Work Money DeathSpace in Which the Uncontrollable Unknown Resides – Can Be the Place from Which Creation Arises ... CD
ATA (UK), 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
Two wonderfully long-flowing tracks from this hip British group – very spiritual and slow-building, with energy that's very much in the best Alice Coltrane mode of the Impulse Records years! Tony Burkill is on tenor, and has this great mellow-burning approach – perfect for the slow-stepping modal groove that's delivered on piano, guitar, bass, and drums! Added horns, voice, harmonium, and other touches come in from time to time – but they never get in the way of the gentle majesty of the instrumentation at the core – the kind of music you'd want playing as you were going to meet the dawn at the start of a very righteous day. Titles include "Dawn" and "Dusk" – but both are very dawn-worthy! CD

Lenita BrunoWork Of Love ... LP
Nucleus, 1967. Sealed ... $9.99
A light and dreamy set of Brazilian vocal tracks – recorded in 1967, and featuring the voice of singer Lenita Bruno, a strong 60s talent with a style that's somewhat like Sylvia Telles. Arrangements on the set are by Clare Fischer – who plays piano, organ, and electric harpsichord in a small combo that also includes guitar by Laurindo Almeida, flute by Bud Shank, and percussion by Paulinho. Some tracks augment the ensemble with a string quartet – who give the material an appropriately sad tone, perfect for Lenita's blue-styled vocals. Includes a nicely grooving version of "Chove Chuva", plus the tracks "Wave", "Winter Moon", "Sing Sing More", "Dindi", "Stay My Love", and "Someone To Light Up My Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Don't be put off by the Al Hirschfeld image on the front of this one – because the record's a nicely laidback effort that gets way past the show biz cover! The tunes are all Gershwin numbers, but presented in ways that differ greatly from Ella's Verve Songbook reading of them a few decades before – and titles include "A Foggy Day", "Nice Work If You Can Get", "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off", and "But Not For Me". VariousKent & Modern Records Blues Into The 60s Vol 1 – Dirty Work Going On ... CD
Ace/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A huge collection of rare blues material from west coast powerhouse label Kent/Modern Records – a really important indie during the postwar R&B scene in LA, still going strong here well into the 60s! Modern was a real pioneer in recording electrified blues during the 50s – maybe every bit as important as Chess Records, with a roster of talent that drew from the Memphis and Texas scenes, and which also included blues musicians who'd migrated west as well! The Modern approach always lived up to its name – helping evolve rootsier styles into more sophisticated modes, often unlocking currents of jazz and nascent soul in the music – so that by the time of the 60s, the company (and its related Kent Records imprint) kept on moving things forward – recording so much amazing work, a good deal of it was never even issued on record at the time. That's definitely the case here – as the collection brings together a large number of tracks that either appear here for the first time ever, or which didn't make their debut until Japanese CD releases back in the 90s – brought together in a collection of 26 tracks with plenty of appeal for fans of raw soul too. Titles include "Blues In G Minor" by Big Jay McNeely, "Let Me Be Your Eagle Baby (take 1)" by King Solomon, "Go Ahead (take 1)" by Fillmore Slim, "Jimmy's Special" by Little Joe Blue, "Sweet Little Angel" by Larry Davis, "Jealous Woman" by T-Bone Walker, "On My Way Back Home (alt)" by Flash Terry, "Fast Gun Annie" by Billy Ray, "Consider Yourself (ext)" by Stacy Johnson, "Down Now (take 3)" by BB King, "New Figure" by King Solomon, and "One Thing We Know" by Flash Terry. ✨✧ T2It'll All Work Out In Boomland (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Decca/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
