✨✧ Shamek Farrah & Sonelius SmithWorld Of The Children (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An amazing session of spiritual soul jazz – and one of the rarest albums on Strata East! Shamek Farrah's soulful alto is matched with the free spiritual piano of Sonelius Smith, for a totally memorable session that virtually defines the essence of the Strata East sound! The music is free, but not too free; lyrical, but never indulgent; and always turning over with a fresh sense of imagination, and a soaring groove that's very much in the classic Strata East mode! The album also features Joseph Gardner on trumpet, Kiyoto Fuiwara on bass, Freddie Wren on drums, and Tony Waters on percussion – plus Milton Suggs, who performs a short bass solo entitled "Milt". Other longer tracks include "The World Of The Children", "Conversation Piece", and "People Puttin' People Through Changes". LP, Vinyl record album

Lawrence Hilton JacobsLawrence Hilton Jacobs ... LP
ABC, 1978. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Although he's always best remembered as Freddy "Boom Boom" Washington from Welcome Back Kotter, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs was pretty darn ubiquitous during the mid-70s! He was in more than a few movies (Youngblood, Cooley High, etc), and he even recorded a few soul albums – like this one, which features some nice production work by Lamont Dozier that more than makes up for Freddie's lack of conviction as a soul singer. At the best moments, the record reminds us of some of Lamont's strident grooving soul work for ABC – and titles include "Time Machine", "Larry's Theme", "Mister DJ", "Holdin On", and "Fly Away". Lawrence Kumpf, Don Cherry, & OthersOrganic Music Societies – Don Cherry ... Book
Blank Forms, 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 20.00
A much-needed look at a crucial chapter in the career of trumpeter Don Cherry – his overseas time on the European scene, where Don experimented with new organic music forms, alternatives to mainstream society, and a much larger cultural milieu than jazz! Cherry's organic music period has been captured on a few key recordings, but the larger activity of that moment spans a much wider space – finally given its full due here in a massive book that brings together writings, interviews, photographs, and countless pieces of artwork – most by Moki Cherry, whose creations you might recognize from some of Don's album Covers. The set is edited and introduced by Lawrence Kumpf, but also features work by Don, Moki, and Neneh Cherry – plus Alice Bailey, Keith & Rita Knox, Ben Young, and others – stretched out for almost 500 pages, with full color images throughout the entire book – drawings, paintings, posters, and lots lots more! Azar LawrenceElementals ... CD
High Note, 2018. Used ... $9.99
Saxophonist Azar Lawrence has been having a hell of a renaissance in recent years – and a record like this only helps move that process forward – providing a mighty large feather in Azar's ever-growing cap! The album's a great one from start to finish – a evolution of the spiritual vibe that Lawrence had in the 70s, with maybe some slight Latin currents in the rhythms – all rolling along with this vibe that's soaring and freewheeling, but never too far outside – just boldly stepping into the cosmos, amidst some great new tunes by Lawrence himself, and a few more by pianist Benito Gonzales – whose work here is a key part of the album's sound! The group also features Jeff Littleton on bass, Munyungo Jackson on percussion, and Marvin Smitty Smith on some tremendous drums – on titles that include "African Chant", "La Bossa", "Eye Of The Needle", "Brazilian Girls", "Koko", "Sing To The World", and "Solar Winds". Riza/Tidal Waves, 1985. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 26.99 On February 26, 2022
An obscure set from Azar Lawrence – self-produced and self-arranged, in a smooth modern soul mode that's kind of an 80s extension of his work in the 70s for Prestige. There's a definite R&B groove on most tracks, and vocalist Coco Evans sings on 2 of the album's 8 tracks. Lawrence is on reeds, and other players in the group include Leo Nocentelli on guitar and James Gadson on drums. Titles include "Keep It Hot", "Your Love Is Keeping Me Alive", "Magic In The Night", "Shadow Dancing", "One More Time", and "Inside Stuff". LP, Vinyl record album

Josh LawrenceColor Theory ... CD
Posi tone, 2017. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
Maybe the first album we've ever seen from trumpeter Josh Lawrence – and a set that will definitely have us looking out for more! Lawrence composed almost every tune on the set, and works with a sense of color that really lives up to the title – on lines that are sometimes nicely compressed and subtle, and blown on flugelhorn – sometimes bold and vibrant, soaring out in the company of an excellent group that includes Caleb Curtis on some especially nice alto and flute! The keyboards shift throughout – as Orrin Evans plays acoustic piano on five titles, and Adam Faulk handles Fender Rhodes on seven more – creating a nice shift in color that furthers the spirit of the tunes, driven by rhythm work from Madison Rast on bass and Anwar Marshall on drums. Titles include "Black", "An Uptown Romance", "Yellow", "Presence", "The Conceptualizer", and "Green". CD

Posi tone, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
A really wonderful album from trumpeter Josh Lawrence – a very strong-voiced talent who's got a way of being bright and sharp at the same time, and who can always bring lots of his own compositional strengths to bear as well! The core group is a quartet – with Lawrence blowing beautifully over piano from Zaccai Curtis, bass from Luques Curtis, and drums from Anwar Marshall – and the set also features some great alto from Caleb Curtis on two tracks, balancing out the sound of Josh in this strongly soulful spirit! Brian Charette brings some organ to the album's final track – a great remake of the Earth Wind & Fire tune "That's The Way Of The World" – and all other titles are Lawrence originals, with tunes that include "We're Happiest Together", "Composition #2", "Wind", "Earth", "Sugar Hill Stroll", and "Sunset In Santa Barbara". Lawrence Marable Quartet feat James ClayTenorman ... CD
Jazz West/Universal (Japan), 1956. New Copy ... $13.99
The only album to ever feature drummer Lawrence Marable as the leader of a group – and a cooking little hardbop set that showed the world that LA wasn't just a source for cool jazz in the 50s! The record is quite different than anything you'd hear from Chet Baker or Shorty Rogers – much more a Blue Note or Prestige-styled session, thanks in large part to the bold work of James Clay on tenor – who's noted here in the title, but is also an undeniable force in the music, and part of a wave of Texas talent that was really helping to transform the Cali sound in the 50s. Other players include the great Sonny Clark on piano – making a strong pre-Blue Note appearance – and the equally great Jimmy Bond on bass. Titles include "Airtight", "Easy Living", "Minor Meeting", "Marbles", and "Three Fingers North". CD

