Chess/MCA, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... $3.99
Almost a decade's worth of great work from Howlin Wolf – late 50s and early 60s recordings done for Chess Records in Chicago, nicely packaged up here in an archival series album with full notes on the sessions and music! Nearly all tracks are originals by Wolf – aka Chester Burnett – and instrumentation includes a fair bit of surprisingly noisy guitar, plus piano, bass, drums, and some nice tenor on a few tracks. Titles include "Love Me Darlin", "I Walked From Dallas", "Just Like I Treat You", "I've Been Abused", "Don't Laugh At Me", "I Better Go Now", "New Crawlin King Snake", and "Hidden Charms". CD

Howlin WolfHis Greatest Sides Vol 1 (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Chess/Jackpot, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 19.99
The title definitely gets it right – as this 70s collection brings together most of the best Chess Records material by Howlin Wolf from the late 50s and early 60s – almost all of them small combo sides that present the man in all of his raspy, growling glory! The tracks span a space from 1954 through 1965 – showing a great development over the space of a decade, but no departure at all from that core energy that made Wolf one of the key figures to transform the sound of blues in the postwar years. Other players include Hubert Sumlin on guitar, Otis Spann on piano, Willie Dixon on bass, and JT Brown on tenor – and titles include "Evil", "Spoonful", "No Place To Go", "Down In The Bottom", "Who's Been Talkin", "Wang Dang Doodle", and "Three Hundred Pounds Of Joy". Cadet, 1968. Near Mint- ... $69.99
A killer album of funky blues – recorded by Howlin Wolf during the period when Chess/Cadet was backing its older artists up with some of the newer funk musicians it had working in its studios! The overall sound works quite well – and although purists at the time moaned at the way artists like Wolf, Etta James, and Bo Diddley were being handled (especially with a "we know better than them" message on the cover like this!), the funky blues records from this time actually seem to be some of the most enduring from Chess – especially with younger listeners in the 21st Century! A big part of the success here goes to producers Charles Stepney and Gene Barge – who helped bring together a younger batch of players for Wolf's backing – including Pete Cosey and Phil Upchurch on guitars, Louis Satterfield on bass, and Morris Jennings on drums. Titles include "Spoonful", "Tail Dragger", "Smokestack Lightning", "Red Rooster", "Evil", and "Down In The Bottom". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo Cadet Concept pressing with deep groove, including the Cadet inner sleeve. Cover has some ringwear, 4 inch split in the bottom seam, and "Durham Promo" written in marker on back.)

Howlin WolfMore Real Folk Blues ... LP
Chess, Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... $59.99
A much earlier set of tracks than the first volume of Real Folk Blues from Howlin Wolf – mostly material recorded in the mid 50s, both in Chicago and Memphis – all with a really nitty gritty sort of feel! There's a rough and rootsy mode going on here – one that has Wolf's raspy vocals right up front in the lead, often supported by just a bit of electric guitar to emphasize the more sinister notes in the tunes. All tracks are originals by Wolf (aka Chester Burnett) – and titles include "Just My Kind", "I've Got A Woman", "Work For Your Money", "I'll Be Around", "You Can't be Beat", "You Gonna Wreck My Life", "I Love My Baby", "Neighbors", "I'm The Wolf", "Rocking Daddy", "Who Will Be Next?", and "I Have A Little Girl". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue fade label stereo pressing without deep groove, matrix ending in 1A. Cover has an Electronically Altered For Stereo sticker, some ring & edge wear, and a small peeled spot and some remnants from sticker removal on front.)

