✨✧ One WayWrap Your Body (with bonus track) ... CD
MCA/PTG (Netherlands), 1985. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Damn, One Way never lets us down – and although the group cut many albums back in the day, all of them have some great standout moments! The groove here seems even tighter than ever, but never slick or commercial – a very important distinction, given that so many of One Way's contemporaries really let things slide as they headed for the pop charts. Not so with Al Hudson and group, though – as they always know how to balance things out with all the best elements they had from the start – a good mix of upbeat groovers and some mellower steppers – the latter of which really make us love the record. Titles include the smooth stepper "More Than Friends, Less Than Lovers", which features lead vocals by Ewana Wilson, and some sweet harmonies by the Ridgeways that really make the track – and other titles include "Let's Talk", "Serving It", "Condemned", and "If I Knew". CD also features the bonus track "Let's Talk (extended version)". CD

Just a few short years after Saafir's debut as a solo act – and a set that marks a really strong maturation in his sound! There's a sense of layering in both the production and the vocals that packs a punch from the very first track, and which holds strong throughout – with studio work from JZ, Porch Monkeys, J Groove, and Shock G. Titles include "I'm Saafir (The Saucee Nomad)", "JZ Theme", "Stay Hi", "Goin Home", "Major Knock", "Broad Minded", "Sendin U Signals", and "Street Scene". AmericaHat Trick (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Warner (Japan), 1973. Used ... $24.99
Warm, mellow, and completely sublime – the mighty America at the height of their powers – working with a quality that nobody else can match! The trio wrap together all the best ideas that were bubbling under in the LA scene of the late 60s – vocal harmonies, studio perfection, and even touches of rootsy instrumentation – yet find a space to work all these elements together in a rich sound that's completely unique – amazingly understated at times, despite a near-perfect level of production! The whole album's great – even their original version of "Muskrat Love" – nestled in here next to "Rainbow Song", "Submarine Ladies", "Molten Love", "Green Monkey", and "Goodbye". CD

Archie Bell & The DrellsLet's Groove – The Archie Bell & The Drells Story ... CD
Big Break (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A great great group who never lost their groove – featured here on a set that's the first-ever label-spanning collection of their genius! The set begins with a huge amount of tracks from the Atlantic Records years of Archie Bell & The Drells – records that start with their raw Texas funk groove, then move into the group hitting a Philly soul mode – which they do wonderfully, and continue to expand their sound in a really great way! The second half focuses on their sublime 70s Philly gems for Gamble & Huff – tracks that showed up on the Philadelphia International family of labels, and which had Archie and the group sounding equally great on the modern club dancefloors! There's also some rare material that was recorded in between these stretches for the Glades label – and the 44 track, 2CD set is overflowing with rare gems, well-remembered favorites, and other well-chosen tracks. Titles include "Soul City Walk", "I Love My Baby", "My Balloon's Going Up", "You Never Know What's On A Woman's Mind", "Girls Grow Faster Than Boys", "Old People", "Strategy", "Show Me How To Dance", "Glad You Could Make It (12" disco)", "Go For What You Know", "Showdown", "Dog Eat Dog", "A Soldier's Prayer 1967", "Do The Choo Choo", "Girl You're Too Young", "Don't Let The Music Slip Away", "Wrap It Up", "Deal With Him", "Archie's In Love", "Ain't Nothing For A Man In Love", "I've Been Missing You", and "Nothing Comes Easy". Solomon BurkeMusic To Make Love By ... LP
Chess, 1975. Very Good ... $14.99
An incredible record – a real standout in Solomon Burke's career! This set features him working with arrangements that are smooth, mellow, and sexy – very much in the Barry White and Isaac Hayes mode, a style that's a perfect fit for Solomon's voice, which was warm and deep back when White and Hayes were just kids! Gene Page did some of the arrangements with Solomon, and the record's a wonderfully unified session with a mellow 70s soul feel that's just great. Titles include "Everlasting Love", "Music To Make Love By", "Midnight & You", "You & Your Baby Blues", and "Let Me Wrap My Arms Around You". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 70s pressing! White label promo. Cover has some light wear, a bit of splitting in one corner, and a sticker in that same corner.)

✨✧ Sharon Mhati Chatam (Gianfranco Reberberi)Fantasy (with bonus download) ... LP
Cinedelic (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99
With a cover like that, it's easy to see where the fantasy in the title is going – certainly not into the musky world of swords and sorcery, and instead into the realm of slinky sounds that are right at home in the Italian sound library world of the 70s! The music here has all the warm erotic touches of some of the better-known soundtrack material from the time – put together by Gianfranco Reverberi, who you might know from some of his crossover prog classics – but delivered with a lean instrumental mode that often has a keyboard as the lead instrument, over slow-stepping basslines and some nice washes of strings used in just the right way. Some tunes have a gentle funk vibe, others are sweetly sexy – and the set also features versions of some bigger hits from the time, with titles that include "Daniel", "Sylvia's Mother", "Fire Shadows In The Sunset", "Vincent", "She Was Not An Angel", "E Poi", "Quel Che Non Saprei Dirti Mai A Parole", and "Closed In A Drugstore". Al Di MeolaLand Of The Midnight Sun ... LP
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A real 70s standout from guitarist Al Di Meola – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of most of his albums from the decade! The record's one that broke Al's talents out to so many different groups – yet never in a way that waters down his sound, nor dims his genius for a solo. Al plays a host of guitars – electric, and both six and 12 string acoustic – the latter of which are especially beautiful, and handled in a balance between European virtuoso modes, and some of the more rhythmic elements of the American fusion scene. Speaking of fusion, the other players on the date really help set the tone – Chick Corea on keyboards and piano, Barry Miles on Fender Rhodes and mini-moog, Stanley Clarke on bass, and both Steve Gadd and Lenny White on drums – each setting a different pace when they appear. Titles include "The Wizard", "Suite Golden Dawn", "Short Tales Of The Black Forest", and "Land Of The Midnight Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