A pretty hip set of big band arrangements – very much along the lines of early 50s Stan Kenton, with a tight swing, but a nicely modern undercurrent as well! The arrangements, as the title indicates, are all by Gerry Mulligan – and in addition to the piano of Elliot Lawrence, players include Al Cohn and Hal McKusick on saxes, Nick Travis on trumpet, Eddie Bert and Paul Sheldon on trombones, Buddy Saunders on bass, and Don Lamond on drums – all players with a great ear for mixing up tightness on the heads, and a more laidback groove during the solo moments. Tracks are short and angularly arranged – and titles include "But Not For Me", "Happy Hooligan", "My Silent Love", "Mullenium", and "Bweebida Bwobbida". CD

Perception, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Incredible stuff from the jazz underground of Newark! This is one of the rarest albums ever recorded by jazz organist Larry Young – cut for the tiny Perception label during the early 70s, and featuring some of the cream of the New Jersey jazz underground. The album's got playing that bridges a number of Young's different styles – from his straighter soul jazz work at Blue Note, to his harder jamming with Santana and John McLaughlin, to his more fusion oriented albums for Arista. James Blood Ulmer's on guitar, but there's also a large ensemble of excellent players, and lots of other percussion and cool instrumentation that really gives the album an "out there" sound! Titles include "Sunshine Fly Away", "Saudia", "Hello Your Quietness", and "Khalid Of Space". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Hampshire & FoatSaint Lawrence ... CD
Athens Of The North (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The duo of Warren Hampshire and Greg Foat keep on getting more and more interesting as the years go on – to a point where they seem to be carving out a really special place in music that might well be a genre of their own! The music here represents a wonderful evolution of their skills together – sounds that are still steeped in older elements of jazz, funk, and other modes – but which have also taken on a new sort of complexity, yet all without ever losing the organic, immediate approach that makes them so compelling! There's a blend here that's as if an Italian soundtrack of the 70s used spiritual jazz for its instrumentation – long flowing tracks that unfold with a gentle sort of beauty – with Hampshire on guitars and percussion, Foat on organ, guitar, piano, and kalimba – and other instrumentation on bells, gongs, flute, and percussion. Titles include "The Solitude Of Certitudes", "Woody Bay", "Out On The Side", "The Undercliff", "The Snake & The Weasel", and "The Clock Tower". CD

B Astrid Daley & Adam Parfrey, edsSin-A-Rama – Sleaze Sex Paperbacks Of The Sixties (expanded edition) ... Book
Feral House, 2005. New Copy ... $18.99 25.95
The first book we've ever seen to fully do justice to the world of porn paperbacks in the 60s – that insanely profitable underground that existed in a space between girlie mags and cinematic pornography – when words enough were plenty to titillate the libido of a reader! Many of the publishers were secretive, distribution was often controlled by the mob, and some of the writers were bigger stars working under fake names for ready cash – all to create a surprisingly rich tapestry of work that's mostly been lost to the shifting sands of time! The large volume features many essays on different topics within the field – alongside an insane amount of full color images reproducing the paperbacks in all their glory – images that are far wilder than the one on the front of the book, and which make reading the text a complete delight throughout. The whole thing is way more than the usual fluff books that just present lurid paperbacks – as the writing is great, full of knowledge, and really gets at the heart of the matter – with profiles on writers that include Donald Westlake, Lawrence Block, Eric Stanton, Gene Bilbrew, Ron Haydock (aka Vin Saxon), and even Ed Wood – and contributions from Miriam Linna, Lydia Lunch, Robert Silverberg, and others. 327 pages, softcover, and full color throughout. Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music – The Definitive Arthur Russell Sleeping Bag Recordings ... CD
Sleeping Bag/Get On Down, 1981. New Copy 2 CDs ... $9.99 19.99
An incredible album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! – fleshed out and expanded more than ever before by Sleeping Bag and Get On Down Records! The group's core sound is a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! This 2CD box set edition is amazing – coming in a heavy-duty box with each disc in an oversized gatefold style sleeve – and it includes more Arthur Russell collaborative and/or pseudonymous material for Sleeping Bag with or as Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn and Indian Ocean. Other tracks include "School Bell/Treehouse" (Indian Ocean), "You Can't Hold Me Down (Extended Version)" (Felix), "5 Minutes (R-r-r Radio Mix)" (Bonzo Goes To Washington) and more. Also includes a nice booklet of photos, artwork and artist testimonials – plus notes by Russell biographer Tim Lawrence. CD