Chess, 1966. Used ... $3.99
Classic work from Howlin Wolf – tunes recorded with incredibly raspy vocals, set to a folksy electric guitar sound – one that instantly conjures up images of the south side blues scene that Chess documented so well during the 50s and 60! The work here was recorded over a number of different years – from 1956 to 1965 – and the later tunes show the more trademark style that Wolf was adapting in the mid 60s as his star was beginning to rise with younger audiences around the world. Tracks were penned by Wolf or Willie Dixon – and titles include "Killing Floor", "Tail Dragger", "Natchez Burnin", "Ooh Baby, Hold Me", "Built For Comfort", "My Country Sugar Mama", and "Sittin On Top Of The World". Mack Avenue, 2020. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
Vibist Warren Wolf has always been way more than just a straight soloist in jazz – and here, he takes that role further by bringing in work from two different singers – vocalists Marcellus Shepard and Imani Grace Cooper, each of whom sing a few songs on the set! This isn't a straight vocal album, but instead a jazz set that happens to have vocals – and there are plenty of instrumentals that allow the fantastic sounds of Warren's vibes to flow out in this magical way – usually with a gentle groove that's augmented by excellent work from Brett Williams on Fender Rhodes – a player whose sense of understatement really matches the energy of the leader. Titles include "Vahybing", "For Ma", "In The Heat Of The Night", "The Struggle", "Livin The Good Life", "Sebastian & Zoe", and "Come & Dance With Me" – plus a great remake of "For The Love Of You". ✨✧ Bo Diddley & Chuck Berry/Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, & Bo DiddleyTwo Great Guitars/Super Super Blues Band ... CD
Chess/BGO (UK), 1964/1968. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pair of amazing all-star albums from Chess Records – back to back on a single CD! First up is Two Great Guitars – in which Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry come together in a really unique album for Chess Records in the 60s – and that's saying a lot, given all the groundbreaking sounds we heard from that label at the time! The format is quite unusual – as each side features a long instrumental jam that really lets the guitarists work out their differences – in modes that are almost proto-funk more than blues, rock, or soul – with lots of wicked guitar lines that are way ahead of their time in terms of recording space! The long tracks are "Chuck's Beat" and "Bo's Beat" – but the duo also shine brilliantly on the shorter tunes "Liverpool Drive" and "When The Saints Go Marching In". Next is The Super Super Blues Band – a group that definitely lives up to its name – given that the lineup features the Chess Records stalwarts Bo Diddley, Howlin Wolf, and Muddy Waters! The set's maybe a bit more in the mode of Wolf or Waters than some of Bo's own records – although there's a bit of that riffing spark of his at times – and the tracks are often nice and long, with more than enough room to make you feel like Phil Chess gave these guys plenty of space in the studio to hang out, and find the right way to interact. As much as we love Chess albums with short songs and a soulful punch, we really appreciate it when they can break format and open up on a session like this – which really helps create a unique moment on record! Titles include "Goin Down Slow", "Long Distance Call", "Sweet Little Angel", "Ooh Baby & Wrecking My Love Life", and "Spoonful". CD

A famous date that showcases the Chess Records influence on the sound of the Brit rock scene – one that has a number of key players "giving back" to the label, and working on a special date with Howlin Wolf! Wolf's rough vocals are in the lead on all tracks, and he also plays a bit of harmonica and guitar as well – and other artists include Steve Winwood on piano and organ, Eric Clapton on guitar, Bill Wyman on bass, and Charlie Watts on drums – all players who are respectful of the original bluesy sound of Chess, and who clearly dig the opportunity to show off their chops in the setting. A strange record, and pretty darn goofy – but proof that the Jimmy Smith/Oliver Nelson team could tackle just about anything and make it come up hard and swinging! The album has Nelson arranging a jazz version of Prokofiev's Peter & The Wolf, with Smith soloing out front on most tracks, and lots of nice players in the group, like Billy Butler, Grady