Roy EldridgeLittle Jazz ... CD
Inner City, 1950. Used ... $6.99
There's nothing little about the talents of Roy Eldridge on the trumpet – as you'll hear in this hip set of tracks from the start of the 50s – material recorded in Paris with help from some great American sidemen! Half the tracks feature Roy's trumpet in a quintet with Zoot Sims on tenor, Dick Hyman on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Ed Shaughnessy on drums – grooving in the relaxed, swing-based style that you'd expect from Eldridge's 50s work on Verve. Roy sings just a bit on the set – scatting alongside the lead vocals from Anita Love on a version of "It Don't Mean A Thing" – and singing a duet with Anita on the R&B-ish "There Ain't No Flies On Me". Other tracks include "King David", "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams", and "The Man I Love". Remaining tracks are also from Paris in June of 1950 – and feature Gerry Wiggins on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – on instrumental tunes that include "Wild Driver", "Easter Parade", "If I Had You", "Nuts", and "Goliath Bounce". ✨✧ JJ Johnson, Joe Simon, Millie JacksonCleopatra Jones – Original Soundtrack ... LP
Spring/Warner, 1973. Good ... Just Sold Out!
One of the best of the blacksploitation scores of the early 70s – a masterpiece of music that we rate every bit as high as Shaft or Superfly – maybe even higher! The music here is incredible – a surprising funky turn for JJ Johnson, who most folks know for his straighter jazz work – and like Marvin Gaye, Barry White, and others who were surprising the world with their ability to score music for a full film during the early 70s, JJ really knocks it out of the park with this one – coming up with a batch of tunes that are a wonderful mix of sophisticated scoring, creative instrumentation, and some damn funky grooves! The title cut features Joe Simon on vocals, and Millie Jackson sings on the cuts "Love Doctor" and "It Hurts So Good". The rest of the set is instrumental, and other cuts include an instrumental take on "Cleopatra Jones", plus "Go Chase Cleo", "Goin To The Chase", "Wrap Up", and "Airport Fight". Hans Koch & Paul LovensNephlokokkygia 1992 ... CD
Hat Art (Switzerland), 1992. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Fantastic reedwork from Hans Koch – a player captured here at the height of his powers, on a series of live improvisations with drummer Paul Lovens, recorded during a tour of Eastern Europe in the early 90s! Koch doesn't always get his due alongside some of the bigger names of the overseas scene – but his work here is fantastic on a range of reeds – tenor, soprano, clarinet, and bass clarinet – all used with the kind of quick-thinking tones and textures you might hear from a range of players that might include Evan Parker and Mats Gustafsson! Drummer Lovens is always great too, but really seems to wrap his work here around the lead inspiration of Koch – using drums, cymbals, gongs, and even a musical saw at all the right moments, in all the right ways – on long improvisations titled "In Sofia", "In Warna", "In Plovidiv", and "In Russe". Ember/Sundazed, 1975. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A strange little set from the 70s – one that has a cover that looks a fair bit like US trucker country of the time, but which comes across with a nicely different vibe! In truth, Mother Trucker are a UK group – all-girls, all-rocking, but with a cool compressed sort of approach that's got some of the best post-glam elements that were showing up on the British scene – very different than you might expect from the cover, although with all the slink and sweetness that you might guess too! Vocals often trade back and forth in a nicely catchy way – and tunes include "Shine It On", "Fancy Dan", "Goin Back", "Big Mama", "Billy John", "Explosion In My Soul", "Propeller Love", "When I'm Alone With You", and "Wrap It Up". Ace (UK), Late 60s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $16.99 22.99
A wide-ranging set, and one that really gets at the influence of the music of Lou Reed over the years – as the collection brings together songs penned by Reed from back in the day, but which continue to get new handling by a variety of artists in more recent decades! As some folks know, Lou first started out as a songwriter – knocking out tunes for no-name groups issued on budget labels – and although the music of the Velvet Underground and Reed's solo work could sometimes get way-out, at the core there were always all these really great songs – the kinds of tunes that are featured here, on interpretations from a really great array of different groups and singers! As with other titles in this series from Ace, the notes are great – lots of history and other details too – to accompany a set list of 20 titles that include "What Goes On" by Bryan Ferry, "Pale Blue Eyes" by Alejandro Escovedo, "Run Run Run" by Echo & The Bunnymen, "I'm Waiting For The Man" by Beck, "We Are The People" by Iggy Pop, "Rock & Roll" by Detroit, "Sunday Morning" by Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs, "I'll Be Your Mirror" by The Primitives, "New Age" by Rachel Sweet, "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams" by Nico, "Perfect Day" by Kirsty MacColl & Evan Dando, "Vicious" by Lloyd Cole, "Train Round The Bend" by The Soft Boys, "Femme Fatale" by Tracey Thorn, "I'm Set Free" by Yo La Tengo, "Walk On The Wild Side" by The Dynamics, and "All Tomorrow's Parties" by June Tabor & Oyster Band. The Mighty Flames never sound too metallic here – at least not in any way that's cold or harsh, or heavy metal too! Instead, these guys have a warm groove that's on the tighter side of African funk – that point when the sound was getting a stronger influence from American soul and club music – as you'll hear on the grooves in the set! The tunes are mostly upbeat, and wrap their basslines, guitar, and keyboards together tightly – but they also have a looser vibe overall, and some especially nice synth lines – which almost feel as if they were added to the music afterwards, creating this cool sort of outer space presence. Titles include "Search Out Watch Out", "Road Man", "Funk Child", "Lover Man's Bullet", "Music Is The Answer", and "Let's Work Together". CD

