole Lotta Love" by Dieter Zimmermann, "My Soul Is Black" by Gene Williams, "High" by Karl Schiller, "Stroke It" by Ingfried Hoffmann, "That's Me Boy" by Memphis Black, and "Hipguard" by Acid. Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... $12.99
A fantastic collection of lesser-known gems from the 70s scene in Nigeria – music that's a great counterpart to better-remembered Afro Funk and soul from international giants like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade! This set digs deep, and is a nicelly expanded version of a set that Soul Jazz issued years back as a limited edition 7" single box for Record Store Day – presented here with more music, and a detailed set of notes – really getting at the special scene that was taking place in Nigeria at the time, as the nation was rising to the top of the African scene with a fantastic criss-crossing of musical modes! There's definitely plenty of the funk promised in the title, and the "rock" is usually of the funky kind with great guitar work – and a few later cuts even pick up the pace with a bit of disco, but more in the fast-funk mode, and hardly the slick stuff of the American scene. Titles include "Africans Must Unite" and "Shake Hands" by Geraldo Pino, "We'll Get Home" by The Wings, "E Ye Ika Se" by Alhagi Prof Kollington Ayinala, "Kassa Kpa Sama Kpa" by Colomach, "Beware" by MFB, "You Are The One" by Tony Grey & The Ozimba Messengers, "Single Boy" by The Wings, "Sugar Baby" by Don Bruce & The Angels", "Power To The People" by Geraldo Pino, "Igba Alusi" by Original Wings, "Dance Of The Elephants" by Sonny Okosunds Ozziddi, and "Oba Erediauwa I" by Sonny Okosuns. BBE (UK), 2008. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A heavy mix from Osunlade – every bit as soulful and spiritual as his own work, but with plenty of dark corners too! There's a depth here that goes beyond some of the previous Osunlade mixes we've heard – a sound that's likely a result of his growing work with a variety of other artists on his Yoruba label, and a real spreading of his own sound past straighter dancefloor rhythms. And speaking of rhythms, they often get pretty intense here – complicated, changing, but always with a sense of flow that's never clumsy or erratic. 2CD package features one disc of mixed music, one disc of unmixed music – and titles include "Remember (Kaytronik dub)" by Teresa Jenee, "Woman In Toilet (Stefan Goldmann macro version)" by It, "Howtwokonnekt" by Nibiru, "27 Holton (Sarafin's back to New York reinterpretation)" by Marcel Wave, "Ruff Way" by Rhythm Sound with Paul St Hilaire, "Big Theme" by Boddhi Satva, "Africa" by Alex Dimitri South Soul, and "MUSIC (Atjazz rmx)" by Andre Zimma. Numero, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
Troubadour folk from the 70s and into the early 80s – collected from rare privately issued records – the third set in the Wayfaring Strangers series from Numero! Lonesome Heroes is the male companion set to the equally excellent Ladies Of The Canyon compilation – and it features a haunting mix of spare, kind of eerily melodic vocal & guitar tunes, almost all of them by singer/songwriters who have remained largely unknown to this day. The melodies and chords are mostly on the tender, delicate side, and the voices range from gruff storytelling to sweeter singing. It really stands on its own really well in the Wayfaring Strangers series, too – the guitar playing is in service of the songs here, unlike the accomplished pickers & strummers on the Guitar Soli set, and the tunes aren't as airy as the Ladies From The Canyon material. Wonderful stuff, beatifully packages with great notes on the songs and artists, which should could go without saying, since this comes from the Numero Group! Titles include "Before" by Jim Schoenfeld, "It's So Profound" by Jim Ransom, "As I Walk" by Richard Smyrnios, "No Love Lost" by Tucker Zimmerman, "Hummingbird" by Kieran White, "The Tailor" by Jack Hardy, "Little Children" by George Cromarty, "Deep Night" by Tony Trosley, "Good Morning" by Tim Ward, "I Am The Moonlight" by John Villemonte, "O'Light" by Robb Kunkel and more. 17 tracks in all. One of the greatest records ever by the legendary Marcos Valle – a set of pure genius that's beyond description – easily one of the key records that's got him so well-remembered in recent years! The record takes Valle's earlier bossa style, and filters it through a late 60s sense of baroque pop – filled with incredible sweeping arrangements, funky undercurrents, jazzy instrumentation, and lots of other cool touches – all sifted together beautifully by arranger Lyrio Panicali, and given a hip sound that's completely sublime! The music is almost a blend of soundtrack themes, experimental bossa nova, and deeply personal songwriting – all delivered with warmly crackling vocals by Valle in a way that goes far beyond language! Titles include "Frevo Novo", "O Evangelho Segundo San Quentin", "Mentira Carioca", "Samba De Verao 2", "Azimuth", and "Mustang Cor De Sangue". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousMogadisco – Dancing Mogadishu – Somalia 1972 to 1991 (with bonus download) ... LP
Analog Africa (Germany), 1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A mountain of music from the scene in Somalia during the 70s and 80s – all of it pulled from the vast archives of Radio Mogadishu, and showing a wonderful range of expression at the time! The music here is all pretty darn funky and soulful – as you'd expect from a collection on Analog Africa – but there's also some great criss-crossing of cultural elements taking place here, both in time and space – a shift in electric instrumentation from the 70s to the 80s, and an openness to other styles of rhythms too – even a bit of reggae and dub from time to time! Yet even when things are more straightly funky, they're never too straightforward – as the music bristles with all these unusual touches and sweet instrumental twists and turns – always keeping things interesting throughout. As always with the label, there's a fantastic set of notes – a big booklet that also recounts the struggle to reissue this music, with a fair bit of Somali history and culture too – all in support of titles that include "Daraadaa Muxibo" by Dur Dur Band, "Sirmaqabe" by Iftin Band, "Godonimada Jira" by Bakaka Band, "Ladaney" by Dur Dur Band, "Hoobeya" by Shimaali & Killer, "Baayo" by Mukhtar Ramadan Iidi, "Hab Isii" by Omar Shooli, "Waakaa Helaa" by F Qazzim & Shareero, "Il Ooy Aniga" by Ifitin Band, "Geesiyada Halgamayow" by Bakaka Band, and "Check Up Your Head" by Mukhtar Ramada Iidi.
