✨✧ Michael Cosmic/Phill Musra Group/World's Experience OrchestraPeace In The World/Creator Spaces/The Prayer (3CD set) ... CD
Cosmic/Now Again, 1974. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
An amazing package – a pair of rare avant jazz albums, presented here together! The first album is Peace In The World – maybe the only album issued under the name of Michael Cosmic – but a set that's part of a key legacy with his brother, reedman Phill Musra! The set has Cosmic in very heady territory – sounds that come from his young tenure in the AACM, his brief time with Cecil Taylor, and his budding reputation on the 70s Boston scene – where the set was recorded, and almost stands as a precursor to the rich legacy of improvisational jazz that would emerge on the New England scene for decades to come! Tracks are long and very free, but have spiritual currents too – and Cosmic is mostly on piano, with Musra on soprano sax and tenor, Leonard Brown on soprano and tenor, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Huseyin Ertunc on drums, and Eric Jackson on percussion. Titles include "We Love You Malcolm X", "Peace In The World", "Sapce On Space", and "Arabia". Next is the related album Creator Spaces, by Phill Musra – recorded at the time when he was part of the very underground Boston avant scene – a world that had a slightly different vibe than music coming from Chicago, Detroit, or New York! The album's got a spiritual avant bent – soulful at the core, with lots of references to outer space as well – and an approach that feels a lot like a classic Saturn Records session by Sun Ra, both in sound and spirit! Musra plays reeds, chimes, and percussion – and the group features some incredible sax work by Michael Cosmic, who also plays a bit of organ, again in a tripped-out, Ra-type way. Huseyin Ertunc plays percussion – very free and loose, in ways that are a great balance to the more angular lines of the reeds – and tracks include "The Creator Is So Far Out", "The Creator Spaces", "Egypt", and "Arabia". Also features unreleased tracks "The Creator Is So Far Out (unreleased version)" and "Phyllis". Added to the set is a really special bonus third CD – an unreleased long live performance of "The Prayer" by Worlds Experience Orchestra – a group from the same scene at the time – with Shaddu Jones on piano, Stan Strickland on tenor and soprano, Frank Peterson on alto, John Jamyll Jones on bass, Robert Ruff on cello, Larry Lerner on drums, and John Klein on amplified violin. New World GenerationNew World Generation ... CD
Now Again, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $7.99 17.98
Genius work from a little-known group – but a great one too! New World Generation were an early 80s combo from the Boston scene – but they've got a groove that's very much in keeping with some of the most righteous funk acts of the late 70s – particularly those that brought a nice degree of spiritualism to their music, like James Mason or RAMP! This sweet little set carries some great echoes of that generation – a warmer, jazzier style that most other early 80s soul music you'd hear from elsewhere – and a richly-conceived vision that has New World Generation sounding way different than your usual funk, club, or boogie act of the time. Plus, the package is really fleshed out with additional sounds from related groups Universal Rhythms and Orision – tracks that, like the New World Generation numbers, weren't really issued at the time – but which represent a very hip side to underground soul in the US – one that's often eclipsed by bigger acts going for easy chart fame. Now Again have really outdone themselves with the package – bringing together rare tracks from almost-gone tape sources, and putting together a set of notes that really helps illuminate this amazing batch of music! Titles include "Sunshine", "Curious Soul", "Dreamland", "One Of A Kind", "I'm Feelin' Fine", "Mystical Planet", "New World Generation", "Worry", "Free Your Mind", "How Do You Feel", "Listen From Your Soul", "Loving You", and "Someday The World Will Be As One". World Of OzWorld Of Oz ... CD
Deram/Universal (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99 About April 28, 2021
Beautifully baroque work from The World Of Oz – a group who share some of the dreamy vocal stylings of the Bee Gees at the time, but who also work here in a fuller sound that benefits from some groovy arrangements from John Cameron and Mike Vickers! The tunes on the set have a lovely sing-song kind of quality – taking a childlike approach to the subject matter, then tripping them out a lot – almost in an early Status Quo sort of mode, but again with more poise and grooviness. And thanks to the Brit Easy backings on the best tracks, there's even some slightly funky touches that groove the album more than you'd expect from the title and cover – making it even more of a treasure to our ears! Titles include "Bring The Ring", "Beside The Fire", "The Hum Gum Man", "With A Little Help", "Willow's Harp", "Like A Tear", and "We've All Seen The Queen". CD
This title is scheduled for release about Wednesday, April 28.