Heavenly heavenly vocal group soul! Although recorded in Memphis for the Stax subsidiary of We Produce, the sound of the record is much more in keeping with some of the best of the New Jersey group soul records from the time – fragile at times, with a sweetness that's quite different than the bolder sound of early 70s Stax! The vocals are very raw, but woven together perfectly – into a soaring sound that will reach up and rip your still-beating heart right out of your chest! Tracks include "Love's Maze", "Wrap Me In Love", "Trust In Me", "At Last", "You Make The Sunshine", and their great cover of "People Make The World Go Round", which is stone cold one of the best Stax tracks from the early 70s! ✨✧ This HeatDeceit ... LP
Rough Trade, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The last record from This Heat – and a set that's every bit as mindblowingly experimental as their first! The album saw a bit wider circulation than their previous efforts – as Rough Trade came into the mix, and gave the group access to a wider UK audience – but the label's approach is clearly very "hands off", as This Heat step effortlessly from vocal songs to blasting electronic passages, at a level that maybe beats any of the UK experimentalists in the Manchester or Sheffield scenes at the time! The core trio is still very much in place – with loads of phenomenal rhythms from Charles Hayward – but there's possibly an even more strongly stated role of the engineering and tape work that's helped layer the sound of the record – years ahead of its time, and maybe even more stunning in a pre-digital world. There's definitely more vocals than before, but never in any sort of attempt to come up with a crossover cut – and the album's still got a strongest focus on its instrumentation and effects. Titles include "Radio Prague", "Shrink Wrap", "SPQR", "Sleep", "Paper Hats", "New Kind Of Water", and "Makeshift Swahili". LP, Vinyl record album

An insanely big collection of work from the great Deniece Williams – eleven full albums, plus bonus tracks more – all to sum up a decade in which she was one of the strongest forces going in mainstream soul! Williams got her start as Deniece Chandler on the Chicago scene – where she had a vocal range that rivaled that of Minnie Riperton, which had her initially stepping out here in a mode that's a bit similar on the first album or two in the set – working with sophisticated soul production that really brings out the best in her sound! As things move on, she also showcases the way she can wrap that fantastic voice around a catchy groove and a playful hook – a quality that made Williams one of the surprising crossover soul stars as the 80s moved in, with a big run of hits that are all included here on albums that still represent a well-balanced blend of chart tracks and some deeper full length material. The set features the full albums Niecy, Songbird, When Love Comes Calling, My Melody, a second Niecy album, I'm So Proud, Let's Hear It For The Boy, Hot On The Trail, Water Under The Bridge, and Good As It Gets – plus an album of duets with Johnny Mathis, titled That's What Friends Are For. The last record we've ever seen by this funky vocal combo – and every bit as tasty as their early work for Fantasy Records! Part of the reason for that is because the group's getting production here from Augie Johnson – who picked up plenty of funky jazz touches through his work with Wayne Henderson, and had a long relationship with the group that clearly shows them in their best light. The vocals are great – harmonic and floating, without being hokey – and the tracks groove along with the same sort of gentle bounce you'd expect from late 70s Fantasy sides by the Boppers, Side Effect, and others. About Time, 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A crowning moment of achievement for trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah – a record that draws on his rich experience working with Sun Ra, but focuses the energy into a warmer, more spiritual jazz setting overall! The album's a lost treasure from the US scene of the late 70s – a perfect melding of jazz modes of the time, and one of those dates that somehow has all the players sounding even better than usual – really hitting a unique space together – one that's rhythmic, yet searching – free, yet structured – and always open to new ideas throughout! In addition to trumpet from Abdullah, the group also features vibes from Jay Hoggard, French horn from Vincent Chaney, cello from Muneer Abdul Fatah, bass from Jerome Hunter, and drums from Rashied Sinan. Hunter's bass is an especially moving force in the session – giving the album a warm, soulful current that really holds things together – and titles include "Song of Tenderness", "Eternal Spiraling Spirit", "Long Time Black", and "Life's Force". The first full album we've ever heard from Kon – and a really soulful set that follows strongly off his famous mixtapes and compilations with Amir! As on those gems, there's a very classic sound going on here – a strong love of the best moments of 70s soul, funk, and club – delivered with some surprisingly contemporary inflections at times – mostly in the way Kon uses studio elements to help wrap together his influences in a seamless, effortless groove! Rhythms step up strongly at all the right moments – sometimes club funk, sometimes a bit more soulful house – and the album features guest appearances from Amy Douglas, Georg Levin, Induce, and Ben Westbeech – plus some mixing help from Caserta. The overall mix of classic and contemporary is somewhere in the Joey Negro/Sunburst Band mode – and titles include "All Night", "She Was A Queen", "Awe Baby", "Don'tcha Wanna", "Blow Me A Kis", "On My Way", "Love Shine", and "You Don't Know". Jonny TrunkWrappers Delight ... Book
Fuel (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $25.99 32.95
Jonny Trunk's a man who's given us plenty of great music over the years – his fantastic productions on the Trunk Records label – but this time around, he's presenting us with something sweeter – hundreds of rare candy wrappers from the 20th Century, mixed with some soda cans and a few other sweet things too! There's over 500 images in the book, all full color – and the presentation is great – almost like an art book, as the wrappers aren't worn or dirty, but nearly pristine – and matched with notes and a bit of history. The book is overflowing with really cool images, including some unusual cards and inserts – and the focus here is probably most strong on the 60s and 70s, which is what we might expect from Jonny Trunk. Jarvis Cocker did the introduction, and the book is 237 pages, softcover, and full color throughout. Book