Tate, Richard Williams, and Richard Davis. The reed players really stand out, as they play the voices of the characters in the piece, and the album includes some very deft work by Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, Phil Woods, and Bob Ashton. Really cool sounds from 70s Japan – music scored by Jun Fukamachi working under an assumed name, and maybe some of his wildest music ever! The notes here are all in Japanese, so we don't have much in the way of details – but we can say that CD1 features loads and loads of funky tracks – this Wolf Guy must have been one groovy cat – and overall, there's a very strong crime/cop feel to the whole thing – tight drums, riffing guitar, and plenty of sweet keyboards too! CD2 is a bit different, but still has some funky moments too – mixed with others that are more electric, and almost have more Italo horror scoring at times, especially in the moody elements that come from the keyboards! Together, the whole thing is amazing – a stunning sonic journey with a very distinct 70s cinematic feel – 45 tracks in all. CD

Tony AllenSource ... LP
Blue Note (France), 2017. New Copy 2LP ... $36.99
One of the coolest records in years from the legendary Tony Allen – and that's saying a lot, given that his legacy includes famous work as a drummer with Fela Kuti, and a much more recent run of very experimental recordings! This set has Tony soaring out on Blue Note – and working with more of the jazz currents you'd expect from the label – while still, in the Allen legacy, really going for something fresh and unique – as spontaneously creative as it is outright funky! There's definitely some Afro Funk rhythms on the album, but there's also a fuller brace of horns, dedicated to painting sound in rich colors and tones – alongside riffing guitar, organ and keyboard lines, and Tony's own mighty drums – which keep things moving in a straight ahead way, while also filling in the rhythms with wonderfully complicated bits too. The album's as rich and beautiful as you might hope – with titles that include "Cool Cats", "On Fire", "Wolf Eats Wolf", "Life Is Beautiful", "Ewajo", "Moody Boy", "Bad Roads", and "Woro Dance". Beau BrummelsTriangle/Bradley's Barn ... CD
Warner/Real Gone, 1967/1968. New Copy ... $17.99 18.98
Genius work from The Beau Brummels – two albums that no fan of underground 60s rock should be without! First up is Triangle – a tremendous album from The Beau Brummels – one of the lesser-remembered groups from the late 60s Warner hipster heyday! At some level, the group's a folk-rock outfit – with the left-of-center feel of some of Fred Neil's best work for Capitol, and a similar blend of east coast honesty and west coast mind expansion. The format here is remarkably simple, but handled with some nice touches by producer Lenny Waronker, who really brings a lot more out of the band than on their earlier indie recordings. Titles include "Are You Happy", "The Wolf Of Velvet Fortune", "The Keeper Of Time", "Only Dreaming Now", "Magic Hollow", "Painter Of Women", and "Triangle". Bradley's Barn is a crucial album in the sound of late 60s Warner – recorded by west coasters The Beau Brummels in the heart of Tennessee, at the legendary studios of country producer Owen Bradley! This meeting of west and country is fantastic – a really incredible extension of earlier folksy rock styles forged by Dylan, Fred Neil, Tim Buckley, and others – handled with incredible care, and a style that's equally honest and ironic – but coming together with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of – one of those rare few albums that somehow draws from a wealth of inspiration, but manages to make something completely standout in the process – almost a Feelies/Good Earth for its own generation! Tremendous stuff – and titles include "Jessica", "Bless You California", "I'm A Sleeper", "Little Bird", "Turn Around", and "An Added Attraction". CD

Killer work from leading lights of the neo classic funk scene – the mighty Breakestra – their debut for Strut Records and some of the best work they've ever done! Music Man Miles & the crew knock us out each time, and the 4 years between the stellar Hit The Floor LP and this one was worth the wait. The funky undercurrent is the common connective tissue, with deep soul sounds in the mix, too, with multi instrumentalist Miles on lead vocals on a number of tunes, Mix Master Wolf doing his thing on others, plus guests Afrodyte, Chali 2na and the late DJ Dusk – and some tight instrumentals. They run the gamut from stripped down JBs style feverishness, to gritty jazz funk, Latin percussion, and beyond. Breakestra helped kick start the underground funk scene back in the late 90s, and they're as strong as ever a decade later! Titles include "Need A Little Love", "Dark Clouds Rain Soul", "Come On Over" feat Afrodyete, "Back At The Boathouse", "Get It Right", "Show You The Way", "Me & Michelle". "Posed To Be" feat Chali 2na, Mixmaster Wolf & DJ Dusk, "Joyful Noise", "Lowdown Stank", "Set The Sun" and more. CD

