Young-Holt UnlimitedBeat Goes On ... LP
Brunswick/Demon (UK), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... About January 25, 2021 (delayed)
The beat goes on, and just keeps getting better and better too – thanks to the growing sophistication of the Young/Holt duo, once they broke away from Ramsey Lewis! The bass and drums share equal space in the spotlight – and the production has the former really up high in the mix, which makes for a non-stop sort of energy that begins with the group's jazzy roots, but often takes off tighter flights into instrumental funk! And unlike the group's initial trio outing for Brunswick, this album has some great larger arrangements from Sonny Sanders – who brings in lots of excellent funky touches. Titles include a number of strong original instrumentals like "Yon Gimme Thum", "Dig Her Walk", "Baby Your Light Is Out", "Yum Yum", and "Doin' The Thing" – plus covers like "Listen Here", "Good Vibrations", and "The Beat Goes On". ✨✧ Young-Holt UnlimitedMellow Dreamin' ... LP
Cotillion, 1970. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of their wildest and most beautiful LPs! By this point, Young & Holt getting past their usual funky Brunswick sound here, and they've opened up the groove a lot with lots of nice extra bits. The best proof of this is their fantastic take on "Midnight Cowboy", which has an insane breakdown, funky piano, and this cool trumpet line playing counterpoint to the piano. Also includes a bunch of great tracks by piano player Ken Chaney, like "The Creeper" and "Trippin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some creases in the gloss and a cutout notch.)

✨✧ Young-Holt UnlimitedYoung-Holt Unlimited Plays Super Fly ... LP
Paula, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Fantastic! Young and Holt lay down a monster set of grooves from Curtis Mayfield's Superfly soundtrack (all the good ones – like "Freddie's Dead", "Give Me Your Love", "Pusher Man", and "Superfly"), and they also get into some funky tracks of their own (like "Hey Pancho" and "Mystical Man"), and do a super-dope cover of "People Make the World Go Round". The album's nice and stripped down – perhaps closest to their Oh Girl LP on Atlantic in feel, with loads of cool electric piano by Ken Chaney, laid out over the group's harder funky grooves! One of their rarest in the original, too – and an essential bit of early G-funk! LP, Vinyl record album

Chiles & PettifordLive At Jilly's ... LP
Atlantic, 1965. Very Good ... $6.99
Pianist Walter Chiles and bassist Clarend Pettiford were 2 parts ofa smokin' little combo that grooved in the sort of jazz/pop style shared by similar groups like Young Holt Unlimited. Most of the tracks have some vocals, but they're sung in kind of a groovy loungey way, as the trio grooves along in the background. Titles include "The Joker", "Love", "All Gone Over You", and "The Longest Walk". Kind of a mix of soul, jazz, and loungey grooves. LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue & green label pressing. Cover has some wear.)

✨✧ Eric B & RakimDon't Sweat The Technique (2LP version) ... LP
MCA/Universal, 1992. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $23.99 26.99
The fourth and final Eric B & Rakim LP from their classic mid 80s to early 90s run – with some of Rakim's finest rhymes and most devasting delivery to date, and some of Eric B's best production, too! The title track, if course, is a monster – with Rakim's precise rhymes, the furious funky beat, massive soul jazz bass and horn bit culled from Young-Holt Unlimited and Kool & The Gang samples, it'll be a stunner til the end of time – but the record as a whole deserves an eternal shelf life. The end of an incredible era in hip hop. "What's On Your Mind", "Teach The Children", "Pass The Hand Grenade", "Casualties Of War", "Rest Assured", "The Punisher", "Relax With Pep", "Keep The Beat", "What's Going On" and "Kick Along". LP, Vinyl record album
(2LP pressing for better sound!)
