InoyamalandDanzindan-Pojidon ... LP
Yen/WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Japanese electronic ambient at its best – a set of tracks created by Yasushi Yamashita and Makoko Inoue, and done in a way that's an effortless combination of natural impulses and computer technology! The tunes are very slow-moving and beautiful – unfolding like little flowers, and although mostly electronic, using aspects of the instruments that often replicate acoustic sources – especially in the woodwind side of the spectrum. Titles include "Apple Star", "Shuffer", "Glass Chime", "Wasser", "Collecting Net", and "Mizue". LP, Vinyl record album

Orchestra BaobabMouhamadou Bamba ... LP
Syllart (France), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A classic album from the best years of Orchestra Baobab – a time when the group were maybe the greatest thing coming out of Dakar, and really helping to move a whole generation of West African sounds forward into new directions! The instrumentation is still relatively old school – no drum programs or beats, just this fantastic blend of quick guitar lines, tenor sax, and plenty of percussion – all topped by back/forth vocals from members of the group, but with an energy that's maybe thinking more globally than locally, with a really wonderful spirit throughout. Titles include "Yen Saay", "Gnawoe", "Doomou Baaye", "Boulmamine", "Mouhamadou Bamba", and "Ndiawolou". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousSound of Siam – Leftfield Luk Thung, Jazz & Molam From Thailand 1964 to 1975 ... CD
Soundway (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $29.99
The far reaching sounds of Thailand from the mid 60s to mid 70s – from spaced out, pulpy jazz & funk, to eclectic luk thang with Latin and psychedelic rock influences, to melodic north east Thai molam – an impeccably well chosen and beautiful sounding rarities put together by the great Soundway label! All of the material appeared on vinyl LPs and 45s from the era, and the recorded quality is excellent throughout. Amazing, eye-opening Thai music on Soundway – a label that's nearly unrivaled in it's way of carefully and respectfully putting together global music of historical and cultural importance, but doing so with a hip sense of fun and adventure, dispensing with dry academia all together. Perfection! Includes "Lam Tung Wai" and "Lam Toey Chaweewan" by Chaweewan Dumnern, "Mae Kha Som Tam" by Onuma Singsiri, "Fai Yen" by Ream Daranoi, "Sao Ban Pok Pab" by Panom Nopporn, "Mae Jom Ka Lon" by Dao Bandon, "Kai Tom Yum" by Kawaw Siang Thong, "Pleng Yuk Owakard" by The Viking Combo Band" and more. 19 tracks in all. ✨✧ Gus MancusoGus Mancuso & Friends (Introducing Gus Mancuso/Music From New Faces) ... CD
Fantasy, 1956/1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Gus Mancuso was a 50s instrumentalist who made a brief but strong flash on the modern scene – playing one of the most unlikely jazz instruments ever, a euphonium, which he handled with surprising dexterity and grace, creating a bass-heavy sound that was not unlike some of the work done on baritone during the decade. This 18 track CD features tunes from two of Mancuso's earliest (and only) albums as a leader – Introducing Gus Mancuso and Music From New Faces. The first set features Mancuso blowing hard in a group with Cal Tjader, Richie Kamuca, Eddie Duran, and Vince Guaraldi – and the second set features him working through titles from the show New Faces. Tracks include "The Ruble & The Yen", "Brother Anitz", "Ev'ry Time", "How Do You Like Your Eggs In The Morning?", "A Hatful Of Dandruff", and "Scratch My Back". CD

✨✧ K Frimpong & Super Complex SoundsAhyewa Special ... LP
Ofori Brothers/Hot Casa (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The sublime first album from K Frimpong – a really unique blend of hi-life and Afro Funk, but served up with all these unusual touches that make the album stand out from even most of the rest of the revolutionary sounds that were coming from Ghana at the time! There's this sense of flow that has each side of the record moving with non-stop energy – and an approach to rhythm that's almost as if the whole thing was moving forward like water – a tide of bass, percussion, riffing guitar, and organ – bubbling, dipping, and chugging in a way that seems completely effortless – while Frimpong urges the group on with his well-inflected vocals and lead guitar! Titles include "Nana Bue Me", "Mofofoo", "Komofo Adu", "Otwie", "Osaw", "M"Anoma", "Moma Yen Sore", and "Susuansu". LP, Vinyl record album

Laughing HyenasMerry Go Round ... LP
