Frederic GallianoFrederic Galliano Presents Kuduro Sound System ... CD
Frikyiwa (France), 2006. Used ... $1.99
One of the more urban-oriented albums we've heard from Frederic Galliano – a set that's heavy on hip hop, dancehall, and bass-heavy elements – and one that almost offers up an African equivalent of Brazilian baile funk! The album gives strong focus to the work of the Kuduro Sound System – a decade-old group founded in Angola by Tony Amado, billed in the notes as that nation's equivalent of Grandmaster Flash! The sound here is much more modern than you'd expect from that old school reference, though – heavy on the beats, often moving at a very fast tempo that's supposedly inspired by Angolan carnival music – and topped with vocals from a variety of singers and MCs. Other artists include Dog Murras, Gata Agressiva, Pai Diesel, Pinta Tirru, Kito Da Machina, and Zoca Zoca. Titles include "Somos D Viana", "Pra Aquecer", "Autra Maca Mais", "Merete", "Ate Quando", "Isto E Kuduro", "Entra Na Roda", and "Superbo Kuduro". CD

J Dilla & OthersRebirth Of Detroit ... CD
Ruff Draft, 2012. Used ... $9.99
Dilla beats and an allstar roster of guest Detroit MCs – and a strong debut full length from Ruff Draft Records! Posthumous releases by favorite departed figures can be a dicey proposition – and much to our relief, Rebirth Of Detroit delivers – with both high quality beats & rhymes, and positive mojo! Dilla didn't cop to current trends in his time on earth (except for the ones he started in the first place) so it stands to reason that the beats he had in the can before he departed would hold up strongly years later – and they do! The guests here bring their A-games, plus full respect and admiration for Dilla. Includes "The New Installment", "Detroit Madness" with Phat Kat, "Big Things" with Esham, "Let's Pray Together" with Amp Fiddler, "Requiem" with Allan Barnes of The Blackbyrds, "My Victory" with Boldy James, "Do It For Dilla Dog" with Illa J and Frank Nitt, "Jay Dee's Revenge" with Danny Brown and cuts by DJ Dez, "Houseshoes Was Spinnin'" with Quelle Chris and more. Sarathy KorwarMore Arriving ... CD
Leaf (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $7.99 11.99
A very different album than the previous effort from drummer/percussionist Saratha Korwar – a lot more political, as you might guess from the title – and a set that has the London musician working with performers from the hip hop scenes in Mumbai and New Delhi! Most of the tunes have a soaring, majestic quality – a similar blend of jazz and global elements that we've heard in Korwar's music – but the additional of lyrics on most numbers really transforms the whole thing, and uses Korwar's strong sonic sensibilities as the backdrop for some very powerful global messages! MCs include Trap Poju, MIrande, Zia Ahmed, Aditya Prakash, Deepak Unnikrishnan, MC Mawali, and Delhi Sultanate – and titles include "Mango", "City Of Words", "Bol", "Pravasis", "Good Ol Vilayati", "Coolie", and "Mumbay". MadlibPinata Beats ... CD
Madlib Invazion, 2014. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
The restlessly inventive Madlib beats and production for Pinata, the excellent duo project with MC Freddie Gibbs! If you'll forgive us a little bit of repetition – because we KNOW we've written this before – there's just something extra riveting about Madlib's production work for straight-shooting, street lingo-slinging, no nonsense MCs. The freewheeling inspiration and bottomless depth of unpredictable sample funk is there, as always. It's just leaner, tighter and with a thicker backdrop of beats than on some the more freeform Madlib projects. We wouldn't dream of fronting on Freddie Gibbs' impeccable rhymes on the vocal version, but these moody instros are incredible, on par with Madlib's best work. Titles include "High", "Bomb", "Robes", "Scarface", "Deeper", "Harold's", "Thuggin'", "Real", "Uno", "Pinata" and more. CD

