Yes90125 ... CD
Atco, 1983. Used ... $6.99
An album of surprising brilliance – recorded late in the career of Yes, but one of the group's biggest hits ever! And while we've always been fans of Anderson, Squire, & Co, we're also ready to admit that the real star here is Trevor Horn – who produced the album and put the whole thing together with the kind of choppy feel as his best early productions for ZTT, especially work by Art Of Noise. The album's "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" still has a great resonance to our ears as a street-grooving number from the electro years – even despite its chart and radio fame at the time – and other tracks on the album follow in a nicely similar groove. Other titles include "Hold On", "It Can Happen", "Cinema", "Leave It", "Our Song", "City of Love", and "Hearts". CD
(BMG Direct pressing.)

Classic! Fragile is the one that catapulted Yes to unlikely stardom, and in so doing, it brought adventurous, proggy rock to mainstream audience – pretty much changing the face of rock for at least a decade to come! Rick Wakeman's arrival and his spacier electronic keyboards have a lot to do with the Yes ascension, but beyond that that, the songs mix of anthemic, stadium-ready immenseness and trippier, oddball touches makes it a win for both pop/rock fans and prog lovers – win-win! Reverend Sam DixonMy Soul Says Yes ... LP
Samdy/Asherah, Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A gospel record, but one that lets you know that there's something different going on from the very first note – which seems to be the kind of sound you'd expect more from a blacksploitation soundtrack than any kind of album cooked up in a church! That difference hangs on throughout the entire set – which might well rank up there with some of the most soulful gospel albums of all time – a distinction that's even more amazing when you flip over the cover, and realize that some of the members of the group were kids! Yet the album has a much deeper sound than any children's chorus records of the time – and maybe could be seen as a gospel equivalent to the famous Latin album by the Harlem Youth Percussion Ensemble – a set that's equally rare in the original, and equally deep in terms of quality. Titles include "Anyway", "Will You Be Ready", "My Soul Says Yes", "Love Is The Answer", "I'm Prayin", "Don't Let Your Heart Be Troubled", and "Standing Looking Over Jordan". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Matthew HalsallColour Yes (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Gondwana (UK), 2009. New Copy 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
Part of a fantastic legacy in spiritual jazz – music that was almost overlooked at the time, but went on to become the start of both a big wave of new energy on the UK scene of trumpeter Matthew Halsall, and a whole global generation as well! The album is Halsall's second, and follows strongly from the amazing spirit of his debut – done for the Gondwana label with key help from the great Nat Birchall on tenor – a player whose depth is a perfect balance to the measured, spacious tone of Halsall – in a group that also features Adam Fairhall on piano, Gavin Barras on bass, and either Gaz Hughes or Marek Dorcik on drums – plus some especially wonderful harp from Rachael Gladwin on half the album's long tracks. The set is great, with beautifully open sounds – and the titles are all original, and include "Colour Yes", "Together", "I've Found My Joy", "Mudita", "I've Been Here Before", and "Me And You". New edition includes the bonus tracks "Ai" and "It's What We Do". LP, Vinyl record album

Linda HayesYes I Know ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
Wonderful solo work from Linda Hayes – a singer who's maybe best known for her relationship to The Platters in their early years, but a hell of a vocalist on her own – much more soulful than in that famous group, with a quality that almost rivals some of the best female R&B singers on Atlantic and King during the 50s! The work here also has a bit of a west coast spin, too – that mix of jazz, blues, and R&B that was brewing up with some of the cooler, classier singers on the LA scene in the postwar years – on side that Linda recorded for the Hollywood Records label, and af ew other small imprints. This 2CD set is maybe the best we've seen to bring together the music of Hayes – with 35 tracks that include "Take Me Back", "Atomic Baby", "Big City (parts 1 & 2)", "Darling Angel", "I'll Never Love Again", "Hubba Hubba", "I Had A Dream", "Our Love's Forever Blessed", "Non-Cooperation", "No Next Time", "Grrr Mambo", and "Your Back's Out" – plus some cuts with The Platters too! Sound Check (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $5.99 21.95