Dena's from that old school generation when jazz singers were expected to match their skills with a good bit of wit and intelligence too – the era of Fran Landesman and Tommy Wolf, or Jackie & Roy – and DeRose does a great job of living up to that legacy – playing piano while singing, in a trio that includes Martin Wind on bass and Matt Wilson on drums – with guest work from Houston Person on tenor, Jeremy Pelt on trumpet, and Sheila Wilson on vocals. Titles include "That Second Look", "Cross Me Off Your List", "Ode To The Road", "Nothing Like You", "A Tip Of The Hat", "Small Day Tomorrow", and "I Have The Feeling I've Been Here Before". CD

Dave DouglasBrazen Heart ... CD
Greenleaf, 2015. Used ... $7.99
A wonderful title for this killer from trumpeter Dave Douglas – as the record's one of the boldest, most on-target sets he's had in years – a record that takes us back to his roots, as Douglas works with a quintet of well-chosen younger players. The lineup features Jon Irabgon on tenor, Linda Oh on bass, Rudy Royston on drums, and Matt Mitchell on piano – players who move soulfully with Dave's trumpet in an almost effortless way – embracing his sense of soundshaping and rhythmic progressions, but also finding plenty of space for their own individual contributions too. Most tunes are Douglas originals, and brilliantly written – and titles include "Brazen Heart", "Hawaiian Punch", "Inure Phase", "Lone Wolf", "Ocean Spray", and "Pyrrhic Apology". CD

Grateful DeadWorkingman's Dead (50th Anniversary deluxe edition) (3CD set) ... CD
Warner, 1970. New Copy 3CD ... $30.99 31.99
One of the first giant hits by the Grateful Dead – and a record that has the group tightening things up a bit more, and stepping into some of the country-tinged territory of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers! Turns out, the move is a great one – as the songs come across with a real down to earth charm that maybe humanizes the group a bit more for the uninitiated listener – a mix of northern Cali pastoral with some of the musical dexterity they'd brought with them from the Haight – folded together perfectly, with a quality that's made the album one of their best-remembered over the decades. Titles include "Uncle John's Band" – maybe their biggest hit at the time – plus "Dire Wolf", "New Speedway Boogie", "Cumberland Blues", "Casey Jones", "Easy Wind", "High Time", and "Black Peter". Special 3CD version comes in a cool lenticular cover – and features 2CDs' worth of a never-issued live set – recorded at the Capitol Theater, in Port Chester, NY on February 21, 1971. Loads of extra tracks – and the Dead in their best live mode from the time! CD

Jackie & RoyJackie & Roy (plus Sing Baby Sing) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Storyville/Muzak (Japan), 1955. New Copy 2CD ... $24.99
Two rare Storyville albums from the tremendous vocal team of Jackie & Roy – back to back in a single set! First up is the self titled Jackie & Roy – one of the first albums ever from the team of Jackie Caine and Roy Kral – and one of the best, too! The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover". Sing Baby Sing is sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with Charlie Ventura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". Afrostrut (UK), 1974. Used ... $6.99
A totally sweet bit of Afro Funk from the 70s – cut in England by Nigerian sax player Peter King! King was an incredible talent back in the day – having started his groove on the Nigerian scene, then travelled globally to pick up a wealth of influences from soul, jazz, and funk acts in England and the US. You can definitely hear those influences coming together on this set – a masterful batch of grooves that's one of the hardest-hitting albums of its sort that we can think of! The sound is incredible – with horns jamming on guitars jamming on beats – no vocals, just some occasional shouts by the group when they get particularly excited about the music. Great all around – with a refreshing sound that's a real change from the Fela groove! Titles include "Go Go's Feast", "Shango", "Prisoner Of Law", "Freedom Dance", "Mr Lonely Wolf", and "Watusi". CD

