Roy AyersEverybody Loves The Sunshine ... CD
Polydor, 1976. Used ... $9.99
One of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever – and also one of his deepest, too! The whole thing's an incredible album of mellow jazzy soul – and it shows Roy at the crossroads, perfecting his earlier funk style with a sweet mellow R&B edge, getting a bit slicker, but still staying on the righteous path, and opening up a whole new bag in soul music. There's a wonderful electric vibe running through the record – not just from Roy's vibes, but from the Fender Rhodes and Arp work by Phillip Woo – and the amazing energy of the rest of the group too. Features the landmark title cut – "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", one of those tunes that becomes more and more of a classic each year – plus spiritual numbers like "Third Eye" , "Keep on Walking", and "The Golden Rod". Very righteous, and with a cool dope jazzy groove! CD

Roy AyersFive Classic Albums – Tear To A Smile/Mystic Voyage/Everybody Loves The Sunshine/Vibrations/Lifeline (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Polydor/Robinsongs (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 34.99
Five incredible albums from the legendary Roy Ayers – all presented in a single set! First up is Tear To A Smile – one of the best early soul albums by Roy Ayers! Roy's working here with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Edwin Birdsong, William Allen, Harry Whitaker, and other hip players – a perfect crew to forge Roy's unique blend of jazz and soul. This is perhaps the first record to really have Roy stretching out in this mode – moving more fully away from funky jazz, into a ream of vocal tracks that would make him one of the most unique artists of the 70s. This mid 70s period of Roy's career was remarkably fertile, creatively as well as for sheer productivity – and Tears To A Smile is one of them that shows some the most artistic growth, and also a deeper sense of soul! Features righteous cuts like "2000 Black", "Ebony Blaze", "Time & Space", and "A Tear To A Smile" – plus the mellow "Magic Lady", and a great remake of Earth Wind & Fire's "That's The Way Of The World". Next is Mystic Voyage – an archetypal album by Roy – and one that really shows him at the turning point! Gone are the trippier jazz funk moments of earlier albums – and in their place are some tight grooves and wonderfully spacey soul. Roy hits the dancefloor with one of his first uptempo funk numbers "Brother Green", a catchy groover with lots of clavinet, and the massive "Life Is Just A Moment", a storming 2-part number that rolls along with a pounding almost house-like groove. "Mystic Voyage" shows the sweet jazzy side of Roy – as it's a vibes-heavy instrumental with a light stepping groove, perfect for the mellow direction he'd take on other records. The album also features some great off-beat funk numbers that recall earlier albums – including the break-heavy "Spirit Of Doo Doo", plus "Funky Motion" and "The Black Five". Everybody Loves The Sunshine is one of Roy Ayers' biggest albums ever – and also one of his deepest, too! Vibrations is fantastic – a set that tightens up the groove from previous Polydor productions, yet still keeps all the soul intact! The record picks up the style begun with the Mystic Voyage album, and pushes it to some slightly tighter territory – a more focused Roy Ayers sound that's totally great, and which makes the album sparkle wonderfully throughout! All aspects of Roy's talents are perfectly balanced here – his warm vocals and jazzy vibes, his uptempo grooves and mellower rhythms – played to perfection by a hip lineup of players that includes Philip Woo on electric piano, Justo Almario on tenor sax, and Steve Cobb on drums. Edwin Birdsong guests a bit on the record – bringing in a nice edge to a few tunes – the album's got a really unique dark undercurrent, even in smoother moments – that subtle Roy Ayers' approach that's always made him one of our all-time favorite artists. Titles include the wonderful jazz-tinged "Searching", a great midtempo stepper that we really love; the funky break track "The Memory", a righteous number that feels like work from earlier records; the clubby classic "One Sweet Love to Remember"; and the sweet instrumental "Vibrations", which has a mellow kickback feel! Other tunes include "Higher", "Domelo (Give It To Me)", "Baby I Need Your Love", and "Better Days". Last up is Lifeline – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was striking in his work at the time – because alongside some of the more upbeat, catchy numbers, there's other tracks that are a fair bit more laidback, and almost abstract at times – a wonderful extrapolation of that sensitive Ayers blend of jazz and soul, with key emphasis on the vibes and keyboards. Titles include the massive groover "Running Away" – which you'll recognize from a key sample history over the years – and club cuts "Cincinnati Growl", "Fruit", "Sanctified Feeling", and "Stranded In The Jungle" – plus the more laidback cuts "Gotta Find A Lover", "I Still Love You", "Lifeline", and "This Side Of Sunshine". Also features bonus tracks – "Evolution (7" mix)", "Domelo (7" mix)", and "Running Away (12" long version)". CD

James BrownPayback ... CD
Polydor, 1973. Used ... $7.99
A masterpiece of funky soul – and one of the greatest albums of the early 70s! It all comes together on this one – funk, soul, politics, and production – and the record is still one of the clearest examples of James Brown's genius that you'll ever find! Recorded during the same sessions as the JBs album Damn Right I Am Somebody – Payback has the group backing James with amazing intensity, playing on and on for very long stretches, improvising jams that perfectly match the vocals, which are often as improvised as the music. The most famous example of this style at work is "The Payback", which begins with a simple head arrangement, then has James riffing off on politics and power, letting the band come in at just the right moment, dropping solos that are still some of the best ever recorded on a funk album. The rest of the album's equally great, and even though most tracks run close to 10 minutes, and the album's a 2LP set, most of the material stays fresher than any 3 minute funk record we've ever heard. Some tracks are separated by these cool voices that rise up as seques – and titles include "Stone To The Bone", "Mind Power", "Take Some Leave Some", and "Shoot Your Shot". CD

Two side-long jams from the great Wilburn Burchette – each of which work together to make for a mad journey in sound that's every bit as spooky as the image on the cover! This is one of those sets that has Burchette using eerie keyboards and electronics as even more than his more familiar guitar – really building things up slowly, and with this sinister sense of sound throughout – hardly relaxing music for meditation, and certainly the kind of record that would have gotten Burchette kicked out of the new age underground of the 70s! Nonesuch, 2023. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Yussef Dayes works here under a title that was first coined by Rahsaan Roland Kirk to refer to jazz – but Dayes takes the term to a whole new level with this groundbreaking set – really moving past jazz to unlock a whole field of soulful expression – served up an excellent group at the core, and key contributions from very hip guests throughout! Dayes has always been someone who defies expectations, but here he's going past just some sort of unconventionality to really make his own mark in music – letting an instrumental solo take center stage when needed, or working through vocals in another moment – but all with this effortless flow that really comes together over the course of the album! The group features Charlie Stacey on keyboards, Alexander Bourt on percussion, and Venna on tenor – and guests include Shabaka Hutchings, Leon Thomas, Miles James, Theon Cross, Chronixx, and others. Titles include "Early Dayes", "Afro Cubanism", "Black Classical Music", "Rust", "The Light", "Pon Di Plaza", "Marching Band", "Tioga Pass", "Cowrie Charms", "Crystal Palace", and "Presidential". CD

