A really pivotal album from XTC – a set that still has the group able to deliver the kind of tight, catchy work that made their early singles so great – but one that also really has them expanding out into a group who really understand how to put together an album the right way too! It's that quality that really helped XTC not only outlast some of their British contemporaries, but also reach out to a wider audience with a well-crafted set like this – full of gems that include "Knuckle Down", "Fly On the Wall", "Down In The Cockpit", "All Of A Sudden", "Yacht Dance", "English Roundabout", "Snowman", "Jason & The Argonauts", "No Thugs In Our House", "Runaways", "Ball & Chain", and "Senses Working Overtime". ✨✧ XTCSkylarking (longbox edition) ... CD
Virgin, 1986. Used ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful later work from XTC – a record that has the group really reveling in that new pastoral sensibility they unlocked with Mummer – on songs that are more slowed down than at their start, with great use of acoustic instrumentation too – all with this well-crafted sense of songwriting that almost seems to preface some of the work to come by groups like High Llamas or Cardinal! There's so many folks who are slavish to the early years of XTC that they often miss the beauty of a record like this – a really cohesive whole that's given some superb production by Todd Rundgren in one of his best 80s moments. Titles include "Dear God", "Dying", "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul", "Big Day", "Another Satellite", "That's Really Super Supergirl", "The Meeting Place", "Summer's Cauldron", and "1000 Umbrellas". CD

✨✧ XTCMummer (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Geffen, 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really beautiful record from XTC – one that seemed to unlock a slightly deeper spirit in the songwriting of Andy Partridge, and which also introduced some vaguely pastoral elements the group never had at the start! The style here is a bit hard to describe easily – still as catchy as before, but not for a catchy-for-catchy's sake – as the songwriting has strengthened, as has the group's presentation of the music – maybe in part because of the maturity of Steve Nye's production. One of our favorites by the group – with titles that include "Beating Of Hearts", "Love On A Farmboy's Wages", "Deliver Us From The Elements", "In Loving Memory", "Ladybird", "Me & The Wind", and "Human Alchemy". VariousAutonomy – The Productions Of Martin Rushent ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
A much-needed look at the production genius of Martin Rushent – a UK studio genius who started out in punk, then really helped the scene find new sounds and styles as the 80s moved in! Rushent is sometimes confused with the other great Martin of the period – producer Martin Hannett – and although his style is a bit different, there is a similarity – as Rushent, like Hannett, is a bit of an outsider, and really takes a fresh approach to recording the news music of the moment – never trying to drape it in older styles from previous eras, which really allows some of the crispness of the younger acts to really shine through! As the 80s move in, Rushent also shows a great ear for some of the right electronic touches, yet never in a way that was overly commercial – a balance that really comes out strongly on the second half of the set. As with other entries in this great producer series from Ace, the notes are fantastic – really digging deep into each track, with a 19 title set list that includes "Autonomy" by The Buzzcocks, "Hard Times" by Human League, "Homicide" by 999, "Hold On" by Ian Gomm, "Kiss Me Deadly" by Generation X, "Get A Grip On Yourself" by The Stranglers, "Tonight" by Rachel Sweet, "Guitar Beat" by The Raybeats, "I Could Be Happy (Martin Rushent rmx)" by Altered Images, "A Way You'll Never Be (12" version)" by Leisure Process, "Working Girl" by The Members, "Beneath The Blue Sky" by The Go Gos, "Breakfast" by The Associates, "Steamhammer Sam" by Intaferon, "Je Suis Passee (7" version)" by Hard Corps, "The Big Sweep (club mix)" by Then Jericho, and "Are You Receiving Me" by XTC. ✨✧ DamnedStrawberries ... LP
Bronze (UK), 1982. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A great little record from The Damned – even if the set does have them very far away from their punkish roots! Yet like some of the best of their contemporaries, the group grew up fast – shed a bit of anger, learned how to play their instruments, and really developed a way with a tune – an asset that you'll hear here right from the very first note! The songwriting is smart, but sensitive too – and with a slight edge at times, there's almost an evolution to the group's sound that's similar to XTC over the same stretch of time – save for the fact that the guitars are sometimes a bit more ferocious! Captain Sensible's definitely making himself felt more here than earlier – even singing on a few of the best songs too – in a set that includes "Ignite", "Generals", "Stranger On The Town", "The Dog", "Gun Fury", "Life Goes On", "Don't Bother Me", and "Under The Floor Again". ✨✧ Darlene LoveIt's Christmas Of Course ... CD
Shout Factory, 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the first ladies of Christmas pop is back in fine form here – singing soulful versions of a host of "neoclassics" – contemporary Holiday tunes from the past decade or two! Darlene Love's been remembered strongly year after year for her annual Holiday performance on David Letterman – and the CD's almost a "thanks" to her newer fans from the show, as it offers up a winder range of her talents. But even over and above her previous fame, or contemporary holiday presence, the CD's quite noteworthy in its attempt to bring some fresh tunes into the Christmas canon – songs originally recorded by John Lennon, The Pretenders, XTC, James Brown, Tom Petty, and others as special Holiday singles. Titles include "2000 Miles", "Christmas Wish", "Who Took The Merry Out Of Christmas", "Please Come Home For Christmas", "Night Of Peace", "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)", "Thanks For Christmas", "Christmas Must Be Tonight", and "Santa Claus Goes Straight To The Ghetto". ✨✧ VariousGus Dudgeon Production Gems ... CD

Gus Dudgeon may not be a household name in the annals of rock and roll – but he was a British studio genius whose talents touched more than a few of the more groundbreaking records of the London scene – with an especially great impact on the ever-changing sounds of the late 60s/early 70s generation! Dudgeon's story is told here in a richly detailed essay, packed with record covers and vintage images – all in support of a set list that mixes together hits and lesser-known gems, all to tell the tale of Gus' genius in the studio! Titles include "Mr Armageddon" by The Locomotive, "She's Not There" by The Zombies, "My Family" by Joan Armatrading, "Tokoloshe Man" by John Kongos, "Eye To Eye" by Audience, "Sixty Years On" by Elton John, "Boredom" by Tea & Sympathy, "Space Oddity (UK single version)" by David Bowie, "Oh How She Changed" by The Strawbs, "I'm The Urban Spaceman" by Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" by Elton John & John Lennon, "Run For Home" by Lindisfarne, "The Disappointed" by XTC, "Halfway Hotel" by Voyager, and "Fool (single edit)" by Chris Rea.