A very cool record from saxophonist Robert Mavouzny and trombonist Al Lirvat – the latter of whom also cut some biguine albums on the French scene of the 70s! This set's maybe a bit straighter jazz, but you can definitely hear some unusual touches at play – as the group opens up with help from Xavier Chambon on trumpet, Wolf Schubert on piano, Jack Sewing on bass, and Michael Silva on piano. A few moments are more swing, but others are more offbeat – a very unusual session! LP, Vinyl record album

Afrasia/Pure Pleasure (UK), 2014. Sealed 2LP ... $24.99
We've loved Carmen Lundy since the very first time we heard her voice – and that love has only continued to grow over the decades, as she's given us a tremendous run of great records and wonderful music! This time around, Lundy's still strongly in the jazz side of the spectrum, but also brings in a bit of the soul music promised in the title – working in sharp focus on a set of well-penned original tunes that really open up her vocals – most of which feature the legendary Patrice Rushen on keyboards, too! There's an understated brilliance here that really lives up to Lundy's legacy – a way of putting over a tune without every overdoing it – a lesson that's been learned in jazz, but which also has a great impact here in a slightly different setting. Other players on the record include Warren Wolf on vibes, Geri Allen on Fender Rhodes and piano, Darryl Hyall on bass, and Bennie Maupin on soprano sax – and titles include "Grace", "Kindred Spirits", "Life Is A Song In Me", "Soul To Soul", "When Will They Learn", and "Grateful (parts 1 & 2)". The movement here is the Civil Rights movement – recalled through the words of Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Rosa Parks, and Dr Martin Luther King Jr – then set to jazz instrumentation by a wonderful lineup that includes Warren Wolf on vibes, Steve Wilson on alto and flute, Ron Blake on tenor and soprano sax, Michael Dease and Steve Davis on trombones, Lew Soloff on trumpet, and Geoffrey Keezer on piano. Four different figures each take on the voices, with an approach that's as great as the music – actors Wendell Pierce, Vondie Curtis Hall, and Dion Graham – plus poet Sonia Sanchez – often shifting the words of the key figures throughout a single musical work, with results that are surprisingly powerful. Miles has a wonderful way of letting the right sort of spaces fall between the notes – a vibe that takes us back to the best early work by Bobby Lyle or Rodney Franklin – and like both of those musicians, he knows that the best way into a groove is to take things easy, and let the music find itself – which it does wonderfully on the mixture of tunes included in the set. Jimmy SmithWho's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? ... LP
Verve, 1964. Very Good- Gatefold ... $4.99
A real treasure, and a record that may well be our favorite Jimmy Smith album for Verve – a masterful meeting of his smoking Hammond work with some swingingly sophisticated arrangements by Oliver Nelson and Claus Ogerman! Both Nelson and Ogerman bring a fuller spectrum of horn work to the album than heard on other Smith sides of the time – using an almost orchestral approach to the backings, one that pushes Jimmy even further into the stratosphere as he solos madly on the organ! But don't think that the larger backings are clunky at all – because they're not – and there's a surprisingly deep soul to all the proceedings on the album, making it one of the tightest, grooviest, and deeply soulful records that Jimmy cut after leaving Blue Note! The LP includes two very long cuts – killer versions of "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Wolf" and "Slaughter On 10th Avenue" – plus shorter takes on "Bluesette", "Women Of The World", and "Wives & Lovers" that are all plenty amazing too! Foxy R&B, and a fair bit of soul as well – wonderful work from the previously-untapped Paso and Foxy record labels – headed up by legendary Chicago DJ Richard Stamz! Stamz was a key early force in African-American broadcasting in the Windy City – an important DJ not just in blues and soul, but also a TV figure as well – one who really helped get a heck of a lot of great music started in the early days of soul! This