The one and only album from T2 – an incredible British group with a sound that should have been huge! Like some of the best of their generation, T2 is a trio – featuring some heavy guitars from Keith Cross, vocals by Peter Dunton, and rumbling bass from Bernard Jinks – all brought together with a sound that's sharply focused in its vision, yet freely expressive in execution. There's a great mix here between jamming passages and softer sensitivity – never as forced as on some of the early King Crimson records, but with a similar sort of sharpness and range that should have gotten this one to a much wider audience. Titles include the side-long "Morning", plus "In Circles", "JLT", and "No More White Horses". This wonderful package really increases the too-small legacy of the group – as it features 16 more bonus tracks – titles from the rare T2 record, and other material recorded in 1971 and 1972 – tracks that include "Fantasy", "Careful Sam", "Minstrel", "T2", "PDQ", "Closing Your Eyes", "Into The Red", "And Time", "Looking Back", "Questions & Answers", "The Gambler", and "Timothy Monday". Eivind Aarset/Jan BangSnow Catches On Her Eyelashes ... LP
Jazzland (Norway), 2021. New Copy ... $22.99 29.99
An album with a really beautiful title – a reference to "My Favorite Things", perhaps – and one that's got a sound that's equally beautiful to match – very different than some of the noisier music we've heard from Eivind Aarset in the past! Yet as with all his other great records, there's a real sense of abstraction here – as Eivind plays guitar, bass, and adds in plenty of electronics – next to work from Jan Bang on a range of samples, programs, and editing – a sense of sound that's layered, sometimes densely, but never darkly – almost taking us back to EG Records territory right at the end of the 70s. The set features a few guests along the way – Nils Petter Molvaer plays trumpet on one track – but most tunes are quite spare, and very lovely. Titles include "Before The Wedding", "Two Days In June", "Purplebright", "Asphalt Lake", "Monochrome", and "Night Spell". LP, Vinyl record album

Ahmed Abdul-MalikJazz Sounds Of Africa (Music Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik/Sounds Of Africa) ... CD
New Jazz/Prestige, 1961/1962. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Revolutionary work from one of the most important talents you never heard of – 2 jazz/world classics from the amazing Ahmed Abdul-Malik! The CD begins with The Music Of Ahmed Abdul Malik from 1961 – a record that has the bassist working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz – and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The Hustlers", and "Oud Blues". Sounds Of Africa is one of Malik's greatest – a combination of both his modern and experimental sides, a mixture of off-key hardbop and odd instrumentation that includes cello, oud, and lots of extra percussion. The fantastic Tommy Turrentine plays trumpet on one cut, Richard Williams plays on all others – and the percussionists include Chief Bey, Montego Joe, and Andrew Cyrille! Titles include "The African Bossa Nova", "Wakida Hena", "Communication", "Suffering", and "Nadusilma". CD

ECM (Japan), 1978. Used ... $14.99
A record full of rich tones and cascadingly lyrical lines – and a set that features the wonderful pairing of John Abercrombie's guitar and the piano of Richie Beirach! Beirach seems to ground Abercrombie even more than usual – still letting John have those atmospheric qualities in his notes, but with a sense of flow and focus that we really appreciate – energy that might also come from the work of George Mraz on bass, and Peter Donald on drums. Tunes are simple and elegant, but say a hell of a lot with a little – and the album's maybe as perfect a summation of the ECM approach to guitar at its best as some of the early Pat Metheny albums. Titles include "Arcade", "Nightlake", "Neptune", "Alchemy", and "Paramour". CD

✨✧ Abstract OrchestraDilla ... LP
ATA (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
There's nothing abstract here – as the set's a fantastically-focused tribute to the late Jay Dee – put together in a style that's mostly jazz, but which also has some great vocal touches too! The music's roots are in hip hop, but the presentation here is awash in strong work on saxes, trumpet, and trombone – used over rhythms that are played live, and which have this warm glow that's like 70s jazz funk, filtered through the hop hop generation! Emphasis is on horn solos, but the set also features twin female singers – who provide some chorus vocals, and a warm link between the instrumental modes in a really great way. So maybe consider this both a soul and a jazz remake of the world of Dilla – and a great one too. Titles include "Welcome To Detroit/The Diary", "Dilla Mix 1", "Official/Fall In Love", "Love", "Angel"," King", "Two Can Win", "Raw Sh*t", "Workinonit", and "Stop". LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy Ace & Al TNT BraggsBuddy Ace Meets Al TNT Braggs ... CD