World's Experience OrchestraBeginning Of A New Birth/As Time Flows On ... CD
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $18.99 20.98
A lost legacy in spiritual jazz – two albums recorded by a Boston group who worked far from the limelight in New York – in a very underground scene where they recorded these two very special albums in the 70s! Their sound is very collaborative and freewheeling – an approach that reminds us a lot of music by Phil Cohran and The Artistic Heritage Ensemble. The first album in the set is The Beginning Of A New Birth – a record that really lives up to its title, given the joyous energy it brings into being – a very collaborative vibe that has the entire ensemble working together on two side-long tracks – mixing rootsy percussion, avant solos, and unified voices that really give the music a special touch! The mix of ensemble vocals and reed elements is a bit like some of the Max Roach or Billy Harper projects of the time – but the approach is looser, less structured, and very organic. Players include Michael Cosmic on alto, Raquib Ishma'll Hassan on tenor, Phil Musra on soprano sax, Shaddu Jones on piano, and Robert Fuff on bass – and titles include "The Beginning Of A New Birth" and "The Prayer". As Time Flows on is the second record – and has a style that's maybe slightly more compact – still every bit as spiritual as before, but with some shorter tracks that bring the group's ideas into even deeper focus! The group is smaller, but still uses voice along with their instrumentation – which comes from the work of Earl Grant Lawrence on flute, Jamyll Jones on bass, Shaddu Jones on piano, and Larry Roland, Roy Hall, and Chauncy Hutcherson on percussion. Some vocals are more solo, and even hit a bit of a hip protest vibe – and titles include "Nine Degrees & Cold", "Black Woman", "To Do Nothing", "The Mind", and "Rain". Comes with a great booklet – which tells the group's unique story! CD

Black Saint (Italy), Early 80s. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
Genius work from the World Sax Quartet – a really unique ensemble who not only set the tone for a generation of jazz musicians to come, but also gave focus to some richly expressive talents from the 70s underground! The quartet is something of a supergroup right from the start – graced with tremendous reed work by David Murray, Julius Hemphill, Oliver Lake, and Hamiet Bluiett – all key American players who really helped transform the sound of jazz in the 70s – coming together here in a whole new way on seminal sides for the Black Saint/Soul Note label! The format – which inspired many others – is really compelling – as the group's sounds come only from saxes, no other instrumentation at all – with the four wind players handling all rhythm and melody, and making some really amazing music in the process. Horn interplay had never been heard so clearly before – especially as here, the stars put aside their egos, and never try to overblow each other – and instead have this brilliant way of working together to craft a new sort of groove. The box set features the albums Steppin With, WSQ, Revue, Live In Zurich, and Live At The Brooklyn Academy Of Music – all with the classic lineup – plus Moving Right Along, which actually features a quintet with Bluiett, Murray, and Lake – joined by James Spaulding and Eric Person. Philips (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99 About April 28, 2021
A brilliant criss-crossing of pop modes in late 60s Europe – and the first album from Greek rock supergroup Aphrodite's Child! Although later work by the trio was a fair bit more heady, the approach here is more focused psychedelic pop – done in styles that echo strongly with some of the late 60s styles coming out of the Parisian scene, which is where the group were working at the time. Lyrics, though, are sung mostly in English – which gives the record a bit of a Brit psychedelic feel – but there's some other elements here that are also strongly the group's own. A young Demi Roussos sings lead vocals and plays guitar, and new age maestro Vangelis plays organ and percussion with a sound that's quite different than any of his later work! Titles include "End Of The World", "Day Of The Fool", "Valley Of Sadness", "Rain & Tears", "Mister Thomas", "You Always Stand In My Way", and "The Shepherd & The Moon". CD