Maybe not the most exhaustive book on prog genius supergroup Yes – but a volume that does a great job of tracing the evolutions that led to their groundbreaking music at the end of the 60s, and all the many changes it went through in years to come! Author Martin Popoff sets the whole thing up as a timeline – peppered with quotes from long interviews with Jon Anderson, Bill Bruford, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman, and Chris Squire – then structured with some of his own comments as well – all to provide an overview of the group's career, while also letting some of its individual members offer up their specific viewpoints too. 206 pages, softcover, with some images. ✨✧ Dinah ShoreDinah, Yes Indeed! ... LP
Capitol, 1959. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
An overlooked swinger from Dinah Shore – one done for Capitol right at the end of the 50s, with some sublime arrangements by Nelson Riddle! Riddle brings a bounce to the record that Dinah doesn't always get – but without ever making the set gimmicky at all, as with some of her more theme-oriented sides of the 50s. Instead, Riddle matches the maturity of Shore's vocals with some mature charts of his own – schooled in Sinatra, and very well matched to Dinah's modes here. Titles include "Falling In Love With Love", "Yes Indeed", "I'm Old Fashioned", "It All Depends On You", and "Takin A Chance On Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Alicia Hall MoranHere Today ... CD
Yes, 2017. Used ... $5.99
The striking image on the cover is a great indication of what you'll hear within – as singer Alicia Hall Moran opens up and completely reworks music from the American songbook, while also adding in some great compositions of her own! The record features songs you'd normally hear in the voices of Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, and Billie Holiday – but given these very unusual arrangements that use guitar, drums, and light strings – plus some of Alicia's own piano – all to paint a very different version of the world when mixed with Moran's own words and very unusual style. There's a richness here that points the way towards a new spirit of America – one that's there for anyone with the ears to hear it – on titles that include "Round About De Mountain", "We All Just Live In The World", "Two Wings", "Feeling God", "Gold", "God Bless The Child", "Black Wall Street", "Higher", and "Oklahoma Girl". Eric Burdon & The AnimalsWhen I Was Young – The MGM Recordings 1967/1968 (Winds Of Change/Twain Shall Meet/Everyone Of Us/Love Is/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
MGM/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99 65.99
A fantastic package of work from The Animals – all their great second chapter albums for MGM, offered up here with bonus tracks too! First up is Winds Of Change, presented in both stereo and mono mixes – one of The Animals' most psychedelic outings ever – and also a bit funky at times too! Production by Tom Wilson is really great – echoey at most moments, with a kind of "flash" and shimmer around the drums that really spaces things out, and almost gives a Velvets sort of feel to the proceedings. The group's bluesier roots are still in place at times – but these have also been tripped-out and abstracted too, in modes that are a few years ahead of other blues rock combos on the rise. Titles include "It's All Meat", "Winds Of Change", "Poem By The Sea", "Yes I Am Experienced", "Hotel Hell", "San Franciscan Nights", and "Man Woman". Next is Twain Shall Meet – a set that's not as tripped-out as some of their other late 60s work, and which almost starts to show Eric Burdon's rising love of soul and funk! The sound is still pretty rockish overall – but there's some great use of bass rumbling at the bottom – bringing up a rumbling quality that fits nicely with Burdon's somewhat bleak presentation of the lyrics at various points. Production by Tom Wilson almost has a raspy, lo-fi sort of feel – different than the bluesier roots of the group, and almost a precursor of indie work in decades to come! Titles include the classic "Sky Pilot", plus "Monterey", "Just The Thought", "Closer To The Truth", "No Self Pity", "Orange & Red Beams", and "We Love You Lil". Every One Of Us is a real gem from The Animals' overlooked late 60s years on MGM – a time when the group were easily making some of the most inventive music on the label! The styles here are even wider than before – definitely an attempt to showcase "every one of us" that made up the group – in a blend of spacey sounds, gentle folksy moments, and some of the rougher tones of previous MGM records. Many titles were written only by Burdon – a bit of a change from before – and showcase an increased use of acoustic guitar alongside his bleak vocals. Titles include "The Immigrant Lad", "Year Of The Guru", "Serenade To A Sweet Lady", "White Houses", "New York 1963/America 1968", and "Uppers & Downers". Next is Love Is – a fantastic double-length set from The Animals – recorded in LA in the late 60s, and with plenty of great Sunset Strip influences in the mix! The band here is different than before – with Zoot Money handling both organ and piano, plus a bit of vocals, and Andy Summers joining in on guitar – and production is by the group itself, who shake off some of the trippier styles of previous records, and almost go for a "live in studio" sort of sound! There's a confluence of styles here that's really great – some of the blues of the group's roots, bits of Eric Burdon's growing love of soul, and some fuzzier touches as well. Some tracks are quite long jams, and titles include "Gemini", "Madman", "As The Years Go Passing By", "To Love Somebody", and "I'm An Animal". Bonus tracks include "Monterey (mono single)", "White Houses (single stereo)", "Anything (single)", "Gratefully Dead", "Ain't That So", "When I was Young", "A Girl Named Sandoz", "River Deep Mountain High (single stereo)", and "Sky Pilot (parts 1 & 2)", CD

Benny BaileyBig Brass ... CD
Candid/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1960. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
One of the few early albums as a leader cut by trumpeter Benny Bailey – a tremendous talent, finally getting his due! Bailey is one of the great unsung talents of jazz, and he's always made top-shelf work – from his early days with Quincy Jones, to his later years as an American expatriot, recording for European labels like Ego and MPS. This rare early session is one of the few recorded for the super-hip Candid label – and it features Bailey's trumpet at the head of a tight combo that includes Phil Woods on alto sax and bass clarinet, Julius Watkins on French Horn, Les Spann on flute and guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano, and rhythm from Buddy Catlett on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Despite the "big brass" title, there's no horn section here – and instead, most of the numbers have that sharp-edged modern sound we associate with Candid – with Watkins horn being the only other brass instrument, alongside the lighter lines of Woods and Spann. Titles include "Hard Sock Dance", "Tipsy", "Please Say Yes", and "Maud's Mood". CD

Joanne Brackeen & Ryo KawasakiTrinkets & Things ... LP
Timeless (Netherlands), 1978. Sealed ... $24.99
A wonderful little record from pianist Joanne Brackeen – unlike anything the artist ever recorded, as it's just a set of duets with guitarist Ryo Kawasaki, who brings in some really beautiful elements to the mix! Ryo plays an acoustic nylon string guitar, but with a dexterity that most other players would use on electric – and the balance of his instrument with Brackeen's piano is sublime – full of colors and imaginative tones, but also a fair degree of rhythmic impulses too – which guide the duo in ways that are completely refreshing throughout! And yes, Ryo could be slick on other records, but he's definitely not here – and instead finds a special space alongside those choppy blocks of sound that Joanne plays so well. Titles include a great reading of Kawasaki's "Trinkets & Things" – plus "Shadowbrook Air", "Spring Of Things", "Fair Weather", "Whim Within", and "Winnie & Woodstock". LP, Vinyl record album

