Bo CarterBanana In Your Fruit Basket – Red Hot Blues 1931 to 1936 ... LP
Yazoo, Mid 1930s. New Copy ... $26.99 28.99
The cover's a striking one – and it definitely supports the music inside, given that most of these Bo Carter tunes are vintage blues tunes with a decidedly erotic bent! The metaphors are obvious, but they're put together beautifully – without any of the heavy-handed schlock that later copycats would never get quite right – and set to spare acoustic lines that complement Carter's vocals wonderfully. And in a case where a title is definitely more than enough to get you started – let us say simply that the tracks include "Pig Meat Is What I Crave", "What Kind Of Scent Is This", "Mashin That Thing", "Pin In Your Cushion", "Ram Rod Daddy", "Ants In My Pants", "Pussy Cat Blues", and "My Pencil Won't Write No More". ✨✧ Furry LewisFurry Lewis In His Prime 1927 to 1928 ... LP
Yazoo, 1927/1928. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two years might be a short time for any artist to be in their "prime" – but the quality of these sides is so strong, they've supported the reputation of Furry Lewis for many many years! The set features wonderful low-key material recorded for 78s in the years 1927 and 1928 – all with Lewis on acoustic guitar, but working with an even greater emphasis on his voice – which has all these amazing inflections that so many other singers would copy over the years. Titles include Furry's classic two part "Kassie Jones" – plus "Jellyroll", "Why Don't You Come Home Blues", "Good Looking Girl Blues", "Mistreatin Mama", "Furry's Blues", "I Will Turn Your Money Green", and "Cannonball Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Casey Bill Weldon/Kokomo ArnoldBottleneck Guitar Trend Setters Of The 1930s ... CD
Yazoo, Mid 30s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great document of an amazing blues tradition – bottleneck guitar, offered up here in a host of original 78s from the 30s! The style is one that was co-opted often in later years, but is presented here at its roots – with a nice, gritty feel overall – and use of the mode that's still pretty darn fresh, and free of cliche. Side one features tracks by Casey Bill Weldon – including "Hitch Me To Your Buggy", "Back Door Blues", "Lady Doctor Blues", "The Big Boat", and "Go Ahead Buddy" – and side two features cuts by Kokomo Arnold, including "Salty Dog", "Feels So Good", "Busy Bootin", "The Twelves", and "I'll Be Up Someday". Great Robert Crumb cover – and the usual detailed Yazoo notes! CD
(Booklet has some light wear.)

✨✧ Robert WilkinsOriginal Rolling Stone ... CD
Yazoo, Late 20s/Early 30s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Robert Wilkins may not have been one of the biggest blues singers on the Memphis scene at the end of the 20s, but he was certainly one of the best – and a vocalist with a really amazing approach that predates countless other singers to come! Wilkins has this sense of vibrato that really makes for some haunting music here – a drawn-out way of holding onto a word that may well give things a slight country twang, even though the presentation is definitely blues – brilliantly inflected on both the lyrics and guitar. Titles include "I Do Blues", "Rollin Stone", "Losin Out Blues", "Nashville Stonewall", "I'll Go With Her", "Old Jim Canan's", and "That's No Way To Get Along". CD

Great acoustic blues from the legendary Scrapper Blackwell – easily one of the greatest musical talents to ever come out of the Indy scene! Tunes include titles done both under his name, and featuring Scrapper with other artists – and tracks include "Kokomo Blues", "Down South Blues", "Penal Farm Blues", and "Trouble Blues (parts 1 & 2)" by Blackwell – plus "Good Woman Blues" with Leroy Carr, "Down In Black Bottom" with Black Bottom McPhail, and "Pack Up Her Trunk Blues" with Tommie Bradley. Pivotal work from one of the first bluesmen to ever use "blind" in his name – sides recorded by the legendary Willie McTell when he was at the height of his powers! Most tracks here feature well-recorded vocals from Willie – especially for the time – a haunting accompaniment to his deft work on acoustic guitar, which makes up the bulk of the instrumentation for most of the tracks. Ruth Day joins Willie on a few numbers – and titles include "Razor Ball", "My Baby's Gone", "Atlanta Strut", "God Don't Like It", "Scary Day Blues", "Experience Blues", "Kind Mama", and "Cold Winter Day". Yazoo, 1928. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Vintage work from Mississippi John Hurt, but somehow amazingly clear and crisp in this classic LP presentation! The tunes are wonderfully earthy – just vocals and guitar from Hurt, in a style that's definitely blues, but which has some surprisingly jazzy inflections at times – at least from the perspective of older-style jazz. Titles include "Candy Man Blues", "Spike Driver Blues", "Big Leg Blues", "Ain't No Tellin", "Frankie", "Nobody's Dirty Business", and "Louis Collins". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Blind Willie JohnsonSweeter As The Years Go By ... CD
Yazoo, Late 20s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Key work from Blind Willie Johnson – a singer who only recorded for a few short years, but who left behind a tremendous legacy of music! Willie's got this unusual froggy style of singing that's unlike anyone else we've heard – except for maybe Clarence Henry – and it mixes wonderfully with his spare guitar lines, and soars out over the top once he gets going – which means a special push on the lyrics to lift up the vocals – almost a gospel sort of inflection, which is no surprise given the subject matter of some of the tunes. Titles include "The Soul Of Man", "Sweeter As The Years Go By", "Go With Me To The Land", "If I Had My Way I'd Tear The Building Down", "John The Revelator", and "You'll Need Somebody On Your Bond". ✨✧ Terry Burrows & Daniel MillerMute – A Visual Document ... Book
Thames & Hudson, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mute Records was one of the most striking British labels of the post-punk years – second maybe only to Factory Records for the way it mixed art and design to package modern music – a legacy that began with the label's very first 45, and continued through countless great albums and singles for years to come! This beautiful volume is an especially strong look at the first decade or so of Mute – and showcases the way it found new styles to present its music – a rich legacy of sounds from Nick Cave, Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Fad Gadget, Nitzer Ebb, Einsturzende Neubauten, and many others – a mode that continued even after Mute had found bigger fame in the mainstream, and started to issue some of its productions on major labels. The book traces hundreds of images, and even includes label scans, mock-ups, and other related work – along with a complete representation of the label's albums too. This hardcover edition is full color throughout, over 300 pages, and a great companion to the classic music of Mute! Book