DynastyYour Piece Of The Rock/Adventures In The Land Of Music/Second Adventure/Right Back At Cha (3CD set) ... CD
Solar/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 30.99
Four classic albums from Dynasty – served up here with bonus material too! First up is Your Piece Of The Rock – a set that has Dynasty working with snapping grooves with a nice sort of electro undercurrent –- all the handiwork of Leon Sylvers, who also plays bass and drums on the record – and really helps Dynasty find their groove! The tracks here are all quite long, and offer up plenty of space for the players to jam nicely – a group that includes Fred Jackson on saxophone, Gene Dozier on keyboards, and Oscar Brashear on trumpet. Dynasty are pretty good too – a bit more than just a club trio filling in vocals from time to time – and titles include "Satisfied", "Your Piece Of The Rock", "I Don't Want To Be A Freak", "When You Feel Like Giving Love", and "It's Still A Thrill". Next is Adventures In Music – almost a fusion of older sweet group soul with some of the more bottom-driven modes forged by the Solar label! The keyboards are upfront, the basslines strong, and the group is completely tight on the money – at a level that made them one of the strongest 80s proponents of the Solar Records groove. The title cut here is our favorite – a sweet stepper that bursts out with this blast of sound that's totally great – completely captivating, and filled with cascading sounds that really grab us. Other tracks include "Ice Breaker", "Something To Remember", "Day & Night", "Do Me Right", and "I've Just Begun To Love You". Next is Second Adventure – the kind of set that shows why the group went on to become one of the strongest things going in the second chapter of the Solar Records soul empire from LA! The album begins with a rock-solid punch, then continues strongly throughout – basslines, guitar riffs, and funky drums all right on the money – used in a way that's somehow fresher than most of the larger funk groups of the time – and with a nice balance between mellower moments that still seem to have a gentle kind of groove. The energy is wonderful throughout – and titles include "Give It Up For Love", "Love In The Fast Lane", "Revenge", "Here I Am", "A Man In Love", and "You're My Angel". Last up is Right Back At Cha – a set that's super tight and right on the money – that wonderfully catchy approach to 80s R&B that was the hallmark of Dynasty at their height! The tunes are a hook-heavy blend of funk and upbeat modes – all brightly glowing with that style that made Solar Records one of the leading lights of the Cali soul scene in the decade – and which gets some extra special treatment here from one of their most consistent groups! Titles include "That's The Way I Feel About You", "Check It Out, "The Only One", "Questions", "Straight Out", and "Does That Ring A Bell". 3CD set also features 9 bonus tracks – all 7" single mixes of hits from the albums! Margo GuryanWords & Music (3LP set) ... LP
Numero, Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 3LP ... $31.99 56.99
A really fantastic set of work from the wonderful Margo Guryan – songwriter of some of the hippest tunes of the late 60s scene, and one who only gave the world one full album of music before stepping aside from the studio! Margo's got roots in jazz, but also comes across with a cooler, more sophisticated style too – a blend that makes her a really unique figure, and which also maybe helps explain why her songs were recorded by such a wide range of other artists – as we can really see her charms encouraging others to dip into her music! This huge box set brings together most of the too-small recorded legacy of Guryan – her classic Take A Picture album, the great 27 Demos set that came out in later years, and a number of unreleased songs as well – all wrapped up with a beautiful package and a huge amount of notes. The set features 16 never-issued titles, and a total of 46 tracks in all – and titles include "There I Was", "Goodbye July", "If I Lose", "You Promised", "More Understanding Than A Man", "Sun", "Think Of Rain", "The 8.17 Northbound Success Merry Go Round", "What Can I Give You", "Under My Umbrella", "I Don't Intend To Spend Christmas Without You", "Timothy Gone", "The Hum", "Goodbye July", "Hold Me Dancin", "I Like To See The Bad Guys Win", and "California Shake". Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra (Francois Tusques)Le Musichien ... LP
Edizione Corsica/Souffle Continu (France), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
Maybe some of the most spiritual work we've ever heard from French pianist Francois Tusques – working here on two long tracks that really show some strong development in his Intercommunal Free Dance Music Orchestra concept since the 70s! The tracks are partly modal and rhythmic in structure, but have wilder twists and turns along the way – not ear-bracing avant blasts, but instead some of the more long-haired expressions that had been showing up in French avant jazz from the mid 70s onward – a very special brew that makes this album wonderfully unique, even amidst other unique recordings on the scene! The title track, "Le Musichien" is a long track with Tusques on piano, Sylvain Kassap on tenor, Yebga Likoba on soprano sax, Ramadolf on trombone, Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass, and Carlos Andreau on voice – really spinning out some beautiful sounds. The flipside features "Les Amis D'Afrique", another fantastic number with many of the same players – but also with Daniele Dumas on soprano sax, and twin congas from Sam Ateba and Kilikus, who really add a lot to the track. Jeffrey H JacksonMaking Jazz French – Music & Modern Life In Interwar Paris (softcover) ... Book
Duke University Press, 2003. New Copy ... $5.99 27.99
It's maybe no secret that the French love American jazz – but it's a bit more specific that their love of the music goes back to the earliest years of the style – a key period between the world wars where the French not only embraced the new sound of jazz, but also created a welcome audience for key American figures as well! Author Jeffrey H Jackson does a great job of unpacking these early years – and works with a variety of sources that includes personal memoir, press accounts, and even music criticism – to give a very vivid portrait of these important years for jazz outside of the US. Softcover edition is 266 pages. Book

Karma was a group made up of some of the better west coast studio jazz players of the 70s – including Oscar Brashear, Ernie Watts, and George Bohanon – but despite the strength of their individual members, the group never really put things together all that strongly. They're not bad, but it's just that the soul jazz/spiritual promise of the group's name and cover art doesn't really seem to show in their slick music. LA LOMLos Angeles League Of Musicians ... CD
Verve, 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Cool work from a combo that's maybe a bit smaller than you'd guess from the "league" in their name – as the group's just the trio on the front, which features Zak Sokolow on guitar, Jake Faulkner on bass, and Nicholas Baker on drums and percussion – three musicians who really manage to make some unusual sounds with their instruments! Sokolow's got this style of guitar that's very compelling – partly in that older South American mode borrowed from surf guitar, as you'd hear on chicha and cumbia recordings – but with all sorts of effects that really space things out, and sometimes make it feel as if there's a chorus of players working at once! And the percussion of Baker gets nice and rootsy at times – again echoing some Latin currents, but with a sense of rhythm that's nicely different too – which is augmented by the way that Faulkner handles his bass. The whole thing's in a unique space between jazz, Latin, and maybe a bit of small combo funk – with titles that include "Figueroa", "Angels Point", "Ghosts Of Gardena", "Danza De La Lom", "Rebecca", "Moonlight Over Montebello", and "72 Monte Carlo". A great project from Josh Milan of the legendary combo Blaze – a group that so perfectly brought a genuine depth of soulful songwriting integrity to the dancefloor scene from the mid 80s house era onward – and Milan carries on that tradition with the debut of his Honeycomb Music project! Josh wrote and produced each track on the 2CD package – with some great voices from the contemporary scene and names we're seeing for the first time! Live instrumentation and strong songs stand out here, just as they did for Blaze – with a nicely elongated dancefloor groove – most running between 5 & 7 minutes. Each of the 2CDs run north of 45 minutes, with tracks by Angela Johnson, Crystal Johnson, T'Zelle, Lamone, Honey Sweet feat Cassio Ware, Chinahblac, Lamone, Sandra St. Victor and others. A brilliant portrait of one of the most unique women in jazz – South African singer Sathima Bea Benjamin, an artist who had a huge impact on scenes in both the US and Europe – and one who maybe did as much for other artists and the music in general as she did for her own career! The book is a very loving account of Benjamin's long musical journey, trans-Atlantic lifestyle, and cultural challenges – put together with collaborator Carol Ann Muller, who does a great job of giving voice to some of Benjamin's ideas, and focus to key moments that really highlight her contributions. ✨✧ George Adams & Don PullenDecisions/Life Line/Live At Montmartre (3CD set) ... CD
Ultra Vybe/Timeless (Japan), 1981/1984/1985. New Copy 3CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Post-Mingus work from reedman George Adams and pianist Don Pullen – three albums in a single set! Decisions is one of those key records that has George Adams and Don Pullen reinventing expectations of jazz for the 80s – both musicians with plenty of ear for the outside, but also coming back home with a well-rounded, deeply-rooted approach that's crucial in taking the American jazz legacy another step forward! Like some of their similar contemporaries, who could also be avant at times, and straight at others – Adams and Pullen have no concern with setting themselves in one camp or another – and not only flesh out the spirit of the record with both of those aspects of their playing, but also have some surprisingly bluesy undercurrents at times. The group features George Adams on tenor, Don Pullen on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums – and titles include "Decisions", "Triple Over Time", "I Could Really For You", "Message Urgent", and "Trees & Grass & Things". Life Line is a strong outing from this key post-Mingus collaboration – and a record that really shows both Don Pullen and George Adams really coming into their own! Pullen's piano can have plenty of edges, as can Adams' tenor – but there's also some warmer, lyrical moments that really round things out – kind of a balance between righteous energy and deeper quietude that the musicians might have learned during their time with Charles Mingus – taken to a logical small group extension here. Adams also plays a bit of flute, which is especially nice – and the group also includes Cameron Brown on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. Titles include "The Great Escape Or Run John Henry Run", "Seriously Speaking", "Soft Seas", and "Protection". Live At Montmartre is solidly soaring work from tenorist George Adams – recording live here with pianist Don Pullen, one of his best musical partners during the 80s! The album's got a bit more of a bite than some of the pair's studio sessions – a bit straighter overall, but recorded with a nice degree of energy, and some long tracks that really let both players open up nicely – in a combo that also features John Scofield on guitar, Cameron Brown on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums. The inclusion of Scofield's guitar changes up the group's sound in a nice way – adding in some more chromatic elements that really stand out – and titles include "IJ", "Flame Games", "Song Everlasting", and "Forever Lovers". Fantastic stuff – and one of the greatest records ever by Brazilian keyboardist Antonio Adolfo! The album was recorded at the end of the 70s, and has a sound that's a lot like the best fusion work by Azymuth – a great mix of jazz and funk, plus more dynamic Brazilian elements – all wrapped together in a way that a rare few hybrids do this well! There's great keyboards right up front in the mix – and the backing has some tight percussion that crackles along and gives the album a heavy bottom and a great groove. The album was originally only issued on the tiny Artezanal label – but it feels like a lost gem from the classic funk years at Fantasy Records – internationally funky, far past just a Brazilian music gem. Titles include the massive break cut "Cascavel", plus other nice tracks like "Viralata", "A Marcha", "Assanhada", "Vermelhinho", and "Brincadeira Em Mi Bemol". LP, Vinyl record album

