Milt JacksonMilt Jackson (Blue Note 1509 aka Wizard Of The Vibes) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), Early 50s. Used ... $19.99
Wicked early work from Milt Jackson – a record that's got a lot more of an edge than some of his later work with the Modern Jazz Quartet – a near-perfect modernist bop sound that's every bit the best side of Blue Note in the early 50s! The package brings together material from a few different sessions – some originally on 10" LPs – and the core of the material features Jackson in the company of pianist Thelonious Monk, on some tracks that also feature Sahib Shihab on alto sax! John Lewis plays piano on another batch of tracks that are essentially the early MJQ lineup, but with Lou Donaldson on alto too – so they swing with a bit more soul than you might expect. Titles include "Bag's Groove", "On The Scene", "Willow Weep For Me", "Criss Cross", "Evidence", "Tahiti", "Misterioso", "Four In One", and more – 19 tracks all together, including 7 bonus tracks. CD

Shorty RogersWizard Of Oz & Other Harold Arlen Songs ... LP
RCA, 1959. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A pretty darn great record, and a lot more swinging than you'd expect! The basic theme is the Wizard Of Oz – but Shorty makes the tunes groove way way more than they ever did, and thanks to help from hip players like Jimmy Giuffre, Herb Geller, and Bud Shank, the tracks have loads of breakway moments that are nice and jazzy! In way, working in this sort of tightly restricted set was a great way to get Rogers out of his mid 50s slump – when he was writing himself into a corner with the same sort of chamber jazz numbers all the time. In this sort of album, he's already got the basic pattern – and is free to really open up the band and the charts with the sort of creativity that he began his career with. Titles include "The Jitterbug", "Over The Rainbow", "We're Off To See The Wizard", and "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has a small peeled spot on front at the top edge.)

✨✧ Jeff Lorber FusionWizard Island ... CD
Arista/Wounded Bird, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
A real classic from Jeff Lorber – the kind of record that crossed-over immediately, and had a huge influence on so many different scenes! The style is smooth sweet fusion – of a sort that Lorber virtually helped invent, and so many others helped to ruin in later years – but here, things are clean and lean, very focused on the groove – and coming off with a really soulful sound! There's a great mix of acoustic and electric keys that really makes the album cook – giving it a two-dimensional feel that really comes off nicely on every tune – and the core lineup includes Lorber on keys, plus electric bass, drums, and saxes. Titles include "Wizard Island", "Lava Lands", "Shadows", "City", "Rooftops", and "Can't Get Enough". CD

Black SabbathBlack Sabbath ... LP
Warner, 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $999.99
Huge, dark, and heavy – an album of mythical proportions, and that's a lot to say for a mainstream album – especially one that crossed over as big as this one! It would be hard to imagine the modern rock landscape without this album or group, who provided the template for so much music to follow – and the soundtrack to many bong-fueled excursions to the dark side – a huge legacy in sound, but one that may well still be best begun on this landmark self-titled album! Titles include "Black Sabbath", "The Wizard", "Behind The Wall Of Sleep", "NIB", "Wicked World", and "Warning". LP, Vinyl record album
(UK swirl label pressing with "Philips Record Product" in the "Stereo" copyright cover, including the lined Vertigo swirl inner sleeve! Cover is lightly bumped at the bottom right corner, looks great otherwise with minimal wear!)

John BlairWe Belong Together ... LP
CTI, 1977. Sealed ... $6.99
A strange bit of soul from the later years of CTI – and one of the few albums we've ever seen from the enigmatic John Blair! Blair is an artist with a bit of a cosmic vibe – kind of a spacey sense of soul that maybe fits his appearance on the cover – and which is couched here in kind of a flanged-out rock style that's a bit different than some of the other CTI sessions of the time! D avid Matthews handled the arrangements – mixing in a bit of his funk with some fuzzier currents – and the great Googie Coppola joins John on vocals on a number of cuts, using a spacey soul style that's mighty nice. Titles include "Feather Lite & Honey Smooth", "I'm A Wizard", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "Moonlight Serenade", "We Belong Together", and "Don't Feel That Way No More". LP, Vinyl record album