The meeting of two classic talents late in their careers – in a setting that's ideal to bring out all the complexity of their well-honed genius! The approach of the album is mostly an Ellington one – as the group features some of Duke's stalwarts, like Ray Nance, Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Lawrence Brown, and Aaron Bell – but Coleman Hawkins gets plenty of space as the main soloist on each number, alongside Duke, who also solos strongly on piano! Verve (Japan), 1959. New Copy ... $13.99
A great little session that builds on the strength of Johnny Hodges' small group 50s sessions for Verve – and which lets Duke Ellington in on some of the action! The format is nicely stripped-down throughout – featuring Hodges in sextet and septet formation with players who include Ben Webster on tenor, Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Les Spann on flute, Lawrence Brown on trombone, and Jo Jones on drums. Surprisingly, Duke's actually only on piano on three tracks on the album – Billy Strayhorn handles keys on the other – but the session's still a great example of small combo Ellingtonia at its best, the special way Ellington players could extrapolate his ideas into a leaner formation on a record like this! Orrin Evans is a hell of a pianist, but he's also a hell of a bandleader too – stepping out here with his excellent Captain Black Big Band – an always-great unit that shows off a whole new dimension of Evans' mighty talents! The music is rich and bold right from the start – and clearly, the leader is much more of a mutual participant in the proceedings than the boss – as the horns alone have these individual flourishes and power as a whole that's really amazing – a sense of color and richness that's very distinct from Orrin's piano, and which maybe gets even more presence in the mix. Players include Todd Bashore, Immanuel Wilkins, and Caleb Wheeler Curtis on alto saxes; Josh Lawrence, Sean Jones, and Thomas Marriott on trumpets; David Gibson, Reggie Watkins, and Stafford Hunter on trombones; Troy Roberts on tenor; Stacy Dillard on soprano; Luques Curtis and Madison Rast on bass; Jason Brown and Mark Whitfield Jr on drums; and Evans on piano. Don't think "recital" in terms of a snoozy session of chamber work – as the album's a real gem from Tal Farlow – one of the rarest 50s sessions by this groundbreaking jazz guitarist! The tracks are long, and the record's cut in an easily grooving style – with help from a very cool west coast lineup that includes Bill Perkins on tenor, Bob Gordon on baritone sax, Bob Eneveldsen on trombone, Monty Budwig on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums – a very unusual group for a Verve session, and a piano-less one too! Farlow's tone is excellent – and you'll also hear some wonderful work from Perkins, who could really blow with a lot of soul at this point. Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1986. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99 About February 10, 2022
The first full album that Felt cut for Creation Records – and a tremendous selection of timeless pop tunes that shows that their move to the label was the best thing they ever did! The band's sound is tightened up considerably from their Cherry Red years – compressing organ solos, guitar passages, and Lawrence's introspective vocals into tunes that were filled with a sort of timeless sense of pop – never cloying, never witless – just magically "Felt-like", with an aura that was all its own. One of the finest rock records of the past 30 years, and a real bright spot in the 80s! Titles include "Down But Not Yet Out", "September Lady", "Gather Up Your Wings & Fly", "Hours Of Darkness Have Changed My Mind", and "Rain Of Crystal Spires". CD

The last album that Felt recorded for Cherry Red – and maybe their biggest early success too! The tracks are shorter and tighter than earlier releases – still very much concerned with the group's magical interplay of guitar and keyboards, but also going for a mode that really pushes Lawrence forward as a front man – singing in one of the most enigmatic pop voices of the 80s, with a style that stretches back to Dylan, but which also has a colder, more self-conscious style of the post-punk years. Titles include the group's seminal "Primitive Painters", a duet with Liz Frasier – plus the tracks "The Day The Rain Came Down", "Scarlet Servants", "My Darkest Light Will Shine", "Black Ship In The Harbour", and "Southern State Tapestry". Adrian Borland produced, and the tunefulness of the songs really comes to the forefront – all while still providing a perfect showcase for the lyrical and vocal talents of Lawrence, set up beautifully amidst the swirling Hammond lines that made their Creation material so distinct! Pure genius from a group who kept on growing strongly over the relatively short span of their career – maybe under-sung heroes at the time of their release, at least on this side of the Atlantic – but one of the few truly classic groups we can think of from the decade, at least with a recorded legacy this strong! The songs are as creatively distinct as anything every put forth by Morrissey and The Smiths – but in a very unique sort of way, with the guidance of mainman Lawrence firmly guiding the sound with his vocals amidst the wonderful songswirl of Hammond organ and guitar. Titles include "Apple Boutique", "Ivory Past", "Until The Fools Get Wise", "Bitter End", "How Spook Got Her Man", "Christopher Street", "Under A Pale Light", and "Don't Die On My Doorstep". CD

FeltPoem Of The River ... CD
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1987. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99 About February 10, 2022
A gem of a record from Felt – one that has them complicating the sound they first brought to the Creation Records label – stretching out some of the songs a bit, and working with art rock legend Mayo Thompson of the Red Krayola in the production booth! The use of organ continues to be wonderfully strong – really giving the group a punctuation to their songs that their earlier material never had – but there's also still that great sense of overall sound that always made them so unique, and which works perfectly for the creative songwriting talents of Lawrence. Tracks include "Declaration" "Silver Plane", "She Lives By The Castle", "Stained Glass Windows In The Sky", "Riding On The Equator", "Dark Red Birds". CD