✨✧ VariousHidden Beach Presents Unwrapped Vol 1 ... LP
Hidden Beach, 2001. Very Good+ 2LP ... $11.99
We're not really sure how we feel about this project, as it's a bunch of modern jazz lite players doing versions of hip hop hits. What's even more ironic is that some of the tunes they're covering looped up bits of stuff by their peers, like Jeff Lorber. There's some players involved here who've cut some respectable enough records in the past, like Patrice Rushen and Paul Jackson, Jr., but they all tend to churn out "new" jazz for lite fm stations more than anything else these days, and have surrounded themsleves with players of that sort, like Everett Harp. Still, you can't question the grooves of tunes like "One More Chance", "The Light" and "Bonita Applebaum". If you've got a set coming up in a cafe or chilled spot, you might want this for your crates. Also includes "Forgot About Dre", "Ms Jackson", "You Got Me", and "I Get Around". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousHidden Beach Presents Unwrapped Vol 3 ... CD
Hidden Beach/Sony, 2004. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A batch of smooth, jazzy instrumental takes on hip hop hits – from Hidden Beach Records! If you scratch just a little bit below the surface of the Hidden Beach roster, digging a little bit deeper than Jill Scott, there's an ultra smooth, kinda Quiet Storm vibe of sophisticated soul with lots of warm jazzy touches. That instrumental vibe is brought into these instrumental takes on hip hop's biggest hits, which keep the bouncing, kinetic appeal of the originals but play the tunes out in a modern jazz style. Linear horn, synthesizer and bass arrangements abound, with some scatty vocals over the top. Smooth jazz with a bassy bounce! Tracks include "In Da Club", "I Know What You Want", "PIMP", "Tainted" (a nice little nod to a lesser known single by Slum Village), "Lose Yourself", "Doo Wop (That Thing)", a Biggie medley, at 2Pac medley and more! Nat AdderleyHummin' ... LP
Little David, 1976. Sealed ... $11.99
A really brilliant little record from Nat Adderley – one that shows him shaking off the groove gotten from brother Cannonball, and finding some great space all on his own! The setting here is tight and funky – at a level that's a bit more arranged than a small combo soul jazz session, but which still has plenty of sharp edges and bold notes! The groove's a bit like Kudu Records from the time, but less electric overall – and Nat's cornet is featured in a hip combo with John Stubblefield on reeds, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano and keyboards, and Buddy Williams on drums. There's plenty of great funky riffing in the set, but also some wonderfully laidback grooves that really sparkle with electric piano from Gumbs – and titles include a surprisingly wonderful version of "MASH", plus "Hummin", "Midnight Over Memphis", "The Traveler", "Listen To The Rain", and the Latin-tinged "Amor Sonador". Antonio Adolfo, Brazil & BrazucaDestiny ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2007. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
The return of a legend – and a tremendously groovy little record! Brazilian keyboardist/composer Antonio Adolfo's been making records for years – but easily his greatest albums were those cut at the end of the 60s with his Brazuka group – a cool combination of funky rhythms, electric keyboards, spacious production, and female vocals – all wrapped up with that glorious Blue Brazil sound of the EMI/Odeon label. Here, Adolfo recaptures that sound beautifully – returning to modes he hasn't touched in decades – and getting tremendous treatment from the Far Out label, who really help him hit that classic sound right. The record's an instantly timeless set that rivals all of Antonio's wonderful work from many years back – recorded with Adolfo on keyboards, live jazzy rhythms, a bit of strings, and twin harmony vocals from daughters Carol Saboya and Luisa Saboia – soaring out beautifully with a really groovy sound. The whole thing's wonderful – even better than you might expect – and titles include "Bola Da Vez", "Papo Furado", "Luizao", "Eu E Voce", "Tudo E Brasil", "Domingo Azul", "Tao Iguais", "SOS Amazonas", "Sonho Estelar", and "Dono Do Mundo". Roman AndrenJuanita ... LP
Ajabu/P-Vine (Japan), 2008. New Copy ... $34.99 About October 20, 2021
Loads of sweet keyboards here – handled by Roman Andren, who's at the head of a very soulful group! Andren plays Fender Rhodes, and a bit of acoustic piano too – amidst other instrumentation that includes vibes, guitar, and lots of percussion – served up with strong influences from older Brazilian rhythms, European jazz, and a touch of American soul – all wrapped up warmly with a really great sound for a contemporary record like this! In the notes, Andren claims to be going for the jazzy sound of the 60s and 70s – and he's definitely got that right, but also brings a bit of a contemporary vibe into play too – not with too many beats, but just in the way he manages to tune his grooves towards the 21st Century – not just copping older modes, but reinventing them with his own soulful spirit. Some tracks have vocals, and titles include "O Sapo", "Juanita", "Let's Live Forever Love", "Bumblebee", "You Never Told Me", "Vento Do Verao", "O Mundo E Seu", and "Til Another Day". Japanese CD also features the bonus track "Love Has A Name". LP, Vinyl record album