Cosmic NeighbourhoodLibrary Music Vol 1 (10 inch LP) ... LP
Kit (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
Cosmic Neighbourhood move into the realm of sound library music with this delightful little record – a 10" album that's filled with short, captivating tunes – mostly melodic, and with electronic components, but delivered in a style that's really organic, and very beautiful! At some level, the music almost feels like a more condensed take on some of the Japanese ambient modes of years past – but with a faster progression of ideas, given the shortness of the tunes. Yet there's also something maybe a bit more universal – as if Cosmic Neighbourhood have found a way to create the sort of little tunes that might be rumbling around somewhere out there in nature. Titles include "Nature Spirit", "Waving Tree", "Night People", "Witches Hat", "Pine Wizard", "Overgrown Garden", "Fortune Teller", and "Caterpillar". LP, Vinyl record album

10 Thirty, 2019. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Dibia$e takes on 8-bit video game era samples – putting together a fun, funky blast of a hip hop instrumentals set that pairs retro futuristic synth tones, bleeps and bits from classic video game franchises with more straightforward timeless beatcraft! It's wonderful stuff that for sure speaks to gamers of a certain age, with some random vocal samples from tv spots and other thematic touches, but Dibia$e is a first and foremost a top notch producer, not a novelty album composer – so this works 100% as solid leftfield hip hop instrumentals. Includes "King Bowser", "Link Up", "Tornado Spinkicks", "Ninja Starz", "Dragon Knucklez", "Castlevania (14KT Remix)", "Mushroom 1 Ups", "Wizard Spells", ""Smack Up", "Metroid (Elaquent Remix)", "Vorhees", "Piston Honda", "Power Up", "Castle Lair", "Jungle Stage" and more. Mercury/BSX, 1976. Used ... $7.99
One of the most ambitious records ever made by electronic wizard Patrick Gleeson – a huge talent on the moog and Arp, whose work was featured on key 70s jazz albums by Charles Earland, Joe Henderson, Bennie Maupin, and Herbie Hancock – and that's saying a lot, given that Herbie already played plenty of keyboards himself! This set's a reworking of "The Planets" – the symphonic suite by the composer Gustav Holtz – whose spacey structures are perfect for Pat's other-worldly work on the keys. Trombonist Julian Priester plays on the record – adding a few analog moments next to Pat's work on the EMU Polyphonic Synthesizer – and titles include "Saturn The Bringer Of Old Age", "Neptune The Mystic", "Uranus, The Magician", "Mars The Bringer Of War", and "Mercury The Winged Messenger". ✨✧ HawkwindWarrior On The Edge Of Time ... CD
Griffin, 1975. Used ... $11.99
A stone classic from the legendary Hawkwind – a set that's steeped in all their best space rock modes of the 70s – yet which also has a wonderfully sharp sort of focus too! Keyboards, guitars, and drums soar to the skies right from the start – prefacing an intensity that so many others would later cop from the group, but never get this right – quite possibly because the simple 70s production really helps bring all the best elements right down on the money! In ways, the set almost echoes earlier psych performance and production – yet there's also a cleaner, clearer vibe going on – one that magically steps around the overindulgence of prog and the thinness of some of the later psych of the next decade. Titles include "The Demented Man", "Magnu", "Standing At The Edge", "Warriors", "Kings Of Speed", and "The Wizard Blew His Horn". CD

Reprise/Real Gone, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
A really wonderful little record – by a group who should have been much bigger than they were! Despite the fact that these guys are an obscure rock band with a silly name, the record's a perfect example of the subtly soulful work that was coming out of various west coast sources during the 70s – the kind of album-oriented work that yielded gems for play on underground FM radio, but which has been mostly lost to the shifting sands of time, save for some well-placed rescue in the reissue scene. The gem on this one is the smooth stepper "Fazon", but the album's got a few other nice ones too, with a jazzy tinge that's almost in debt to Mose Allison or Ben Sidran – that kind of cool blend of many elements with younger ideas that was bubbling up on the Bay Area scene. Titles include "Dancin Wizard", "Monkeys On the Moon", "Sneaky Smith", and "Astronaut Food". LP, Vinyl record album

Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $29.99
Japanese reedman Mabumi Yamaguchi works here with tight combo recorded in the US – Kenny Kirkland on piano and keyboards, Miroslav Vitous on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – players that bring a nice sense of focus to the session, which seems to push his saxophone work even further than usual! Mabumi plays tenor and soprano sax – both with long lines that still pause for space in all the right places – and Kirkland's perhaps the musician who flavors the session the most, as he shifts between piano, Fender Rhodes, and Prophet – while Vitous adds in these soulfully warm basslines, and Williams balances between spacious sounds and more full attack on drums. A deep dive into the golden age of jazz in Belgium – that amazing postwar stretch when the nation was offering up some of the grooviest modern jazz on the continent – and also sharing a number of styles and players with the Parisian scene too! The package is nicely focused – and unlike some of the other many-artist 3CD sets on Fremeaux, this one focuses on work from a few core players – including the fantastic vibist Fats Sadi, alto saxophonist Jacques Pelzer, tenorist Jack Sels, tenor and flute player Bobby Jaspar, guitarist Rene Thomas, and harmonica wizard Toots Thielemans – each of whom get a good number of tracks apiece on the very long collection! We're most excited about the Fats Sadi material – but there's also rare gems from all of the others, mostly pulled from European-only LP and 45rpm releases. 62 tracks in all – and detailed notes in French and English! ✨✧ VariousWarfaring Strangers – Darkscorch Canticles ... CD
Numero, 1970s. New Copy ... $7.99 20.99
A really tremendous batch of dark-themed tunes from the American underground of the 70s – a treasure trove of under-discovered acts who were all inspired by the deeper brooding of the Led Zep and Black Sabbath generation! Unlike later manifestations from the indie scene, the work here isn't really heavy metal – and instead has this more complex approach – ready and able to spin out their own tales and stories in the space of a full length concept album, guided by their own unique myths and mysteries – even though most of these tracks only ever saw the light of day on 7" singles, as the bands mostly never got the chance to serve up a full-length set. Leave it to Numero to do a perfect job of bringing this underground together through their vivid notes and great images for the set – and no surprise, there's some occasional funky touches on a few of the tunes – especially on the drums. This is the kind of stuff the stoners in your high school wish they were hip enough to know about – and titles include "Warlord" by Wrath, "Twelve O'Clock Satanial" by Air, "Sealed In A Grave" by Triton Warrior, "Dark Days" by Space Rock, "Sweet Child" by Gorgon Medusa, "Cry For The Newborn" by Hellstorm, "Tasmania" by Stoned Mace, and "Seance" by Wizard. An expanded, remastered version of the album Prophecy – early work by Albert Ayler, recorded live in 1964 at the Cellar Cafe in New York, but not issued by ESP until years later, after his untimely early death. The performance is a trio outing – with Ayler's tenor alongside the bass of Gary Peacock and drums of Sunny Murray – all freely skirting around each other's space on the date, in a way that allows Ayler to take the bold lead with his sharp-toned solos, but which also allows for free interplay between the bass and percussion. Ayler's tone and wide swaths of sound are simply amazing – and titles include two variations on "Ghosts", plus "Spirits", "Prophecy", and "Wizard". ✨✧ Albert AylerSpiritual Unity (with bonus track) ... CD
ESP, 1964. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark recording – Albert Ayler's first album for the ESP label, and a record that hit the jazz world like a bullet! Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". 50th Anniversary Edition – also includes the bonus track "Vibrations". One of the darkest records to ever come out of the Chicago scene of the 70s – an unreleased gem from Medusa – a group who really know how to go head to head with some of the most frenetic acts of their generation! The set's got a blistering array of guitars right up front in the mix – brilliant solos that are very much in the metal mode, yet without all the posturing that usually comes along with such dexterity – a style that's often more content to hide behind the larger, darker trappings of the entire group! There's plenty of cuts on the set that would have set late night FM radio on fire at the time – plus a few more than would definitely have been too dangerous for the airwaves too – and Numero's done a wonderful job of resurrecting this lost nugget – giving it a lavish velvet-covered jacket, with the kind of presentation that no big record labels would have paid for at the time! Titles include "Strangulation", "Temptress", "Feelings Of Indifference", "Black Wizard", "Frustration's Fool", and "Unknown Fear". LP, Vinyl record album