You can hear Paul C's influence in the edits, the tightness of the beats and the layering and chopping of the samples, which definitely pushes this set to higher level. One of Alice Coltrane's most ambitious albums of the early years – recorded with a full set of heavenly orchestrations! The core group features Alice on piano, organ, and harp – alongside Frank Lowe on saxes, Reggie Workman on bass, Leroy Jenkins on violin, and Ben Riley on drums. Added to this combo is a much larger set of strings – swirling around in a rich musical backdrop that gives Alice's work a sense of majesty and power we could have never imagined. This is the album that really showed the world that she was far far more than just the wife of the late great one – a true mystical visionary with a sound that demanded to be heard! Side 2 features a recitation by Alice's spiritual mentor, Swami Satchdiananda – and the album features a wonderful version of "My Favorite Things", done with both organ and harp, plus the tracks "Love Supreme", "Galaxy In Turiya", and "Galaxy In Satchidandana". Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". LP, Vinyl record album

John ColtraneBlue World (Le Chat Dans Le Sac) ... CD
Impulse, 1964. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A lost treasure from the legendary John Coltrane Quartet – material recorded as the soundtrack for the Canadian film Le Chat Danse Le Sac – which features new recordings of material that Coltrane had done in previous years, but really updated by the fresh version of this group! Although the music was used in the film, which was an art house hit at best, it's never been issued on record before – and in fact, its existence was something of a mystery until not that long ago – quite a surprise, given that the sessions were done at Rudy Van Gelder's studio, and have a quality level that really matches the Impulse Records best by these musicians! The tunes are almost like this amazing bridge between the mid 60s Impulse years and the Coltrane sound at the start of the decade on Atlantic – as the grooves are modal, and most music is more inside than the group was hitting by 1965 – yet still burning with that searching spirit that made them so great. The lineup, of course, features John Coltrane on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – and the whole thing is an instant key addition to the catalog of this tremendous quartet. Titles include two takes on "Naima", three takes on "Village Blues", and the tracks "Like Sonny", "Traneing In", and "Blue World". CD

George DuningWorld Of Suzie Wong ... LP
RCA, 1960. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A strange film, but a great soundtrack! George Duning came up with an excellent batch of jazzy tracks for the film – and most of them swing hard and tightly, with strong jazzy solos, in a manner that's similar to some of Mancini's best scores of the late 50s. A number of tracks have odd "Eastern" touches in the melody – mostly through the use of percussion – and this makes the jazzy tracks even nicer, and gives them a strange feel that's similar to some of the "east meets jazz" albums on Verve during the 60s. Titles include "Aberdeen Caper", "Gwenny Lee", "At The Namcock", "Groove For Suzie", and "Hit The Road To Dreamland". Towards the end of the soundtrack, some cuts have a more orchestral feel, and this is in keeping with the change of mood in the film. LP, Vinyl record album

Earth Wind & FireThat's The Way Of The World (expanded edition) ... CD
CBS, 1975. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid 70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Titles include "Shining Star", "That's The Way Of The World", "Reasons", "Africano", "See The Light", and "Happy Feelin". CD also features 5 bonus tracks – "Shining Star (future star)", "All About Love (first impressions)", "Happy Feelin (anatomy of a groove)", "Caribou Chaser (jazzy jam)", and "That's The Way Of The World (Latin expedition)". Two great tracks from Dee Edwards – from a time when the Detroit singer was really getting a chance to shine! "Put The World On Hold" has a sweet lyric over a soaring groove – not entirely clubby, maybe more modern soul overall – with a slightly complex set of changes that really make the tune stand out! "Put Your Love On The Line" has a really cool funky vibe – upbeat club, but with an intensity to the instrumentation, which really seems to bring out the best in Dee's vocals! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ EmotionsDon't Ask My Neighbors – The Columbia/Arc Recordings (Flowers/Rejoice/Sunbeam/Come Into Our World/New Affair/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99 30.99
Amazing box set – five full albums of material, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Flowers – a soaring classic from The Emotions – thanks to some supreme help from the Earth Wind & Fire side of the soul spectrum! This set has the trio really sounding great – with Kalimba Productions by Maurice White and Charles Stepney – and a good deal of EWF help on the instrumentation as well! The girls break out of the rootsier style used on their earlier Stax recordings, and manage to fit perfectly with the jazzy tinges of the new grooves – and, along with Ramsey Lewis and EWF, the Emotions were part of a hugely successful trinity during the late 70s – one that took the indie soul roots of the Chicago scene and turned it into landmark big business for Columbia