AtomicThere's A Hole In The Mountain ... LP
Jazzland (Norway), 2013. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe the most brilliant work so far from Atomic – and definite proof that this Swedish ensemble just keeps getting better and better with each new recording! Every player in the quintet is a star in his own right – Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor and baritone sax, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Havard Wilk on piano, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums – but what's really amazing is the way they come together as one for the record – wrapping their strong identities together, and forging out with this focused sound that has a lot more power than ever before! All the musicians know the open space of freedom, but have found a territory that can hold them all – where they can respectfully create this wonderful new sound together – in a mix of modern jazz and avant expression that seems to echo some of the best recent work from Chicago. Titles include "There's A Hole In The Mountain", "Civilon", "Wolf Cage", "Accidentals", "Labyrinths", and "Available Exits". LP, Vinyl record album

David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $9.99
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

Roy AyersLifeline ... LP
Polydor, 1977. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
One of Roy Ayers' best-remembered albums of the 70s – a sublime blend of mellow numbers and some of his more club-oriented grooves of the time – all wrapped together with a genius that we can only describe as Ayers-like! The album's a beautiful example of the balance that Roy was striking in his work at the time – because alongside some of the more upbeat, catchy numbers, there's other tracks that are a fair bit more laidback, and almost abstract at times – a wonderful extrapolation of that sensitive Ayers blend of jazz and soul, with key emphasis on the vibes and keyboards. Titles include the massive groover "Running Away" – which you'll recognize from a key sample history over the years – and club cuts "Cincinnati Growl", "Fruit", "Sanctified Feeling", and "Stranded In The Jungle" – plus the more laidback cuts "Gotta Find A Lover", "I Still Love You", "Lifeline", and "This Side Of Sunshine". Roy AyersRoy Ayers Ubiquity (with bonus track) ... CD
Polydor/Verve, 1971. New Copy ... $11.99 14.98
One of the greatest Roy Ayers albums of all time – and one of the rarest! The record is right in the same vein as Roy's groundbreaking He's Coming LP – a righteous mix of soul jazz, subtle funk, and some of the cosmic wisdom that Roy was spreading among the jazz funk underground – all wrapped up beautifully, but never in a way that's like commercial soul of the time. There's a few instrumental tracks on the album, plus some vocal ones that show that off-beat male/female style that Roy would use more famously in later tracks like "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" or his work with Ramp. Players include Harry Whitaker on electric piano, Edwin Birdsong on organ, Alphonse Mouzon on drums, Jumma Santos on congas – and titles include a version of Nat Adderley's "Hummin", done as "Hummin In The Sun", and very much in the Ramp vein. Also features instrumental cuts "The Fuzz", which has Roy's vibes toned way up, and the cool mellow "The Painted Desert", a really offbeat slow jazz number. The group also does a great job with Edwin Birdsong's "Pretty Brown Skin", picking up the song as a really anthemic groover that gives the record a nice kick! CD also includes the rare 45-only track "He Gives Us All His Love" – originally done for the movie Cold Turkey. CD

Warner, 1967. Sealed ... $36.99
A tremendous album from The Beau Brummels – one of the lesser-remembered groups from the late 60s Warner hipster heyday! At some level, the group's a folk-rock outfit – with the left-of-center feel of some of Fred Neil's best work for Capitol, and a similar blend of east coast honesty and west coast mind expansion. The format here is remarkably simple, but handled with some nice touches by producer Lenny Waronker, who really brings a lot more out of the band than on their earlier indie recordings. Titles include "Are You Happy", "The Wolf Of Velvet Fortune", "The Keeper Of Time", "Only Dreaming Now", "Magic Hollow", "Painter Of Women", and "Triangle". LP, Vinyl record album

