Young-Holt UnlimitedJust A Melody ... LP
Brunswick, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
One of a great run of grooves from the legendary team of bassist Eldee Young and drummer Redd Holt – a smoking batch of instrumentals done in the best Chicago soul style of the time! Young and Holt got their start in the early trio of Ramsey Lewis – but here, they've fully expanded to their "Unlimited" mode with larger backings from Sonny Sanders and Willie Henderson – which often feature a tippling soulful piano out front of some larger Chicago soul charts with a mighty nice groove. The album follows their hit Soulful Strut set, and has a very similar feel – with a mix of instrumental readings of soul hits, and a few sweet originals too. Titles include the standout cut "Young and Holtful", a great cover of "Light My Fire", which has been sampled more than once over the years – and the tracks "When I'm Not Around", "I Wish You Love", "Just A Melody", "Gotta Find Me A Lover", and "Give It Away". Young-Holt UnlimitedSoulful Strut ... LP
Brunswick, Late 60s. Very Good ... $5.99
A funky soul instrumental classic – all the way through! The team of Eldee Young and Redd Holt first came to prominence with Ramsey Lewis' first Chicago trio, then branched out on their own as a jazz act – but by the time of this set, they'd picked up a hipper, funkier late 60s sort of soul groove – and were working with larger backings and a nice deal of extra bass! The pianist in the group is the super-dope Ken Chaney – a player who uses space as much as he uses notes – providing a cool counterpoint to the funky and jazzy riffing of the Young/Holt bass/drum combo. The album includes the landmark track "Soulful Strut" – with tinkling piano over funky backings mixed with sweetened strings – and other tracks include "Funky Is As Funky Does", "Baby Your Light Is Out", "Who's Making Love", "Ain't There Something Money Can't Buy?", "Be By My Side", and "Please Sunrise". A high point in the Chicago soul scene – with backings by Willie Henderson! LP, Vinyl record album

Young-Holt UnlimitedYoung-Holt Unlimited Plays Super Fly ... LP
Paula, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $9.99
Fantastic! Young and Holt lay down a monster set of grooves from Curtis Mayfield's Superfly soundtrack (all the good ones – like "Freddie's Dead", "Give Me Your Love", "Pusher Man", and "Superfly"), and they also get into some funky tracks of their own (like "Hey Pancho" and "Mystical Man"), and do a super-dope cover of "People Make the World Go Round". The album's nice and stripped down – perhaps closest to their Oh Girl LP on Atlantic in feel, with loads of cool electric piano by Ken Chaney, laid out over the group's harder funky grooves! One of their rarest in the original, too – and an essential bit of early G-funk! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Young-Holt UnlimitedSoulful Strut/Country Slicker Joe ... 7-inch
Brunswick, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Massive work from Young Holt Unlimited! "Soulful Strut" is still one of the group's best grooves – a fierce little tune that jogs, jumps, and has some wickedly funky piano – all that, and sampled by the Beasties, too! "Country Slicker Joe" is an LP cut, and has a nice goofy sound to it – but still pretty darn soulful, and in the group's best spirit! 7-inch, Vinyl record
(Gold label pressing in a Brunswick sleeve.)

Red HoltLook Out!! Look Out!! ... LP
Argo, 1961. Very Good ... $29.99
A rare session as a leader from drummer Red Holt – cut at a time when he was making waves with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, and years before his work in Young Holt Unlimited! The record's got a really playful feel that points the way towards directions Holt would take later – a mix of soul jazz and more inventive arrangements that often put his drums at the forefront, and bend most elements of the tunes around the rhythms. Other members of the group are very well matched to follow Red's strong lead – and include regular partners Ramsey Lewis on piano and Eldee Young on bass – plus Floyd Martin on trombone, Roland Faulker on guitar, and the great, but little-known Wallace Burton on alto sax. Titles include "Look Out No 3", "Drum Drunk", "Soul Mist", "Little Liza Jane", and a cool take on "Ghost Riders". LP, Vinyl record album
(Grey label Argo pressing. Cover has a cutout hole, some wear, and aging.)

Redd HoltIt's A Take ... CD
Treehouse, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
The surprising return of drummer Redd Holt – a musician you probably know from his legendary 60s work in the Ramsey Lewis Trio, or as part of the Young Holt Unlimited group with bassist Eldee Young! Ramsey and Eldee aren't on this set, but Redd keeps things in similar trio formation – working with round-toned bassist Ken Haebich, whose groove really suits the drums – and pianist Jim Ryan, who also plays a fair bit of Fender Rhodes – an instrument that always seems to work especially well next to Redd's rhythms! The set's nicely unadorned – more of a jazz effort than Redd's earlier funk and soul material – with titles that include "Killer Joe", "Estate", "Stolen Moments", "On Green Dolphin Street", "Days Of Wine & Roses", and a nice take on the Stevie Wonder classic "Golden Lady". Odell Brown & The Organ-IzersDucky ... LP
Cadet, 1967. Very Good ... $9.99
One of the best of Odell Brown's groovy organ jazz albums for Cadet from the late 60's. His groovy little combo – which features Artee "Duke" Payne on sax, Tommy Purvis on tenor, Phil Upchurch on bass, and Master Henry Gibson on conga – grooves nicely through short "combo" oriented organ cuts like "Get Off My Back", "Mirar, Mirar", "She's Coming My Way", "Tough Tip", and "No More Water In The Well". They play with a mix of funkiness and virtuosity, and with the same sense of humor as contemporary groups like the Jack McDuff quartet or Young-Holt Unlimited. Nice stuff, and one of the harder records to find by them. LP, Vinyl record album

Hysear Don WalkerComplete Expressions ... LP
Brunswick, 1970. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A landmark album of electric piano grooves from Hysear Don Walker – the keyboardist on some of Young-Holt Unlimited's best albums! This album's much more in a jazz vein than some of the Young-Holt titles – with Walker playing electric keys on slower funky numbers that burn along at a sweet Kudu or CTI-styled pace – kicking back and letting the keys really open up as the tunes progress – putting equal emphasis on rhythm and solo space as Walker goes for the groove in an amazing way! All tracks are originals, save for one nicely placed Beatles cover – and titles include "Hydel", "Fat Flower, Skinny Stalk", "Durham Queen", "Inner Face", and "Jade Silhouettes". Brunswick, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic Chicago soul! "Am I The Same Girl" is great great track with a totally catchy hook, and great lyrics by Barbara. And oddly enough, the exact track was stripped of its vocals, given a piano solo, and re-released by Brunswick as "Soulful Strut" by Young-Holt Unlimited! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Lewis ExpressLewis Express ... CD
ATA (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A completely cooking little combo – a contemporary group, but one who've clearly drunk deep from the soul jazz 60s brew of groups like the Ramsey Lewis Trio, Young Holt Unlimited, or even Les McCann LTD! As with all three of those groups (two of which were very tightly related), there's an open sense of rhythm going on here – so that while pianist George Cooper gets in some great gutbuckety licks, the other members of the trip are carving out some really creative grooves – opening things up with rhythms inspired by soul, funk, and hip hop – while still keeping the whole thing in a piano-heavy jazz approach! Some cuts add in a bit of horns, which only furthers the Chess Records vibe here – and titles include "Hawkshaw Philly", "Love Can Turn A Man", "Brother Move On", "Last Man In The Chain Gang", "Theme From The Watcher", "Straight Seven Strut", and "Cancao De Momento" – all original tunes!