Duke/Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A double-header of a set – one that brings together rare work from two great 50s singers on the Duke/Peacock label – both of whom get a fair bit of space in the collection! Buddy Ace was actually named James Land at the start, but was dubbed Buddy Ace after the death of Johnny Ace – one of the first big Duke records stars, and a key force in the early years of rock and roll. Buddy's style is maybe a bit warmer at times than Johnny, but he also gets all the fantastic Duke Records production that made Bobby Blue Bland so great at the start – core blues augmented with larger arrangements, and jazz currents that can make the music a lot more sophisticated than on other labels! There's definitely plenty of blues in the mix, including strong guitar leads on some tunes – and titles include "Screaming Please", "This Little Love Of Mine", "From These Roots", "It Can't Be True", What Can I Do", "Back Home", and "Won't You Reconsider". The set then moves onto a great batch of work from Al TNT Braggs – a singer who definitely earns the explosive part of his name – especially on the upbeat numbers that are equal parts R&B and early rock and roll! Al's got a very distinct, dexterous approach to the music – one that's also really pointing the way towards 60s soul – on titles that include "Chase Em Tom Cat", "A Little Bit Closer", "We Belong Together", "Easy Rock", "You're Something Else", and "Cigarettes & Coffee". One of Barbara Acklin's beautiful albums for Brunswick, and one of the hardest to find of the bunch! This might be because the record features a few cuts from other albums – in a style that was sometimes oddly used by Brunswick when issuing albums on its big stars – but don't let that put you off, as the record's got some wonderful original material that's totally worth it, especially if you dig Barbara's famous brand of Chicago soul! There's loads of great tracks on here that Barbara wrote with Eugene Record – including "I'm Living with a Memory", "More Ways Than One", "Make the Man Love You", and the sweet loping "I Did It", very much in the mode of some of her best other work. Eugene Record produced, and Willie Henderson conducted the band with a wonderful Chicago soul sound! CD

Genius work from Pepper Adams – one of those players we sometimes forget about, then drop the needle on a record like this and fall in love with his music all over again! Adams blows baritone sax like nobody else – with a sensitivity that you'd normally hear on tenor, and a mix of modes that should have made him one of the most respected saxophonists of his generation – something that maybe didn't happen because of his unusual horn! Yet although big, there's nothing heavy about the way Pepper handles his horn – as you'll hear especially on the few ballads – and as usual for Adams, his choice of a group is great too – a sharp lineup with Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums. The group works here in a really raw blend of heavy percussion and riffing guitar – produced with lots of edge and echo, and delivered with the spirited vibe you'd expect from the ensemble's appearance on the cover! There's plenty of criss-crossing between the lead and chorus vocals on the set – but the guitar gets plenty of space too, and has this really sharp quality that's clearly informed by psych, but funkier overall – and very different than any work of the sort from farther down the continent. Drums are super-heavy, and the basslines match as well – on titles that include "Albaki", "Taali", "Chamaa", "Aflana", "Kaddaba", "Moulate Salef", and "Al Hadaoui". CD

The material here was all recorded for radio in Seattle, and the fidelity is excellent – sounds that are sharp as any of the group's key live albums of the period – with some very hip announcements between a few of the tracks! And unlike some radio live issues on the market, this one is nice and long – with eight long tracks that really open up – full of magical moments from Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Titles include "Sticks", "Big P", "The Girl Next Door", "Back Home Blues", "Hippodelphia", "74 Miles Away", "Morning Of The Carnival", and Somewhere". CD
(Excellent package – with great mastering, and a 28 page booklet of notes!)