Touch & Go, Mid 80s. Near Mint- ... $39.99
Stunning debut EP by Laughing Hyenas – some of the fiercest underground rock ever to come out of the state of Michigan! Even at this early point, there's a brooding, postpunk bluesy vibe at times, but the most fiery quality here is John Brannon's vocals – a seriously throat-shredding instrument that makes even the moodier tracks pretty incendiary. The band makes one hell of a caterwauling roar at their most intense, but they're capable of a moodier sound, too, even at this early point. Includes "Stain", "Hell's Kitchen", "That Girl", "Gabriel", "Play Ground", and "What Tomorrow Brings". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hailu MergiaYene Mircha ... LP
Awesome Tapes From Africa, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
A great new recording from Hailu Mergia – the Ethiopian keyboardist who's given us some great records over the years! This set has Hailu working on both of his strengths – using keyboards in the lead on some tracks, accordion on others – plus a bit of melodica, and just a slight amount of vocalizations – all at a level that's a really wonderful update of older Ethio-jazz styles, but with a vibe that's much more laidback and relaxed! Some of the younger artists in this scene are maybe a bit more tied to the styles of the golden years – but Hailu instead just uses bass and drums for support, and expands with a warmly jazzy current that still echoes plenty of the best elements of his older albums. Titles include "Semen Ena Debub", "Yene Mircha", "Bayine Lay Yihedal", "Shemedefer", "Yene Abeba", and "Abichu Nega Nega". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary CrosbyGary Crosby – Orchestra Conducted By Bud Shank ... LP
World Pacific, 1957. Very Good ... $14.99
A strange little record, but one with more of a jazz component than you might think! Gary's the son of Bing, natch – and he's following here in his pop's footsteps, singing jazz standards with backing conducted by Bud Shank. The interesting thing is that the session was actually recorded in Germany – and the group features some hip Europeans, like Roland Kovac on piano, Atilla Zoller on guitar, Jerry Van Rooyen on trumpet, and Hans Koller on tenor. Shank plays as well – and titles include "Blue Prelude", "Exactly Like You", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "One For My Baby", and "Love Is Just Around The Corner". LP, Vinyl record album

Wessel Ilcken, Tony Vos, Rob Madna, & OthersJazz Behind The Dikes 2 (180 gram white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Philips/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1955. New Copy ... $26.99
A treasure trove of rare jazz work from the Dutch scene of the 50s – initially overlooked by many American listeners of the time, but fortunately well-documented by this series from Philips! The music here is a nice mix of different combos – all drawing influence from bop and some of the west coast modern modes, with a vibe that's a bit like some of the Swedish groups of the period – no surprise, as the Dutch scene was every bit as fully-formed as some of the jazz world farther north! Two tracks feature singer Rita Reys joining the combo of drummer Wessel Ilcken, who also play on their own too – with work from the great Toon Van Vliet on tenor, Rob Madna on piano, and Gerard Van Rooyen on trumpet. And the set also features a few tracks by other groups too – the septet of baritone saxophonist Herman Schoonderwalt, with Tony Vos on alto and Flip Van Glabbeek on tenor; the quartet of alto saxophonist Tony Vos, with Henk Vos on piano; the trio of pianist Rob Madna, with Wessel Ilcken on drums; and the quartet of pianist Frans Elsen, with Robby Pauwels on guitar and Cees See on drums. ✨✧ Jankowski SingersFor Night People Only ... LP
MPS, 1970. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
Moody vocals from the Jankowski Singers – a hip ensemble led by pianist Horst Jankowski, with a floating dreamy sound that's very much in the best MPS easy mode! The tracks on the set are as haunting as the "nightpeople" in the title might imply – harmonic, yet slightly off-kilter – and easy, yet with an undercurrent of 70s slink that makes everything feel a bit stranger than it otherwise might. The title track – "Nightpeople Only" – is a real gem, and worth the price of the record alone – but the rest of the set is pretty wonderful too, with a cool blend of male/female chorus vocals, Jankowski's piano and keyboards, and some sweetly compressed flugelhorn solos from Ack Van Rooyen. Other tracks include "Didn't We", "Let's Make A Day", "With Two Eyes", "Light My Fire", and "Lady Eve". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Red Rodney & Ira SullivanSpirit Within ... LP