Decca, 1970. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing moment from The Who – and from the UK rock scene in general – as Tommy is one of the most fully-conceived concept albums ever recorded – a masterful effort that's still pretty hard to match all these many years later! Pete Townshend really knocked it out of the park with this one – and pushed the group way way past the simpler songs the were recording just a year before – into this deeply introspective territory, spun out both in the album's words and music. The Tommy tale's been well told many times over the years – so we won't bother with the full narrative – but just let us say that it's hard to go wrong with this one, an essential item in any collection of adventurous rock – classic or otherwise. Titles include "The Acid Queen", "It's A Boy", "Sally Simpson", "Miracle Cure", "Pinball Wizard", "Do You Think It's Alright", "Cousin Kevin", "Christmas", "Tommy's Holiday Camp", "I'm Free", and "We're Not Gonna Take It". Blue Note, 1964. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The pinnacle of Blue Note's "new thing" era! This amazing album was led by drummer Tony Williams (then just a wee lad, playing with Miles Davis, in his legendary 60s quintet) – but it's more of a "roundtable" session that features equal contributions by some of Blue Note's best avant garde players from the time, all of them young firey geniuses like Williams. The configurations of the players change drastically from track to track – and some feature Sam Rivers, Richard Davis, and Gary Peacock playing in a 2-bass and tenor lineup with Williams; others feature Bobby Hutcherson and Herbie Hancock playing heavily percussive vibes and piano solos next to Williams' assorted percussion playing; and one track doesn't even feature Williams at all, but has Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter in a beautifully moody bass and piano duet! The record is a treasure – and it's a landmark recording that's probably one of the greatest that Blue Note (or any other label) released during the 60s! The album follows in a tradition that includes Tim Buckley, Tim Hardin, Leonard Cohen, and Fred Neil – but it's also got a really unique style that's the unique province of Tom Rapp – the main force behind the group, and the voice on all of the tunes. Rapp's vision was quite unique for the time – not nearly as revolutionary or personally preoccupied – more sad at the fading world, and granted with a unique ability to paint any subject in shades of blue. Side one features the very extended "Photophonie" – done for a photographic exhibition, and with a sound that's in the noisier, more striking side of the electronic spectrum at the start – then moves into these moodier, more open passages that have voices that slip in and out of the mix – almost like these whispering demons in conversation. "Il Etati Une Fois" is another long piece – one that seems to take real joy in its mix of obscure electronic textures and more pointed tones – followed by the very short "Trans-Voices", which at 52 seconds is almost a compression of the ideas of "Photophonie". This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – easily one of Madlib's masterpieces, and pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Includes Monk Higgins' "Slim's Return" interpreted by Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such on cuts, "Donald Byrd's "Distant Land", "Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Bounce", Yesterday's New Quintet's adaptation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", Madlib Invazion's "Funky Blue Note", the Joe McDuphrey Experience take on Horace Silver's/Herbie Hancock's "Peace/Dolphin Dance" and lots more. ✨✧ VariousOnce Upon A Time At King Tubby's ... LP
Pressure Sounds (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Woah! Don't get caught in the crossfire! I Roy takes on Prince Jazzbo, and luckily for us, Tubby's not taking sides, cutting mad versions and heavy dubs as the two Dee Jays trade barbs, rhymes and witty rejoinders for a battle on wax that lasted quite a few rounds! This great set by Pressure Sounds not only documents the toasting, boasting and roasting fest that the two heavyweight mic wielders laid to wax across now sought-after 45s, it showcases Striker Lee's production talents and Tubby's well known dub wizardry. For the most part, rhythms are laid down by the Aggrovators, with a couple Jo Jo Hookim produced cuts by the Revolutionaries, but it's all fantastic material, and the set has great notes giving background on the whole battle. 15 tracks in all, including "Do You Love Me?" by Johnny Clarke, "Straight To Jazzbo's Head", "Padlock", "Jazzbo Have Fe Run" and "Straight To Derrick Morgan's Head" by I Roy, "Straight To I Roy's Head" and "Gal Boy I Roy" by Prince Jazzbo, "I Roy The Chiney Commer Around" by Derrick Morgan, and "Straight To I Roy's Big Mouth" and "The Roots Of Dub" by King Tubby & The Aggrovators. ✨✧ Miles DavisComplete Jack Johnson (5 CD longbox edition) ... CD
Sony, 1971. Used 5CDs ... Out Of Stock
5 discs of Jack Johnson! Probably more Jack Johnson than most people could take, but for the few out there, like us, who can never get enough electric Miles (kind of like some of Miles own favorite diversions from that period) this box is a dream come true! Unlike the later live sides, the grooves here are pretty sparse, with a wide open approach that would later get replaced by frenzied multi-linear soloing, but still with the loose energy and funked up rhythms that would mark Miles work during the early 70s. Like the Bitches Brew and In A Silent Way boxes, this set really highlights Teo Macero's tape wizardry, when you compare the raw takes, of which most numbers get represented here in 3, 4 or 5 versions, to the edited versions that were finally released. If you want to utilize ye' olde program feature on your stereo, you can can arrange several different versions of the complete album, which is a pretty fantastic feature for obsessives such as ourselves! With "Willie Nelson", "Johnny Bratton", "Go Ahead John", "Duran", "Sugar Ray", "Right Off", "Yesternow", "Honky Tonk", "Ali", "Konda", "Nem Um Talvez", "Little High People", "Little Church" and "The Mask". CD
(NOTE: this set is missing the booklet, in addition Discs 4 & 5 have some marks that don't affect play. Priced accordingly.)