Sweetly soaring disco from the legendary Celi Bee – easily one of our favorite disco divas of the late 70s! This album's got a slightly lighter feel than some of Celi's other work – a bit less drama at times, but still plenty of full-on clubby rhythms – thanks to arrangements from Hector Garrido, and some relatively full orchestrations overall. Blundetto works with production help from Blackjoy – in a mode that might have been born in hip hop studio techniques, but which here has much more of a French post-colonial vibe – wrapping together different global elements, soulful expressions, and jazzy flourishes with effortless ease – into a style that's completely his own overall. Booker T & The MGsUniversal Language ... LP
Elektra, 1977. Sealed ... $24.99
A sweet sweet set of electric 70s funk – recorded by Booker T during a brief, but well-needed reunion with the MGs! The sound here is quite different than Stax-era MGs – as Booker plays a range of keyboards, not just organ – and the grooves have these great jazz funk touches at the bottom – almost a CTI vibe at times, but packed with the tighter energy you'd expect from the group! Steve Cropper's guitar is great – super-fine, and razor-sharp – really helping cut a nice edge on the cuts – over bass from Donald Duck Dunn and drums from Willie Hall, who's the only new member of the group. In a way, the album feels like mid 70s efforts from Johnny Hammond or Jimmy Smith – sweetly soaring on a let-loose 70s vibe. A really great second set from Harriet Brown – one of those "recorded at home" soul records that may well set the tone for a generation to come! Brown's got this always-skittish, almost-nervous approach to his music – one that often echoes the lyrics of the tunes, and their openly personal sense of anxiety – this pent-up, wrapped-up mode that always feels like it's going to explode – and which maybe feels even more so because Brown put the whole project together himself, away from any companionship in the studio. Apart from two guest vocal appearances, the whole thing is Harriet's own – beautifully so – with titles that include "Retail Therapy", "Shower Up Saddle Up", "Window Shopping", "Holy Place", "Method", "Driver's Seat", and "Bag Away". 'Dark-edged Brazilian pop from China – but work that still has a nice sense of warmth overall! There's a balance here that takes some of the sharper guitars and rhythms of early 80s postpunk, and wraps them around some of the hipper MPB modes of the post-Tropicalia years – all fused together with the evocative vocals of China, which are often presented with a slight bit of processing. The mix of styles is hard to pin down accurately – especially as it changes somewhat from track to track – but there's a really unique, personal feel to the set – a vision as fresh as sounds coming from Lenine, Arnaldo Antunes, and other progressive Brazilian artists of a decade before. Sofrito/Heavenly Sweetness (France), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $16.99
Some of the hippest sounds we've ever heard from Guadeloupe – served up by Erick Cosaque – a singer, percussionist, and key figure in the gwo-ka genre – yet an artist who works in a special space that's all his own! The tunes here definitely have the heavy percussion of gwo-ka, but they also bring in plenty of elements of funk and soul – the latter from Erick's amazing vocal style, which has this really deep flow that's wrapped around a set of French and Creole lyrics, but which has amazing power even if you can't understand the language! There's lots of great elements on keyboards and electric bass, which further helps underscore the funkier part of the music – and the whole thing is the kind of wonderful blend we've always loved from the criss-crossing of cultures in Guadeloupe, but also in a mode that's head and shoulders above most of the rest. Maybe the greatest moment ever from Country Joe & The Fish – an insane blend of politics, psychedelia, rock roots, and more – all wrapped up in a nice of carnival-esque style that really lives up to the group's name! Many folks later copied the group – and others, like The Fugs, worked in somewhat similar territory – yet there's a really special sound to the group on this early set, a balance that brings more focus to otherwise trippy moments, more sense to their political agenda, and these sharp instrumental inflections that really send the whole thing home. Blues historian Samuel Charters produced, giving the record another influential quality – and titles include "The Fish Cheer & I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die-Rag", "Who Am I", "Pat's Song", "Magoo", "Jam", "Eastern Song", and "Colors For Susan". East Of UndergroundHell Below (East Of Underground/Soap/Black Seeds/Sound Trek) (3CD set) ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1971/1972. New Copy 3CD ... $12.99 24.98
Proof that the US Army had plenty going on during the 70s – as you'll hear from this killer set of military-produced grooves from East Of Underground! The set goes way past the previous East Of Underground reissue – to feature work by the groups Soap, Black Seeds, and Sound Trek – all wrapped up in a beautiful package that's as visually pleasing as the music is funky! The cuts here were all recorded by US Army servicemen during the height of the Vietnam war – as Army-issued albums designed to encourage recruitment (as if a few funky grooves could help offset the bad press the war was getting on TV!) But despite that odd origin, the music here is all pretty great – mostly covers of familiar tunes from the time, but recorded with a nicely gritty quality that's mighty nice – and which makes the overall feel of the records like digging into some lost small studio tapes – ala Numero! Now Again have done a great job of putting together the whole package, too – contributing a wealth of notes and photos, and really digging deep into the scene in which these unique records were created. Not only that, but the packaging also replicates the style of the original odd releases too! The set features a CD each of music by East Of Underground and Soap – plus another CD that brings together an unusual double LP by the groups Black Seeds and Sound Trek. Titles include "I Just Want To Celebrate", "Kool & The Gang", "Walking In The Rain", "Backstabbers", "I Love Everything About You", "Ain't No Sunshine", "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Hell Below", "Higher", "Popcorn/Santana", "Walk On By", "Java Girl", and "Get Together". Dave EdmundsRiff Raff/Hear You Rockin ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), 1984/1987. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A pair of Dave Edmunds Records – back to back on a single CD! Riff Raff is Dave Edmunds in the 80s – still very much in charge of that special voice that made him a standout rocker from the UK scene the decade before – but also doing plenty to change with the times! Dave's vocals and famous guitar twang are wrapped around the kind of catchy tunes he always did so well – and the production, handled with help from Jeff Lynne, has some electro touches and compression around the vocals – elements that work surprisingly well, as in Lynne's own musical shift during the decade! There's plenty of classic Edmunds moments throughout – and titles include "Busted Loose", "Breaking Out", "Far Away", "How Could I Be So Wrong", "Can't Get Enough", and "Something About You". I Hear You Rockin is a late 80s set from Dave Edmunds – but one that has him working live, at a level that's maybe more tied to some of his late 70s material than you'd expect! The group perform a fair bit of older hits, and Dave's vocals and twang-heavy guitar are very much in fine formation – giving the whole thing a Stiff Records sort of vibe, on titles that include "Girls Talk", "Here Comes The Weekend", "Queen Of Hearts", "I Knew The Bride", "I Hear You Knockin", and "Crawling From The Wreckage". ✨✧ Bill EvansBehind The Dikes – The 1969 Netherlands Recordings ... CD
Elemental, 1969. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99 29.99
Two different slices of work from Bill Evans – both recorded on separate visits to The Netherlands in 1969 – a crucial year of performance for the pianist! Both sets feature the amazing Eddie Gomez on bass, and Marty Morell on drums – and the first 2/3 of the package is studio material, but with a live audience present – very well-recorded, with a sense of subtlety that really gets at that new level of sensitivity that Bill was bringing to the piano – those softer, even more delicate shades that were a perfect balance with the richer tones from Gomez on bass. The last third features a live set from later in the year – with, if anything, an even more sensitive approach from Evans on the keys! The package wraps up with two more surprise tracks – tunes recorded with the Metropole Orkest, following the style of Evans' "with orchestra" sessions done recently on Verve. As with other Elemental packages, the presentation is wonderful – a nice cure for all the Bill Evans bootlegs that have littered the market for years – with great sound and a superb set of notes. Titles include "Emily", "Beautiful Love", "One For Helen", "Quiet Now", "Pavane", "You're Gonna Hear From Me", "Granadas", "Nardis", "Love Theme From Spartacus", "Waltz For Debby", "Very Early", and "Someday My Prince Will Come". Peven EverettPower Soul ... CD
Studio Confession, 2006. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Peven Everett in all his glory – stepping forth in one of his best-produced albums in years! As with most of Peven's records, all music and vocals are from the man himself – a one-man show, but with a lot more going on than most full groups! Peven is really at the top of his game here – gliding over the top of the tunes with a sense of soul and spirit that's really tremendous – warm vocals, sweet keys, and snapping rhythms – but all wrapped up with a depth that none of his contemporaries can match! The record's key proof that Peven can easily be THE biggest soul star of the decade when he gets things focused – and the record's awash with instant classics that include "All My Life", "Can't Do Without", "Surely Shorty", "Stuck", "Just A Girl", "Sexy Make Up", and "Washing". Hugo FattorusoHugo Fattoruso & Barrio Opa ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
The first work we've heard in many years from keyboardist Hugo Fattoruso – an artist who was born in Uruguay, but whose talents have been intertwined with Brazilian music for many years – including early recordings in a bossa mode, and 70s fusion with his legendary Opa combo! This set follows the style of those great 70s albums – with a fusion style that owes plenty to the jazz changes in Brazil, particularly the way that jamming instrumental solos could often be wrapped up strongly with the rhythms – and the great balance between acoustic and electric elements in the music! Hugo plays keyboards throughout, and even vocalizes at times – in a cool wordless style that again reminds us of some Brazilian 70s artists – and the setting here is wonderfully sharp throughout – very much a fusion mode that really pushes the boundaries, but never loses its groove. Titles include "Antes/Goldenwings", "La Del Cheche", "Llamada Insolita", "Candombe Alto", "El Romance Del Sordo", "Botijas", "Trenes De Tokyo", and "Candombe Beat Funk". CD