Records. The album's got a new approach to female group soul that would go onto shape R&B for years to come – and titles include "Flowers", "I Don't Wanna Lose Your Love", "We Go Through Changes", "Special Part", and "You've Got The Right To Know". Next is Rejoice – a huge hit for both The Emotions and Maurice White – whose Kalimba Productions handled this album in the same hit mode they'd been using for Earth Wind & Fire! There's a polished, soaring bounce her that definitely shows the Earth Wind & Fire touch – and which takes the girls miles from their rougher, rootsier soul of the Stax/Volt years – yet like all the best EWF records of the time, the sound is also plenty soulful, with lots of righteous undercurrents. The album includes the group's wonderful track "Don't Ask My Neighbors", a heavenly tune that builds on a long tradition of sweet female soul from Chicago; the super-huge "Best Of My Love", a hit on dancefloors and radios for years to come – and many other nice numbers like "Blessed", "How'd I Know That Love Would Slip Away", and "Key To My Heart". Sunbeam is great little album from The Emotions – largely because it sounds a lot like prime mid 70s Earth Wind & Fire, with female vocals added over the top – ultimately, pulling away with a soulful charm all its own! Maurice White produced the whole set, and it's got a soaring spacey sound that provides a perfect spiritual edge to the girls vocals – taking them way past the hits, into much more sophisticated soul territory. There's a beautifully righteous vibe going on throughout – a sound that's almost like Minnie Riperton at her 70s Capitol best – and titles include "Love Vibes", "Walking The Line", "Time Is Passing By", "I Wouldn't Lie", "Smile", and "Spirit Of Summer". Come Into Our World has the sweet Emotions at the top of their game – one of the brilliant albums that has the soulful trio working hand in hand with Earth Wind & Fire! The girls were plenty great in their early years, but working with Maurice White and company, they really took off – hitting a whole new level that really unlocked some deeply spiritual power in their vocals! And sure, the approach also yielded the group plenty of hits – but for good reason, too – given the classic quality and all-great nature of a set like this. Maurice White produced, and the lineup is filled with plenty of Earth Wind & Fire players too – working with some great arrangements from Tom Tom 84, Wade Marcus, and others. Tunes are balanced between clubby numbers and some nice midtempo moments – and titles include "Where Is Your Love", "Cause I Love You", "Come Into My World", "On & On", "I Should Be Dancing", "Layed Back", and "Yes I Am". New Affair has The Emotions breaking free a bit from the Earth Wind & Fire influence, and grooving nicely with a sweet 80s feel! The girls' voices are still quite wonderful – some of the deepest harmonies in the female soul world at the time – and the tunes kick it up nicely in a blend of snapping bassy club tracks and mellower cuts that sweetly sway with their great vocals! Loads of wonderful tracks – and an album not to miss! Titles include "Turn It Out", "There'll Never Be Another Moment", "Now That I Know", "Love Lies", "When You Gonna Wake Up", and "Here You Come Again". 3CD set features 8 bonus tracks – including "Boogie Wonderland (12" mix", "Don't Ask My Neighbors (single version)", "I Should Be Dancin (single version)", "My Baby Dance", "Changes", "Where Is Your Love (single version)", and "Flowers (single version)". An amazing session of spiritual soul jazz – and one of the rarest albums on Strata East! Shamek Farrah's soulful alto is matched with the free spiritual piano of Sonelius Smith, for a totally memorable session that virtually defines the essence of the Strata East sound! The music is free, but not too free; lyrical, but never indulgent; and always turning over with a fresh sense of imagination, and a soaring groove that's very much in the classic Strata East mode! The album also features Joseph Gardner on trumpet, Kiyoto Fuiwara on bass, Freddie Wren on drums, and Tony Waters on percussion – plus Milton Suggs, who performs a short bass solo entitled "Milt". Other longer tracks include "The World Of The Children", "Conversation Piece", and "People Puttin' People Through Changes". LP, Vinyl record album

Lee Fields & The ExpressionsMy World ... CD
Truth & Soul, 2009. Used ... $9.99
