Wire, 2021. New Copy ... $10.99
That's Warren Ellis on the cover, and the issue features a nice article on his work with Nick Cave, Marianne Faithfull, and others – although the main draw for us is a great look at the early years of Don Cherry in Watts – back when he was a key part of the LA underground, in a detailed article accompanied by some great vintage photos! The issue also has a feature on Angolan producer Nazar, plus singer Nakui Krishnamurthy, composer Ann Rosen, and the great Japanese saxophonist Kohsuke Mine. There's lots more too – including a nice piece by Val Wilmer, William Parker on Ornette Coleman at the Golden Circle, and Mike Paradinas and Lara Rix Martin on the Invisible Jukebox! A pretty astonishing creative leap for Wire – a record that still holds all the short, sharp, energy of their Pink Flag debut – but which also opens up the group to all these weird elements they'd explore in later years and solo work too! The record is almost the group's equivalent of work by Swell Maps – still very punk in construction, but already getting experimental too – a mix that instantly set the group apart, and has kept them in territory that nobody else has ever been able to touch. Titles include "Heartbeat", "Practice Makes Perfect", "Being Sucked In Again", "I Am The Fly", "Outdoor Miner", "Sand In My Joints", "I Feel Mysterious Today", "Marooned", "French Film Blurred", "Mercy" and more. EMI/Pink Flag, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of greatest of all British punk era records – released in '77 and one that transcends mid-to-late 70s punk cultural baggage better than just about any other – a real benchmark! Wire kept it short and sweet on Pink Flag – with 21 tracks in about 35 minutes – and it's as artful as it is succinct. They'd prove to be as creatively ambitious as any of their peers and the brevity Pink Flag would soon make way for experimental flourishes that are ultimately just as important and influential, but this still might be their best. Includes "Reuters", "Field Day For The Sundays", "Three Girl Rumba", "Ex Lion Tamer", "The Commercial", "Strange", "Different To Me", "12 X U", "Start To Move", "Lowdown", "Surgeon's Girl", "Pink Flag" and more. Plenty of blues power here – a searing live set recorded by Albert King before a very enthusiastic crowd at the Fillmore in the late 60s! The album's filled with lots of King's sharp-edged guitar lines – searing with a bit more soul than your usual bluesman, possibly in part because the backing group's so tight! At times, there's almost a bit of funk in the mix – given that the rhythm section romps it up pretty strongly – and the record stands nicely apart from some of the blues cliches that were creeping into the mix at the time. Titles include the 10 minute workout "Blues Power" – plus "Watermelon Man", "Night Stomp", "Blues At Sunrise", "Please Love Me", and "Look Out". CD

Warner, Mid/Late 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Prime period B-Sides, live recordings and other rarities from The Jesus & Mary Chain – great stuff from the first 5 or 6 years of their career – creatively up there with their best work ever! As dark-edged as the band is, they've often worn their influences on their sleeves over the years, be it the proto rock rawness of Bo Diddley, the catchy vocal style of early Beach Boys (though layered in razor wire) or the moody freneticism of Can – and they're all the more open with them on this collection, while still sounding like quintessential JMC. Classic! Includes "Kill Surf City", "Surfin' USA", "Upside Down", "Swing (Darklands Outtake)", "Just Out Of Reach", "Head", "Cracked", "Here It Comes Again", "Bo Diddley Is Jesus", "Rider", "Don't Ever Change", "Sidewalking", "Who Do You Love" and more. One of those records that maybe snuck in a bit under the wire at the time of release – but a set that instantly went on to become a classic, and one of the greatest debuts of the early 90s! Not only is the production great – full of sophisticated samples and ways of putting them together that set a whole new standard for a generation – but Brand Nubian also found a way to take some of the energy of the Native Tongues' freshness, and turn it towards more serious themes – but all without the heavy-handedness that made some of their contemporaries date quickly. Hats off to Grand Puba, Sadat X, and Lord Jamar for such a great job right from the start – on titles that include "All For One", "Slow Down", "Drop The Bomb", "Concerto In X Minor", and 2 mixes of "Wake Up" (Stimulated Dummies mix and the penultimate reprise) – plus "Who Can Get Busy Like This Man", "Ragtime", "To The Right", "Dance To My Ministry", "Step To The Rear", "Try To Do Me", and "Dedication". ✨✧ Johnny CashAmerican Recordings ... CD