Maynard FergusonLive From San Francisco ... LP
PAJ, 1984. Sealed ... $7.99
Maynard Ferguson live – and still holding onto all the great sort of grooves he cooked up in the studio during the 70s! The performance is from a 1984 appearance at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall – and Maynard's got the group in super-tight, super-soulful formation – with a very strong focus on the rhythms at the bottom, but plenty of room for spirited solos over the top – including work by Ferguson on trumpet, Tim Reis on soprano and alto, Steve Wiest on trombone, and Gregg Bissonette on drums. Titles include "Coconut Champagne", "Fireshaker", "Ganesha", "Bebop Buffet", and "South 21st Shuffle". LP, Vinyl record album

Xaver Fischer TrioSongs For You ... CD
Unique (Germany), 2002. Used ... $2.99
A fantastic bit of keyboard grooving – the third and best album by the Xaver Fischer Trio! The format is very simple – just classic-sounding electric keys, played in tandem with bass and drums, plus some occasional extra touches. The approach is great – kind of like a Ramsey Lewis record recorded for MPS – with sweeping keys over lightly dancing rhythms and modal grooves, all wrapped up with excellent production, and a totally solid sound that means that this one won't be off our decks for a long long time! Two cuts have guest vocals by Amy Antin – and tracks include "King Mark", "I Sing This Song Just For You", "Capricho", "Napoleon", "Disko", "Dinosaur", and "Billy's Jeans". CD

FloatersFloat Into The Future ... LP
MCA, 1979. Sealed ... $9.99
Smooth stepping grooves from The Floaters – still very much in the nicely compressed mode of their more famous debut, and getting some nice production help here from Eugene McDaniels! There's a righteous punch to the record that really shows the influence of McDaniels – a way of keeping things hip, even when hovering near the mainstream – and although the groovers are great, we actually think that the best cuts are the mellow ones – tunes that move in a lightly gliding, almost spacey way – one that has the group's voices crackling nicely with an honest approach that we really love! There's a warmth to these tunes that's undeniable – and titles include "Levitation", "Woman Love/You Are My Lady", "Brand New Lite", "Made Up My Mind", "The Best Of Our Love", "Go Down To The Disco", and "Sweet Lady September". ✨✧ Gilberto GilGilberto Gil (1968) (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Philips/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
A bold leap forward from Gilberto Gil – his first album recorded during the Tropicalia years, and an amazing collaboration with arranger Rogerio Duprat! The album's got a sound that really bridges scenes in Brazil – elements of older folkloric musics, folded with samba rhythms, folded again with psychedelic touches from Os Mutantes – who also help out on the set – all wrapped together with a sound so revolutionary, it still crackles with energy all these many years later! The sound and style are impossible to describe accurately, which is part of the charm of the record – and it's key placement as one of the prime musical texts of the Tropicalia years. Titles include "Marginalia II", "Luzia Luluza", "Pega A Voga, Cabeludo", "Frevo Rasgado", "Domingou", and "Domingo No Parque". CD also features 4 bonus tracks – "Barca Grande", "A Coisa Mais Linda Que Existe", "Questao De Ordem", and "A Luta Contra A Lata Ou A Falencia Do Cafe". CD