Elektra, 1982. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Really beautiful work from the team of Red Rodney and Ira Sullivan – hardly the sort of stuff we might have heard from the players a decade or two before – and a sophisticated batch of tunes that has them stretching out in rich musical directions! There's little of the boppish roots of either player here – and instead, the album mostly features inspiring jazz compositions from Garry Dial – the pianist in the group, and a real genius with color, tone, and timing. Dial's tunes dominate most of the record, and they really set the group on a great footing – horn trading between Rodney's trumpet and Sullivan's soprano, flute, and flugelhorn – supported with complicated changes from the core rhythm trio. Titles include "Spirit Within", "King Of France", "Sophisticated Yenta", "Crescent City", and "Monday's Dance". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rob PronkBebop Years – Studio Sessions 1950 to 1957 ... CD
Dutch Jazz Archive (Netherlands), Mid 50s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Overlooked genius from the Dutch jazz scene of the postwar years – a set of small combo dates that feature trumpeter Rob Pronk, including two groups led by American players too! Pronk's got a tone that's clear, but never too clean – maybe the focused brightness of the young Howard McGhee, mixed with some of the richer feeling of the young Kenny Dorham – almost always matched here by great tenor work, which makes the tracks an equally strong delight! Players include Harry Verbecke, Toon Van Vilet, and Ruud Brink on tenor sax – plus Herman Schoonderwalt on alto, Rob Madna on piano, Ack Van Rooyen and Jerry Van Rooyen on trumpets, and Ruud Pronk and Cees Slinger on drums – and the set then also features an unusual twist – as Pronk steps over to piano, and works in one group with Ake Persson and Frank Rosolino on trombones, and another with Zoot Sims on tenor. There's a huge amount of music here to discover – and the presentation and recording quality is superb – on titles that include "Latecomer", "Four Roses", "Jack's Wax", "Blue Monk", "Funkerin", "Tune", "Sassy", "Minor", "Corner Pocket", and "Monotones". ✨✧ VariousHeavenly Ethiopiques – The Best Of The Ethiopiques Series ... LP
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The definitely got the title right on this one – because the set is filled with some of the most heavenly tracks from the legendary Ethiopiques series – that legendary run of compilations that was the first introduction for most of us to the amazing music of Ethiopia! This package really zeros in on all the best bits – and has a special focus on the early 70s, with some other bits from the 60s as well – all the wonderful vintage material that captures that special time in Ethiopian music when the artists were really taking some new chances with their sound – and creating an otherworldly blend of jazz and funk with more local elements as well. The range of artists is great – a really compelling blend of singers and instrumentalists, not just a handful of tracks by Mulatu – and titles include "Presentiment" by Tsegue Maryam Guebrou, "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" by Girma Beyene, "Hedetch Alu" by Muluquen Mellesse, "Lantchi Biye" by Tlahoun Gessesse, "Tchereqa" by Menelik Wesnatchew, "Ashasha Beyew" by Abbebe Tessemma, "Ati Fettun Isani Infedhani" by Ali Birra, "Mela Mela" by Seyfou Yohannes, "Teredjew Neber" by Ayalew Mesfin, and "Hametegnaw" by Seyoum Gebreyes. ✨✧ VariousMore Ethiopian Soul & Groove – Ethiopian Urban Modern Music Vol 3 (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Buda/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mad music that's unlike anything else we can think of – a killer collection of funky grooves from the Ethiopian scene of the 70s – offered up here on a vinyl-only compilation! The set's a great one if you've heard the music of Mulatu, but want to dig a lot deeper – as the cats included on this set are most of his contemporaries from the golden years of Ethiopian music – and most of them work in a similar offbeat, other-worldly sort of style! Rhythms are skittish, horns are hypnotic, and the vocals on some of the tracks have a weird appeal that really transcends the boundaries of language – almost like another instrumental element that fits in wonderfully with the heavy grooves underneath. Titles on the collection are pulled from various volumes of the Ethiopiques series – making this set kind of a distillation of all its greatness. Tracks include "Yebeqagnal" and "Ene Negn Bay Manesh" by Girma Beyene, "Queresh Endewaza" by Samuel Belay, "Ewnetegna Feqer" by Hirut Bequele, "Lomiwen Teqebeletch" by Mahmoud Ahmed, "Gedamay" by Getatchew Mekurya, and "Metche New" by Asselefetch Ashine & Getenesh Kebret. ✨✧ VariousRight Back Where We Started From – Female Pop & Soul In Seventies Britain (3CD set) ... CD