American, 1994. Used ... $2.99
Johnny Cash's first record for Rick Rubin's American Recordings label – and a late career reviving masterpiece for the great, distinctly American legend. Rubin's genius idea for Johnny Cash was to strip the sound to it's barest essence, and let Cash's deep, bass-vibrating baritone voice bring genuine, authoritative soul to a great batch of handpicked songs. Recorded for the most part in Cash's own Tennessee cabin, and backed by just acoustic guitar, Cash brings a soulful depth to seeming oddball covers and his own great songs alike. Titles include "The Man Who Couldn't Cry", "The Beast In Me", "Oh, Bury Me Not", "Bird On A Wire", "Tennessee Stud", "Like A Soldier", "Redemption", and "Delia's Gone". CD

A double-disc set that documents the live efforts of the Free Music Ensemble – a power trio featuring Ken Vandermark on reeds, Nat McBride on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums! The style here is very much in the legacy of Vandermark's trio work of years past, especially in association with Scandinavian players – a mix of searingly intense numbers and other more introspective ones – often performances that are focused strongly around sound textures. One CD here features a 2005 Boston show, and the other includes a concert the next day, recorded up in Montreal (some travel schedule there!). Stones Throw, 2013. Near Mint- 7 x 7 Inch ... $29.99
Dubby funk with plenty of Jamaican undertones, but not exactly a reggae set – and instead the sort of wonderful criss-crossing of modes we've come to expect from The Lions! The group definitely owes a lot to the sound of 60s and 70s Kingston – yet their approach is different, too – a bit sharper and maybe more soul-based than the usual reggae group – in ways that belie some of the deep funk associations of the group members! Yet from a reggae perspective, the set's right on the money too – played at a level that easily rivals the Studio One sound back in the day, yet served up with production that's even sharper overall – thanks to work by Connie Price in the studio. Titles include "Birds On A Wire", "This Generation", "Picture On The Wall", "New Girl", "Pieces Of A Man", "Let's Go Out Tonight", and "Be Easy". 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Peter GabrielPeter Gabriel 3 – Melt ... LP
Mercury, 1980. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Peter Gabriel at the top of his solo game – tight, focused, and coming across with a nice sort of edge – one that really sits nicely in the same late 70s generation that includes Bowie in Berlin, early Talking Heads, and some of the darker-minded work on the left side of the mainstream at the time! The guitars have a nice edge, but never dominate – and Gabriel's vocals are totally great – soaring with majesty, but never overblown, and deeply personal in all the right spots – but without any fake soul modes. Instrumentation is right on the money – processed nicely, but never overproduced – and hell, players on the album even include Brit jazz legend Dick Morrisey on a handful of tracks! Pressure Sounds (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The striking debut album from one of the architects of reggae, a musician who cut precious few solo records in his lengthy tenure as the godfather of Jamaican music! A key figure behind the careers of reggae's mega stars like Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, Higgs issued few albums and singles under his own name, but this stellar first album showcases his talent beautifully, with spare, but rich renderings of his soulful approach to roots! Guitar ringer Eric Gale was brought in from the States to accompany Higgs alongside the stellar Now Generation band featuring Earl Wire Lindo, Mikey and Geoffrey Chung and Mickey Boo Richards, but Higgs production and arrangements keep things stripped down and true to the Kingston rootical vibe, rather than jazzing up the proceedings. 