Cannonball AdderleyThem Dirty Blues ... LP
Riverside, 1960. Very Good ... $24.99
One of the all-time great ones by Cannonball! This record captures him in the prime of his early soul jazz fame – working with an unbelievably heavy quintet that featured Bobby Timmons on piano (with Barry Harris sitting in on a few tracks), Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and brother Nat Adderley on cornet. The quintet forged a sound that made them an immediate hit – and which had their tight, jagged, soul-drenched sound getting copied by everyone. The record features some amazing soul jazz standards – like Nat's original version of "Work Song", the first-ever record of Timmons' amazing "Dat Dere", Cannon's slinky "Them Dirty Blues", and the jaunty groover "Jeannine", a wonderful cut by Duke Pearson that never sounded better! The CD features alternates of "Work Song" and "Dat Dere" – for a total of 9 tracks in all! LP, Vinyl record album
(Small blue label/silver text mono pressing, RLP 12-322, with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has some light wear and a split top seam – but vinyl is nice and clean.)

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyWhy Am I Treated So Bad? ... LP
Capitol, Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $14.99
If you ever needed a key example of the genius of Cannonball on Capitol Records, this tight little set may well be it! The record's got all the best elements of a Cannon classic firmly in place – production by David Axelrod, electric piano by Joe Zawinul, and some tremendously soulful work from Cannon and Nat Adderley on their respective horns – all presented with a sense of relaxed tightness (if we can use such a phrase) that's jaw-droppingly brilliant all the way through! Cannon speaks a bit and pushes the band into action with charisma and warmth caught nicely by Axelrod's recording – and the band grooves on long, snakey tunes that mix equal parts funk and soul jazz together, coming up with the quintessential Adderley groove on nearly every number! Tracks include the seminal "Why Am I Treated So Bad", plus "Mini Mama", "I'm On My Way", "One For Newk", "The Scene", "Yvette", and "The Other Side". LP, Vinyl record album

The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tunes include two great Bargard originals – "Rob's New Tune" and "War Zone" – plus versions of "Rwanda", "Sermonette", "Corcovado", and "Unit Seven". CD

Lonehill (Spain), 1959/1960. Used ... $11.99
Early Quincy Jones jazz tunes – played by a legendary crew of musicians – led in separate spots by Benny Bailey, Nat Adderly, Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Thompson and Toots Thielemans! The tunes are from the Late 50s/early 60s era when young Quincy was being groomed to be another Duke Ellington (boy, if the world only knew!) The sessions were cut in Sweden with a rotation of Swedish players, plus American Joe Harris on drums on some tracks – and some of the work originally appeared on a Benny Bailey album for Argo, as well as on a Roy Haynes set for Mercury. The material is a batch of mostly clean-toned, bop-learned jazz, with some leisurely paced bluesy arrangements in spots. Tracks include "The Golden Touch", "Jones Beach", "Tiem Midnight Sun Never Sets", "Fallen Feathers", "Sister Sadie", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "That Old Black Magic", "I Remember You" and more. Far Out (UK), 2007. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
The return of a legend – and a tremendously groovy little record! Brazilian keyboardist/composer Antonio Adolfo's been making records for years – but easily his greatest albums were those cut at the end of the 60s with his Brazuka group – a cool combination of funky rhythms, electric keyboards, spacious production, and female vocals – all wrapped up with that glorious Blue Brazil sound of the EMI/Odeon label. Here, Adolfo recaptures that sound beautifully – returning to modes he hasn't touched in decades – and getting tremendous treatment from the Far Out label, who really help him hit that classic sound right. The record's an instantly timeless set that rivals all of Antonio's wonderful work from many years back – recorded with Adolfo on keyboards, live jazzy rhythms, a bit of strings, and twin harmony vocals from daughters Carol Saboya and Luisa Saboia – soaring out beautifully with a really groovy sound. The whole thing's wonderful – even better than you might expect – and titles include "Bola Da Vez", "Papo Furado", "Luizao", "Eu E Voce", "Tudo E Brasil", "Domingo Azul", "Tao Iguais", "SOS Amazonas", "Sonho Estelar", and "Dono Do Mundo". Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! A wonderful collection – one that features the legendary album by Eden Ahbez, plus other tracks that show his influence on postwar music! First up is the core Eden's Island set – an incredibly evocative record – one of the strangest of its kind, and an audio treasure that we've loved for years! Eden Ahbez first came into public prominence as the man who wrote "Nature Boy" for Nat King Cole – a dark, moody tune that was as mysterious and earthy as the man who wrote it! This album was recorded nearly a decade after Cole's original hit, and features Ahbez almost in Moondog-like territory – working in an amazing setting of odd instruments and exotic percussion – but also singing in this almost spiritualist kind of way! The record's got plenty of ties to the exotica scene of the late 50s – but also stand out from the pack with a mad vision that's all its own – a strange intersection of lines that one might draw between Moondog, Martin Denny, and Anton La Vey! Tracks include "The Wanderer", "Eden's Island", "Tradewind", "Full Moon", "Mongoose", "Market Place", "The Old Boat", "Island Girl" and "La Mar". CD then features 16 more bonus tracks – all compositions by Eden and work that shows others taking up his helm – titles that include "Palm Springs" by Ray Anthony, "Wine Women & Gold" by The Carsons, "Hey Jacque" by Eartha Kitt, "Frankie's Song" by Anita Ray, "Let Me Hear You Say I Love You" by Vicki Young, "End Of Desire" by April Stevens, "Sahara" by Bob Romeo & The Jungle Sextet, and "Song Of The Fool" by The Crew Cuts. Not the Chicago group of AACM fame, but a completely different Japanese combo from the 70s – a very cool outfit who are equally avant in their approach – and work together in a very spiritual blend of acoustic and electric sounds! The album features one long track, improvised in a very organic way – so that the spare sounds build up into these parts rich in meaning, but still with plenty of sharp edges – based on work from Yasuo Shimura on flute, amplified soprano sax, Arp, and radio; Renkichi Hayashi on guitar, ring modulator, and other effects; Nobuyoshi Ino on electric and acoustic bass, Turkish guitar, and tape recorder; Hiroshi Murakami on drums and percussion; and Yuji Imamura on amplified and acoustic tabla, plus other percussion. The sound's as compelling as the instrumental lineup – and the album's comprised of one long jamming track "Air (parts 1 & 2)", with a groove that ranges from funky and break-oriented, to wild and free out-oriented soloing. Airto's in the lead – and blows some beautiful wood flute lines alongside percussion – but the album also features killer contributions from Joe Farrell on soprano sax, Hubert Laws on flute, Keith Jarrett on piano, and Chick Corea on Fender Rhodes – as well as a hip bit of vocals from Flora Purim as well! There's some added horns at parts – but the arrangements are relatively spare and subtle – so that most tracks have a core organic quality, very similar to Airto's work on Buddah/Cobblestone, but given a bit more of a CTI twist. Most tunes are quite long and free-flowing – and titles include "Lucky Southern", "Flora's Song", "Creek (Arroio)", and "Return To Forever". LP, Vinyl record album

A trio of albums from percussionist Airto – with bonus tracks too! First up is Free – one of the coolest, grooviest albums you'll ever hear from the legendary percussionist Airto – a set that mixes his own Brazilian roots with the electric genius of 70s CTI – all with stunning results! Most tunes are quite long and free-flowing – and titles include "Lucky Southern", "Flora's Song", "Creek (Arroio)", and "Return To Forever". Identity is a soaring set of grooves from one of the world's greatest percussionists – a standout set as a leader from Airto, and a key set in his wonderful run of work from the 70s! The album's still got the loose, free feel of Airto's earliest work, and isn't nearly as crossover-oriented as some of the Flora Purim sets from the time – still strongly in a rootsy, earthy sort of vibe – and produced with a very respectful sound by Herbie Hancock. Herbie plays some Arp on the record, and Wayne Shorter brings in some soprano sax too – but the core elements of the album are Airto's range of percussion instruments, keyboards and piano from Egberto Gismonti, drums from Roberto, trombone from Raul DeSouza, and a bit of vocals from Flora. Titles include "Flora On My Mind", "Cafe", "The Magicians", "Tales From Home", "Identity", and "Encounter". Promises