FeltTrain Above The City ... CD
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1988. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99 About February 10, 2022
The title's got a subtle sort of poetry, one that's really reflected in the music – especially as this time around, they eschew their familiar organ and guitar for lots of jazzy work on piano and vibes – served up here in an all-instrumental mode! The album's not entirely jazz, but maybe not far off either – and the vibes are handled both by Gary Ainge and Martin Duffy, the latter of whom plays a fair bit of piano as well. Usual mainman Lawrence seems to have nothing to do with the record – all songs are by Ainge and Duffy too – and titles include "Train Above The City", "Run Chico Run", "Press Softly On The Brakes Holly", "Spectral Morning", "Seahorses On Broadway", and "On Weegee's Sidewalk". Dexter GordonDaddy Plays The Horn (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Bethlehem, 1955. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99 On January 28, 2022
One of Dexter Gordon's proudest moments of the 50s – a rock-solid session for Bethlehem – easily one of the best-remembered hardbop sides from the label's California years! The album's got a relaxed, free-blown sound that's quite nice – with Dex in the lead on tenor, supported by the trio of Kenny Drew on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums. Gordon's perhaps not as fully imaginative as he would become in the 60s, but his sound and control is still great throughout – and the rhythm section really helps knock this one out of the park. Titles include versions of "Darn That Dream", "Autumn In New York", "You Can Depend On Me", and "Confirmation", plus two originals "Number Four" and "Daddy Plays The Horn". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chico HamiltonDealer ... LP
Impulse, Mid 60s. Very Good- Gatefold ... $29.99
One of Chico's classic recordings for Impulse, and a weird batch of tracks that have an off-beat sound to them that's hard to categorize. The group includes Ernie Hayes on organ, Arnie Lawrence on alto, Larry Coryell on guitar, and a guest appearance by Archie Shepp on piano. Tracks include "For Mods Only", "A Trip", "Baby, You Know", and "Larry Of Arabia". Very groovy, and with a wonderful array of offbeat influences running through the groove! LP, Vinyl record album

Chico HamiltonPeregrinations ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $13.99
One more amazing chapter in the mighty development of drummer Chico Hamilton – a killer 70s session for Blue Note – and a record that goes way beyond his earlier experiments of the 50s, modal grooves of the 60s, and funk work for the Flying Dutchman label! The style here is fusion, but way fresher than the usual type – neither jamming rock-styled, nor mellow and smooth – and instead always tickled by Hamilton's sense of a unique rhythm, and his continued great ear for inventive use of reeds – in this case handled by Arthur Blythe on alto and Arnie Lawrence on soprano and tenor sax. The set's also got Steve Turre on bass and trombone, and both Barry Finnerty and Joe Beck on electric guitars – but the real genius is Chico himself, who handled arrangements and wrote most of the album's great tracks. Titles include the exotic number "Abdullah & Abraham" – plus "Andy's Walk", "Peregrinations", "It's About That Time", "Sweet Dreams", "On & Off", "Little Lisa", and "Space For Stacy". CD

Gene HarrisIn A Special Way ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $13.99
Funky, soulful, and completely sublime work from keyboardist Gene Harris – working here with some great help from Jerry Peters on arrangement and production – in a style that makes the album one of Harris' most compelling sets of the 70s! The backings are full, but tight too – and in addition to Gene's own sweet work on keyboards, the set's also got some massive drums from Harvey Mason and James Gadson – both of whom really help things crackle at the bottom! Other instrumental highlights include more keyboards from Jerry Peters, tenor from Azar Lawrence, and trombone from George Bohannon – plus guitar from Lee Ritenour too. There's a bit of vocals on the set – mostly a soul chorus sort of mode that works perfect with Peters' groovy arrangements – and titles include "Love For Sale", "Theme For Relana", "Rebop", "Zulu", and "Soft Cycles". Johnny HodgesJohnny Hodges Live In Paris – 18 Mars 1961 ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1961. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A really great live set from alto genius Johnny Hodges – a set that's right up there with some of his best studio albums on Verve at the time! As with those records, Johnny's taking a slight sidestep from the world of Duke Ellington here – working with similar material and familiar players, but also really stretching out on these beautiful solos that focus on his warm, raspy charm on the alto – that quality that made Hodges as important to the sound of mid 50s jazz as Ben Webster or Lester Young on the tenor! The group's a septet, and other players include Lawrence Brown on trombone, Harry Carney on baritone, Al Williams on piano, and Ray Nance on cornet – on titles that include "All Of Me", "Blues For Madeline", "Solitude", "Mood Indigo", "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me", "Jeep's Blues", "Rockin In Rhythm, and a nice long take on "Perdido". Johnny HodgesPerdido ... LP
Norgran, Early 50s. Very Good ... $34.99
A stone cooker from Johnny Hodges – just the right kind of small group session to perfectly showcase his amazing sound on the alto sax! The group's a slightly unusual one – and features Arthur Clark on tenor, Harold Baker on trumpet, Lawrence Brown on trombone, Leroy Lovett on piano, and Louis Bellson on drums – all working with Hodges in a set of longer, more open tracks than some other Verve sides – with a really strong emphasis on solo space, in a way that makes Hodges tone sound even more delightful! Titles include "Blues For Basie", "Rose Room", "Perdido", "Mood Indigo", and "Squatty Roo" – plus a version of "This Love Of Mine", done with a vocal by Al Hibbler! LP, Vinyl record album

Kanye West808s & Heartbreak ... CD
Roc-A-Fella, 2008. Used ... $5.99
A darkness tinged departure for Kanye West – his electro hip hop soul tome 808s & Heartbreak! Kanye's albums are always newsworthy, but this one divides opinions as sharply as any major release of 2008. That said, we'll go on the record with some real love for this sometimes confounding, often brilliant batch of tracks. Kanye is mostly singing on this one, and brazenly flaunting the Auto-Tune vocal fad to a point in which he's basically daring you to hate on him for it – but the deep, dark and confessional storytelling and mostly downbeat tone of the songs offsets the arch trendiness almost completely. It's an interesting dichotomy, but it it works, giving some fairly morose songs a needed light touch. Ultimately, this is a brave record for Kanye recorded in a year that must have been truly wrenching for him emotionally – and it's not the kind of set that most people are going to love the first time they hear it. It took us a couple spins to soak it in, but we'll call it a success! Tracks include "Say You Will", "Welcome To Heartbreak", "Heartless", "Amazing", the hit "Love Lockdown", "Street Lights", "Coldest Winter" and more. CD

