Charizma & Peanut Butter WolfBig Shots (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Stones Throw, 2003. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $30.99 32.99
The long lost Charizma tapes are unearthed and see the light of day! We're real suckers around here for the salad days of the early 90s, before "underground" became a tag line for savvy promoters and music industry folks, and just meant an emcee straight spitting creative rhymes over tight, spare beats, which is exactly what you'll find here. We're not entirely certain all these tracks were set to be released on the Hollywood Basic album that never saw the light of day, but we are certain they're all dope, and a lost, but very necessary, piece of the West Coast puzzle. Includes "Here's A Smirk", "Methods", "Jack The Mack", "Talk About A Girl", "Tell You Something", "Gatha Round", "Devotion", "My World Premiere", "Ice Cream Truck", "Fair Weathered Friend" and "Soon To Be Large". LP, Vinyl record album

Chess/MCA, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Almost a decade's worth of great work from Howlin Wolf – late 50s and early 60s recordings done for Chess Records in Chicago, nicely packaged up here in an archival series album with full notes on the sessions and music! Nearly all tracks are originals by Wolf – aka Chester Burnett – and instrumentation includes a fair bit of surprisingly noisy guitar, plus piano, bass, drums, and some nice tenor on a few tracks. Titles include "Love Me Darlin", "I Walked From Dallas", "Just Like I Treat You", "I've Been Abused", "Don't Laugh At Me", "I Better Go Now", "New Crawlin King Snake", and "Hidden Charms". CD
(Out of print. Booklet has a sticker spot.)

Howlin WolfLive & Cookin At Alice's Revisited ... LP
Chess, 1972. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Down home early 70s blues from Howlin Wolf – not as funky as some of the other blues albums on Chess at the time, but with a nice rough and ready edge that really lives up to the legacy of Howlin Wolf! Instrumentation includes a few guitars, tenor sax, piano, and bass – and Wolf himself plays a bit of harmonica – and the overall feel is very much in keeping with the kind of small club electric sets you might have caught on the south side of Chicago at the time. Titles include "Just Passing By", "I Didn't Know", "Mean Mistreater", "Call Me The Wolf", "Don't Laugh At Me" and "When I Laid Down I Was Troubled". LP, Vinyl record album

A killer set from Warren Wolf – and a record that's much more his own than you might expect from the title! Sure, Warren plays tunes made famous by some of his predecessors on the vibes – including Bobby Hutcherson, Cal Tjader, and Roy Ayers – but he handles the music with this soulful, soaring quality that's very much in line with his best recent work – in a lineup that features soprano and alto sax from Tim Green, piano and Fender Rhodes from Alex Brown, bass from Vicente Archer, and drums from Carroll Dashiell – a cooking lineup who serve Warren well on titles that include "Herzog", "Bopstacle Course", "Captain Senor Mouse", "Vibrations", and "I See You Baby Looking At Me". Classic work from Howlin Wolf – tunes recorded with incredibly raspy vocals, set to a folksy electric guitar sound – one that instantly conjures up images of the south side blues scene that Chess documented so well during the 50s and 60! The work here was recorded over a number of different years – from 1956 to 1965 – and the later tunes show the more trademark style that Wolf was adapting in the mid 60s as his star was beginning to rise with younger audiences around the world. Tracks were penned by Wolf or Willie Dixon – and titles include "Killing Floor", "Tail Dragger", "Natchez Burnin", "Ooh Baby, Hold Me", "Built For Comfort", "My Country Sugar Mama", and "Sittin On Top Of The World". Chess/Jackpot, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The title definitely gets it right – as this 70s collection brings together most of the best Chess Records material by Howlin Wolf from the late 50s and early 60s – almost all of them small combo sides that present the man in all of his raspy, growling glory! The tracks span a space from 1954 through 1965 – showing a great development over the space of a decade, but no departure at all from that core energy that made Wolf one of the key figures to transform the sound of blues in the postwar years. Other players include Hubert Sumlin on guitar, Otis Spann on piano, Willie Dixon on bass, and JT Brown on tenor – and titles include "Evil", "Spoonful", "No Place To Go", "Down In The Bottom", "Who's Been Talkin", "Wang Dang Doodle", and "Three Hundred Pounds Of Joy". A much earlier set of tracks than the first volume of Real Folk Blues from Howlin Wolf – mostly material recorded