Of The Sun is a record that departs nicely from earlier work, yet still keeps all the best elements intact! Airto's percussion work is firmly at the core of the set – giving it a nice acoustic base to work from, while also adding in touches of electric guitar by Toninho Horta, bass by Novelli, and keyboards from Hugo Fattoruso. The groove is a wonderful blend of the acoustic and electric, organic and synthetic – and is often crafted in a majestic vibe that seems to be inspired by the work of Milton Nascimento from the early 70s. Tracks include "Circo Marimbondo", "Zuei", "Candango", "Ruas Do Recife", "Georgiana", and "La De Casa". CD features bonus tracks "Creek (alt version)", "So Tender", and "Jequie". CD

Airto's joined on this set by Hermeto Pascoal – also from the Quarteto Novo group – as well as wife Flora Purim, bassist Ron Carter, and the always-great Sivuca – who plays guitar on the record. There's a swirling blend of jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and free-thinking soul to the set – one that's never been captured so perfectly on other Airto albums – and which has a lean, clean sound that's simply beautiful. The overall sound is quite rootsy, without many fusion touches at all – and Hermeto's reed work really brings in a great edge to the whole session – one that makes the album differ a bit from much of the other Airto/Flora work of the time. Ake's approach is somewhat in the more contemporary school of jazz piano – that way of moving boldly with very carefully-chosen chords – but his work also has a darkness that's very unique, and a balanced sense of pacing that really makes the work of Epstein even more powerful than it might be in a more freewheeling setting. Doc Severinson stands in on trumpet for Adderley on a few numbers – but the real stars of the show are the reedmen, who get plenty of space to do their thing, and seem to show Toshiko's early preference for sharp-edged solos with a lot of feeling. Dee's a singer who's worked in Chicago for years, but we've honestly only begun to appreciate her talents of late – possibly because she's really hipped up her sound a lot over the years, picking up a range of spiritual, soulful influences that push her music to a whole new level – as you might have heard on her recent collaboration with IG Culture. A hokey kind of cover, but a great little album – another easy winner from the team of Eric Alexander and Harold Mabern, easily one of the greatest pairs working together in jazz for the past decade or so! Alexander's got a tremendous tone on the tenor – finely-honed with the maturity of a later Dexter Gordon, but also open to fluid, free moments too – with a sense of joy and exploration that recall our favorite moments on mid 60s Blue Note or Prestige. Mabern is great too – warm on the keys, but never sloppy – a player more filled with soul these days than ever, and always a great accompanist to Alexander's shifting range of modes in a set like this. Drums are by Joe Farnsworth, another trustworthy regular partner to the pair – and Nat Reeves completes the quartet on bass. The great Eric Alexander in a trio mode – soaring out with a lot more space and soul than some of his albums with a pianist – and that's saying a lot, given the wonderfully soulful sound of that work too! The style is a mode that Alexander has explored a bit over the years, but which really comes out with great force here – and opens up a sharper, more biting tone than you might be used to hearing from the saxophonist over his 25+ years of recording! It's almost as if Eric's awoken with a whole new sense of spirit – and we mean that quite literally, as the album has Alexander arising as a very powerful saxophonist in a spiritual tradition – with a sound that's still very individual, but which has links to a legacy that includes Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd – something we never would have said about Eric just a few years ago. The other trio members are key to the sound, too – Doug Weiss on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums – and titles include "Corazon Perdido", "Luquitas", "Mars", "Magyar", "Big Richard", "Second Impression", and "Frenzy". Monty AlexanderLove & Sunshine ... LP
MPS, 1974. Very Good+ ... $18.99