Robin KenyattaUntil ... CD
Vortex/Wounded Bird, 1968. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
One of the earliest albums as a leader from reedman Robin Kenyatta – and a set that's also one of his most compelling too! There's a definitely freer sound here than on some of Robin's smoother sets from the 70s – a vibe that's somewhere near the space of Impulse Records in the post-Coltrane years, and which is right at home on Atlantic's Vortex label subsidiary. A few tracks get surprisingly out, but always with a nice sense of focus, especially in the rhythms – and in addition to Kenyatta's own bold work on alto sax, the album features performances by Roswell Rudd on trombone, Mike Lawrence on trumpet, Walter Booker on bass, Fred Simmons on piano, and Horace Arnold on drums. The tunes have lots of sharp edges – almost Ayler-like at times, but more inside – and titles include "You Know How We Do", "Little Blue Devil", "This Year", and "Until". CD

Joe Lovano & Dave Douglas SoundprintsLive At Monterey Jazz Festival ... CD
Blue Note, 2015. Used ... $14.99
A really wonderful pairing of trumpeter Dave Douglas and tenorist Joe Lovano – working together here on some of the most adventurous material that either player has cut in years! The music is balanced evenly between a sense of rhythm and sense of freedom – with a vibe that's similar too, but not exactly in the same space as early Ornette Coleman at times – especially in the way the alto and trumpet come together – but which also has these other bold, forward-moving currents too – especially at the points when the group step into a few well-chosen songs from Wayne Shorter. The rest of the quintet is loose and very spontaneous – a great trio of Lawrence Fields on piano, Linda Oh on bass, and Joey Baron on drums – on titles that include "Weatherman", "Power Ranger", "Sound Prints", "Destination Unknown", and "To Sail Beyond The Sunset". Peter Owens (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $4.99 26.95
A really cool look at a label that was maybe one of the hippest things the Beatles ever did – the short-lived Zapple imprint – which was part of their main Apple label, but dedicated to more experimental work from a variety of musicians and writers! The imprint is perhaps best remembered as the home of more avant recordings by John & Yoko, and by George Harrison – but it also presented material by Allen Ginsberg, Charles Bukowski, Charles Olson, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and other key underground figures – a legacy that would have been enormous, had it continued. The book is put together by Zapple label manager Barry Miles – and includes loads of photos and images too – studio shots, ads, and a lot more elements that help bring this lost label to life once again! 272 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Benjamin MorkMechanical Piano ... LP
Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... $22.99 29.90
There's nothing too mechanical about the sound of the piano here – although at some level, there's also some very interesting mechanics involved in the project! The music started out when Benjamin Mork bought an old grand piano that had been painted blue – and rather than try to completely restore it, he instead sonically deconstructed it – placing microphones around the instrument, both inside and out – to capture sounds that are still very piano-based, but also have all these other sonic possibilities too! The result is a record of surprising beauty – maybe a bit in the territory of some of the more spacious Bugge Wesseltoft recordings in recent years, especially those that effortlessly mix acoustic and electric elements. Titles include "Argentina", "Etter Vi For", "Attover", "I Et Oyeblikk", "Kjor Forsiktig", and a very nice take on the Ryuichi Sakamoto tune "Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence". LP, Vinyl record album

New FacesStraight Forward ... CD
Posi tone, 2018. Used ... $6.99
The faces here aren't totally new – as some of them are already great leaders on their own, with strong recordings for the Posi-Tone label – but the group has the talents coming together in a wonderfully sharp setting – almost to their scene what the All For One combo was to a generation before! The lineup here is great – and includes Behn Gillece on vibes, Josh Lawrence on trumpet, Roxy Coss on tenor, Theo Hill on piano, Peter Brendler on bass, and Vinnie Sperrazza on drums – moving with that sort of sharp sense of arrangement we've really come to expect from their scene, but always with plenty of room for the solo voices to ring out loud and clear! As you'll know from these pages, we really love the vibes of Gillece, which sound excellent here next to Hill's piano – on titles that include "Happy Juice", "West Village", "Hush Puppy", "Vortex", "King Cobra", "Follow Suit", "Preachin'", and "I'm OK". A brilliant record and a big step for Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, at a point when he truly was stretching out creatively in a big way – seamlessly mixing classic electric jazz influences & modern electronic touches! Scott is on trumpet, his custom sirenette & reverse fluegelhorn, mixing earth-bound sounds and spacey atmosphere throughout – and the band includes Braxton Cook on alto, Lawrence Fields on piano and Rhodes, Corey King on trombone, and Corey Fonville and Joe Dyson Jr on a pretty impressive mix of drums and sampler atmosphere. It starts off strong with "Sunrise In Beijing", an impressive showcase for flautist Elena Pinderhughes, who really helps this one take flight over the spacey & stuttering percussion. Other tracks include "Twin", "Perspectives", "West Of The West", "Liberation Over Gangsterism", "Of A New Cool", "Tantric", "The Last Chieftain" and more. CD