Tommy Boy, 1986. New Copy ... $32.99 36.99
The early 12" single work of Afrika Bambaataa had a huge influence back in the day – important not just to the growing hip hop scene in New York, but also as a key bridge for audiences of other styles too – which is maybe no surprise, given how many other unusual musical modes and underground styles Bam would bring into his mix! Those qualities are definitely on display here, on a mid 80s full length set that finally presents some of his key cuts together as one album – great material with a lot of excellent studio help from Arthur Baker, John Robie, and even Tackhead too – on titles that include "Planet Rock (original 12" version)", "Looking For The Perfect Beat (original 12" version)", "Frantic Situation (frantic mix)", "Who You Funkin With", and "Renegades Of Funk (rmx)" – plus "They Made A Mistake", with MC Globe and Pow Wow, and "Go Go Pop" with Trouble Funk. A really fantastic little record – and one that's even better than you might expect from the title – which itself is already pretty darn fantastic! The set is upbeat and funky, but not entirely disco – more this very groovy blend of Mid-East elements and more familiar keyboards – all moving and grooving in ways that are a lot hipper than any other belly dance music we've heard! Music features piano and organ, plus a very cool "string synthesizer" by played by the leader – and there's also plenty of percussion at the core of the set, making for a nice juxtaposition with the electric elements. Cellar Live, 2024. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really fantastic record, and one that's even better than you might expect – which is saying a lot, as we always have high expectations for any music from both saxophonist Eric Alexander and keyboardist Mike LeDonne! The album's very different than most other sessions the artists have recorded – first in that Mike's playing piano throughout, with a sensitivity that's very different than his more familiar sounds on Hammond organ – and second, in that the album's just a set of duets, which is an especially fresh way to hear Alexander – who's grown and changed so much as a musician in recent years. The open quality of the record is fantastic, and both players are in top form – and LeDonne also gives us a few solo numbers that are pretty fantastic too. Titles include the originals "For Mabes", "Two In One", "Mary", "Mutation", and "Lost But Not Forgotten" – plus takes on "Autumn In New York" and "Round Midnight". CD

One of those rare Cuban classics that's beyond compare, and almost impossible to describe in words – music from the post-revolution years, when the island nation was really breaking past more familiar conventions in Latin music – and experimenting a lot more than ever before! In a way, it's almost as if the isolation gave the scene new freedom – definitely the case here as percussion is blended with soaring strings, funky keyboards, and other cool elements to create this dreamlike sort of music that's both groovy and ambitious at the same time – lofty and down to earth, and very much a uniquely unified sound throughout the entire album! There's some great groovers on here, mixed with laidback numbers that really give the album a lot of heft – and titles include "Ritmo Abierto", "Postludio", "Te Canta Mi Tambor", "El Arriero", "Este Camino Largo", and "Decide Tu". Apifera are maybe a bit less in jazz territory than their previous release – still using work from a keyboard-based combo background, but with elements that often really lean into the tune, and sometimes use vocals in a mighty nice way! There's still plenty of instrumental cuts, and lots of great jazz numbers that have a very forward-thinking vibe – definitely Stones Throw in aesthetic, with a genre-shaking quality that's every bit as fresh as the group's debut – and maybe even more able to win new ears to their very unique musical quest! An overlooked treasure from the glory days of A&M Records – and a set that's got a richness in sound that you might not guess from the cover! Renee Armand has this airy vocal style that's maybe informed by earlier generations of folk, but which is set here to really lovely larger arrangements by Mike Melvoin – who uses acoustic and electric elements in nicely intertwining ways – almost as if the whole thing's an American take on territory that Joe Boyd was exploring over in the UK! At times, there's almost a folk funk approach to the music, thanks to gentle basslines that work wonderfully with Renee's vocals – and titles include "I Think You're Letting Me Go", "Elizabeth Rain", "Guess I Never Knew You", "Raining In LA", "Falling Ladies", and "Does Anybody Love You". Stones Throw, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 29.99
Steve Arrington's got a long long legacy in soul music – one that goes back to his late 70s work on Slave – but he also sounds completely contemporary here, working in collaboration with a whole host of producers who were no doubt influenced by his creations of the past, and help Arrington find a whole new vibe in his music! Tunes are often spare, and served up in a blend of vocals, beats, keyboards, and guitar – yet all elements are given some cool, crispy twists and turns through a host of hip hop elements and other contemporary modes – but all at a level that only seems to bring new live to Arrington's music, and not overwhelm it. The set features work from Mndsgn, Gifted & Blessed, J Rocc, Knxwledge, Devin Morrison, and others – and titles include "Love Knows", "Keep Dreamin", "Soulful I Need That In My Life", "Make A Difference", "Joys Of Love", "It's Alright", "Make Ya Say Yie", "You're Not Ready", "Good Mood", and "Work On It". A heady set of work from the Detroit scene at the start of the 70s – originally issued on the Westbound label, and one of the company's few rock releases of the time – although maybe not that far overall from the freaky fuzzy sound of the early years of Funkadelic! There's a nicely swirling vibe to the music – guitars and organ cooked up nicely in the best Motor City way, with a definite soul influence in both the production and the way the vocals kind of bubble and flow out of the mix – slightly psychedelic at points, but with some roots elements at the core as well – all of which make for a mighty nice blend, and a record that definitely lives up to the Westbound legacy! A record that's a keyboard lover's delight – especially if you love more synth-heavy sounds – because Rich Aucoin presents the tracks as a mini history of synthesizer sounds and styles – working here with instruments from the collections of the National Music Centre in Calgary, and the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in LA! The music really resonates with the kind of elements you'd expect from that legacy – and from the great image on the front – a shift in sound from track to track, as Aucoin delivers these instrumentals that are especially heavy on influences from the world of 80s club, dance, and funk. The set uses all sorts of Moog, Roland, Korg, Oberheim, Yamaha, and EML keys – and titles include "Sonica", "Octave The Cat", "Electrocomp", "Optigan", "Waldorf Wave", "Delta Music Research", and "Moog". The album features co-production work from Bigyuki – and the whole thing has that fat, funky bottom we love from his own work – almost a 2020s update on earlier Japanese clubjazz modes – but more abstract, and with these waves of electricty that crackle nicely next to the acoustic properties of Baba's tenor as he solos! Grapefruit (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 38.99
The overlooked legacy of Bachdenkel – maybe not the biggest name on the British scene at the start of the 70s, but a group who were initially signed to Philips, and made some really fantastic music at the time! The group are a trio, and it's a bit hard to sum up the quality of the work in easy words – as it's sometimes very personal, but not folksy at all – other times a bit more instrumentally intense, yet not really prog either – always somewhat dark overall, and never trying at all for an easy hook or the kind of track that might have gotten them any sort of radio play at all. The initial album on the set is Lemmings, a moody masterpiece that Philips only issued in France, but which is a stunning piece of work – and the second record, Stalingrad, got even less circulation at the time, but is equally powerful too. The 3CD set features both those records, plus lots of bonus tracks added to each – and a full bonus CD of material from 1967 through the 70s – 22 more tracks that really fill in the space between the main records, as does the very detailed notes that come with the package. 50 tracks in all – and long overdue! EMI/Harvest (UK), 1977. Used ... $9.99
The "air" here might well refer to the charged atmosphere in the arena during the live show that makes up this set from Be Bop Deluxe – a nice summation of everything that Bill Nelson and the group had done on their studio classics from the mid 70s, maybe stripped-down here a bit away from the studio! Yet somehow, the music also has that wonderful sense of compression that the group always got – a way of layering the sound at a level that's maybe post-glam, pre-punk, and without some of the fuller trappings of ELO, with more of a focus on the guitar. The whole approach holds up surprisingly well on stage – and titles include "Shine", "Fair Exchange", "Sister Seagull", "Blazing Apostles", "Life In The Air Age", and "Ships In The Night". CD