One of those wonderful Monty Alexander albums from the 70s – recorded for the MPS label, and with a very different vibe than some of his later albums in the US! There's a warmth, flow, and soul here that comes through instantly – a way of fitting the piano right in with the rhythms, so that the tunes have this gentle glow and inherent warmth that really makes them sparkle! Part of the energy comes from the rhythm section – a trio that features Ernest Ranglin on guitar, Eberhard Weber on bass, and Kenny Clare on drums – and Weber's bass work is especially good, and there's lots of nice round funky moments in some of the best tracks. Titles include "Feel Like Making Love", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", and "SKJ". LP, Vinyl record album

Resonance, 1982. New Copy 2 CDs ... $22.99 24.99
Unreleased live work from pianist Monty Alexander – recording here with a bit of extra percussion in his trio, which always seems to give his music a nice little kick! The date was captured at Bubba's, in Fort Lauderdale – a club that not only seemed to be a rare spot in Florida that gave musicians a chance to open up like some of the better clubs on the west coast – but one that also did a superb job of documenting some of its best performances over the years! That's definitely the case here – as Monty maybe sounds better than on most of his studio dates of the period – stretching out on nice long tracks, with help from Paul Berner on bass, Duffy Jackson on drums, and Robert Thomas Jr on percussion – the last of whom really keeps things interesting from a rhythmic perspective – in ways that definitely show up on Alexander's keyboard too. Titles include "Love You Madly", "Sweet Lady", "Eleuthra", "Reggae Later", "Arthur's Theme", "SKH", "Swamp Fire", "Fungii Mama", "Montevideo", and "Consider". CD

Warren/Wah Wah (Spain), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
One of the more obscure outings from the British underground folk scene at the start of the 70s – a set that's way way different than contemporary work on the bigger labels, and which sounds as if it was conceived and recorded a fair bit away from the mainstream! The instrumentation is a mix of electric and acoustic guitar, electric bass, piano, and harmonium – with vocals by all three members of the trio, but in ways that are only partly harmonious – as some of the moments are more sung or spoken at cross-purposes – maybe with the energy of some of the madder parts of the Giles Giles & Fripp record, but more acoustic overall. Tunes were all penned by Roger Moore, who produced but doesn't play on the record – and titles include "Devil's Island", "Nickel Man", "Package Tour Mona Lisa", "Smoke", "Goodbye Cindy", and "The Man That I Am". DIW (Japan), 1989. Used ... $18.99
Beautiful trio work from Geri Allen – recording here with a great group that features Paul Motian on drums and some especially great work from Charlie Haden on bass! Haden's bass really figures into the sound of most of the songs strongly – almost leading more than Allen's piano, with a sound that's round and deep-toned, and which really brings a great sense of soul to the set – which is then given a nicely punctuated vibe by Allen's strong piano! Motian, as you might expect, is nicely elliptical – able to move all around the kit, but without ever losing control – and although the performances get a bit outside at times, the whole thing's mostly got a strong sense of soul and a tight rhythmic core. Boldly brilliant work from tenor saxophonist JD Allen – a player who's always been great, but who seems to be hitting a whole new side of his powers in recent years! The set continues a trio format explored by Allen on a previous date – and like that one, it's got a wonderfully unfettered feel – just the bass of Ian Kenselaar and drums of Nic Cacioppo setting the stage, while JD soars out in these long, soulful solos – filled with energy and power that we might not have imagined a decade ago, making some of his strongest statements as a leader to date! Terry Allen has always been one of the most enigmatic figures in Texas music – but the work included here might well be some of his most compelling – even if it is a bit far from the straighter country of his start! Allen's always been a very narrative songwriter – and here, he takes that form one further – in a series of radio plays and longer audio narratives, most of which intersperse sung passages with spoken bits, sound effects, and beautiful music as well! These aren't any sort of sleepy, too-prosaic works – but instead, the sort of material that's always had us link Allen's music with the books of Barry Gifford or Barry Hannah – instantly evocative, and with a vision for storytelling that's completely captivating – a journey begun on his Juarez album, and really extended here. The special package features the first vinyl appearance