BuckwheatPure Buckwheat Honey (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Buddah/Big Pink (South Korea), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A really fantastic record from this completely obscure group – one of those lost treasures that slipped through the cracks of record company mishandling, but which really deserves to be discovered after all these many years! Buckwheat are an American group, but clearly draw some inspiration from the phrasing of British groups, and maybe a dash of Sgt Pepper music hall mixed with more psychedelic instrumentation – all handled here by the arrangements of John Corigliano, who you may well know from later fame in more serious music! Here, though, Corigliano does a great job of opening up the whimsy of the group's tunes, and coloring in the lyrics with this really wonderfully wide array of instrumentation, at a level that's way more than you might expect for a lost record like this. Titles include "Goodbye Mr Applegate", "Mr Simms Collector Man", "Yes", "Radio", "The Albert Hotel", "The Poor Widow & Her Gypsy Band", and "Wonderful Day". CD

The overall vibe and instrumentation are unpredictable from one movement to the next, but there's always a hypnotic mood at play, be it spun by sparely furnished strings and percussion, earthy global jazz influences or far spacier dynamics! Titles include a lively (and live sounding) string jazz improvisational take on "What The World Needs Now Is Is Love" with passionate vocals and pared down lyrics by Leisei Chen flavored with violin, viola, cello and sitar – plus "Cosmic Tuning", "Nature", "Ginger", "Say Yes!", "Improvisation Day 1", "Improvisation Day 2", ""Improvisation Day 8", "Cadence Of The Love Messengers" and wonderfully unique take on Donny Hathaway's "Tryin Times" with vocals by Carmen Lundy and Dwight Trible. Harold Butler & The Four CornersButler Did It ! ... CD
17 North Parade/VP, 1978. New Copy ... $7.99 11.98
A real sleeper, pure modern soul and disco niceness wrapped up in an unassuming package! Butler's name may be on the lesser known list of Jamaican keyboardists, and even lesser known on the sweet soul scene, but this amazing set from '78 should go a long way towards correcting that! Butler takes the finest session men in Kingston, a batch of great reggae singers and crafts an album that stands right up next to the best of Leroy Hutson or anything you might hear out of Sigma Sound during the same time period, from the more laidback tracks that wouldn't be out of place on a breezy summertime evening to the more uptempo dance floor oriented numbers. There's one or two cuts that lean towards a rootsy island vibe, but overall this is a smoothly stepping modern outing! 13 tracks in all, including "Long Hot Days In The Summer" with Pam Hall, "Beautiful World" with Prilly Hamilton, "Book Of Life" with Pam Hall & Orville Wood, "Let True Love Be" with Ernest Wilson, "Love Forever" with Cynthis Schloss, "One Step Ahead" with Beres Hammond and Butler's own "Yes Music" and "Symphony To A Friend". A record that might have been a step into cliche for Alice Cooper – but one that still stands surprisingly strong after all these many years! Sure, the Coop as spook-master is very firmly stated on the cover and title – and yes, the record does feature an appearance from Vincent Price – but all the searing intensity of the group at the start is still firmly in place – produced with groundbreaking genius by Bob Erzin, who almost seems to be laying down a blueprint for later generations that run the gamut from metal to goth to post-punk. Titles include "Black Widow", "Welcome To My Nightmare", "Devil's Food", "Department Of Youth", "Cold Ethyl", "Years Ago", "Escape", and "Only Women Bleed". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Doris Day & Andre PrevinDuet ... LP
Columbia, 1962. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Beautiful work from singer Doris Day – and a record that may well be her jazziest for Columbia – thanks to backing from the Andre Previn trio! The pianist is still at the height of his early jazz powers here – able to solo boldly when needed, but almost more equipped as a painter in tonal color – which he uses beautifully to emphasize all the right emotive currents in Day's vocals. The approach is great – quite sophisticated, and almost at the level of a Chris Connor record at times – and very different than the Doris you might expect from her comedic films of the time. Yet that sense of surprise is also what always made her one of the secret sexy stars of her generation – as comes through beautifully on tunes that include "Yes", "Close Your Eyes", "Remind Me", "Daydreaming", "Give Me Time", and "Nobody's Heart". Mokomizik (UK), Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 45.99