in the mid 50s, both in Chicago and Memphis – all with a really nitty gritty sort of feel! There's a rough and rootsy mode going on here – one that has Wolf's raspy vocals right up front in the lead, often supported by just a bit of electric guitar to emphasize the more sinister notes in the tunes. All tracks are originals by Wolf (aka Chester Burnett) – and titles include "Just My Kind", "I've Got A Woman", "Work For Your Money", "I'll Be Around", "You Can't be Beat", "You Gonna Wreck My Life", "I Love My Baby", "Neighbors", "I'm The Wolf", "Rocking Daddy", "Who Will Be Next?", and "I Have A Little Girl". A group that definitely lives up to its name – given that the lineup features the Chess Records stalwarts Bo Diddley, Howlin Wolf, and Muddy Waters! The set's maybe a bit more in the mode of Wolf or Waters than some of Bo's own records – although there's a bit of that riffing spark of his at times – and the tracks are often nice and long, with more than enough room to make you feel like Phil Chess gave these guys plenty of space in the studio to hang out, and find the right way to interact. As much as we love Chess albums with short songs and a soulful punch, we really appreciate it when they can break format and open up on a session like this – which really helps create a unique moment on record! Argo, 1963. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Not the folk festival you might expect – especially given that the blues here are electric – and a set that was recorded at a small Chicago club, not some stuffy outdoor concert on the east coast! The album's an early powerhouse meeting of the best Chess blues talents at the time – a date that features Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Howlin Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Willie Dixon in varying settings – mostly getting center spotlight as a solo act with the same backing combo, but also coming together as well at one point too. The whole thing's great – a gritty live record of electric Chicago blues in the 60s – with a strong sense of liveness that really recreates the small club feel! Titles include "Wee Wee Baby", "Sitting & Thinking", "Worried Blues", "Sugar Mama", "Bring It On Home", "Got My Mojo Working", "May I Have A Talk With You", and "19 Years Old". LP, Vinyl record album

A Native Tongues classic from 1991 – one that sounded great way back when, and has held up beautifully over the years – and rightly considered amongst the greatest hip hop albums ever! Wolf In Sheep's Clothing is playful rap at it's best, with funky and and funny cuts galore – but the title is apt, as the wit is pretty sharply barbed – especially when they're skewering hardcore and gangsta cliches. It's as brilliant as ever. Includes the massive "Flavor Of The Month", "Similak Child", "Pass The 40", "To Whom It May Concern", "Butt In The Meantime", "Strobelite Honey", "Are You Mad?", "Blunted", "For Doz That Slept" and more. A strange record, and pretty darn goofy – but proof that the Jimmy Smith/Oliver Nelson team could tackle just about anything and make it come up hard and swinging! The album has Nelson arranging a jazz version of Prokofiev's Peter & The Wolf, with Smith soloing out front on most tracks, and lots of nice players in the group, like Billy Butler, Grady Tate, Richard Williams, and Richard Davis. The reed players really stand out, as they play the voices of the characters in the piece, and the album includes some very deft work by Jerome Richardson, Jerry Dodgion, Phil Woods, and Bob Ashton. The kind of collection that would make Little Red Riding Hood pretty darn scared – and maybe the Three Little Pigs too – as the set is filled with wolf-themed numbers in a mad mix of musical styles! The collection follows that great style of recent musically-mixed releases from the Bear Family label – almost a Cramps-like compilation of unusual rock, blues, R&B, and other styles – mostly pulled from obscure 7" singles of the late 50s and early 60s! There's plenty of weird tracks throughout, all given detailed coverage in the liner notes – and titles include "Hillbilly Wolf" by Billy Strickland, "Wolf Call" by Mark Anthony, "The Big Bad Wolf" by Freddie Bell & The Bel Boys, "Wolf Call Boogie" by Hot Shot Love, "Wolf Pack" by Kid Thomas, "Lonely Wolf" by Ray Harris, "Wolf Boy" by Sammy Salvo, "Wolf Call" by Billy Wallace, "Weird Wolf" by The Ghouls, "The Prowler" by The Idols, and "Wolf" by The Four Mints. Acid Jazz (UK), 2013. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pivotal record in the career of the great Matt Berry – a set that firmly established him as a musical act away from his work on the screen – not his first album, but one that really seems to have Berry finding his very unique voice! A number of the tunes have a slight nod to spookiness – an element that maybe prefaces Berry's role in What We Do In The Shadows – and the instrumentation has more Wicker Man-like elements at times than some of the mod-styled backings on other of Matt's records – although you can definitely hear his love of vintage keyboards on the album too. Tracks include "Vintage Dance", "Farewell Summer Sun", "Bonfire", "The Signs", "Solstice", "Wolf Quartet", "Fallen Angel", and "October Sun". This edition features all sorts of great tracks recorded at the original sessions – almost doubling the size of the record with cuts that include "Fire Chant", "Food Chain Blues", "October", "Sea Chant", "Honky Knock", "Venison Sketch", "The Dawn", and "To The Floor". A record that seems to have Steppenwolf adapting nicely for the 70s – not in any sort of too-commercial way, but with a vibe that brings in all these nice shifts to their sound! The guitar and bass are still plenty high in the mix, but the vocals of John Kay are varied a bit more from track to track, as is the use of organ – which sometimes steps out as a great force in the sound, even at a time when so many other groups had switched to more modern styles of keyboards. Epic/Esoteric (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A trio of albums from the reborn Steppenwolf – all presented here in a single set! First up is Slow Flox – a set that has the group really coming back into the fray, after John Kay had left for a bit and recorded as a solo act! All the raw power of the group is still very much at play here – plenty of searing guitars, at that level that made Steppenwolf such a key precursor to the hard rock sound of the 70s – maybe answered to by the group themselves here, who felt a need to reform and show the younger acts how things were done! But there's also some fuller production at times too – touches of soul inspiration that hit a few of the songs, but without ever knocking the guitars out too much – on titles that include "Get Into The Wind", "Children Of The Night", "Smokey Factory Blues", "Morning Blue", "A Fool's Fantasy", and "Gang War Blues". Hour Of The Wolf is a record that seems to have Steppenwolf adapting nicely for the 70s – not in any sort of too-commercial way, but with a vibe that brings in all these nice shifts to their sound! The guitar and bass are still plenty high in the mix, but the vocals of John Kay are varied a bit more from track to track, as is the use of organ – which sometimes steps out as a great force in the sound, even at a time when so many other groups had switched to more modern styles of keyboards. Titles include "Caroline", "Just For Tonight", "Two For The Love Of One", "Someone Told A Lie", "Mr Penny Pincher", "Another's Lifetime", and "Annie Annie Over". Skullduggery is a set with a skull on the cover and some massive drums at the start – both of which are key signals to the world that Steppenwolf are still alive and well! Despite their lack of chart success at this point, the group are still super-sharp – burning on all the best elements that made their classics so great – burning organ, bubbling basslines, searing guitar, and those vocals from John Kay that really send things over the top – schooled on soul in the 60s, but turned much more towards a hard rock standard here – on titles that include "Rock N Roll Song", "Life Is A Gamble", "Skullduggery", "Lip Service", "Pass It On", and "Train Of Thought". 3CD set features two bonus tracks – "Angeldrawers" and "Caroline (mono promo mix)" – plus a big booklet of notes! Sweet electric keys from Kenny Barron – one of those few excellent 70s albums that have the pianist hitting some Fender Rhodes! The record has Kenny playing electric on most of the set – in a mode that's as open, and spiritual as his best work for the Muse label – maybe even better, as the tracks have a freer style, and really open up with a beautiful sense of energy! The other players here really make the record special, too – and include Sonny Fortune on alto sax, Jimmy Owens on trumpet, Buster Williams on bass, Ben Riley on drums, and Billy Hart on percussion – a lineup that really gives the whole thing a level that's right up there with classics on the Black Jazz or Strata East label. As always with the electric piano, Kenny hits some wonderful notes, colors, and tones that make us wish he used the instrument all the time – on titles that include "Sunshower", "Innocence", "Bacchanal", and "Nothing To Fear". Real Gone, Early 1970s. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
