Ultramagnetic MCsCritical Beatdown (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Next Plateau/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1988. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... About May 14, 2021
The roots of Kool Keith's abstract poetical style are in evidence here in all it's brilliant glory, properly displayed without the smug hipster irony that makes so much of his latter day projects so off putting. Plus, the Ultramags had that amazing production by Ced Gee. This is still one of our all-time favorites late 80s new school hip hop albums. With "Watch Me Now", "Ego Trippin", "Ease Back", "Funky", "Kool Keith Housing Things", "Feelin It", "Ced Gee (Delta Force One)", "Traveling At The Speed Of Thought" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ultramagnetic MCsFour Horsemen ... CD
Wild Pitch/JCOR, 1993. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The last of the classic from the initial years of the Ultramagnetic MCs. The lyrics are still in the abstract style the Ultramags are famous for, but this time they're a little less manic – despite Kool Keith dropping his trademark madness. Ced Gee's production is still up to par to say the least – this one still sounds great! Tracks include "Two Brothers With Checks (San Francisco, Harvey)", "One, Two, One Two", "We Are The Horsemen", "Saga Of Dandy, The Devil & Day" (about Negro League baseball), "Adventures of Herman's Lust", and "Delta Force II." 14 tracks in all. BatidaBatida ... CD
Soundway (UK), 2012. Used Gatefold ... $8.99
The first-ever contemporary recording on Soundway – but a set that's still got firm roots in the 70s African scene that's usually represented by the label! Batida is the brainchild of Portuguese DJ Mpula – who brings together samples from older Angolan recordings with contemporary beats and rhythms – often in a blend that's got the quick-stepping sort of pace you'd hear in favela grooves from the Brazilian scene – yet which comes across completely differently, thanks to the rich array of acoustic elements in the original recordings! There's loads of sweet guitar lines that rifle through the music – and the set also features guest contributions from contemporary MCs and producers. Titles include "Alegria", "Pronta Pra Batida", "Puxa", "Bazuka", "Ka Heueh", "Saudade", "Cuka", and "Tirei O Chapeu". CD

BJ The Chicago Kid1123 ... LP
Motown, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99 21.98
BJ The Chicago Kid's second full length for Motown! BJ has a way of recalling classic Chicago soul in the earnest, emotional realness of his lyricism and relatively mellow style, which is a nicely grounding anchor given the modern overall aesthetic. It's a contemporary sound with a timeless soul at the center. BJ's years as a guest vocalist himself makes him such a great host for guest singers, MCs and producers on his own records, too – and this one features Anderson.Paak, Rick Ross, Afrojack and others with production by Danja, Cool & Dre, Karriem Riggins and more. Includes "Feel The Vibe" feat Anderson.Paak, "Champagne", "Get Away" feat JID, Buddy & Kent Jamz, "Tome Today", "Can't Wait", "Playa's ball" feat Rick Ross, "Too Good", "Close", "Rather Be With You", "Worryin' Bout Me" feat Offset, "Reach" feat Afrojack and more. Freddie Gibbs & MadlibPinata ... LP
Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99 21.98
Streetwise raps from Freddie Gibbs, backed by inventive production from Madlib – here on one of the best records yet on 'Lib's own Madlib Invazion imprint! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight shooting, street lingo slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats. Gibbs is sharply on point throughout here, and if it seems like an oddball pairing at first glance, rest assured, these guys work GREAT together. Guests include Danny Brown – who drops some top shelf wordplay of his own on "High" – plus the Wu legend Raekwon on "Bomb", Domo Genius & Earl Sweatshirt on "Robes", Domo Genius, G-Whiz, Mac Miller and more on the title cut, and more. Other titles include "Supplier", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real" and "Uno". LP, Vinyl record album

Leaf (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 11.99