A wonderful little record, and one that certainly lives up to the "fantastic variety" promise of its title! The set features work from Panamanian pianist Alonso Wilson De Briano – and although you'll see the word "calypso" in the title, the overall sound is maybe more like Cuban jazz of the time – heavy on Latin percussion, and touched with fantastic piano solos alongside the vocals – very sophisticated in sonic construction, but always rhythmic and grooving too! Some tunes have heavier horns, a few moments feel like descarga numbers, and the whole thing's great – with titles that include "My Brother Too", "San Miguel", "Carilimpia", "Tu Unico Amor", "Muchacha", "Windsor", "Me Voy A Panama", "Never Never", and "Lucky Yes I Am". Willie EganRockin On The West Coast ... CD
Jasmine (UK), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Really fantastic work from Willie Egan – a west coast singer from the glory days of R&B on that side of the country, and one you might know best from his work in the duo of Marvin & Johnny! And yes, that's a pretty obscure duo, but an important one in the pre-soul years – presented here next to some of Willie's work in a variety of settings – his own band, in the duo of Lloyd & Willie, and a few other groups – all to finally give Egan the kind of attention he deserves! Like so many of his contemporaries, Willie has roots in the south, but really shone when he hit the scene in LA – working with modern styles that begin with jump blues, and move to early soul and vocal group styles too – served up here on some very obscure singles for labels that include Mambo, Dash, and Vita. The set features 30 tracks in all, including many original tunes by Egan – with songs that include "Potato Stomp", "You Must Be Foolin", "Second Helping Of Cherry Pie", "Baby Baby Baby", "Wear Your Black Dress", "I Can't Understand It", "Sad Sad Feeling", "You Upset Me Baby", "Wow Wow", "What A Shame", "Sad Sad Feeling", and "Chittlins". Jose FelicianoThat The Spirit Needs/Memphis Menu/Compartments (DISC 2 ONLY) ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), 1971/1973. Used ... $6.99
A trio of wonderful albums from Jose Feliciano – all brought together here in a single set! First up is That The Spirit Needs – a sublime one from Jose! The record pushes past the easy Latin pop style of the late 60s, and features Jose working through hip rock tunes – both of his own creation, and by writers like Elton John and Cat Stevens. The real highlight of the album is an incredible reading of "Wild World" – done with a mix of fast guitar, strings, and even a bit of Brazilian-tinged scatting that breaks down in the middle and always makes us stop cold! The rest of the record's almost as good, and titles include "Daytime Dreams", "Mellow Feeling", "Come Down Jesus", "Pay Day", and "Only Once". Memphis Menue is an excellent album from Jose Feliciano – recorded with a lot of Memphis soul influences, as the title indicates, but still with that beautifullly jazzy style that he was using in his earlier LA recordings. Steve Cropper helped produced and arrange with Jose, and the Memphis Horns back up the group on a number of tracks. The real charm, though, is Jose – whose breezy vocals and sweet guitar work is right up there with his best work of the time, a sublime mix of soul, strings, jazz, and Chicano grooves. Titles include "River Song", "Magnolia", "One More Mile", "Never Leave You", "It Doesn't Matter", "Where Is My Woman", and "Movin". Compartments is sparklingly soulful work from Jose Feliciano – a key early 70s effort, and one that shows the growing sensitivity in his music – the move way past simple covers of other people's songs, even though those were pretty great too! Jose's voice has gotten even more compelling in the process, and he's also developing a bit as a songwriter too – most notably on the album's title track, which was co-written with Bill Withers. Steve Cropper helped produce, but the album's way more in Jose's bag than Cropper's – and titles include a great version of "Yes We Can Can", plus "Simple Song", "Compartments", "Sea Cruise", "I'm Leavin", "Things Are Changin", "Peace Of Mind", "Hey Look At The Sun", and "Don't Fail". Birth/Bonfire (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... About June 10, 2022