Marcus BelgraveGemini II (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Tribe/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $11.99 24.99
One of the key records from the Detroit Tribe Records scene of the 70s – a masterful blend of spiritual jazz and deeper ideas, and maybe the greatest record ever cut by trumpeter Marcus Belgrave! The set was originally issued on the Gem Eye label in 1974, in a pressing of only 1000, the record's done nothing but increase in legend since – and for good reason too, given that the Tribe pressing got wider circulation, and other reissues have really helped establish the legend of the music! The groove picks up in the same domain as the better Art Ensemble Of Chicago records of the late 60s and early 70s – with the rubbery funk electric bass lines and celestial groove of the funkier moments, but deeper sounds of more spiritual points too. Trumpeter Marcus Belgrave plays in a beautiful ensemble, packed with Tribe labelmates – Wendell Harrison on tenor sax & percussion, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Harold McKinney on electric piano. Roy Brooks and Billy Turner are on drums and percussion, and the expansive vibe is fleshed out with the help of Lorenzo Brown on bongos and Daryl Dybka on mini Moog. The record includes Belgrave's beautiful epic "Space Odyssey", which has a long flowing cosmic groove, nice electronics, and haunting trumpet solos. Other cuts include "Gemini II", "Marcia's Opal", "Glue Fingers (Parts I & II)", and "Odoms Cave". CD

William Bell was one of the singers who first helped the Stax label get going at the start of the 60s – but during the second chapter of Stax, when they broke from Atlantic, his contributions were maybe even more amazing – as his voice had matured wonderfully, and he was able to handle a range of sensitive themes that went even farther than before! The music here is southern soul at its most mature and sophisticated – heartbreaking vocals, but moving past some of the more oft-tread territory of the 60s – as Bell rose in pride and power during the new generation of Stax, with results that are completely sublime throughout! This side of his work isn't nearly as well-known as the first, but is even better to our ears – presented in a string of singles, both a and b-sides, with detailed notes on this really special period in his career. Titles include "I Forgot To Be Your Lover", "Happy", "Born Under A Bad Sign", "A Smile Can't Hide A Broken Heart", "Lonely Soldier", "Let Me Ride", "Save Us", "All For The Love Of A Woman", "The Man In The Street", "Penny For Your Thoughts", "Get It While It's Hot", "Nobody Walks Away From Love Unhurt", "Getting What You Want", "You've Got The Kind Of Love I Need", "If You Really Love Him", "Lovin On Borrowed Time", "Bring The Curtain Down", and "My Whole World Is Falling Down". Really heady work from Black Widow – the legendary UK prog group, and not the countless other artists who've also recorded under the same name! Black Widow were one of a handful of groups who took the horror rock modes of the early 60s and pushed them into territory that was much more terrifying – using hard rock impulses and wiggier instrumental modes to underscore the satanic and supernatural themes in their music! It's maybe no surprised that the group were managed by the same team who handled Black Sabbath – but you'll find music here that's much more sonically complex, especially over the huge range of records included in the package – a box that features their initial incarnation as Pesky Gee on the album Exclamation Mark, an early demo album, and the studio records Sacrifice, Black Widow, and Black Widow III – plus the Black Widow IV album, which was never issued back in the 70s. An album that's maybe not as modern as some of Paul Bley's other records – but one that's still got a compelling quality throughout! The session supposedly takes inspiration from Gregorian chants (somewhat big on the recording scene at the time of the 1994 date) – but the music is all jazz all the way, a unique combination of Bley's marvelous tones on the piano, the electric cello of David Eyges, and the drums of Bruce Ditmas. Eyges mostly plays his instrument like a jazz bass – and an acoustic one at that – and there's a lot more swing here than you might expect, but still all the right touches of tone to remind us that Bley's on piano. A fantastic never-heard 70s performance from alto genius Arthur Blythe – one captured a few years before his rise to fame on a major label, and with a vibe that's very different than those well-known classics! Blythe here is working in the free, open space of the loft jazz generation – spinning out these stunning long solos on alto sax, in a spare lineup that features Juni Booth on bass, Steve Reid on drums, and Muhammad Abdullah on conga – no piano or other horns at all, which means that Blythe gets plenty of room to step out and solo! And in fact, the first track on the set is a solo alto number of brilliance – and things only get better as the other players come into the mix, especially Booth, who's got a very melodic way of handling the bass, creating these tones that are almost as if there's a secret keyboardist hanging there at times. A pare of rare European sessions from saxophonist Marion Brown – back to back on a single set! First up is Gesprachsfetzen – a really wonderful collaboration between alto saxophonist Marion Brown and vibist/reedman Gunter Hampel – a set that's maybe one of the sharpest to come out of their work together! The music has maybe even sharper edges than some of Brown's previous records – a dose of some of the European modernism in which Hampel was steeping himself, but also with some more organic, spiritual qualities on the solos – not just Brown's, but the work of trumpeter Ambrose Jackson – who's pretty great here too. AACM legend Steve McCall is also in the group on drums and percussion, along with bassist Buschi Niebergall – and the set was recorded live, with titles that include "Gesprachsfetzen", "Exhibit A", "Babudah", "Tomorrow Is The Beginning Of The End Of Yesterday", and "Aba". In Sommerhausen is one of the key records that alto saxophonist Marion Brown made while working on the German scene at the end of the 60s – an incredibly fruitful period that seemed to unlock all this new energy in Brown's music in a mode that was similar to what happened when Don Cherry started making time on the European scene! Brown's key partner here is Gunter Hampel – who plays vibes, bass clarinet, and percussion – the latter of which is handled by the other members of the group too – a lineup that includes Ambrose Jackson on trumpet, Daniel Laloux on bass, and Steve McCall on drums – playing here before his better-known work with the AACM. Jeanne Lee brings some lovely vocalizations to the set – and titles include "Dance No 1", "Exhibit B", "Il Ne Chant Pas", "The Sound Of A Song", and "Malipieros Midnight Theater". CD