One of the best new soul records we've heard in years – a tremendous accomplishment for the mighty Lee Fields, and a set that's quite different than any of his other work! We've always loved Lee's funk and deep soul sides, but this album's something new altogether – almost done in the hard-edge, downtempo mode of the east coast harmony scene of the late 60s and early 70s – like some of the best group soul work coming out of New Jersey or Philly, with some super-dope production and instrumentation that's really amazing! The grooves follow strongly in the same laidback style as recent El Michels work – no surprise, given the El Michels connection to the music – with beats that are hard, but slow – and instrumentation that's funky, but in a mellow sort of way. Lee's vocals are as deep as ever – very much trained in the James Brown tradition, but turned here towards a really unique groove that makes us completely reevaluate his talents – an amazing achievement not just for Fields, but also for the whole Truth & Soul/El Michels crew! An instant classic – with tracks that include "My World", "Ladies", "Expressions Theme", "Honey Dove", "Money I$ King", "Love Comes & Goes", "Do You Love Me", and "Last Ride". CD

A really wonderful record – and one that maybe brings together a few key strands of the Folkways Records magic – as the album features narration by Langston Hughes, based on his First Book Of Rhythms book – layered with sound effects, folk songs, and music from around the world – all put together in this wonderful sonic pastiche! Much as we love Langston's writings, we especially love his voice – and the record is almost like some global folk take on the area that Hughes explored in a jazz vein with Charles Mingus around the same point in his career. The set is one continuous very cool record – narrated by Langston Hughes, but featuring global music as well! There are songs at points, but the whole thing is really one continuous soundpiece, in the best Folkways tradition. CD

Vocalion (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $34.99
Maybe the best book we've ever seen on the secret world of sound library music – those non-commercial recordings that are made away from the public, then lent out for later use in radio, film, and TV! Over the years, crate-diggers have brought a new sort of appreciation to sound library albums – and two of the best labels of the genre are the important KPM and Bruton labels in the UK – both home to fantastic sounds from artists who include Keith Mansfield, Syd Dale, David Lindup, Johnny Pearson, and many others! Records by these artists have achieved great fame in recent years – but because these guys weren't rock stars, or jazz musicians, their stories – and the stories of their studios and labels – have really been overlooked. Writer Oliver Lomax – who's also reissued many sound library gems via the Vocalion label – really does a great job of looking at KPM and Bruton – with a huge amount of historical detail, countless interviews with key figures, and even helpful details on the larger recording scene in the UK. The book features two sections of images – one color, one black and white – but it's very different than sound library album cover books, as the main focus here is on text, which spans 465 pages in great detail. Tim MaiaWorld Psychedelic Classics 4 – Nobody Can Live Forever – The Existential Soul Of Tim Maia ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever". A fantastic collection of grooves from Mass Production – one of the best of the large funk ensembles to hit the mainstream at the end of the 70s – even though they didn't always get the success they deserved! That doesn't stop these guys from giving their all, though – super-sharp, super-tight instrumentation that comes down on the groove right from the get-go – and which moves with a fast funk energy that's a nice contrast to some of the stiffer, clunkier modes that were floating around at the time! These guys inherit the best impulses of Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang – and find a way to make their large lineup sound nice and lean, never too overcooked – with shifting vocals that really help keep things interesting throughout. The 3CD package features 45 tracks from their seven year stretch recording for Atlantic/Cotillion Records – and titles include "Sky High", "Groove Me", "Our Thought", "Bopp", "Turn Up The Music", "Diamond Chips", "Inner City", "Sun Dancer", "Victory 83", "Magic", "I Like To Dance", "Welcome To Our World", "Slow Bump", "Time Bomb", "Keep My Heart Together", "Cosmic Lust", "I Believe In Music", "Fun In The Sun", "Just Wanna Make A Dream Come True", "Firecracker", and "Eknuf (inst)". The album features some guest guitar from Marc Ribot – nice and nasty, in a way that brings a real edge to the tunes – but as usual, it's the blend of keyboards, bass, and drums that push the real charm of the set! Chump Change, Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99