RPM (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A totally great look at the role of the female singer in mid 70s England – a role that's a bit of an evolution from the UK pop styles of the 60s – soaring forth in a great mix of rock, vocal, and soul-based modes! Some of the singers are names that you'd recognize from the initial female pop wave that broke big from British shores in the 60s, mixed here with younger artists, and even a few Americans who made the scene overseas, then scored some surprising hits – all in a really great range of very groovy styles! Most work is from the years before punk, and as with other of these excellent 3CD sets on RPM, not only is the set list superb, but the whole thing comes with fantastic notes that really illuminate all the many artists in the package – a lineup that features 77 tracks by Samantha Jones, Carol Woods, Milly Scott, Sweetcorn, Flirts, Jo Anne Love, Tommi, Doris Duke, The Big Spenders, Madeline Bell, Margie Miller, Julie Rogers, Carol Hunter, Linda Kendrick, Millicent Martin, Val McKenna, Maxine Nightingale, Linda Rothwell, Honeyend, Ruth Swann, and many others. Heck, the whole thing might be worth it enough for the version of Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man" sung by Eartha Kitt! CD

✨✧ Ebo TaylorLife Stories – Highlife & Afrobeat Classics 1973 to 1980 ... LP
Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Great Ghana grooves from Ebo Taylor – a tremendous collection of his funkiest 70s work – and a much-needed reintroduction of his talents to the world at large! Much of the music here has strong links with more familiar Afro Funk – but the overall approach is often a bit unique, too – lots more guitar in the rhythms at times, in ways that echo the lighter lyricism of highlife, yet all without losing the commitment to bottom sounds that made 70s changes in African music so great! The package does a great job of archaeology – bringing together not just cuts recorded under Taylor's own name, but also work with other groups too – all in a set that offers plenty in the way of notes and historical details, too. 2LP set features 12 titles that include "Heaven", "Aba Yaa", "Atwer Abroba", and "Peace On Earth" by Ebo Taylor, "Tamfo Nyi Akyir" by Apagya Showband, "Ohiani Sua Efir" by Asasse Ase, "Ene Nyame Nam A Mensuor" by Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor, "Egya Edu" by Ebo Taylor & The Pelikans, and "Love & Death" by Ebo Taylor & Uhuru Yenzu. Folkways, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A beautiful little record – one that features cascading tones from the strings of the kora, mixed with occasional vocal moments too! The album was recorded in Dakar and Brikama in the mid 70s – and is maybe the start of a great run of later sessions that found a way of taking this amazing instrument to a wider audience – opening up the ringing, many-stringed tones of the kora with fidelity that really lives up to the tonal complexities of well-played performances like these. Some of the songs are quite long, and have a very hypnotic vibe – and titles include "Tutu Jara", "Sutukung Kumbu Sora & Solo", "Darisalami Amad Fal", and "Yeyengo High Life Tune". Comb & Razor, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Not the usual sort of Nigerian sounds you'd hear on a collection focused on Lagos – and instead, music that was recorded far from the central city of the nation – often with a much rootsier vibe overall! These tunes still have plenty of funk and jazz in the mix, but they often come across with a more freewheeling, collaborative vibe – as if you've stumbled upon a group jamming in some back alley spot, really enjoying each others' company while they create some magical music. The set is maybe the most thoughtful we've seen so far from the excellent Comb & Razor label – and titles include "Mbre Isong" by Isadico Dance Band Of Nigeria, "Akam Itoro Abasi" by Mansion, "Eyong Erong Uwa" by The Visitors, "Atak Mfat Eyen" by Sunny Risky & The Vitamin Explosion, "Akwa Idim" by Sea Lions, "Suk Usan Idang" by Charles Duke, "Akananwan Isong Idung" by Monica Isaac, and "Eseme Ikpong" by Chief Inyang Henshaw & His Top Ten Aces.