package features some real killers by artists who do a great job of skirting the rough line between blues and soul in Chicago in the 60s – some of whom would record more famously on other labels, like One-Der-Ful, but who really sound great here. A wicked reinvention of the sound of Bo Diddley – a set that electrifies his groove even more than before – and takes him into the same mix of funk and blues that Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf were exploring at the time! This album's right up there with the two Cadet/Chess classics by both of those artists – and is possibly even more messed-up too – with lots of jagged edges that push past the usual Bo Diddley groove – even though that classic sense of rhythm is still at the core to drive things along! We don't know who's playing drums, but they've got a nice heavy handed approach that makes these tracks really boom – and the set's in a massively funky style that's taken far too many years to be acknowledged for in the mainstream! Lots of nice ones, including "Shut Up Woman", "Funky Fly", "Power House", "Black Soul", "Elephant Man", and "I've Got A Feeling". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Barry Guy & Ken VandermarkOccasional Poems ... CD
Not Two (Poland), 2014. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic pairing of players – two musicians who really bring out the best in each other in this set of improvisations recorded during the Krakow Jazz Festival – really bold basswork from the legendary Barry Guy, and the kind of ever-changing sounds, shapes, and tones that we always love from the reedwork of Ken Vandermark! Guy seems more on fire here than many other recordings from the time – and there's a photo inside the cover that really reflects the kind of warm intimacy and understanding he has with Vandermark – this really sport of special improvising magic that flows effortlessly throughout. Vandermark plays clarinet and a variety of saxes – and titles include "Black White Red Blue", "Riding The Air", "Curving Of The Wave", "I Will Sing You Of The Moments", "Shadow Cuts Light", and "Nature Is A Wolf". We never get tired of these Lee Perry reissues! The first of several compilations put together by the fine folks at Pressure Sounds documenting Perry's tremendous output from his Black Ark studio, at the peak of his powers in the mid 70s. Mostly drawn from 45s of cuts that attained legendary status because of their small press runs, this superb collection brings together the vocal and dub versions of tracks originally released on the Black Art & Upsetter labels. 13 tracks in all including "Psalms 20" by James Boom, "African Style" by the Black Notes, "Wolf Out Deh" by Lloyd & Devon, "Voodooism" by Leo Graham & "Better Future" by Errol Walker, along with their dubs by the Upsetters. Tha Subliminal Kid leaves the pseudo-intellectual business behind and comes correct with a tight and right mix of bad, bold licks! Spooky takes a turn at his Jamaican heritage with this sweet double disc set, featuring one disc of mixed tracks, and a second with the tracks left all to their own. The mixed set covers all flavors of Jamaican music, from heavy roots, to unstoppable dancehall tracks, deep dubs, easy lovers rock and snapping rock steady cuts, while the unmixed disc pulls out an extra nice selection of entirely different numbers than the mix, but hitting all points too! 72 numbers in all, the first disc includes "Woman Of The Ghetto" by Phyllis Dillon, "Green Onions" by Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, "Deep River" by Aston Family Man Barrett, "Rough Rider" by Lloydie & The Lowbites, "Drum Rock" by the Upsetters, "Jah Jah Me No Born Yah" by Cornell Campbell, "Lock Jaw" by Dave Barker, "I'm Going Down For The Last Time" by the Chosen Few, "Out Of Order Dub" by Prince Jammy & The Aggrovator, "Wolf In Sheeps Clothing" by Big Youth, "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown" by Augustus Pablo, "Lambs Bread Herb" by Tommy McCook, "Garvey Mead Dub" by the Blackbeard All Stars and "Awesome Dub" by King Tubby & the African Brothers, plus "Sit Dung Pon De Wall" by Mutabaruka, "Melody Maker" by Keith Hudson, "Three Piece Suit & Thing" by Trinity, "Ain't No Sunshine" by Horace Andy, "Black Panta" by the Upsetters, "Dub Of The Traveller" by Scientist, "Children At Play" by Marcia Griffiths, "One Armed Boxer" by Lee Perry and "Dread On The Mountain top" by Tappa Zukie on the unmixed disc, plus lots, lots more! ✨✧ Beau BrummelsTriangle (colored vinyl pressing – mono) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A tremendous album from The Beau Brummels – one of the lesser-remembered groups from the late 60s Warner hipster heyday! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Birdsong EnsembleImvuselelo ... LP
