Japanese pianist YosukeYamashita cut some fantastic work in Tokyo with his trio during the 70s – but he shines equally brightly here on a German session from the decade, but in a completely different way – given that the whole record just features duets with bassist AdelhardRodinger! Rodinger is great – crafting these rich notes on the bass that are very much in that new mode of the instrument opened up overseas in the generation of Edehard Weber and Miroslav Vitous – and the balance is nice with the freer, often bolder notes of Yamashita on the piano. Yosuke sounds very different here than in his trio – occasionally showing these softer sentiments that are never sleepy, just maybe more personal at times than we might expect – on titles that include "Green Wave", "Soft Waltz", "Tight Pants", and "Country Walk".