A host of amazing productions from the legendary Joe Meek – the UK studio genius who made some really incredible music in the 60s! Joe had a sense of echo, space, and electronics that was unrivalled by anyone else working in London at the time – and his music here easily rivals the best offbeat sounds coming from the American west coast, particularly the LA and Pacific Northwest scenes! There's lots of great guitar moments and sharp garagey edges – and lots of those weird, unusual instrumental moments that made Meek's music sound moogy years before the moog was invented. But there's also some wonderfully dramatic pop vocals too, which bring this sense of life to these tunes that never gets old. Titles include "Valley Of The Saroos" by The Blue Men, "Johnny Remember ME" by John Leyton, "Crazy Drums" by The Outlaws, "North Wind" by Chick Lewis, "Singing The Blues" by Jason Eddie & The Centremen, "Night Of The Vampire" by The Moontrekkers, and "The Angry Desert" by The Sound Offs. Nino Oliviero & Bruno NicolaiGo Go Go World (aka Il Pelo Nel Mondo) ... LP
Musicor, Early 60s. Sealed ... $11.99
Really groovy sounds from two great Italian film composers of the 60s – Bruno Nicolai and Nino Olivero – both working here to create a wide assortment of different instrumental modes! The film follows in the "Mondo" style of the period – kind of a fake documentary, with scenes from around the world – so there's plenty of global references in the music, while Nicolai and Olivero use electric guitar, organ, trumpet, woodwinds, and other elements that often recall some of the groovier sounds that Bruno would give us later in the 60s – served up on a number of short tracks that include "Dreaming Strings", "Harp In The Night", "Sting Of The Bee", "Music Ranger", and "Sexy Trumpet". William OnyeaborWho Is William Onyeabor – World Psychedelic Classics 5 ... CD
Luaka Bop, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $7.99
Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard before – the rightly legendary musical legacy of William Onyeabor, one of the most enigmatic talents to come from the African scene of the 70s! The work here is all plenty darn funky, but it's also very different from familiar Afro Funk too – as the instrumentation is heavy on keyboards, handled by William with incredible dexterity – and spun out in these soaring lines that bristle with righteous touches that really support the message of his tunes! The vibe mixes in some electro elements with long-drawn rhythms – and the vocals often step aside for lots of keyboard and rhythm interplay, then come in to send things home at just the right moment. Onyeabor's been a pretty elusive cat over the years, and it's taken Luaka Bop quite some time to put this collection together – amazing work that may well make the album one of the most important to ever come from the label – and the first introduction to the non-African world of Onyeabor's incredible sounds. Titles include "Body & Soul", "Atomic Bomb", "Something You'll Never Forget", "Why Go To War", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", and "Let's Fall In Love". CD

William ParkerMigration Of Silence Into & Out Of The Tone World Vols 1 to 10 (10CD set) ... CD
Centering/Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy 10CD set ... $79.99 89.99
An incredible collection of work from the legendary bassist William Parker – not a package of older material, but a full ten albums' worth of new recordings done expressly for this set – showing Parker not only as a budding multi-instrumentalist over the space of the past few years – but also a very collaborative composer, with a much wider range of expression than anyone might have guessed a few decades ago! Parker is still a completely essential part of the avant jazz underground, but he's also emerging as a mature statesman – able to bridge both scenes and generations with material like this – a hugely collaborative effort that features contributions from Lisa Sokolov, Kyoko Kitamura, Ellen Christi, Jalalu Kalvert Nelson, Eri Yamamoto, Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, Andrea Wolper, the Universal Tonality String Quartet, and other groups as well. Each CD features a different side of Parker's creative genius – and together, the package is maybe the richest statement of his powers we've ever heard! CD

✨✧ PrinceAround The World In A Day ... LP
Paisley Park, 1985. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $34.99
A mad bit of soul psychedelia from Prince – a record that sounds better and better over the years, and which stands out from most of his 80s work thanks to some really unique production and songwriting! After Purple Rain, Prince did anything but wince in the face of living up to such a massive crossover smash – and if Around The World didn't move nearly as many units, it stands pretty tall these days. A mix of Revolution pop funk & soul, with a more swirling, self consciously psychedelic pop. Titles include the hit "Raspberry Beret", "Paisley Park" (with melody so strong, no wonder Prince held onto the name for other ventures) plus "Around The World In A Day", "America", "Temptation", "Pop Life", and "Condition Of The Heart". ✨✧ Arthur RussellWorld Of Arthur Russell (3LP set) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3LP ... Just Sold Out!