An obscure soundtrack, but a great one too – a set of tunes of varying lengths and styles, but all coming together in a really great way! There's a few vocal numbers, and the music has this sound that progresses nicely from the earlier Music Machine 60s recordings from Sean Bonniwell – in ways that are similar to those that some of the supernatural and satanic rockers of the period were using guitars, organs, and other instruments in some mighty cool styles! The production, arrangements, and overall sonic presentation of the music is fantastic – way better than some of the images on the screen for which it was created – and titles include "Wolf Jazz", "Drum The Drum", "Night Time Sneak", "Day Of The Wolves", "Frantic Rock Surprise", "Carousel Insanity", "Drums & Sneaky Vibes", and "Snow Shine Groove". Pino DonaggioHowling ... LP
Varese, 1981. Sealed ... $58.99
Beautiful music for this early 80s horror classic – a film that gets a bit more serious musical treatment than some of its contemporaries! In an era when so many horror composers were turning towards a keyboard-heavy sound, Pino Donaggio still has plenty of full orchestrations here – moody strings that seem to inherit a bit of a Morricone legacy, mixed with other odd, offbeat touches on insolated instruments – used spaciously, in that "less is more creepy" sort of way. Most tracks are short, and work together beautifully – with a vividly narrative quality – and titles include "Doctor's Orders", "Wolf Bites Man", "Animal Magnetism", "Fur From The Maddening Crowd", and "Eddie Lives Again". Warner, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the first giant hits by the Grateful Dead – and a record that has the group tightening things up a bit more, and stepping into some of the country-tinged territory of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers! Turns out, the move is a great one – as the songs come across with a real down to earth charm that maybe humanizes the group a bit more for the uninitiated listener – a mix of northern Cali pastoral with some of the musical dexterity they'd brought with them from the Haight – folded together perfectly, with a quality that's made the album one of their best-remembered over the decades. Titles include "Uncle John's Band" – maybe their biggest hit at the time – plus "Dire Wolf", "New Speedway Boogie", "Cumberland Blues", "Casey Jones", "Easy Wind", "High Time", and "Black Peter". Not the Bay Area effort you might guess from the title – and instead a sweet Chicago session that's easily one of the funkiest records that Buddy Guy ever cut! There's a great mix of funk and soul mixed in with the blues – thanks to arrangements from Charles Stepney and Gene Barge, who groove Buddy up in the same new funky mode that Howlin Wolf and Muddy Waters got from Chess Records at the same time. A few cuts are more stripped-down and classic – but most have this great tight groove, with instrumentation by Stepney on some surprisingly funky drums, plus Matt Murphy on guitar, Phil Upchurch on bass, and Gene Barge on tenor sax. Titles include "Goin Home", "Buddy's Groove", "She Suits Me To A Tee", "Every Girl I See", "Too Many Ways", "Crazy Love", "Keep It To Myself", and "When My Left Eye Jumps". CD

Jackie & RoyJackie & Roy (plus Sing Baby Sing) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Storyville/Muzak (Japan), 1955. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $8.99 24.99
Two rare Storyville albums from the tremendous vocal team of Jackie & Roy – back to back in a single set! First up is the self titled Jackie & Roy – one of the first albums ever from the team of Jackie Caine and Roy Kral – and one of the best, too! The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover". Sing Baby Sing is sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with Charlie Ventura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". Rahsaan Roland KirkDog Years In The Fourth Ring (Rare Live Material & Natural Black Inventions – Root Strata) ... CD
32 Jazz, 1960s/1997. Used 3 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest contributions made by the 32 Jazz label so far has been the rich amount of classic Roland Kirk material they've released on the market. The best of Kirk's work has been out of print for years, and like the folks at 32 Jazz, we think that's a darn shame – which is why we're extra-excited about a set like this! This nicely (and strangely) packaged 3 CD set features 2 CDs worth of previously unreleased live material – recorded in the years 1964 to 1975, by jazz recordist/archivist George Bonafacio. The material is amazing, and definitely gives proof to the claim that Kirk's live sets were even more amazing than his studio recordings. There's a wealth of great stuff here that really opens up an understanding of Kirk's 60s and early 70s years – and titles include "Rahsaantalk", "Misterioso", "Jammin With A Wolf", "Sister Sadie", "Blues For Alice", and a very groovy "Multi-Horn Medley". And if that's not enough, the 3rd CD of the set features the totally rare Natural Black Inventions album, which Kirk recorded for Atlantic. The record's got an amazing sound: Roland plays solo (mostly), and without the aid of overdubbing, to create these amazing soundscapes of multiple horns and circular breathing. It's filled with these fantastic throbbing pulsating reed lines, with one horn blowing rhythm, and one playing an adventurous solo – and both being blown live a the same time! Tracks include "Black Root", "Raped Voices", "Day Dream", and "Something For Trane That Trane Could Have Said". 