A rare session as a leader from drummer Red Holt
– cut at a time when he was making waves with the Ramsey Lewis Trio, and years before his work in Young Holt Unlimited
! The record's got a really playful feel that points the way towards directions Holt
would take later – a mix of soul jazz and more inventive arrangements that often put his drums at the forefront, and bend most elements of the tunes around the rhythms. Other members of the group are very well matched to follow Red's strong lead – and include regular partners Ramsey Lewis on piano and Eldee Young
on bass – plus Floyd Martin on trombone, Roland Faulker on guitar, and the great, but little-known Wallace Burton on alto sax. Titles include "Look Out No 3", "Drum Drunk", "Soul Mist", "Little Liza Jane", and a cool take on "Ghost Riders".