The lone, wonderful album by early 70s UK chanteuse Christine Harwood – a batch of soulful, sophisticated post folk groove backed by a great group of players – with wonderfully sultry vocals from Christine and a lightly funky sound! Christine was reportedly a young teenager when these tracks were recorded with a incredible group that shared players with incarnations of Joe Cocker's band, Yes, and others – with production by Miki Dallon. The sound is in a very free spirit, with jazzy and really rich arrangements steeped in Hammond organ, cleanly funky bass, strings and some flute. Originally released in the early 70s on the Birth label, it's been resurrected by the deep-digging Finders Keepers – with a handful of unreleased gems from the sessions. A real treasure! Horns don't always dominate – and the energy of the record still seems to come from the trio formation – but the added instrumentation definitely changes things up strongly, and really seems to push the sound a lot too. Warner, 1970. Very Good ... $9.99
The jury is sometimes out on the Mick Jagger on-screen performance in the Nicolas Roeg film Performance – but the soundtrack is something pretty separate entirely, and really says a lot more about the spirit of late 60s Warner Brothers Records in LA than it does the arthouse cinema scene in England! The great Jack Nitzsche composed a number of instrumental tracks for the score – maybe his first time in this mode, and prefacing some later 70s successes to come – with titles that include "Rolls Royce & Acid", "Harry Flowers", and "Natural Magic". Other Warner talents get a hand in the music too – as Randy Newman conducted all of Nitzsche's charts, and also sings "Gone Dead Train" – while Ry Cooder delivers bottleneck solos on "Get Away" and "Powis Square". There's also some nice soul-based moments – the cut "Wake Up N*ggers" by The Last Poets, and "Poor White Hound Dog" and "Performance" by Merry Clayton. And yes, Mick does get to sing on one tune – the album's "Memo From Turner" – and the set is completed by Buffy St Marie work on "The Hashishin" and "Dead Dead Red". LP, Vinyl record album

PleasureAccept No Substitutes ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1976. New Copy ... $7.99 14.99
Quite possibly the funkiest album ever from Pleasure – and that's saying a heck of a lot! The album grooves from the very first note – and moves through some of the group's tightest, most rock-solid numbers – all of which use their trademark blend of funky and soul, but which somehow seem to hit even more perfect territory than previous albums! And yes, those records are great, but usually have a few standout cuts – while this one works together perfectly – leading us in right away, then holding us rapt through some wonderful cuts that never let up – massive energy that few other funky combos could match, produced to perfection by the legendary Wayne Henderson. Titles include the wicked sample cut "I'm Mad", the bouncy "Pleasure For Your Pleasure", the spacey "Ghettos Of The Mind", the bumping "Let's Dance", and the tracks "Jammin With Pleasure", "Theme For The Moonchild", "2 For 1", "We Have So Much", and "The Love Of My Life". Blue Thumb, 1973. Sealed ... $9.99
The fantastic debut of The Pointer Sisters – an album that's a lot deeper than most of their crossover pop from years to come! At the time of the album's release, the trio were a badass group of female singers on the Bay Area scene – out to redefine the role of the girl group in soul – working not only with righteous power that was a real change from modes of the 60s – but also this trans-temporal quality that had them reaching back with ease for references from decades past, which also includes a surprising amount of jazz! The highlight here is the group's classic funky break version of Allen Toussaint's "Yes We Can Can" – and other titles include "Naked Food", "Wang Dang Doodle", "Sugar", "Pains & Tears", "Jada", "River Boulevard", and "Cloudburst". A landmark French avant session from the start of the 70s – and one of the most bracingly brilliant albums ever recorded by saxophonist Michel Portal! Portal's paired here with British reedman John Surman – and the duo play some amazingly complex lines on the date – very freewheeling, but not entirely without structure – as Portal handles alto sax and bass clarinet, and Surman blows soprano, baritone, and bass clarinet as well. Other group members include Barre Phillips on bass, Stu Martin on drums, and Jean-Pierre Drouet on percussion – and the use of two percussion players, without piano, makes for a very unique quality to the record. Titles include "Oo Bam Ba Deep", "Ca Boom?", "Undercurrent", "Yes, Oh Yes, You Wonderful Sun Kissed Maiden", and "Y En A Marre". LP, Vinyl record album