3 great CDs of material by one of our favorite-ever reed players – and nicely priced, if we do say so ourselves! Svart (Finland), 1971/1972. Used ... $2.99 4.99
Nothing serious here – as the sound is soulful, jazzy, and in the hippest fusion spirit of the time – very long, open tracks by a small combo led by Heikki Sarmanto on Fender Rhodes, on tracks that are in the more exploratory side of the Miles Davis/Herbie Hancock spectrum! The work here represents the Finnish fusion underground at its early peak – really finding its own voice, and a strong sense of space that sets it apart from some of the more rockish fusion from more southern spots on the continent – and Sarmanto's keyboard work is wonderful throughout – as much concerned with the rhythms and leadership of the group, as with its own presence. Core quartet players include Lance Gunderson on guitar, Pekka Sarmanto on bass, and Craig Herndon on drums – and this second volume also includes some vocals from Maija Hapuoja, a jazz singer with the more open styles of the time. Eero Koivistoinen plays soprano sax on one track – "Muy Bonita Cuidad" – and other titles include "Grass Dream", "Ibiza", "Fallen Grace", "Wolf", "Broadway 5821", "Le Petit Soldat", "Some Wandering Bushmen", and "Like A Fragonard". VariousDeutsche Elektronische Musik 4 – Experimental German Rock & Electronic Music 1971 to 1983 (3LP set – with bonus download) ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $41.99 49.99
A really fantastic compilation – and one that will take your collection of German electronic music far past the familiar territory of Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream! This series has always been great, but it also seems like the longer it goes, the deeper it digs – which is definitely the case here – as the genius compilers at Soul Jazz mix together rare cuts from better-known names, and more obscure artists from the 70s – in modes that also move past straight electronic music, to include some funky bits, proggy moments, and a nice shift between vocal and instrumental focus – so that there's a really amazing world of music within. Titles include "Pink Sails" and "Driving Sequence" by Klaus Weiss, "Wolf City" by Amon Duul II, "Guten Aben Leute" by Deutsche Wertabeit, "My Strand Eyed Girl" by Virus, "Patella Black" by Alex, "Dragonsong" by Dyzan, "Deluxe" by Harmonia, "Suleika" by Gunter Schickert, "Schopfung" by Witthuser & Westrupp, "Mellodrama 2a" by Et Cetera, "Nearby Shiras" by Kalacakra, "Tanz In Den Himmel" by Emak, and "Ballet Statique" by Conrad Schnitzler. VariousJ Jazz 3 – Deep Modern Jazz From Japan ... CD
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 32.99
An ear-opening set of Japanese jazz from a time when that nation's scene was really taking off – a period in the 70s when all sorts of new artists and new ideas were really flying around – and leaving behind a huge recorded legacy that's been mostly out of reach for us in the west! Japan always had a few big names in jazz that got exported overseas, but the work here is from some of the smaller names who were still turning out incredible music – much of it only issued on vinyl, and not reissued later – brought together here with copious notes that really tell you a heck of a lot about the music! There's definitely a post-Coltrane vibe going on – lots of spiritual elements, mixed with both moments that are funkier and more soulful, and others that are a bit more freewheeling – often stretched out on extended tracks that really let the artists take off and find their space. Titles include "Black Nile" by Hideyasu Terakawa, "Kirisame" by Ryusei Quartet, "Honey Sanba" by Katsuyuki Itakura, "Cumulonimbus" by Shigeharu Mukai, "Song Of Island" by Yasuhiro Kohno Trio + One, "Phoebus" by Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphinx, "Morning Tiede" by Kohsuke Mine, "Kemo Sabe" by Masao Nakajima, "Song For Hope" by Aki Takase, "Planets" by Masaru Imada Trio + 1, "1/4 Samba" by Tatsuya Nakamura, "Acoustic Chicken" by Koichi Matsukaze, and "Cumorah" by Eiji Nakayama. CD features bonus tracks – "Wolf's Theme" by Seiichi Nakamura, "Burning Cloud" by Ryojiro Kurusawa, and "Groovy Samba" by Hideo Shiraki. CD