The set features backings from Peter Matz – who often accompanied the classier singers of the time – and Ruth really does a great job of mixing her bold vocals with his jazzy charts – soaring to new heights in a way that swings nicely, and makes for much deeper soul than most of Matz's other projects. Musicians include Hank Jones on piano, Clark Terry on trumpet, Barry Galbraith on guitar, Urbie Green on trombone, and Richard Davis on bass – and there also seem to be some female backup singers in a few spots too. Titles include two from Nellie Lutcher "Hurry On Down" and "He's A Real Gone Guy" and Dick Hyman's "Watch It", "Whispering Grass", "I Know Why", "Here's That Rainy Day", and a very interesting interpretation of "On The Good Ship Lollipop" – which almost makes the whole tune sound like a sad ballad. Billy BrunerBilly Bruner ... LP
Athens Of The North (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
Billy Bruner looks nice and relaxed on the cover – and his grooves are nice and relaxed, too – but maybe that's just how they make their music in Billy's hometown of Tulsa! The set's got a sweet blend of 80s soul and mellow boogie – never too over the top, and handled with a nice mix of 80s production styles, in a good balance between electric elements and some warmer modes at the core. Most cuts are nicely unpolished – diamonds in the rough that might have been hits, had they gotten commercial treatment – but which are maybe even better sounding in this approach. The package features a few unreleased tracks, and work by Billy that also includes cuts by T'Spoon and The Davis Family – on titles that include "If You Dance Tonite", "School Dance", "Amazing", "The Tulsa Song", "The Dream", "Sweetness", "Cat's Meow", and "Say Yeah". Harold BuddPavilion Of Dreams ... LP
Obscure/Superior Viaduct, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the earliest albums ever from Harold Budd – an artist who'd later rise to great ambient fame in the following decade, but who's maybe at his most sophisticated here! The set has all the hallmark of the new musical experiments that Brian Eno was showcasing on his Obscure Music label – where the set first appeared – and Budd plays electric piano with a very cool set of contemporary musicians – a lineup that includes alto sax from Marion Brown, harp from Maggie Thomas, marimba from Michael Nyman and John White, and glockenspiel from Gavin Bryars. Brian Eno produced the record, and vocalizes slightly – and tracks have a long-spun, almost spiritual vibe – on titles that include "Bismallahi Rrahmani Rrahmani", "Two Songs (Let Us Go Into The House Of The Lord/Butterfly Sunday)", "Madrigals Of The Rose Angel", and "Juno". ✨✧ Build An ArkRevision – An Anthology (3LP set) ... LP
New Dawn, 2000s. New Copy 3LP ... $51.99 56.99
Back in the first decade of this century, Build An Ark were one of the few groups to really carry forward the spiritual jazz legacy of the 70s – part of the same LA underground that rose up on Nimbus Records back in the day, and guided by the unstoppable power of Carlos Nino – who worked perfectly as both an instrumentalist in the group, and their producer! There were always some contemporary elements in the music, but maybe more surprising was the way that Build An Ark resisted all the remixing and programming that would often get in the way of the few others who tried for this territory – as they were always a committed spiritual jazz ensemble from the outset, not a club jazz act or a funk group. The package brings together all the best music from their out of print albums – a great 3LP run of titles that include "You Gotta Have Freedom", "John Coltrane", "Mother", "Build An Ark", "Door Of The Cosmos", "In The Park", "Sunflowers In My Garden", "Dawn", "Healing Song", "Love Sweet Like Sugar Cane", "World Music", "Our Cry For Peace", "Conversations", "Pure Imagination/The Tortoise & The Hare", and "When Ancestors Speak". Kenny BurrellGuitar Forms (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Verve, 1965. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $36.99 38.99
A standout session from guitar giant Kenny Burrell – and a set that's maybe one of his most modern albums of the 60s! The record features backings from arranger Gil Evans – most famous for his work with Miles Davis, and working here in a style that's nicely different with Kenny – less overwhelming in his approach to the charts, with a mode that still really lets Burrell dominate, and maybe even sets him free from the role of rhythm, so that he can really show off some of the more sophisticated sides of his playing! The album's one of a handful that have Burrell working this way from the time – and as on the others, there's sometimes a quality that's even more soulful than some of his records with smaller groups – a real surprise, but a great one too. The group features an excellent array of top-shelf musicians – including Johnny Coles on trumpet, Lee Konitz on alto, Steve Lacy on soprano, and Richie Kamuca on tenor – and titles include "Lotus Land", "Downstairs", "Moon & Sand", "Terrace Theme", "Greensleeves", and "Loie". Gary Burton TrioNew Vibe Man In Town/Who Is Gary Burton/In Concert ... CD
RCA/BGO (UK), Mid 1960s. New Copy 2CDs ... $14.99 19.99
A trio of early RCA albums from vibes genius Gary Burton – all brought together in a single set! First up is New Vibe Man In Town – the first-ever album from vibist Gary Burton – a very young player at the time of recording, but one who's definitely worth the "new vibe man" promised in the title! The style here is maybe a bit more conventionally swinging than some of Burton's records from later years – a trio setting with Gene Cherico on bass and the great Joe Morello on drums – but both rhythm players are already pretty hip with their timings, and really push Burton into spacious, chromatic territory that's completely sublime – a sound that already marks the musician as really bringing something fresh to his instrument. Titles include "Joy Spring", "Over The Rainbow", "Like Someone In Love", "Minor Blues", "Out Waltz", "So Many Things", "Sir John", and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream". Next is Who Is Gary Burton – a gem of an album from the young Gary Burton – his second date for RCA, and a perfectly-pitched session that's got plenty of modern edges, but none of the too-experimental modes that sometimes bogged Gary down in later years! The date's especially noteworthy for the presence of two great horn players – Clark Terry on trumpet and Phil Woods on alto – both of whom flesh out Burton's lyrical approach to vibes with some deeply soulful solos of their own – opening up the record with a range of sounds that's simply breathtaking, and which represents some of the freshest work from both players in the early 60s. The rest of the group features Tommy Flanagan on piano, John Neves on bass, and Joe Morello on drums – and titles include "Storm", "I've Just Seen Her", "Fly Time Fly", "Conception", "Get Away Blues", and "One Note". Gary Burton In Concert features groundbreaking work on vibes by Gary Burton – recorded in a setting that's live and open, yet quite groovy too! There's a rhythmic freeness that marks the set from the very first note – lessons learned from the generation of Ornette, yet taken in new direction – and definitely into new colors and tones – thanks to Burton's amazingly chromatic vibes, and the vivid guitar of Larry Coryell – not to mention the unusual rhythms from Steve Swallow on bass and Bob Moses on drums. These youthful players push the envelope even more than on some of Burton's other RCA albums of the time – going for a groove that's much more open and abstract, and which puts Coryell's guitar in a role that's as important as Burton's vibes in the set. Titles include "Wrong Is Right", "Walter L", "Lines", "The Sunset Bell", and "Blue Comedy". CD

Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 1970s. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99 23.99
Two classic Lloyd Charmers albums – both new to CD, and presented here with lots of first-time CD bonus tracks too! First up is the great Gold Connection album – an obscure little record, but a soulful one too – a rare 70s Federal Records session that mixes together reggae and soul – with vocals by a trio of female singers that includes a young Marcia Griffiths and Cynthia Schloss! Lots of tracks take a disco inspiration, but slow the pace down a lot more for the Kingston scene – so that the grooves are dubby steppers with a lot more going on at the bottom than their American counterparts up north – laidback, and given some nice instrumentation from Willie Lindo on bass, Harold Butler on keyboards, and Cedric Brooks on tenor! Titles include "That's The Way I Like It", "Fly Robin Reggae", "Love's Theme", "Soul Charm", "Do It Anyway Reggae", "Latin Hustle Reggae", and "Darling I Like It". Next up is Sweet Dreams, a very unique album from Jamaican sweet soul singer Dobby Dobson – an artist who seems to owe a bit to Sam Cooke, and who references music from Sam's era too – remaking some older cuts with a warmer, sweeter 70s vibe overall! The Lloyd Charmers production makes for an unusual blend of reggae and classic soul – and titles include "Little Stars", "Sweet Dreams", "Oh Gee", "You're Mine All Mine", "Muriel", "My Special Prayer", and "It's A Miracle". 2CD set features 20 more bonus tracks – including the great Supernatural Thing project from Richard Ace with Lloyd Charmers – and more tracks from Sister Stern, The Africans, Richard Ace, Delroy Wilson, and CHARM! Really fantastic work from bassist Anna Butterss, and a set that's maybe more live and less assembled than her previous effort – with key contributions from some really great musicians who make the whole thing sound like a mighty strong group effort on most tracks! CameoFeel Me ... CD
Chocolate City/Universal (Japan), 1980. Used ... $22.99
A great 80s groove from Cameo – but one that's still done in the group's best early funk ensemble mode! There's maybe a bit more emphasis on the basslines and keyboards than before, but the sound of the music is still wonderfully full and spontaneous – very much in keeping with the warmly collaborative look of the group on the cover, who really sound like they're having a hell of a lot of fun making the record! The rhythms have a razor-sharpness that just about nobody else can touch – and there's all these cool little instrumental flourishes that sneak into the mix and really keep things interesting – odd sounds on familiar instruments, moogy moments on keyboards, and even some vocal inflections that come as a nice surprise. There's two nice mellow cuts – "Feel Me" and "Is This The Way", which have a sweetly compressed harmony sound on the lyrics – and funky numbers include "Better Days", "Keep It Hot", "Roller Skates", and "Is This The Way". Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1974. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
The last album in a legendary run of music from keyboardist Doug Carn – his final album for the Black Jazz label, and a set that pushes even farther than his previous efforts! Jean Carn isn't in the group this time around, but the set does feature a totally great twin-vocal approach – with singing by Joyce Green and John Conner, blending their voices together in a style that's right up there with the most righteous 70s jazz experiments by Horace Silver or Billy Gault! This vocal balance really brings a new sort of power to Carn's music – furthering the righteous spirit of earlier years with a hell of a lot of energy – also aided by great instrumental work from Ronnie Laws on tenor and soprano sax, Thurman Green on trombone, Calvin Keys and Nathan Page on guitars, and Big Black on percussion. Titles include the classic "Higher Ground" – plus "Adam's Apple", "Western Sunrise", "Chant", "Sanctuary", "The Messenger", and "Mighty Mighty". CD

A&M, 1969. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Early genius from The Carpenters – a really tremendous little album, and one that's quite different than their soft rock hits of the 70s! There's a plenty playful feel to the set – energy that comes right off the best Sunshine Pop of late 60s A&M Records – to which this album is a perfect link – a mode in which the studio's as much a part of the sound as Richard and Karen's own contributions – wrapped up with a heavenly approach by producer Jack Daugherty. Tunes are simpler, sometimes more personal – and there's lots of nice basic music touches along the way – a piano here, sweet keyboard there, some gentle drums, and more – all to make the music sound totally groovy! If you've ever heard the Roger Nichols music for A&M, and wondered how he could have such a later link to this pair, this is the album to show you the way. John CarterMy World Fell Down – The John Carter Story (4CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 30.99
Maybe the first-ever collection to really get at the huge scope of work handled by the great John Carter – an important figure in the UK music scene of the 60s, but one who worked in a variety of guises, and never got as much exposure in the spotlight as he might! Carter was a hell of a songwriter, and also had the kind of an ear for a tune that made him an equivalent to some of the American talents roaming around the Brill Building in the mid 60s – and like those artists, John first started putting out songs for others, then also recording his own work too – but often in a variety of different groups that were more put together for recording projects than touring onstage. This huge set brings together all these magical moments of pop genius from John Carter – 105 tracks in all, with recordings by Carter Lewis, The Ivy League, First Class, Ministry Of Sound, The Wheels, Friends, The Flower Pot Men, Carlew Choir, Stamford Bridge, Stormy Petrel, and other Carter-related projects – plus a fair bit of demo recordings done with full studio help as well. It's great to hear Carter's evolution over the decade or so covered by the box set – almost an evolution of British pop and rock as well! CD

The keyboards are up a bit more than before on this one – but that core Chic groove is still very firmly in place – snapping, clapping, and rapping the dancefloor with an undeniably catchy sound! There's a sound here that almost shows the team of Niles and Rodgers picking up some tips from the other acts they'd been working with in the studio during the time – and there's an especial influence from the growing wave of British acts slipping into the American charts in the early 80s. But that influence is never taken literally, and really just helps the team hit more of a pop-styled groove on some of the best tracks – fully shaking off the trappings of their late 70s club years, and retooling their sound for slightly more contemporary hooks! Three great later soundtracks from Stelvio Cipriani – an artist who's mostly known for his famous 70s material on the Italian scene! First up is Baciami Strega – a score that really continues the keyboard genius that set Cipriani apart from the pack in the 70s – served up here with keyboards that are a mix of acoustic and electric piano, plus a few more 80s-styled digital keys – all with qualities that have a lot more warmth than most other keyboard scores of the time, and which update Cipriani's approach, but with the aesthetics of the new decade. Next is Don Bosco – a soundtrack that has a wonderfully warm vibe, with light orchestrations that are usually fronted by a key solo instrument – usually a guitar or harmonica line, all delivered in a style that's got all that spacious sensitivity we love in Stelvio's work of the 70s! Last up is the beautiful Se Non Avessi L'Amore – Stelvio Cipriani at his finest – with all the warm, lovely tones that have always made his music so great – especially when he scores on the "amore" side of the spectrum! The film's a bit more recent than some of the 70s classics we've always loved from Stelvio, but the sound is right up there with his best mellow moments of years back – lots of light strings, gliding along in haunting themes – using a Morricone-like sense of space, punctuated nicely by a bit of piano too! 3CD set features 65 tracks in all! The Clarks are maybe best known for their landmark track "You Brought The Sunshine" – a completely righteous blend of gospel, soul, and disco that crossed over very big back in the day – but the group have an endless amount of great music to offer, a great deal of which is brought together in this wonderful set! The sisters always kept a strong ear towards the secular soul styles of their day – but they also always pushed things with the sort of amazing vocal interplay that used to only be the territory of male gospel groups in earlier decades – fantastic harmonies, soaring leads, and really great group formation. And if you're not a completely huge fan of gospel, don't worry – because the message here is often a more general one of positivity, which really lifts up the spirit of the tunes in a universal way. Titles include "You Brought The Sunshine (single edit)", "Everything Is Gonna Be Alright", "He Keeps Me Company", "Patience", "I'm Going To Have Just What I Want", "Power", "Overdose Of The Holy Ghost", "My Mind Is Made Up", "Nothing To Lose All To Gain", "No Other Name", "Keep On Looking Up", and "I Found What I'm Looking For". Cloud OneSpaced Out – The Best Of Cloud One ... CD
P&P, Late 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $6.99 15.98
Classic work from the legendary P&P Records label – created by one of the "P" talents who gave them their name – studio genius Patrick Adams, who mostly works here on his own under the name of Cloud One! Adams already had great success working with east coast soul groups in the first half of the 70s – and as Cloud One, he really finds his way around the more cutting-edge styles of the time – mixing bits of funk with bits of disco, and often adding in these cool electronic elements that really helped define the P&P sound! Many cuts have cool moogy keyboards, and some spacey elements along the edges – done with a lot more soul than some of the Euro space disco recordings of the same time – with much more of a tie to the New York underground that was Adams' main milieu. Titles include the classics "Spaced Out" and "Atmosphere Strut" – plus "Jump Jump Jump", "Stomp Your Feet & Dance", "Disco Juice", "Don't Let My Rainbow Pass Me By", "Patty Duke", "Happy Music", "Doin It All Night", and "Flyin High". Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... LP
Impulse, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $25.99 27.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". LP, Vinyl record album