ShoesElektrafied – The Elektra Years 1979 to 1982 (Present Tense/Tongue Twister/Boomerang/rarities) (4CD set) ... CD
Elektra/Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99
Three classic albums from Shoes, plus bonus tracks, and a full CD worth of rare material too! First up is Present Tense – a power-pop classic from Shoes – their first full length for Elektra Records, and a set that stands with all the best end of 70s gems from either coast! The songs are impeccable, and the group do a fantastic job of blending sharper guitars with really great lyricism – a mode that maybe makes the Illinois group a strong precursor for territory that The Replacements wouldn't hit until many years later – and which makes just about every track on the album a precious nugget that just gets better and better with time! Titles include "Now & Then", "Every Girl", "I Don't Wanna Hear It", "Three Times", "In My Arms Again", and "Too Late". On Tongue Twister, Shoes continue the brilliance of their first album for Elektra – serving up the kind of music that was so well-done, so subtle, it was maybe missed by most of the world at the time – even though it's gone onto the status of classic, thanks to legions of fans and critics! Shoes have a way with a tune that's unlike anyone else – maybe that compressed charm of Big Star, but fused into the sharper modes of the power pop years – but without any of the too commercial modes of some of the bigger groups of the time. Instead, the whole thing feels like you've just stumbled upon a brilliant band, playing in a backroom bar – which, unfortunately, is how Shoes spent too much of their career. Titles include "Only In My Sleep", "She Satisfies", "Found A Girl", "Hate To Run", "When It Hits", "Yes Or No", "Your Imagination", and "Girls Of Today". On Boomerang, Shoes maybe look a bit too new wave on the cover, but still sound perfect within – very much in charge of that perfect yet understated approach to a tune that has gone on to make them legends in all the many years since this album was released! The group were never out to change the world, and maybe that held them back at the time – but they were also never trying for big chart success, or too-slick modes – and there's a wonderfully honest, down to earth approach to the songwriting and production that clearly sets the stage for all the bigger late 80s groups that would follow in their wake. Nearly every tune is a completely catchy mofo – and titles include "Curiosity", "In Her Shadow", "Double Talk", "The Summer Rain", "Under The Gun", "The Tube", and "What Love Means". 4CD set features a huge amount of bonus material – 8 track demo versions of all three albums, added to their discs – and a bonus CD of 18 more rare tracks – all in a box, with a big booklet of notes! Blue Note, 1964. Used ... $5.99
Genius, pure genius! Like all of Wayne Shorter's Blue Note sessions from the mid 60s, this album's a beautiful blend of hard bop ideas with a modern spiritual soulful consciousness – as important in its own way as Coltrane's work of the time – an incredible precursor for sounds from generations to come! Shorter's tenor solos are the main focus here, and he plays with creativity and imagination that you don't often hear on his later works – a sharp, soulful approach – but one that's already light years ahead of some of his Blue Note contemporaries – reaching for new ideas, but without any sense of effort – none of the overly-tense notes you'd get later, and instead just a marvelously fluid feel that really makes sense from the very first note – tremendous listening for both the lifetime jazz fan or the newcomer. McCoy Tyner plays piano, and Reggie Workman and Elvin Jones complete the group – and titles include "House Of Jade", "Deluge", "Mahjong", and "Yes Or No". The album's got a vibe that's very much like the best Yes records of the early days – including Fragile, Close To The Edge, and Yes – and the changes and sharpness of the tunes are mindblowing – driven strongly by Squire's bass, and filled with fantastic touches from Bill Bruford on drums, Patrick Moraz on keyboards, and some especially great work on saxes from Mel Collins – who you might know from work with King Crimson. Chris also sings, and sounds pretty darn wonderful – with a bit of processing that expands his voice a bit, almost in Jon Anderson modes. People/Universal (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $13.99 About June 22, 2022