Sun (Netherlands), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from this contemporary ensemble – a group who seem to bring together older styles of spiritual and South African jazz, but who recorded this whole album in Switzerland! The tracks are long and exploratory – often with a rhythmic pulse, but at times a bit freer, too – that balance between spiritual and loft jazz that some artists hit in the mid 70s – served up here with trumpet from Mandala Mlangeni, tenor from Max Treutner, alto from Benedikt Reising, bass from Oz Yehiely, and drums from Felix Wolf! The lack of piano really makes a difference – as the horns are very free to roam around, as the drums occasionally do to – on titles that include "Tau Ya Afrika", "Chicken Dust", "Homelessness", "Amachokolette", and "Imvuselelo". Del Tha Funkee Homosapien, Kid Koala, and Dan The Automator pool their skills for this dawn of the 2000s sci-fi hip hop classic – the masterful Deltron 3030! The guest list is almost too long to get into, but Money Mark, Prince Paul, PB Wolf and Mr. Lif are all here, along with many others. One of the benchmark albums in the leftfield underground hip hop canon – and a hugely influential set that burst the doors wide open for the more creative spirits in the hip hop and even experimental pop. Tracks include "State Of The Nation", "3030", "The Fantabulous Rap Extravaganza", "Things You Can Do", "Positive Contact", "St Catherine St.", "Virus", "Mastermind", "National Movie Review", "Time Keeps On Slipping", "Turbulence (remix)", "Battlesong", "Memory Loss" and more. ✨✧ Grateful DeadWorkingman's Dead (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Warner, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Don ShinnTemples With Prophets (180 gram vinyl with bonus 7 inch) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Columbia/Sunbeam (UK), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A hell of a groove from organist Don Shinn – one of the legendary albums recorded for the Landsdowne Series in the UK at the end of the 60s – and like the rest, a set that turns conventional jazz on its ear! Shinn plays Hammond, and a bit of piano – but hardly in ways that echo the American scene, save maybe for some of the changes of Larry Young – but even then, maybe more in the mode of Young when he would start to jam a bit more in the 70s – as Don works here alongside guitarist Paul Hodgeson, who's not afraid to add in some exotic elements to his strings – with bass from Eric Ford and drums from Peter Wolf – all delivered with the intensity of a group who are clearly aware of the changes in rock, but still lean more heavily towards jazz. This isn't fusion, and it's not really prog either – but a very special blend that makes the album a treasure through and through, on titles that include "Pits Of Darkness", "A Minor Explosion", "The Jolly Dance", and "Hearts Of Gladness". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Citrus SunRide Like The Wind ... CD
Dome (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic little record from Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick – served up by a project with a slightly different vibe than his famous group Incognito – but a sound that's every bit as soulful! There's maybe a bit more jazz in the mix here – a focus even more on the great instrumentalists that Bluey works with – with long keyboard solos from the leader himself, plus trumpet from Dominic Glover, piano from Matt Cooper, guitar from Francisco Sales and Jim Mullen, and some other great contributions too! There's definitely still some vocals on the set – work from Imaani, Joao Caetano, and Natalie Williams – but a good portion of the set is instrumental too. Titles include a great cover of Marcos Valle's "Vontade De Rever Voce", the Harry Whitaker tune "Send Me Your Feelings", and (surprisingly!) the Christopher Cross AOR standard "Ride Like The Wind" – redone here as a beautifully soulful tune. But the best stuff might be the original tunes – including "The Stallion Rides Again", "Calling Mr Wolf", "Refugee", and "All Mine" – plus the longer "Krabi Suite (parts 1 to 5)", which takes up most of the end of the album.