A wonderfully old school set from Pete Rock and Camp Lo – beats by the former, rhymes by the latter – and guest work from a host of talents who include Talib Kweli, Uncle Murda, MOP, Tyler Woods, and Mac Miller! The whole thing's got a great 90s hip hop vibe – Pete Rock very much at the top of that style he helped forge back in the day – and the MCs serving up the sorts of modes we used to love hearing from stations on the left end of the dial, late in the night! Nobody's trying to break any boundaries, but maybe that's what makes the record so great – with titles that include "You Never Seen A City Like This", "Love Traps", "80 Blocks From Tiffany's", "Glitter & Gold", "Dream Journey", "Pot A Butta", "Clean Getaway", and "Ladies & Gentlemen". The album's mostly produced by Sol Messiah – Sa-Roc's longtime musical partner, and a talent who really knows how to deliver the right sort of crisp crackle to match the shifting intensity of the vocals – augmented at parts with contributions from Ledisi, Black Thought, Styles P, and Saul Williams – although the magnetic energy of Sa-Rock in the lead is hard to match. Slum VillageFantastic Vol 1 ... LP
Long Player/Ne'Astra, 1997. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $19.99 24.98
Slum Village's legendary Fantastic Vol 1 – one of the most sought-after hip hop albums of the era – with the most rugged-and-raw Jay Dee production on record! Honestly, we're left pretty close to speechless by how tightly these tracks hold up. This is indeed the template for so many great Dilla productions to come, but it's much more than merely that. While the MCs may not spin the most revolutionary rhymes in the world, the way the mics so deftly fill the deceptively spare production is nothing short of masterful. To put it another way, this genuinely lives up to the legend. This is the 2LP version with 24 in all: "Keep It On (This Beat)","Forth & Back","Beej N Dem", "Hoc N Pucky", "Give This N***a", "Players", "I Don't Know", "Look Of Love (Rmx)", "2 You 4 You", "How We BullS**t", "Estimate" and more. The long-awaited return of the Whitefield Brothers – melding global funk and tripped out psychedelia as masterfully as on their massive In The Raw album – and tripping it out and funking it up even more this time! The psychedelic sounds get more pronounced play this time out, but it's still well within the funk realm – gritty drums and percussion under fuzzed out rhythms, keys that range from a jazzy funk groove to thick layers of fuzz and bubbling atmospherics, exotic string accents, heady bass grooves and more. Their reach is global, too, with influences from the east and the west – and a heck of an impressive guest roster – with leftfield MCs on a couple gems – Edan & Mr Lif on "The Gift" and Percee P & MED on "Reverse" – plus Bajka, Brooklyn funk revival masters the El Michels Affair, and fellow psych funk traveller Quantic. Titles include "Joyful Exaltation", "Safari Strut", "Taisho", "Sad Nile", "Ntu", "Pamukkale", "Alin", "Breakin Through" feat El Michels Affair, "Sem Yelesh", "Lullaby For Lagos" feat Quantic, "Chich" and more. VariousDon't Stop – Recording Tap ... CD
Numero, Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 19.99
Not much of a cover photo, but one of the most amazing collections so far from the Numero Group – a richly archival project that finally brings to light the lost efforts of the short lived Tap Records label! Tap was the brainchild of Jeremiah Yisrael – an ambitious producer, and legendary perfectionist – so much so that he often put more effort into these indie productions than you'd find at bigger label projects of the time! Most material here dates from the years 1981 and 1982, and the music is a mix of club, modern soul, boogie, and a bit of hip hop – nearly all of which hardly got any exposure at the time. The booklet not only tells the tale of the label and Yisrael's career, but also Numero's efforts in resurrecting these lost tapes from a very moldy near-death experience – a narrative that's almost as exciting as the music in the package. And the package is pretty great too – not only because of the 24 page, full color booklet – but also because of the supplemental book that reproduces lost sheet music and studio notes from the Tap sessions. Amazing stuff throughout – well worthy of another deep bow for the Numero team – with a total of 14 tracks that include "Breakout" and "We've Had Enough" by Arnie Love & The Lovettes, "Invisible Wind" and "Guilty" by Jackie Stoudemire, "Missy Missy Dee" by Missy Dee & The Melody Crew, "So Nice" by Annette Denvil, "Rub A Dub Dub" by The Fabulous 3 MCs, "Don't Stop Dancin" and "Run Away Hide From Love" by Jackie Stoudemire, and "Breakout" by Magnetism. Also features two tracks from 1971 – "Does He Really Mean It" and "Love Which Way" by Bonnie Freeman. CD