A very different album than the previous effort from drummer/percussionist Saratha Korwar – a lot more political, as you might guess from the title – and a set that has the London musician working with performers from the hip hop scenes in Mumbai and New Delhi! Most of the tunes have a soaring, majestic quality – a similar blend of jazz and global elements that we've heard in Korwar's music – but the additional of lyrics on most numbers really transforms the whole thing, and uses Korwar's strong sonic sensibilities as the backdrop for some very powerful global messages! MCs include Trap Poju, MIrande, Zia Ahmed, Aditya Prakash, Deepak Unnikrishnan, MC Mawali, and Delhi Sultanate – and titles include "Mango", "City Of Words", "Bol", "Pravasis", "Good Ol Vilayati", "Coolie", and "Mumbay". Madlib Invazion, 1990s/Early 2000s/2010. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Formative Madlib beatcraft – music made by 'Lib from 1990-2000 – crafted into a tight full length album that feels as fresh as ever! History Of The Loop Digga features funky hip hop instrumentals made at a time when he was producing underground beat tapes for himself and the Crate Diggas Palace crew of MCs. Raw Madlib hip hop beats from the early days with spackled with bits of vocals from Madlib & his Quasimoto alter ego, Declaime and others, plus mad vocal samples. At the core, it's excellent leftfield hip hop productions that aptly predicts for the unbridled genius to come, mixed in 2010 and feeling very much of the here and now. 34 shortish tracks on the CD for more than an hour of modern vintage Madlib. Titles include "Static Invazion", "Stakeout", "Rapper X Radio", "Last Day's Music", "Nothing For Nothing", "Live From Outer Space", "Further Adventures Of Walkman Flavor", "Real Days" "CDP Assassins" (Pts 1-6) and a slew of untitled episodes. ✨✧ Psalm OneDeath Of Frequent Flyer ... CD
Rhymesayers, 2006. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A big step forward for Psalm One – possibly the best female MC in Chicago – featuring some of best production we've heard by a number Chi hip hop figures – all of which is to say her sophomore album and debut for Rhymesayers is a damn fine effort all around! We were impressed by Psalm One's command of the mic on Bio Chemistry, but she really comes off as a pro here – with an often confrontational style that holds up with the best MCs, regardless of gender – and an adaptability to differing production styles that suggests she'll be around for a long time to come! Overflo does a great job producing the bulk of the tracks, while longtime Dusty Groove favorite Thaione Davis produces and raps on the epic, mood setting title track – with additional work by Maker, Madd Crates, V-Traxxx and new labelmate Ant. Tracks include "Death Of The Frequent Flyer" featuring Thaione Davis and DJDQ from Glue, "The Living", "Rapper Girls", "Macaroni And Gheese", "Standby" feat Brother Ali & Ant, "Rap Star", "Let Me Hear", "Beat The Drum" and "Mountain High" feat DJDQ, "Sworn Habit", "Peanuts" and "Rest In Peace". ✨✧ Royce Da 5'9Allegory (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
E One, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... On July 17, 2021
Royce Da 5'9 hitting what we think will go down as a later career creative high point – creeping up on 20 years since his debut solo album and more than 2 decades since the first Bad Meets Evil single! Royce's reputation as one of the stronger MCs of his generation rings true on Allegory for sure, with rhymes that are self-reflective and socially aware at the same time. This one is largely produced by Royce as well – and on the best tracks that production is compelling enough without getting in the way of his voice, the background sounds stretching out and letting the rhymes carry the load. Those rhymes are strongly relevant to the times, but crafted in a way that'll ring true for years to come. Includes "Mr Grace", "Dope Man", "I Don't Age", "Generation Is Broken", "Overcomer", "Thou Shall", "Tricked", "Black People In America", "Black Savage", "Rhino Doo Rag", "Young World", "My People Free", "Hero", "Upside Down" and more. (Note: This item is not for sale online until noon on Saturday, July 17. ✨✧ Run-DMCRun-DMC (expanded edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Profile, 1984. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
