✨✧ Jorge BenAfrica Brasil (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A landmark recording that is one of Jorge Ben's best albums ever! The album is a perfect realization of the way that Jorge mixes Brazilian rhythms with choppy Afro grooves – and the result is a masterpiece that yielded some of his biggest tracks ever. Included here is the great choppy funk track "Ponta De Lanca", plus loads of other goodies like "O Filosofo", "Xica Da Silva", "A Historia De Jorge", and a great remake of "Taj Mahal" – probably his greatest cut ever. Great all the way through – and is a perfect introduction to Jorge Ben if you don't know his work, and an essential addition to your collection if you do! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jorge BenSolta O Pavao (pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Philips/Survival Research (Australia), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overlooked treasure from the great Jorge Ben – an album recorded between the fame of his "Taj Mahal" hit and Africa Brasil classic – and a set that's every bit as wonderful as those two records! There's a tight, choppy groove to most of the set – that mix of samba, soul, and currents of American funk that Jorge created in his music – turned here towards some of the unusual themes that showed up on his Tabua De Esmeralda album, but maybe given a bit more punch, too – so that even without the benefit of language, the vocals and grooves on the set are completely captivating to a global audience! There's loads of fresh sounds here – some real under-discovered gems from Jorge's key 70s years – and titles include "Cuidado Com O Bulldog", "Zagueiro", "Para Ouvir No Radio (Luciana)", "Jorge De Capadocia", "Dumingaz", "Se Segura Malandro", and "Jesualda". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Louie VegaElements Of Life ... CD
Vega, 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
Louie Vega breaks out with an amazing solo album – still very much steeped in the soulful voice of his Masters At Work recordings, but also with a strong voice that's all his own! Of course, Louie's not alone in the proceedings – as he gets help from Blaze, Ursula Rucker, Domingo Quinones, Raul Midon, Anane, and others – all of whom come together with Louie in one of the most joyous albums we've heard in years! The set's a real celebration of life and groove – filled with the optimistic, almost-global spirit of work in the New York/Spiritual Life mode – breaking down boundaries, cultures, and colors with a sunny approach that makes everything right in the world – not just in a club at 2am, but waking up the next day, imbued with a fresh outlook on life. Wonderful stuff, and with tracks that include "Brand New Day", "Jungle Fever", "A Better Day", "Tu Y Yo", "Summer Night In Spanish Harlem", "Nos Vida", "Africa/Brasil", "Quimbombo", "Canto Para Chango", and "Sunshine". ✨✧ Lalo SchifrinGillespiana ... CD
Aleph, 1998. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great tribute to Lalo's classic years with Dizzy Gillespie – performed by himself and the WDR Big Band, with players that include Jon Faddis, Paquito D'Rivera, Alex Acuna, and Markus Stockhausen. Faddis handles most of the trumpet parts, and with a style that's different enough from Diz to open the work up nicely – yet still hearken back to the sweet and Latinesque style of the early 60s Gillespie group that included Schifrin. Titles include "Blues", "Panamerica", "Africana", "Tocata", and "Bachianas Brasileiras No 5". CD

Maria Rita (Maria Rita Stumpf)Brasileira ... CD
Selva (Brazil), 1988. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
Not the same Maria Rita that rose to international fame in the past decade or so – but an earlier, much more obscure singer with a nicely rootsy vibe – one whose presence in the Brazilian music scene is maybe more welcome to our ears than her famous later namesake! The album came out at the end of the 80s, but has a sound that feels more like the experimental generation of MPB in the 70s – some moments that have the brashness of Gal Costa around her India album, other moments of gentleness that recall the sensitive soul of Joyce, and maybe a few slight touches of the deeper drama of Maria Bethania – and yet, like all of those artists, this Maria Rita is very much her own person – as can easily be heard by the lack of pop production or commercial efforts on this very unique album. Titles include "Cantico Brasileiro No 1", "Cancao Da Gaora", "Lamento Africano/Rictus", "A Cidade", "Melodia De Veludo", and "Trilhas". CD

✨✧ Orquestra Afro BrasileiraOrquestra Afro Brasileira (180 gram pressing) ... LP
CBS/Polysom (Brazil), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Totally fantastic work from this legendary group – a very early example of African and Brazilian modes crossing together – and served up in a style that's maybe even more hard-hitting than similar projects in more recent years! There's a very percussive sound to the album – as if the group are exploring West African influences on batucada modes – with vocals that lilt and soar over the top, almost with some samba inflections – although some numbers with larger horns and other instruments take on a completely different vibe! The whole thing is fantastic – an example of fresh experimentation that's in the territory of the Afro Sambas project by Baden Powell – with titles that include "Ago Lonan", "Rei N'Aruanda", "Nagana (Senhor)", "Xango". "Os Oinho De Iaia", "Babaloxa", "Tire O Calundu", "Palmares", "India", "Mo-Fi-La-Do-Fe", "Saudacao Aos Orixas", and "Canto Para Omolu". LP, Vinyl record album