of a few of these pieces – and 3CDs of music that contain the complete "Pedal Steel", "Torso Hell", "Bleeder", "Dugout", and "Reunion (A Return To Juarez)". Really raw work from this Ghanaian group that emerged from jamming on the streets of Accra – a core quartet that mostly features tuned percussion and stringed instruments – used in a highly rhythmic way along with the vocals! The lineup features kologo, goje, gome, dondo, and kpanlogo – used in these ways that often have the spare strings of the kologo and goje sounding as if they're electrified – sending out these sharp pulses that are really striking! At times, the producer adds in a bit of bass, guitar, or added percussion – but most of the sounds come from the raw interplay of the quartet – which is great enough on its own, even without the presence of a few guests from time to time – such as the legendary Gyedu Blay Ambolley. The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. ❔
A really beautiful solo album from Jon Anderson – best known as the lead singer of Yes, stepping out here with a set that matches the solo projects of Chris Squire and Steve Howe from the same time! Yet unlike those efforts, this one is truly a solo recording – as Anderson not only sings, but handles all the instruments himself – keyboards, guitars, and everything else – folded together in a sound that's very faithful, thanks to work from Mike Dunne, who'd handled a lot of the sound for recordings by Yes! Given that Anderson's not an instrumental virtuoso, like some of his bandmates, the record is a nice change from some of the side-long power jams of mid 70s Yes – tunes that together tell a story, but which have a lyrical, personal vibe that also really suits the charms of Jon's vocals. The set feels nicely like a mid 70s side-chapter of Yes – in ways that are different than the solo records by Howe and Squire – and titles include "Ocean Song", "To The Runner", "Flight Of The Moorglade", "Solid Space", "Dance Of Rampart/Olias", and "Meeting/Sound Out The Galleon". Marisa's a guitarist at heart – and mostly plays electric and acoustic on the record, using the instrument in this spare, open sort of way – far from American roots, but also very American at the same time – informed by all the modern changes on the instrument in the hands of the acoustic underground in recent decades, but delivered with a very down-to-earth approach that's extremely beautiful. Anderson plays a few other instruments over the course of the record – including a bit of Wurlitzer electric piano – bu the guitar dominates, in a wonderful way – on titles that include "Lift", "Sanctuary", "Surfacing", "Cloud Corner", "Sun Song", "Lament", "Slow Ascent", and "Pulse". Andre & JosiAmandla (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tidal Waves, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $12.99 25.99
A classic collaboration between Josi Ndlovu and Andre Abrahamse – both artists who had long roots in a variety of West African groups and projects before this set – and find a way to draw on that work while also finding new energy together in the studio! The tunes have a subtle, soulful sort of vibe – not really Zamrock or Afro Funk, but instead this mellow melding of those modes with others – handled with a nicely glistening production style that's never slick or commercial, but which really finds the best way to make the mellower elements shine. The set's got more than a few message-oriented tracks – which led to it's banning in a number of African nations – and titles include "Children Of Today", "Zimbabwe", "Afrodisco", "Dreaming & Scheming", "Everybody's Trying To Put Me Down", and "Motherless Child". Vince AndrewsLove, Oh Love (with bonus track) ... CD
Gerard/P-Vine (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $14.99
A great little batch of jazzy soul by Vince Andrews – a vocalist and sax player from Columbus, Ohio – which is where he recorded this obscure early 80s set, a record with a vibe that's maybe more 70s overall! The record has a great little groove – kind of that Charles Earland stepping vibe that we love on his late 70s Muse recordings – supported by some sweet organ work from Bobby Floyd, a player we don't know at all, but who really shines here! Most of the cuts just feature a trio – with Matt Wagner on drums, and Vince on alto, tenor, soprano sax, and flute – working through mostly original material that includes "Love Oh Love", "Akila", "The One Who Needs You", "Being With You", and "Vibrating With Vince". CD features a bonus alternate take of "Love Oh Love". CD