Norman ConnorsLove From The Sun ... LP
Buddah, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $13.99
A spiritual jazz masterpiece from drummer Norman Connors – one of those unique albums he cut before moving into soul music – done at a level that rivals the early 70s genius on labels like Strata East or Impulse Records! Connors worked with many contemporaries on those labels, and gets a good degree of help from them here, too – in a massive lineup that includes Eddie Henderson on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Gary Bartz on alto, Carlos Garnett on tenor, Buster Williams on bass, Bill Summers on drums, and even Dee Dee Bridgewater on a bit of vocals too! With a lineup like that, it would be easy to lay back and just do nothing – but you can really hear Connors' musical vision taking the lead – that warmly soulful approach that was there right from the start, given some great focus here by producer Skip Drinkwater. Tracks are all long, and free-flowing – a bit out at times, but always returning to the modal pulse of Connors' soulful rhythms. Titles include "Carlos II", "Kumakucha", "Holy Waters", "Revelation", and "Love From The Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

CookersLook Out ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99 29.99
Maybe the most majestic album from this very majestic group – a righteous combo of musicians whose sound is far more than the simple "cookers" name might imply – as they really reach for the skies with a masterful blend of talents from an all star group! Trumpeter David Weiss leads the group, but also gives plenty of space to the giants alongside him – a lineup that includes Billy Harper on tenor, Donald Harrison on alto, Eddie Henderson on trumpet, George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – all musicians who maybe sound better here together than they sometimes do on their own! And despite the status of these players, there's no ego involved – as the unified passages come together beautifully, the unfurl into solos that really stake some individual territory Titles include "Destiny Of Yours", "The Mystery Of Monifa Brown", "Somalia", "Aka Reggie", "Traveling Lady", and "Mutima". John CorbettListener's Guide To Free Improvisation ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2016. New Copy ... $14.99 15.00
A much-needed book for the open-minded listener – a well-written volume from jazz critic John Corbett – and one that's bound to widen your ears to a whole new realm of listening! The book's pocket-sized – maybe so that you can sneak it into a club when visiting a free jazz concert – and it's written in a style that's both personal, but very directive – with a full understanding of the complexities that come into play when listening to improvised music, and a guide towards facing some of the more difficult challenges involved! Corbett clearly loves this music, but without any sort of high ideals – none of the too-cool-for-school modes that are usually standard with the avant garde, and instead this very down to earth approach that shows the listener that they've got all the tools needed to enjoy the music themselves. The goal here (one we can totally endorse) is to bring the listener face to face with new and challenging sounds – but in a way that allows them to instantly contextualize them too – yet without having to carry years of jazz or musical experience into the process. The book is divided up into easy-to-digest sections – and penned with a surprisingly warm style too. Book

✨✧ Stanley CowellBrilliant Circles ... CD
Black Lion (UK), 1969. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A record that's definitely as brilliant as promised in the title – a set that has the young pianist Stanley Cowell bridging the late 60s Blue Note modal sound and his greatness to come on the Strata East label – all with a style that would set the tone for so many other players and groups in the 70s! The mix of musicians here is a dream – not just Cowell on piano, but also Bobby Hutcherson on vibes, Woody Shaw on trumpet, Tyrone Washington on tenor and flute, Reggie Workman on bass, and Joe Chambers on drums – all players with maybe a bit more under their belt, but who also instantly lock into Cowell's visionary new sound – spun out in a mix of modal moments and freer solos, on tunes penned by members of the group. Every track is nice and long, and has a spiritual jazz vibe that owes a lot more to the worlds of Cowell, Hutcherson, and Shaw than it does John Coltrane – as you'll hear on titles that include "Brilliant Circles", "Earthly Heavens", "Boo Ann's Grand", and "Bobby's Tune". CD reissue has two bonus cuts: "Musical Prayers" and "Brilliant Circles"! CD

Patrick CowleyMuscle Up ... CD
Dark Entries, Late 70s. Used ... $14.99
Moody work from the legendary Patrick Cowley – all music originally composed for use in 70s porno films shot on the San Francisco scene – most of it in the years before Cowley took off in more techno-styled dancefloor modes! These tracks are all heavy on electronics, but the grooves are often somewhat gentle – mostly in modes that run from midtempo to spacey, and which clearly featured during the more languid erotic scenes of the movies – maybe moments when the action was heated, but also rapturously intense. And as such, the music has a very different vibe than the familiar funk and jazz you'd know from other porn films of the period (although there is one great funk number here) – and the use of electronics give most of these cuts a cool, spacey vibe – almost like Sky Records material from the German scene, or pre-cold wave electronics. Titles include "Deep Inside You", "5oz Of Funk", "Timelink", "Uhura", "Pigfoot", "Don't Ask", "Cat's Eye", and "Somebody To Love Tonight". CD