Buddy TerryLean On Him ... LP
Mainstream, 1973. Very Good Gatefold ... $13.99
One of the fullest albums we've ever heard from saxophonist Buddy Terry – a set that has him blowing along with a set of soulful larger backings – sometimes with a bit of gospel overtones as well! The lineup on the album's pretty darn hip – players who include Larry Willis on electric piano, Jay Berliner on guitar, Ernie Hayes on organ, Wilbur Bascomb on Fender bass, Bernard Purdie on drums, and Lawrence Killian on percussion – plus added vocals from a group that includes Dee Dee Bridgewater, Alphonse Mouzon, and Peaches Wilson! Buddy arranges and conducts – and while his tenor and soprano get some space in the arrangements, the overall sound is more focused on the full spirit of the group. ✨✧ TwilightStill Loving You ... CD
Luv N' Haight, 1981. New Copy ... $5.99 16.98
A lost bit of Cali soul from the 80s – the first album from Twilight, not really a group, but more of a solo studio project from Lawrence Ross! Ross was a shift worker at General Mills, but had some free time to conceive his dream soul album during the twilight hours of the day – hence the name of the "group" –and after slaving away on his off hours to put the whole thing together, he recorded most of this set within the space of a week playing most of the instruments himself! A few other guest artists came in to round out the sound, but there's definitely a personal quality to the record that belies Ross' close association with the whole thing – carefully written tunes that could have challenged the mainstream, had they gotten bigger production, but which have a great deal of charm since they're done here in a more stripped-down, indie-styled way. Twilight has all the best aspects of soul acts of the time – some tight groovers that mix up boogie rhythms with some warmer Cali soul – and a few mellower cuts that benefit from some cool spacey keyboards. Titles include "Play My Game", "Scorpittiarus", "We'll Be Special", "Love's High", "You Know It's Me", "Love's The Way", "Straight To My Heart", and "Just A Kiss Away". CD

Killer work from one of THE big labels during the psychedelic generation – one of the few imprints to really take a chance on fresh new artists, and really let them do their thing in the studio! Vanguard may be known mostly as a folk label, and the company is now owned by the parent company of Lawrence Welk – but back in the late 60s, the company was very much at the forefront of musical changes in the US – and went out of their way to record artists that nobody else would touch! The result is a stunning legacy of funk records that really blow most bigger label work away – most of which is compiled here in this excellent collection. Some cuts are from rare albums, other from rare 45s – and titles include "Did You Have To Rub It In" by The Hi Five, "Getting Together" by The Third Power, "Where I'm At" by Notes From The Underground, "You Should Be More Careful" by Elizabeth, "Stoned Is" by Listening, "A Nickel's Worth Of Benny's Help" by The 31st Of February, "The Endless Tunnel" by Serpent Power, "Big Time Spender" by Frost, and "Hellhound" by The Far Cry. BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Righteous jazz, but with a bit of a funky twist too – a great selection of classics from the years when 60s soul jazz was reaching out with a new sense of pride and power, and finding a way embrace all of the musical changes that were coming its way! The music here is often by artists who might have been playing straighter standards, or bluesy organ numbers a few years before – but who here are set fire by the changes of the 60s – both at a musical level, and a political one – the latter in ways that resonate strongly even in the instrumental passages on the set! The title is a reference to a famous quote by Eldridge Cleaver, used often by The Black Panthers – and the set begins with Joe Henderson's number of the same name, "If You're Not Part Of The Solution You're Part Of The Problem" – and follows with "Let's Make Peace & Stop The War" by Funk Inc, "Bitches Brew" by Eddie Jefferson, "HNIC" by Harold Vick, "Tawhid" by Johnny Lytle, "John Coltrane" by Clifford Jordan, "Celestial Bodies" by Catalyst, "Warriors Of Peace" by Azar Lawrence, "Africans Unite" by Gary Bartz NTU Troop, and "Black Feeling" by Johnny Hammond Smith. All tracks are nice and long – and the set has a great mix of spiritual ideals with a few funky currents. CD

Light In The Attic, Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. Near Mint- 3LP Box Set ... $79.99
A pretty amazing collection of rare work from the Native American underground – not the late 60s/early 70s records that tried to cash in on growing pride for the Native American scene, but obscure Canadian sides that represent a rich array of sounds we've never heard before! The styles here are great – and run from folksy to trippy to surprisingly tuneful – and although the music spans a 20 year space, there's a really solid early 70s approach overall – with production that's never too slick, and a real sense of respect for the singer/songwriters who make the package so great. The whole thing's as much a book as it is a musical collection – as the notes are hugely expansive, over 120 pages with the CD set – and answer a huge amount of questions, and fill in a lot of background detail too. The set features 34 titles in all – with work by names we'd never heard before – Willie Dunn, Sugluck, Willie Thrasher, Lawrence Martin, William Tagoona, Sikmiut, Saddle Lake Drifting Cowboys, Morley Loon, Peter Frank, David Campbell, and others. A totally wonderful batch of cuts from the early years of Liberty Records, and related labels – cuts that really bristle with the kind of energy that was exploding in all sorts of styles on the LA scene at the end of the 50s! Liberty may not have the cred as Sun or Chess Records, but the company was really at the crossroads of music on the west coast, and had both the ears and the studio talent to really turn out some great singles at the time – often the sort of material that was very different than the vocals and mood music on its full length LPs. If you don't know this side of Liberty's legacy, you'll really in for a surprise – and even if you do, you'll still discover some overlooked gems in this 37 track set – presented complete with detailed notes on all the artists too. ✨✧ Duke Ellington & Johnny HodgesBlues Summit (Side By Side/Back To Back) ... LP
Verve, 1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little album that builds on the strength of Johnny Hodges' small group 50s sessions for Verve – and which lets Duke Ellington in on some of the action! The format is nicely stripped-down throughout – featuring Hodges in sextet and septet formation with players that include Ben Webster, Roy Eldridge, Les Spann, Lawrence Brown, and Jo Jones. And while Duke's actually only on piano on some of the tracks on the album (Billy Strayhorn handles keys on the others), the sessions are still a great example of small combo Ellingtonia at its best! Titles include "Ruint", "Stompy Jones", "Big Shoe", "Going Up", "Just A Memory", and "You Need to Rock". Added to the original album is a full bonus album here – done in a similar format, and titled Back To Back – with titles that include "Weary Blues", "Royal Garden Blues", "Loveless Love", "St Louis Blues", and "Wabash Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label promo. Cover has some light stains along the opening in back and tiny splits in the bottom seams, in nice shape otherwise.)