Music beyond description – a unique blend of disco, funk, avant garde, and dub – the wonderful world of the late Arthur Russell! Russell was a bass player by trade, but he was schooled in both classical and Eastern music forms – and brought an incredibly fresh vision to his work in New York in the late 70s and early 80s. To some, Russell was a groundbreaking disco pioneer – with an offbeat production style and unique conception of rhythm. To others, Russell was a performance artist and avant garde musician – working in circles that included Phillip Glass, David Byrne, and Robert Wilson. This mix of modes was very much a part of the post-disco, post-punk sound of New York at the time – and nobody summarized it (or allowed it!) better than Russell himself. This excellent set from Soul Jazz is one of the first to truly give him his due – and it brings together a large amount of his disco-related projects, plus a few more introspective numbers cut under his own name. The sound is incredible – unlike anything you could categorize – especially on the Russell-titled numbers – and as always with Soul Jazz, the whole thing's beautifully packaged, with rich notes on the music and the person behind it! Titles include "Go Bang (Francois K mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Wax The Van" by Lola, "Is It All Over My Face (Larry Levan mix)" by Loose Joints, "In The Cornbelt (Larry Levan mix)" by Dinosaur L, "Pop Your Funk" by Loose Joints, "Schoolbell/Treehouse (Walter Gibbons mix)" by Indian Ocean, and "Let's Go Swimming (Walter Gibbons mix)", "A Little Lost", "In The Light Of The Miracle", and "Keeping Up" by Arthur Russell himself! Earl ScruggsNashville's Rock/Dueling Banjos/Storyteller & The Banjo Man/Top Of The World ... CD
BGO (UK), Early 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Four post-Flatts albums from the great Earl Scruggs – served up in a single set! First up is Nashville's Rock – a very unusual album from legendary bluegrass musician Earl Scruggs – a set that has him taking on a whole host of famous 60s rock tunes, and turning them into hip banjo-led instrumentals! By the time of the record, Earl had influenced a host of countless rockers – and it's quite a compelling change for Scruggs to handle material from that same scene, but bring it all right straight back to Nashville with his performance! Later Scruggs might end up in territory that was too rockish, but this record definitely has his classic sound right up front in the mix – even on the few tracks that might have a female backing chorus. Titles include "Everybody's Talkin", "Nashville Skyline Rag", "Hey Jude", "Love Is Just A Four Letter Word", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Honky Tony Women", and "Train Number Forty Five". Dueling Banjos is a record that takes its title from the big Deliverance hit by Eric Weissberg – but a set that reminds the world that when it comes to banjo, there's maybe nobody better than the great Earl Scruggs! And while the record has some of the elements of the Earl Scruggs Revue sound – in that his sons Randy and Gary are on the set – the whole thing is also all instrumental, and has a much more bluegrass-oriented vibe – thanks in part to great help from Vassar Clements on fiddle, Josh Graves on dobro, and Chip Young on guitar! The instrumentation is fantastic – and titles include "Peking Fling", "Just Joshin", "Flint Hill Special", "Black Mountain Blues", "Fireball Mail", and "Lonesome Ruben". Storyteller & The Banjo Man is a fantastic return to form for the great Tom T Hall – and a record that hints a bit at the bluegrass direction his later small label records would take! Earl Scruggs and his sons provide great musical backing, while Tom sings lead in that fantastic style of his – sometimes telling his own stories, sometimes singing the words of others – all in a lean, respectful, acoustic-driven setting that's maybe even better than most of Hall's own records at the time! Titles include "Shackles & Chains", "The Engineers Don't Wave From The Trains Anymore", "Song Of The South", "Don't Give Your Heart To A Rambler", "Dim Lights Thick Smoke", "No Expectations", "There Ain't Country Music On The Jukebox", and "Don't This Road Look Rough & Rocky". Top Of The World is a great late career album from Earl Scruggs – a set that features his sons still in the mix, but with a whole sort of production style and presentation that almost makes the whole thing a tribute to Earl's greatness! There's plenty of strong banjo solos in the lineup – and guests include Ricky Skaggs, Tracey Nelson, and the Burrito Brothers – but all used sparingly, with just the right vocal augmentation next to the instrumentation – and plenty of room for solos throughout. Titles include "Till the End Of The World Rolls Round", "Lay Me Down In Dixie", "Roller Coaster", "Carolina Star", "We'll Meet Again Sweetheart", and "Love Gone Cold". CD