Verve, 1959. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
Ahhh . . . Diz in the 50s. What a great thing! He's post bop, post cubop, but still has all the best elements of those eras – wrapped up into a more complicated Latin-tinged style that's filled with warmth, humor, and some pretty compelling grooves. This set is one of Diz's best from the time – and it's got some tracks that are real classics in his book, like "Swing Low, Sweet Cadillac", "Ungawa", "Lorraine", and "Constantinople". The group's small and hip – with Junior Mance on piano, Les Spann on flute and guitar, Sam Jones on bass, Lex Humphries on drums, and Chano Pozo on conga. LP, Vinyl record album

Allen GinsbergAllen Ginsberg Reads Howl & Other Poems (70s pressing) ... LP
Fantasy, 1959. Sealed ... $24.99
Maybe one of the coolest albums of poetry ever recorded – a set that features a young, pre-hippie Allen Ginsberg – delivering his epic poem Howel, plus some other key works too. The young Ginsberg's voice is great – and really fills the works with a lot of bitterness and cynicism – with maybe more of a beat-era presentation than you'd know from his other later records, especially the music ones. This is one of the few albums that San Francisco-based Fantasy records cut of famous beat poets reading their own work – and it's probably one of the most enduring! Ginsberg reads "Howl", "Footnote To Howl", "Sunflower Sutra", "Supermarket In California", and other poems from the late 50s – and there's no musical accompaniment at all. LP, Vinyl record album

Sweet keyboard grooves from Herbie Hancock – and a set that has him taking up some of the territory of younger players he'd inspired – like Bobby Lyle, Webster Lewis, or Rodney Franklin! There's a fair bit of soul in the mix here, including some great work on vocoder – blended in with Hancock's work on jazzy keyboards – all wrapped up in a cosmic level that really fits the image on the cover, and which acts as a preface for some of the electro work to come in the early 80s! The blend is great – with that sublime balance that Hancock did better than anyone else – and titles include "Trust Me", "You Bet Your Love", "Tell Everybody", "Honey From The Jar", and "Knee Deep". John HandyCarnival ... LP
Impulse, 1977. Sealed ... $3.99
A well-blown set from alto saxophonist John Handy – recorded with larger arrangements at a time when Impulse Records was trying to match the sounds of CTI, but done in a way that still holds onto all the sharp soul of Handy's earlier years! The format's nice and full – with lots of keyboards from Sonny Burke, George Spencer, and even Lee Ritenour – but Handy's crisp alto lines cut through the record wonderfully, bringing in these soulful tones that remind us a lot of Gary Bartz in a similar setting – always filled with spirit, and searching out with a nice sense of personality. Titles include the groover "Watch Your Money Go" – plus "All The Things You Are", "Carnival", "Alvina", and "Love's Rejoicing". LP, Vinyl record album

Smoke Sessions, 2015. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
Wonderfully fluid work from the great Eddie Henderson – a record that's wrapped up in that beautiful glow and searching, soulful energy that only seems to get better and better over the years! The record's got some great partners on board – including George Cables on piano and some especially great Fender Rhodes – the latter of which really reopens the glow in Henderson's music from years past, but with a much different vibe than the 70s. Gary Bartz also plays alto on most of the record – sounding wonderful as he opens up and soars – and the rest of the group features Doug Weiss on bass and Carl Allen on drums – both players who can be tight, but loose in all the right ways. Henderson's trumpet and flugelhorn lead with a veteran's wisdom, but youthful energy – and the pieces include takes on his own classic "Sunburst" and "Dreams", Cables's "Morning Song" and "Beyond Forever", plus "You Know I Care", "First Light", "Together", "Ginger Bread Boy", "Spring" and "Zoltan" – the last of which is taken in the best vintage Woody Shaw spirit! Mosaic, Mid 60s. New Copy 5CDs ... About August 15, 2021
❔
The start of a legend – a huge amount of material that introduced the world to the tenor genius of the young Joe Henderson – recorded over the space of a few short years, on records that feature Joe as both the leader and a sideman on some of the hippest Blue Note records of the time! Henderson was amazing right at the start – able to play a soulful hardbop lead at one moment, then slide into edgier modern territory the next – a quality that made him a key artist to work with some of the other strong Blue Note innovators of the period – as you'll hear in this overstuffed set! The set features a total of 47 gems – including some alternate takes – all wrapped up with the usual top-shelf Mosaic Records booklet of notes, photos, and other key details on the material. Includes the full albums Page One, Our Thing, In N Out, Mode For Joe, and Inner Urge – all recorded under the leadership of Joe Henderson – plus tracks from the albums Unity by Larry Young, The Kicker by Bobby Hutcherson, Little Johnny C by Johnny Coles, and Step Lightly by Blue Mitchell – and the full Kenny Dorham albums Una Mas and Trompeta Toccatta, both of which are essential in Henderson's career!