✨✧ John Legend & The RootsWake Up (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Okayplayer, 2010. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
John Legend shakes loose of the contemporary pop soul style of his previous couple of records with a comparatively raw and direct soul vibe – revisiting some of best socially aware, emotionally resonant and still relevant songs of the 60s & 70s! The best tracks on the set are the ones that have the rawest, most live sounding groove – and there's plenty of that, as he's backed by The Roots. There's no denying John Legend's truthful love of this material, and he sings with genuine depth. They wisely choose numbers with lyrics that stand true to this day, a few of which feature fresh rhymes by guest MCs that further bridge the eras. The track selection is excellent – covering classics by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway and they also go as deep as Baby Huey & Eugene McDaniels. Includes "Hard Times" with Black Thought, "Compared To What", "Wake Up Everybody" with Common & Melanie Fiona, "Our Generation" feat CL Smooth, "Little Ghetto Boy" feat Black Thought (plus the prelude with Malik Yusef), "Hang On In There", "Wholy Holy", "Shine" and more. ✨✧ Royce Da 5'9Allegory ... CD
E One, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Royce Da 5'9 hitting what we think will go down as a later career creative high point – creeping up on 20 years since his debut solo album and more than 2 decades since the first Bad Meets Evil single! Royce's reputation as one of the stronger MCs of his generation rings true on Allegory for sure, with rhymes that are self-reflective and socially aware at the same time. This one is largely produced by Royce as well – and on the best tracks that production is compelling enough without getting in the way of his voice, the background sounds stretching out and letting the rhymes carry the load. Those rhymes are strongly relevant to the times, but crafted in a way that'll ring true for years to come. Includes "Mr Grace", "Dope Man", "I Don't Age", "Generation Is Broken", "Overcomer", "Thou Shall", "Tricked", "Black People In America", "Black Savage", "Rhino Doo Rag", "Young World", "My People Free", "Hero", "Upside Down" and more. The landmark debut of Mary J Blige – a record that not only did a great job of blending underground hip hop and mainstream soul sensibilities – but maybe also opened the door for the Neo Soul revolution to come! Mary comes on here with a fresh new vision in female soul – one that's informed by the youth and upfront energy of the hip hop female MCs that preceded her – but with a depth that also makes Blige sort of the new Aretha Franklin for the end of the century – a deep soul singer, but one who's equally at home in the streets and the studio. Important production is by a young Sean Combs – some of his first great work on record – and the set also features guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Little Shawn, Grand Puba, Erick Sermon, and CL Smooth. Titles include "Real Love", "Sweet Thing", "Love No Limit", "You Remind Me", "Reminisce", "What's The 411", "I Don't Want To Do Anything", "Changes I've Been Going Through", "Slow Down", and "My Love". A very cool trip through the world of 80s hip hop – particularly the hippest tracks from labels that include Fresh, Sleeping Bag, Warlock, B-Boy, and Idlers Records – all laid out here in a non-stop mix that's almost 70 minutes long! The package pulls together classics from the mid 80s east coast scene, plus some lesser-known album cuts too – and DJ Koko has a great way of keeping things focused on the core of most tunes, while also really making the records leap from the decks throughout the mix. 38 tracks in all – including "Tall Dark & Handsome" by Tall Dark & Handsome, "B Boy Document" by Krown Rulers, "Strong Island (blue mix)" by JVC Force, "You Can't Break B Boys" by Baby Doll, "Bridge Is Over" by Boogie Down Productions, "Going Way Back" by Just Ice, "Let's Jam (inst)" by DJ Mate & The Latin MCs, "It's Yours" by T La Rock & Jazzy Jay, "Can't Get Enough" by Soul Dimension, "The Bronx Is Back" by Tall Dark & Handsome, "Back To The Beat" by Todd Terry, "Free Flow" by Just Ice, "Hardcore Hip Hop" by Mantronix, "Get Retarded" by MC EZ & Troup, and "Soul Food" by Tuff Crew. ✨✧ Jay McShannBig Apple Bash ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much groovier record than you might expect – hardly the older-styled jazz session normally associated with Jay McShann, and more of a wide-ranging session that brings in some great contemporary touches! The album's something of a celebration for Jay – and it features wonderful guest work from players who include Gerry Mulligan on baritone and soprano sax, Herbie Mann on flute and tenor sax, John Scofield on guitar, Doc Cheatham on trumpet, and Eddie Gomez on bass. A few tunes have an older Kansas City sort of swing, but others have a vamping groove that's really great – and these numbers really stand out in the set with some great solo moments. Titles include "Crazy Legs & Friday Strut", "Blue Feeling", "Jumpin The Blues", "Dickie's Dream", and "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water". CD

Dexter GordonSwingin' Affair (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
An amazingly simple – but amazingly satisfying session from Dexter Gordon! The group's a totally solid quartet with Sonny Clark on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the groove is right in the pocket with a solid solid soulful feel that you don't always get on Gordon's other Blue Note albums! There's a simple elegance here that's really beautiful – Gordon at his post-bop best, but without any of the over-extended modes of his too-long solo years – a mix that's really rare, and carried off impeccably for this set. The record starts with the amazing "Soy Califa", a nice hardbop number with a good Latiny feel, then slides into lots of other nice ones like "McSplivens", "The Backbone", and "Don't Explain". Col Nolan Soul SyndicateWhatever It's Worth ... CD
CBS/Pacific Theatre Encore (Australia), 1968. New Copy ... $12.99
A fantastic funky set from the Sydney scene of the 60s – one of the coolest, cookingest combos to ever record in Australia at the time – and a group with a mix of mod and soul elements that reminds us of the best organ jazz recorded in London too! The group's led by the mighty Col Nolan – whose handling of the Hammond is wonderful – with lots of cool, compressed tones that work very well with the funky drums of John Sangster – a player that most folks know for his other records that feature vibes instead of drums! Sangster's great here kicking up a groove for the combo – and the tunes also feature plenty of tenor and flute from Col Loughnan, whose tight lines underscore all the best elements in the organ. There's a wonderful 60s nite club vibe running through the whole set – and titles include "Shades Of McSoul", "Sunny", "Blues For Madeline", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Rivera Mountain", and "Whatever It's Worth". ✨✧ PentanglePentagle – The Albums 1968 to 1972 (Pentangle/Sweet Child/Basket Of Light/Cruel Sister/Reflection/Solomon's Seal – plus bonus tracks) (7CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible run of music from a really legendary band – a quintet who were as important to the British folk scene as Fairport Convention – and one who worked with an equally hip sort of vibe! Where that group featured key work from a young Richard Thompson and Sandy Denny, this one features mindblowing guitars from John Renbourn and Bert Jansch – a duo who would already be fantastic enough on their own, but who really open up in the sound of the group – way past their own wonderful albums of just a few years before! Part of the strength of Pentangle likes in the vocals of Jaqui McShee – a singer who's clearly got an ear for jazz, and brings in a strong sense of improvisation and extrapolation – as do both guitarists in the music. The bass is also fantastic – handled by Danny Thompson, who also seems to be a jazzman at heart – given the way he bends and shades things, at a level that no folk group ever would do. Percussionist Terry Cox is the remaining member of the group – nicely understated, and working with Thompson in this way that makes for these cool gentle grooves that Renbourn or Jansch never would have hit on their own. Every record here is a gem – and the set not only includes all six albums (one of which is a double) in these tiny LP-styled sleeves, it also features an insane number of bonus tracks too – and a huge book on the group and their music. 115 tracks in all – including 54 bonus tracks, a number of which are previously unreleased!