Sony/Be With (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A sweet little record from Caiphus Semenya – a South African singer, but one who works here with backings from some top-shelf studio talents in LA – a mix of jazz and fusion players who really bring a great sense of groove to the material! Tracks include two originals co-written with Letta Mbulu – and the mix of South African roots and Cali soul is a bit similar to some of Letta's late 70s work – maybe a bit more upbeat than the political climate in SA warranted at the time, but that sometimes happens when an overseas artist spends a bit of time on the west coast. Titles include "Gumba Boogie", "Play With Fire", "Umoya", "Angelina", "Without You", and "Ziph'Inkomo". LP, Vinyl record album

Epic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
Mindblowing early work from The Staple Singers – six records that are quite different than their later fame on Stax Records during the 70s – and which have a vibe that's different too, yet equally powerful! There's a sublime mix of social politics and spiritual energy going on here – as the quartet are already moving far past standard gospel modes, and mixing their faith with a strong message during these key years of the Civil Rights era – really bridging divides with the music on these albums. The music has that sublime blend that the group perfected right from the start – almost a secret inclusion of a larger social agenda, presented amidst gospel tunes re-arranged by Pops Staples – plus some of his own great tracks too – able to reach across the aisle, and bring so many new ears to the messages the group was putting forth. The box set features six full albums – some never reissued since the LP era – Amen, Pray On, "Why, "For What It's Worth, What The World Needs Now Is Love, and the great live album Freedom Highway – recorded in Chicago! New World (Japan), 2004. Used ... $11.99
A great little set from Studio Apartment – a group who work in the same jazz, soul, and Brazilian-influenced territory as some of our favorite recent artists from Japan! There's a definite Jazztronik sensibility percolating in the mix here – alongside Sleepwalker and Izanami sensibilities – as real jazz instrumentation comes into play with electric keys, cosmic beats, and some occasional vocals that really give the best tunes a solidly soulful finish! About half the set's instrumental, but there's a depth here that holds the whole thing together with a really unified vision – changing colors and tones from track to track, but keeping an ear out for tunes that have a sense of joy and life throughout! Guests include Chieko Kinbara, Monique Binham, and Shihoko Hirata – and titles include "Flight", "Brave Mind", "Iceman", "Straighaway", "Life From The Sun", "Ryu", "Nature Spirit", and "Dive Into The Night". Two rare tracks recorded in New Orleans in the late 70s – both appearing here for the first time ever! "Freaky With You" is an extended ensemble funk number – riffing guitar with the groove, monstrous bass driving the train, and lots of offbeat vocals on the lyrics – plus a very sharp percussion breakdown in the middle – conga that's worth the price of the record alone! "Welcome To My World" is mellower, and shows off a sweet stepping side of the group – a groove that's mellow, but still pretty darn funky – with warm vocals that move alongside the rhythm in a really warm way, and a cool moogy keyboard line that provides a nice accent! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Sweet InspirationsSongs Of Faith & Inspiration/What The World Needs Now ... CD
Atlantic/Spy, 1968. Used ... $16.99
Amazing stuff – the first two albums by the Sweet Inspirations – back to back on one CD! Songs Of Faith & Inspiration is the first album that the Sweet Inspirations cut for Atlantic – and a gospel album that's billed under the name of Cissy Drinkard & The Sweet Inspirations, before Cissy had come to more widely use the name "Houston" as her last name. The style of the material is similar to the group's secular albums on Atlantic – and to the vocal backings they provided for Aretha Franklin – with a sweet, pure, southern soul style that's just great, produced by Tom Down with the same style he was using with Aretha. Titles include "What A Friend", "I Shall Know Him", "He'll Fight", "Without A Doubt", and "Looking On The Bright Side". What The World Needs Now is the group's first secular album for Atlantic, and it's a gem of a female soul record – with the same classic sound you'd hear on Aretha Franlink's Atlantic late 60s LPs, but a different twist because of the girls' amazing talent for harmony vocals. Tom Dowd produced the record with a sweet southern-ish sound, and Arif Mardin provides some lofty string arrangements that take the girls' voices to the heavens! Includes some fine numbers written by Cissy Drinkhard Houston – like "I Could Leave You Alone", "You Really Didn't Mean It", and "Where Did It Go" – plus pop numbers like "Alfie", "What The World Needs Now Is Love", and "To Love Somebody", all completely transformed by the group's style!
