✨✧ Yan TreggerCatchy ... CD
BBE (UK), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cover looks gothic, but the sound is plenty darn groovy – a sweet set of sound library instrumentals from the 70s scene in Paris – most of them served up with an upbeat, clubby sort of vibe! Yan Tregger may not be one of those names that immediately comes to the lips of underground club collectors – but there's plenty of great clubby moments here, with grooves that bubble on tight basslines, swing with sweet keyboards, and often get lots of riffing guitar in the mix! Yet there's also some nicely weird touches too – as you might expect from a record that was cut far from the mainstream, as part of a studio library set – the kind of weird funky elements you might find on some of the more obscure 12" singles from the late 70s underground. Titles include "Carry On", "Gimmicky", "Sunny Wing", "Light Heart (parts 1 & 2)", "Riff On", "Lyric Soul", "Slow Zoom", and "This Time". CD

✨✧ Yan TreggerDucks & Drakes ... LP
BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An underground funky gem – one that never made it past the collections of the elite sound library audience in the 70s – but which is well deserving of global acclaim! Yan Tregger works here in this style that's every bit as funky as his contemporaries on bigger library labels, but which also shows a strong love of club music too – not straight disco, at least not in any sort of "easy" way – but a real ear for just the right sort of basslines, keyboard parts, and uptempo rhythms to keep things moving throughout! Given the all-instrumental approach, think of this set as a jazzy take on clubby grooves – or maybe an instrumental funk record for the clubs – with great cuts that include "The Girl In The Gold", "Dawn & Darkness", "Friend Island", "The Last Girl", "Haunting Refrain", "Girls Will Be Girls", and "The Way Of All Flesh". ✨✧ Yan TreggerTo The Land Of No Return (with bonus track) ... LP
Magic Touch/Wah Wah (Spain), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Yan Tregger gave the world some funky sound library work in the 70s – but here, he's in much darker territory – definitely in the land of no return, which he explores with waves of really moody electronics! The tunes are still rhythmic – as with Yan's previous work – but also have all these dark corners, spooky echoes, and fuzzy electronics all around the edges – maybe in a way that's similar to the Jazz Funk Greats sound of Throbbing Gristle, but with no vocals at all – and more focused too. Titles include "Hooter", "Shelters", "Insects World", "Caught", "Starting Tone", "Departure", "Nature Death", and "Metal Kit". Reissue features the unreleased bonus track "Space Flower". VariousStrange Breaks & Mr Thing – Rock, Funk, Soul, Jazz & Soundtrack Breaks For Modern Living ... LP
BBE (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3LP ... $24.99 27.99
One of the hippest collections on BBE we've heard in years – a really underground batch of breaks that features fantastically rare tracks in a variety of different genres! The set beautifully shows just how far the funky scene has come in recent years – because many of these cuts are from sources and genres folks wouldn't have thought of touching a decade before – unusual global rock groups, odd sound library records, and obscure category-defying artists who are only getting their due all these many years later. There's a sharp-edged quality to the set that's definitely in keeping with the "breaks" in the title – but the grooves here aren't the simple James Brown variety, nor are they the familiar cuts you might hear in some of those overdone "as sampled by" collections. Instead, most tracks here are ones you probably don't already have in your collection – and titles include "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little Bit More" by Lloyd Charmers, "Calypso Rock" by Original Tropicana Steel Band, "Rocking Bird" by Emphasis, "Yes We Can Can" by The Discoettes, "Tramp" by Bergendy, "Shack Up" by Blockbuster, "Hogtied" by Chain Reaction, "Funky Soul (part 1)" by David Batiste & The Gladiators, "Boxe Et Violence" by Daniel J White, "Boogie Man" by The Crystal Mansion, "Godofallofus" by New Hope, "Black & Blue" by Yan Tregger, "Why Don't You Take Us" by Sky King, "Tighten Up" by Steve Smith, "Percumatics #11" by Bob Ascroft, "Soulful Illusion" by Soulful Illusion, "Food Stamps" by Leaf, and "Superstar" by Society Of Seven.