✨✧ Eddie HarrisLost Album Plus The Better Half ... CD
Collectables, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Incredible work by the great Eddie Harris – an album that was initially recorded for Vee Jay during his early tenure at the label, but not issued for years! The album's one of Eddie's greatest from the time – a really far-reaching blend of soul jazz, hardbop, and some of the more exotic influences running through the Chicago scene from whence he came. Two tracks on the album are especially long groovers – "Cuttin Out" and "Shakey Jake" – both in the 15 minute mark, and extended jammers with Ira Sullivan on trumpet, Bunky Green on alto, and Melvin Rhyne on organ. The first two tracks on the set feature Eddie in a lineup with Willie Pickens, Raphael Don Garrett, and Ira Sullivan – on the modal groovers "The Dancing Bull" and "Antidote". And the last 4 tracks on the CD are pulled from the album "Half & Half" – an 8 track release that initially featured 4 tunes with Eddie blowing with a vocal group, and these other 4 that have him working with a very hip group that includes Charles Stepney on piano, Melvin Jackson on bass, Joe Dorio on guitar, and Marshall Thompson on drums. Titles include "Half & Half", "KC Blues", "Lawrence Of Arabia", and "Yea Yea Yea". CD

✨✧ Gene HarrisIn A Special Way ... LP
Blue Note, 1976. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
✨✧ Joe HendersonKicker ... CD
Milestone/OJC, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key link between Joe Henderson's earlier years at Blue Note and his later, freer work for Milestone – recorded in a style that's got plenty of Blue Note hardbop touches, yet also done with a sense of freedom that you'd never expect from that label! Joe's grooving in a straight, yet angular mode – working with a sextet that include Mike Lawrence on trumpet, Grachan Moncur III on trombone, Kenny Barron on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – all in a mix of soulful, exotic, and slight Latin styles – a sound that's clearly influenced by the work of Horace Silver at times, but carried off beautifully by Joe in a bold, young tenor voice. Titles include the classic "Mamacit", plus "Mo Joe", "O Amor Em Paz", "The Kicker", "If", and "Nardis". CD

Columbia, 1977. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bundle of soul from Freddie Hubbard – one that has him blowing beautifully over full arrangements from Bert DeCoteux – the 70s super-soul maestro who really brings a new sound to Hubbard's music! The style's a bit smoother than other Freddie albums of the time, but still really great – a wonderful plenty of his well-timed, well-punctuated work on trumpet with warm grooves supplied by Bert – filled with instrumentation that includes David T Walker on guitar, Ernie Watts on sax and flute, Azar Lawrence on tenor, David Garfield on keyboards, and even Dorothy Ashby on flute. Titles include "Portrait Of Jenny", "Rainy Day Song", "Bundle Of Joy", "From Now On", "From Behind", and "Rahsaan". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Robin KenyattaUntil ... LP
Vortex, 1968. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Melba MooreNever Say Never ... LP
Capitol, 1983. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Melba Moore at the height of her 80s powers – stepping out here with a good bit of help from Kashif, who sings a bit and plays keyboards – along with Paul Lawrence Jones, whose keys also shine brightly on the set! There's a nicely jazzy undercurrent to some of the best numbers – that flowing 80s groove style that's never too overdone, and which does a good job of reigning in some of Melba's too-commercial tendencies – and the quality of the record is a great example of the way that Moore could hold things together, even when reaching for a larger audience. Titles include "Lean On Me", "Lovin Touch", "Never Say Never", "Love Me Right", "Keepin My Lover Satisfied", and "Got To Have Your Love". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ PortisheadThird ... CD
Mercury, 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A decade since their previous effort, and 14 years since their previous masterpiece, Portishead returns with Third – and, oh, what a mindblowing third act. The first thing you'll realize about Third is that it's not Dummy Part 3 – a welcome and surprising trait – but it does take their earlier way with a spooky, brooding and ominous framework to new dimensions. Secondly, there's no obvious single – it's to be taken as a whole. Beth Gibbons's vocals are as soul wrenching as ever, and an overall stark, melancholic beauty connects Portishead '08 to the old stuff, but they go deeper. Some bits are quite minimalist, wringing emotion from a low strum, a distant chime, or a haunting bit of dissonance – other parts are more richly layered and even a bit jarring. Pulp cinematic aura, feedback textured psychedelia, haunting European pop, and traces of field recorded folk flavor the sound – they've dabbled in all of these elements before – but never with this particular feel. The sound of epiphany. How many acts in the pop realm create a whole new style with a classic album, and then pull off something nearly as great almost 15 years later, without ripping themselves off? Add Portishead to that small list. We'll call '08 early, this is the best pop album of the year. Titles include "Silence", "Hunter", "Nylon Smile", "The Rip", "We Carry On", "Deep Water", "Machine Gun", "Small", "Magic Doors", "Threads". CD