Creation RebelHigh Above Harlesden 1978 to 2023 (Dub From Creation/Close Encounters/Rebel Vibrations/Starship Africa/Psychotic Jonkanoo/Hostile Environment) (6CD set) ... CD
On-U Sound (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s/2023. New Copy 6CD ... $46.99 49.99
All the great early albums from Creation Rebel – plus their excellent comeback too! The set begins with Dub From Creation – not just the debut album from Creation Rebel, but also a set that marks the first studio work from the young Adrian Sherwood – part of the long On-U Sound legacy to come, and a wealth of other wonderful music! There's a spareness here that's great – maybe a bit less dark than later Sherwood projects, but no less stark – with melodica and keyboards weaving nicely amidst the dubby rhythms! Titles include "Basic Principals", "Dub Fusion", "Liberation", "Rising Star", "Vision Of Creation", and "Creation In A Iration". Next is Close Encounters Of The Third World – an early part of the On-U Sound legacy, even if the set wasn't issued on the label – a key effort by Creation Rebel that features recording work done both in London and Kingston, layered together in a beautifully dubby way! The sound here is definitely underground – full of message-oriented lyrics from Crucial Tony, who sings in a style that definitely earns him his name – with great melodica and organ flowing through the mix next to Lizard's bass – topped with added horn work from The Arabs in all the right spots! The production is superb – flat on the drums, wide on the sides, which makes for a really wonderful groove – on titles that include "Know Yourself", "Conspiring", "Creation Fever", "Natty Conscience Free", and "Joyful Noise". Rebel Vibrations features early production genius from Adrian Sherwood – and a record that sets the tone for all the On-U Sound genius to come! The set's a huge step forward from even the previous excellent Creation Rebel album – as the way the sounds are layered together is incredible – almost modes learned from post-punk production, but used to deliver a pure, righteous dub album – one that drops out all the vocals, and allows you to concentrate even more on the totally wicked instrumentation! The set features stunning drums from Style Scott, heady bass from Lizard, and all sorts of very cool keyboard work from Clifton Morrison – used in these ways that float about like a swarm of sounds, especially when mixed with the melodica of Doctor Pablo. The whole thing's amazing – and titles include "Diverse Doctor", "Hunger & Strife", "Jungle Affair", "Rebel Vibration", "Black Lion Dub", and "Mountain Melody". Starship Africa is a brilliant Creation Rebel effort for On-U Sound from the dawn of the 80s – landing in the futuristic dub spacecraft that is their Starship Africa – percussion heavy and spaced out ingenuity from Adrian Sherwood & co! Tripped, echoey atmospherics that's cast as a soundtrack to movie that doesn't exist, the music is forward thinking, boundary busting dubby grooves exists out of time and sounds great to this day. Includes "Starship Africa" (Sections 1-5) and "Space Movement" (Sections 1-4). On Psychotic Jonkanoo, Crucial Tony is back in the mix for this righteous early 80s album from Creation Rebel – a set that has Adrian Sherwood only furthering his production genius as he layers together stunning instrumental work from the group! The presence of the vocals has the instrumentation slightly back in the mix – but there's still a great run of rhythms throughout, all driven by the mighty heady basslines of Lizard Logan! There's less keyboards than before, but still some nice electronic bits all over the place – and titles include "The Dope", "African Space", "Threat To Creation", "Highest Degree", "Mother Don't Cry", and "Drum Talk". From 2023, Hostile Environment is the first album in many years from this legendary studio project from On-U Sound and Adrian Sherwood – and one that makes us feel as if the passage of decades hasn't happened at all! Sherwood's production is still wonderful – and, if anything, maybe less showy, or more soulful, or less moody – just something that seems to let the work of the group come through with energy that's wonderfully warm and organic, while still resonating with plenty of touches that will make longtime label fans proud! Vocals are shared between Charlie Eskimo Fox and Mr Magoo, and the set also features guest appearances from Prince Far I and Daddy Freddy – on titles that include "That's More Like It" "Jubilee Clock", "Swiftly", "Stonebridge Warrior", "Crown Hill Road", "The People's Sound", and "Whatever It Takes". Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99 29.99
A huge amount of work from the French duo of David Jisse and Dominique Marge – two singers who come together here in surprisingly hip ways – very much their own mode of the time, and quite different than some of the more commercial French pop of the period! A few years before, and these guys might have been a folk duo – but instead, they seem to take the bohemian inspiration of that generation and blend it with a whole host of hip styles – bits of jazz at some points, Brazilian elements at others, groovier soul sometimes, and maybe even a bit of the more experimental styles you'd hear from the team of Areski & Brigitte Fontaine! This 2CD set presents the complete work of the duo – a massive 48 tracks that are a huge musical discovery – work that includes material from a variety of singles and albums, and even one obscure recording done with Luc Ferrari. Titles include "Nemo", "Juliette", "Tu Vas Je Vais", "Et Se Reveiller", "Petit Hommage Au Jazz", "Retrospective", "Sirop D'Orgeat", "Piegon Vole", "Mimi Tant Pis", "Cache Cache", "Mamie Nina", "Babar", "Oh Les Enfants", "Tu M'Fais Rever", and "Ces Mots Qui Te Touchent". Jesse Ed DavisJesse Ed Davis/Ululu ... CD
Atco/Wounded Bird, 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Early solo work by Jesse Ed Davis – two albums in a single set! The self-titled Jesse Ed Davis set is one of a few records as a leader ever issued by the guitarist – a player who worked on countless other albums by big names in the late 60s and early 70s – but who has a very special flavor on his own! Davis is maybe best remembered as an important native American musician on the scene at the time – but his work here stands strongly with that of some of his hipper contemporaries – such as Eric Clapton, Leon Russel, and Gram Parsons – all of whom make an appearance here! Titles include the completely sublime "Golden Sun Goddess", worth the price of the album alone – plus "Tulsa County", "Every Night Is Saturday Night", "Crazy Love", "Reno Street Incident", and "Washita Love Child". Ululu has Jesse working with a number of his famous friends – including Leon Russell and Mac (Dr John) Rebennack – both of whose work the album owes a lot to. Jesse's got a down-home approach to his work – and sings a set of original tunes, plus versions of tracks by Merle Haggard, Leon Russell, Levon Helm, and Taj Mahal – which should give you a good idea of his frame of reference. Titles include "White Line Fever", "My Captain", "Sue Me Sue You Blues", "Ululu", "Alcatraz", and "Strawberry Wine". CD

Hi Hat, 1988. Used 2CD ... $12.99
A mighty strong live set from Miles Davis – especially given that he could sometimes be a bit spotty in concert at this point in his career – a double-length set recorded in Melbourne in 1988, with bold solos from the leader, and a great performance from a group that includes Kenny Garret on saxes and flute, Joe McCreary on guitar, Robert Irving III and Adam Holzman on keyboards, Benny Rietveld on bass, Ricky Wellman on drums, and Marilyn Mazur on percussion! The recording is great, and Miles has some really powerful passages on the album – and the music covers the full range of styles that Davis was touching on during the 80s – from his reborn Columbia years, to the later Tutu material. 18 tracks in all – and titles include "Heavy Metal", "Time After Time", "Tutu", "The Senate/You & Me", "New Blues", "Perfect Way", "In A Silent Way/Intruder", "Movie Star", "Splatch", and "Portia". One of the heaviest boxes in the Miles Davis Bootleg Series – and maybe one of the best so far – as the set captures Davis at a really pivotal moment – first working with the tenor of George Coleman in his Quintet, then later with the great Wayne Shorter! Coleman's on the 1963 material, Shorter on the 1964 sessions – and throughout, the rest of the group is that superb lineup that features the young Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – all really helping Miles to transform the face of jazz! The set features over four hours of unreleased music – a treasure trove of French performances that include the group's 1963 appearance at the Festival Mondial Du Jazz in Antibes – on full shows recorded on 26th, 27th, and 28th of July. Some of the most jazz-based work we've ever heard from keyboardist Mark De Clive-Lowe – continuing a progression that's been taking place over the past decade or so – to a point where the musician is turning out a record to rival the classics of some of the 70s giants who influenced his sound in the first place! Mark plays Fender Rhodes, piano, and other keyboards in the company of bassist Andrea Lombardini and drummer Tommaso Cappellato – on live tracks that are full of energy and life, driven with strong rhythms, and have lots of strong solos over the top. We've loved the music of Mark De Clive-Lowe for many years – and he's really rewarded us with a continuing evolution of his sound and style – to a point where a record like this is nothing that we might have expected over a decade ago! The set's a live jazz performance, but still graced with some of the more cosmic touches from Mark's electronic years – and the keyboardist plays both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – amidst a group that also includes the great Carlos Nino on percussion, Josh Johnson on alto and flute, Brandon Eugene Owens on bass, and Brandon Combs on drums – a very soulful combo who are more than willing to follow the leader on his spiritual musical journey! And the set's definitely got a spiritual vibe – tracks that spin out with inspiration from De Clive-Lowe's earlier life in Japan – but given a more contemporary, soulful style – really glowing in a way that resonates with the image on the cover. The set also features guest work from Teodross Avery on tenor on two tracks – and titles include "Bushido 1", "Memories Of Nanzenji", "Asa No Yume", "Niten Ichi", "Akatombo", and "Mizugaki". CD

Beat (Italy), 1983. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A sweet little rumble in the Bronx, scored here by Francesco De Masi – the Italian composer who gave us so many great cop and crime soundtracks in the 70s! The vibe here follows strongly from that work, but updates things slightly with a bit of a shift towards 80s keyboards and production – never too much, and still with that richness that Francesco always gives us – a sign that unlike others, he isn't ready to ditch the full orchestra in favor of just a set of keyboards! Yet there's still plenty of keyboards used in the larger setting, and plenty of fuzzy guitar too – both carving out the action on a set of shorter tunes that add up here to a whopping 77 minutes of music in all. Dego is fantastic here, and maybe more strongly in song-based territory than on recent records – thanks to some really strong vocals from Samii on a fair bit of the album's tracks! The singer really helps to give the music some focus – taking the amazing energy of Dego's beats, basslines, and keyboards – and really helping them soar even more fully to the cosmos with her lyrical touches – a soulful addition that really makes for a wonderful record overall! There's still a few excellent instrumental tracks too – the kind of explorations we've heard on recent 12" releases – and titles include "Catch The Sun", "Don't Stall", "Proxima Centauri", "Warp 7", "Start Again", "Jubilation Light Years Away", "En Route", and "Take Me Away". A soundtrack that's a sexy and playful as you might guess from the cover – done by Giacomo Dell'Orso for a late 70s Italian comedy, and handled with a number of short tracks that add up to a fair bit of music by the time the record is done! Some tunes follow the whimsical main theme on a loping keyboard line, while others serve up gentler orchestrations that almost go back to an earlier era of Italian scoring – especially when a wordless female vocal slinks into the mix and gives things a more serious vibe. There's lots of interplay between the two different modes, and the set features a total of 31 tracks in all – the first-ever release of the full scope of music for the film! CD