A huge run of music from the duo of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme – working here in their post-10cc years, at a time when they were becoming even greater geniuses in the studio! The music begins with all the wit and wizardry of the music from their early famous group – then moves off into an incredible array of unusual, offbeat, and aurally-compelling modes – really able to completely enchant the ears, but also served up a catchy tune at all the right places! The box set features detailed notes from both Godley and Creme – taking you through a musical journey that includes the albums L, Freeze Frame, Ismism, Birds Of Prey, History Mix Part 1, and Goodbye Blue Sky – plus lots of bonus tracks too! ✨✧ Jon AppletonWorld Music Theater Of Jon Appleton ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Mindblowing music from the mighty Jon Appleton – a cool combination of tape effects, electronics, and studio wizardry – every bit as wonderful as his Syntonic Menagerie album for Flying Dutchman! The sound here is quite similar – a playful pastiche of odd sounds, tones, and other elements – fitted together with a lot more imagination than some of Jon's contemporaries – never too stuffy or academic, and almost with a sensibility that predicts remix work in the decade to come. Two tracks on the set – "Chef D'Oeuvre" and "Times Square Times Ten" – were on the Flying Dutchman album, but all the others appear to be unique – and titles include "Hommage To Orpheus", "Ofa Atu Tonga", "Nevsehir", "Apolliana", "Sones De San Blas", and "CCCP". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

✨✧ Fat Jon The Ample Soul PhysicianWave Motion (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Young Heavy Souls, 2002. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An early classic solo jam from Fat Jon – one of our favorite underground hip hop beat wizards in the immediate post millennium – and a more than ample effort that still sounds great today! Combining his Dyslexic and Stasis EPs, it features a trademark batch Fat Jon's chilled out hip hop excursions into the realm of jazzy tone science. The beats here are fairly straight forward and snap nicely to keep it in head nodding territory, but his signature atmospheric production style is still floating nicely over the filtered basslines and crisp drum loops. Includes "Where?", "Feel The Void", "Visual Music", "For Stress", 'Wet Secrets", "Automated Life Machines" and "Surrection". 2019 version includes a couple extra tracks: "Trust You" and "Rain Dance Instrumental". LP, Vinyl record album
(Purple colored vinyl pressing.)