The classic self-titled debut LP from Run-DMC – one that not only changed hip hop, but much of modern pop and rock forever! There's little we can add to the canon for this record, but the way Run-DMC ushered in a new era in contemporary urban culture, a harder hitting style of rap that managed to bust out of the inner cities and into consciousness of an entire generation, was unforeseen and never to be duplicated to say the least. You can literally call this album revolutionary without sounding heavy handed, it's something very few artists can ever hope to achieve. Amazing! Tracks include "It's Like That", "Sucker MC's", "Rock Box", "Jay's Game", "Hard Times", "30 Days", "Hollis Crew", "Wake Up", and "It's Like That" – and this expanded edition includes the bonus tracks "Rock Box (B-Boy Mix)", "Here We Go (Live At The Funhouse)", "Sucker MCs (Live)" and "Russell & Larry Running At The Mouth". The long-awaited return of the Whitefield Brothers – melding global funk and tripped out psychedelia as masterfully as on their massive In The Raw album – and tripping it out and funking it up even more this time! The psychedelic sounds get more pronounced play this time out, but it's still well within the funk realm – gritty drums and percussion under fuzzed out rhythms, keys that range from a jazzy funk groove to thick layers of fuzz and bubbling atmospherics, exotic string accents, heady bass grooves and more. Their reach is global, too, with influences from the east and the west – and a heck of an impressive guest roster – with leftfield MCs on a couple gems – Edan & Mr Lif on "The Gift" and Percee P & MED on "Reverse" – plus Bajka, Brooklyn funk revival masters the El Michels Affair, and fellow psych funk traveller Quantic. Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $34.99 39.99
The real sound of the old school, and the best beats from the streets – the kind of early underground hip hop tracks that still sound wonderful after all these years! These are tracks from the earliest years of the style – when funk was as much a part of the music as lyrics – and tracks were often surprisingly long, and spun out in the best sort of party mode – with an excellent focus on funky drum breaks and basslines, matched by lyrics from youthful crews and MCs that set the standard for countless artists to come! As with the first volume, the track selection here is wonderful – a mix of key classics from the Harlem and South Bronx scenes, plus some overlooked gems that are well-worth discovering – all wrapped up with the usual top-shelf attention to detail we've come to expect from Soul Jazz Records! The package features loads of great notes and photos – and titles include "Maximus Party" by TJ Swann & Pee Wee Mel, "Death Rap" by Margo's Kool Out Crew, "Lookin Good" by Eddie Cheba, "One Time Two Time Blow Your Mind" by MC Rock Lovely, "Let's Rock" by Harlem World Crew, "School Days" by Busy Bee, "Ah That's The Joint" by Kool DJ AJ, "Dancin Party People" by Little Skarsky, "Young Ladies" by Lonnie Love, "Rappin Partee Groove" by Rappers Rapp Group, "The People's Message Take Two" by Terry Lewis & Wild Flower, "Shake Your Body" by Manujothi, "Dr Ice Rap" by Zoot II, and "Rock The Message Rap" by Grand Master Chilly T & Stevie G. VariousDon't Stop – Recording Tap ... CD
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 19.99
Not much of a cover photo, but one of the most amazing collections so far from the Numero Group – a richly archival project that finally brings to light the lost efforts of the short lived Tap Records label! Tap was the brainchild of Jeremiah Yisrael – an ambitious producer, and legendary perfectionist – so much so that he often put more effort into these indie productions than you'd find at bigger label projects of the time! Most material here dates from the years 1981 and 1982, and the music is a mix of club, modern soul, boogie, and a bit of hip hop – nearly all of which hardly got any exposure at the time. The booklet not only tells the tale of the label and Yisrael's career, but also Numero's efforts in resurrecting these lost tapes from a very moldy near-death experience – a narrative that's almost as exciting as the music in the package. And the package is pretty great too – not only because of the 24 page, full color booklet – but also because of the supplemental book that reproduces lost sheet music and studio notes from the Tap sessions. Amazing stuff throughout – well worthy of another deep bow for the Numero team – with a total of 14 tracks that include "Breakout" and "We've Had Enough" by Arnie Love & The Lovettes, "Invisible Wind" and "Guilty" by Jackie Stoudemire, "Missy Missy Dee" by Missy Dee & The Melody Crew, "So Nice" by Annette Denvil, "Rub A Dub Dub" by The Fabulous 3 MCs, "Don't Stop Dancin" and "Run Away Hide From Love" by Jackie Stoudemire, and "Breakout" by Magnetism. Also features two tracks from 1971 – "Does He Really Mean It" and "Love Which Way" by Bonnie Freeman. CD