✨✧ Rolling StonesGoats Head Soup (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Virgin, 1973. Used Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sometimes-overlooked classic from the Rolling Stones – but that's maybe just because it's sometimes obscured in the shadow of Exile On Main Street, the record that immediately preceded it! And while it might be a stretch to some, we like to think of Goat's head as kind of a capper to that double-length set – as the Stones are still working out a fair bit of similar ideas, with an opening ear to some global currents, and with great help from some of their key collaborators too. The set's worth it alone for the classic gut-wrencher "Angie" – and other tracks include "Star Star", "Hide Your Love", "Winter", "Can You Hear The Music", "100 Years Ago", and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)". ✨✧ Cha Cha ShawInto Morning ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rough-edged batch of spiritual jazz tracks from trumpeter Charles "Cha Cha" Shaw (not to be confused with Charles "Bo Bo" Shaw) – recorded in an open-ended loft jazz mode with a really open, echoey feel! The album's a rare 70s jazz date on the Folkways label, and it's almost got the freer, open sound of an ESP session from a decade before – experimental jazz that's very much at the fringes, but also played with some of the spirituality of the post-Coltrane generation. Shaw's trumpet has a really earthy sort of feel – blown with a great sense of personality, and a sound that's almost heart-wrenching at times – especially on some of the more modal numbers. Other players include Brian Ross on tenor, Billy Lyes on piano and guitar, and Ronnie Boykins on bass. Boykins is really the only player we know here from other records – and titles include the nicely grooving "KZ", plus "Juggety", "Super Slik", and "Eternal". CD

✨✧ TwilightPains Of Love ... CD
Luv N' Haight, 1986. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The rare second album from Twilight – recorded five years after the first, and with a sound that's every bit as great! Twilight morphed a bit in the time since their debut – moving from a solo act into more of a duo, yet still very strongly under the guidance of mainman Lawrence Ross – a singer, musician, and self-produced artist with a great ear for pushing contemporary soul modes into some hip new directions! The overall feel of the set is more early 80s than you'd expect from the date – no too-tinny keyboards, and lots of warmth in the production – killer indie soul that really brings out the best aspects of Ross' original tunes, with lots of great keyboard work that falls more in a jazzy style than the usual soul modes of the time. There's plenty of groovers, but more in a funky soul style for the 80s than the more familiar boogie or dancefloor modes – and as before, there's some great ballads that show a good degree of depth in Twilight's sound. Titles include "Pains Of Love", "Love From You", "You're In Love", "I Wonder Who", "Dance With Me", "Find Someone Else", and "You Look So Good". CD

A crazy collection of singles from the pre-hippie years of the beatnik – that cool cat who loved jazz, read poetry, and dug the scene with plenty of attitude! That attitude is the main focus of most of the cuts here – obscure tracks from the late 50s and early 60s that poke fun at the heady thoughts and easy intellectualism of the beat scene – presented in a range of different styles that really run the gamut – from jazz, to rock, to many other genres in between – including a fair bit of offbeat spoken word and instrumental records too! The vibe here follows nicely in the other Lux & Ivy collections on the Righteous label – full of weird and wild records we never would have discovered otherwise – with cuts that include "Dog" by Bob Dorough, "Laffin Beatnik" by Johnny Beeman, "Reaching Into In" by Ken Nordine, "No Pictures Please" by Rod McKuen, "Manhattan Fable" by Babs Gonzales, "Pimples & Braces" by Spike Jones & The City Slickers, "Teenage Beatnik" by Louis Nye, "A Beatnik Story" by The Expressos, "Meet The Bongo Man" by Johnny O, and "William Butler Yeats On The Third Avenue El" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. A great bit of dancefloor funk from Chameleon – co-produced by Fred Wesley and Azar Lawrence, with a groove that's very much in keeping with the Horny Horns style of the late 70s! "Get Up" is a really infectious little number – one that snaps and basses around with the best sort of late 70s Funkadelic energy – and "We'll Be Dancin" is a bit more conventional, but still pretty nice. 12-inch, Vinyl record

There's a wonderful combination of horns going on here – the trumpet of Dave Douglas and tenor of Joe Lovano – sounding maybe even better on this album than on their previous efforts together! Both artists have this really cascading sense of sound in this setting – notes that seem to spill out effortlessly from their horns together, finding all the right spaces and spots next to each other – and shaded in with work from Lawrence Fields on piano, Linda May Han Oh on bass, and Joey Baron on drums – a group of equally free-thinking players who match and expand the unusual changes going on in the music. The David Byrne tracks are surprisingly great, too – especially the main theme – and the whole thing is a great mix of period-styled sounds and moments that echo some of the hippest currents of the 80s! Side one features all material from Sakamoto – including "First Coronation", "Open The Door", "Rain", and "The Last Emperor Theme" in different variations. Side two features more great tracks from David Byrne – including "Main Title Theme", "Bed", "Picking A Bride", and "Wind Rain & Water" – plus "Lunch" by Cong Su, "Red Guard" by The Red Guard Accordion Band, and "The Red Guard Dance" by The Girls Red Guard Dancers. Impulse/Universal (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most spiritual albums recorded by Pharoah Sanders for Impulse – an open-ended and free-thinking exploration of ideas, one that's very much in the late Coltrane mode! As you'd guess from the title, the set's a live one, which maybe helps open up the sound even more – making the set almost a bridge between the freer reaches of the 60s New York avant scene and some of the loft jazz expressions to come. The group's a largeish one – filled with spiritual jazz luminaries, in a lineup that includes Hannibal Marvin Peterson on trumpet, Harold Vick on tenor, Carlos Garnett on flute, Joe Bonner on piano and harmonium, and both Cecil McBee and Stanley Clarke on basses, and Norman Connors, Billy Hart, and Lawrence Killian on drums and percussion. The album features three long tunes, all great – and titles include "Healing Song", "Memories of John W Coltrane" and "Lumkili". CD