A supremely fantastic album, and one that's always woefully overlooked in discussions of James Brown's incredible People label! Sweet Charles, Charles Sherell, was a great lost soul vocalist who had a voice that was warm and mellow, with a sweetness that was often missing from James' singing – but which sounded great with his arrangements and production. Fred Wesley and Dave Matthews arranged this one and only album, and the record's a great blend of sweet soul tracks, funky numbers, and other stellar grooves. There's a killer version of "Soul Man", that begins with a very tasty break; the monster "Yes, It's You", which has a sweetly sliding intro that's ripe for sampling; the righteous political "Why Can't I Be Treated Like A Man" – and lots of other nice ones too! British music breaking through – served up here in a set of sounds that really reflect the massive musical year of 1971! A great set of groovers from the Cameo/Parkway label – a company that gave the world the biggest twist record of the 60s, but which also was perfectly poised to deliver all sorts of other upbeat tracks as well! The label was in Philly – a huge dance town in the early days of soul and rock – and the set list here is filled with the kind of cuts that were Philadelphia's answer to the rising sound of Motown – the roots of the Northern Soul sound that would be followed by soul collectors for decades! These aren't novelty hits, but upbeat cuts that groove plenty – most by soul artists, a few by pop singers – but all given the kind of tight instrumentation and strong studio handling that made the Philly scene such a standout. 22 tracks in all – including "Shimmy Shimmy" and "The Wah Watusi" by The Orlons, "Bristol Stomp" and "You Can't Sit Down" by the Dovells, "Mashed Potato Time" and "Do The Bird" by Dee Dee Sharp, "The 81" by Candy & The Kisses, "The Mash" by Tony Young & The Hippies, "Mexican Hat Rock" by The Applejacks, "Baby Do The Frog" by The Dardenelles, "The Swim (part 1)" by The Marlins, "Slow Twistin" by Chubby Checker & Dee Dee Sharp, "The Third House" by Bobby Rydell, "When You Dance" by The Turbans, "Everybody South Street" by The Taffys, "The Popeye Waddle" by Don Covay, and yes, "The Twist" by Chubby Checker. Colpix/EMI (Japan), 1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure Jazz Messengers session – but a great one! The album is ostensibly a set of jazz versions of tunes from the musical Golden Boy, and the group this time is a larger one than usual – a total of 10 players, led by Blakey – and playing beautifully over arrangements from Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, and Cedar Walton! The style's not any sort of clunky "jazz meets Broadway" mode, though – as the care taken by the artists involved help elevate the tunes, and the performance, to a whole new soulful level – hardly what you'd expect! The group features trumpet work from Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, tenor from Wayne Shorter, alto from James Spaulding, trombone from Curtis Fuller, baritone from Charles Davis, piano from Cedar Walton, and bass from Reggie Workman – all very hip cats, working here with the same sort of large group textures you might hear on Freddie Hubbard's Body & Soul album from the same time, mixed with some more traditionally Blakey-led moments. EmArcy, 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A tribute to Billie Holiday, but one that's way different than the usual – as you'd probably guess from the image of Dee Dee Bridgewater on the cover! Yes, the tunes are numbers that Billie sang back in the day, and yes, there's a certain Holiday-like tinge in Bridgewater's vocals – but the arrangements are decidedly fresh and modern, handled by Edsel Gomez, who plays piano in the album's small combo with Christian McBride on bass, Lewis Nash on drums, and James Carter on tenor, soprano sax, and bass clarinet. The whole thing's as hip as can be – easily on a par with some of Dee Dee's best records ever – which is great, as she could have easily rested on her laurels doing a more standard copy of Billie Holiday's style. Gomez brings in lots of great rhythms to groove up some of the tunes – and titles include "All Of Me", "Lover Man", "Strange Fruit", "Mother's Son In Law", "Fine & Mellow", "You've Changed", and "Miss Brown To You".