✨✧ Cut ChemistAudience's Listening ... CD
Warner, 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cut Chemist brings his deep digging style out of the world of legendary mix sets and behind-the-scenes hip hop wizardry – finally out front with (can you believe this?) his first ever solo album! Sadly, you have to worry when a great hip hop DJ/producer gets a major label solo album in this sad day and age of expensive sample clearance, as they often feel a little bit neutered by the system. Never fear in this case. Chem builds his signature eclectic craft around samples – some fairly obvious and some quite surprising – with occasional live instrumentation and a few appearances by topshelf underground MCs. The sounds are far too diverse to nail in a sentence or two, but they run from a catchy hip hop thump, to some Brazil-sampling groovers, to funky avant garde bits. Too many newer beatmakers opt for an obtuse, laptop-derived, barely musical approach. All the more reason to cherish Cut Chemist! Tracks include "Motivational Speaker", "(My 1st) Big Break", "The Lift", "The Garden", "Spat", "What's The Attitude" feat Hymnal, "Metrorail Thru Space", "Storm" feat Edan & Mr Lif, "2266 Cambridge" feat Thes One, "Spoon", "A Peak In Time" and "The Audience Is Speaking Theme Song". Whereas I Wish My Brother George Was Here was sort of the loopy, semi-comical cousin to the tonally heavier G-Funk sound, No Need For Alarm has a tighter, somewhat little harder hitting sound – more akin to the jazzy Hiero beats you've come to know and love! Elektra/Traffic, 1993. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The incredible follow-up to I Wish My Brother George Was Here – and a record that was initially underappreciated, mostly because it was such a radical departure from the George – but it's one that we loved from day one and we're thrilled is getting some love all these years later! There are days when we feel like this is our favorite Del LP. Includes "Catch A Bad One", "Wack MCs", "No Need For Alarm", "Boo Boo Heads", "Worldwide", "No More Worries", "Wrong Place", "In & Out" and "Miles To Go". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MadlibPinata Beats ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The restlessly inventive Madlib beats and production for Pinata, the excellent duo project with MC Freddie Gibbs! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight-shooting, street lingo-slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's just leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats than on some the more freeform Madlib projects. We wouldn't dream of fronting on Freddie Gibbs' impeccable rhymes on the vocal version, but these moody instros are incredible, on par with Madlib's best work. Titles include "High", "Bomb", "Robes", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real", "Uno", "Pinata" and more. CD

✨✧ Pete Rock & Camp Lo80 Blocks From Tiffany's II ... CD
Soul Brother, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully old school set from Pete Rock and Camp Lo – beats by the former, rhymes by the latter – and guest work from a host of talents who include Talib Kweli, Uncle Murda, MOP, Tyler Woods, and Mac Miller! The whole thing's got a great 90s hip hop vibe – Pete Rock very much at the top of that style he helped forge back in the day – and the MCs serving up the sorts of modes we used to love hearing from stations on the left end of the dial, late in the night! Nobody's trying to break any boundaries, but maybe that's what makes the record so great – with titles that include "You Never Seen A City Like This", "Love Traps", "80 Blocks From Tiffany's", "Glitter & Gold", "Dream Journey", "Pot A Butta", "Clean Getaway", and "Ladies & Gentlemen". ✨✧ Whitefield BrothersEarthology (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Now Again, 2010. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Joyful Exaltation", "Safari Strut", "Taisho", "Sad Nile", "Ntu", "Pamukkale", "Alin", "Breakin Through" feat El Michels Affair, "Sem Yelesh", "Lullaby For Lagos" feat Quantic, "Chich" and more. Jay McShannBig Apple Bash ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A much groovier record than you might expect – hardly the older-styled jazz session normally associated with Jay McShann, and more of a wide-ranging session that brings in some great contemporary touches! The album's something of a celebration for Jay – and it features wonderful guest work from players who include Gerry Mulligan on baritone and soprano sax, Herbie Mann on flute and tenor sax, John Scofield on guitar, Doc Cheatham on trumpet, and Eddie Gomez on bass. A few tunes have an older Kansas City sort of swing, but others have a vamping groove that's really great – and these numbers really stand out in the set with some great solo moments. Titles include "Crazy Legs & Friday Strut", "Blue Feeling", "Jumpin The Blues", "Dickie's Dream", and "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water". CD

Col Nolan Soul SyndicateWhatever It's Worth ... CD
CBS/Pacific Theatre Encore (Australia), 1968. New Copy ... $12.99
A fantastic funky set from the Sydney scene of the 60s – one of the coolest, cookingest combos to ever record in Australia at the time – and a group with a mix of mod and soul elements that reminds us of the best organ jazz recorded in London too! The group's led by the mighty Col Nolan – whose handling of the Hammond is wonderful – with lots of cool, compressed tones that work very well with the funky drums of John Sangster – a player that most folks know for his other records that feature vibes instead of drums! Sangster's great here kicking up a groove for the combo – and the tunes also feature plenty of tenor and flute from Col Loughnan, whose tight lines underscore all the best elements in the organ. There's a wonderful 60s nite club vibe running through the whole set – and titles include "Shades Of McSoul", "Sunny", "Blues For Madeline", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Rivera Mountain", and "Whatever It's Worth". PentanglePentagle – The Albums 1968 to 1972 (Pentangle/Sweet Child/Basket Of Light/Cruel Sister/Reflection/Solomon's Seal – plus bonus tracks) (7CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... $64.99
An incredible run of music from a really legendary band – a quintet who were as important to the British folk scene as Fairport Convention – and one who worked with an equally hip sort of vibe! Where that group featured key work from a young Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny, this one features mindblowing guitars from John Renbourn and Bert Jansch – a duo who would already be fantastic enough on their own, but who really open up in the sound of the group – way past their own wonderful albums of just a few years before! Part of the strength of Pentangle likes in the vocals of Jaqui McShee – a singer who's clearly got an ear for jazz, and brings in a strong sense of improvisation and extrapolation – as do both guitarists in the music. The bass is also fantastic – handled by Danny Thompson, who also seems to be a jazzman at heart – given the way he bends and shades things, at a level that no folk group ever would do. Percussionist Terry Cox is the remaining member of the group – nicely understated, and working with Thompson in this way that makes for these cool gentle grooves that Renbourn or Jansch never would have hit on their own. Every record here is a gem – and the set not only includes all six albums (one of which is a double) in these tiny LP-styled sleeves, it also features an insane number of bonus tracks too – and a huge book on the group and their music. 115 tracks in all – including 54 bonus tracks, a number of which are previously unreleased! ✨✧ Dexter GordonSwingin' Affair (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1962. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazingly simple – but amazingly satisfying session from Dexter Gordon! The group's a totally solid quartet with Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the groove is right in the pocket with a solid solid soulful feel that you don't always get on Gordon's other Blue Note albums! There's a simple elegance here that's really beautiful – Gordon at his post-bop best, but without any of the over-extended modes of his too-long solo years – a mix that's really rare, and carried off impeccably for this set. The record starts with the amazing "Soy Califa", a nice hardbop number with a good Latiny feel, then slides into lots of other nice ones like "McSplivens", "The Backbone", and "Don't Explain".