10 tracks in all, including "Come On Home", "Got To Make A Way", "Wake Up & Live", "Life Of Contradiction", "Who Brought Down The Curtains", 'Hard Times Don't Bother Me", "My Baby Still Loves Me" and "Song My Enemy Sings". We never get tired of this stuff!! Yet more proof that the King Tubby/Bunny Lee/Aggrovators combination was a potent one. 16 mid-to-late 70s rhythms produced by Striker Lee, then taken over to Tubby's, where the King or one of his disciples (Prince Phillip Smart or Prince Jammy in this case) worked his magic at the mixing console, serving up radically revised takes on the rhythms that were tearing up the dancehalls. Sure we've said this before, but there's some truly essential music on here, and like the other Blood & Fire reissues, this compilation stands out from the pack with it's great detailed notes and nice choice of sought after cuts, including "Tubby Get Smart", "Dub Investigation", "Thunder Rock" & "Bag A Wire Dub". One of the best-remembered Richard Thompson moments of the 80s – and a set that's also a bittersweet farewell to his years with Linda Thompson too! The album may well be the Rumors of the folk rock scene – but it's also got a quality that's more personal and pointed, too – songs that really show a lot of evolution in the style of not just the Thompsons, but also the production talents of Joe Boyd – who manages to make the music sound surprisingly biting for the time – really shaking off the trappings of early 70s British folk rock, but without losing any of its depth. ✨✧ Billy Joe ShaverHonky Tonk Heroes (When I Get My Wings/Gypsy Boy/bonus tracks) ... CD
Capricorn/Bear Family (Germany), Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
You've heard plenty about Billy Joe Shaver over the years, and this is the place to start – a set that brings together two of his albums for Capricorn Records, plus a single for MGM too! First up is When I Get Wings – a fantastic early album from Billy Joe Shaver – the kind of set that came out a bit under the wire, but turned on an elite few to one of the greatest songwriters in contemporary country music! The set's got maybe a bit more force than Billy's debut on Monument, but still also retains plenty of that broken-down quality that maybe didn't fit Shaver's age, but which definitely came through in the subjects of his songs – a similar voice to that of Kris Kristofferson on his early material, but definitely Billy Joe's own. Production is very strongly in the Capricorn Records mode, and titles include "Ride Me Down Easy", "Woman Is The Wonder Of The World", "Texas Uphere Tennessee", "The Good Lord Knows I've Tried", and "When I Get My wings". Gypsy Boy is a record with a title and cover that maybe look a bit off-key for the legend of Billy Joe Shaver – but the sound within is prime material from the 70s country genius, all given a tight spin in the Capricorn Records blend of rock and twang, roots, and polish! Billy Joe is maybe echoing some of the country music changes he helped to usher in with his songs a few years before – but the set is still great proof that the originator did them better than anyone else – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Chicken On The Ground", "Honky Tonk Heroes", "Billy B Damned", "We Stayed Too Long At The Fair", "Silver Wings Of Time", and "Slow Rollin Low". CD also features the obscure single tracks "Lately I've Been Leaning Towards The Blues", "I Couldn't Be Me Without You", and "Music City USA". CD

The third album from the great Buzzcocks – one of the most fiercely melodic bands of the punk era, and one of the best bands for tuneful, yet barbed songwriting of the late 70s, period! Different Kind Of Tension is a pretty accurate title for this set, the last of the first wave of the group's career, with weird electronic flourishes and artier sounds to be found than the furiously straightforward previous couple of records. It's not as radical of a change of pace as, say, Wire's progress from the first to third albums, but a different kind of tension, as they say. ✨✧ VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! CD

Brand New HeaviesTBNH ... CD
Acid Jazz (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Excellent work from The Brand New Heavies – one of those groups that made us first want to get into the record store business many years ago! The passage of time hasn't dimmed their genius at all – and right as at the start, the music here is flowing with classic funk and soul influences, but leaned up into a groove that's very contemporary – and which continues to stand head and shoulders above the generations of artists who've been inspired by their sound! As you might notice by the cover, the core duo of Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy are the key force of the sound – but their longtime partner N'Dea Davenport is on vocals for many tracks on the set – replaced at a few points by guests who include Laville, Angie Stone, Angela Ricci, Beverley Knight, and Siedah Garrett – a nicely shifting lineup that almost give the record the variety of a classic Incognito set. Titles include "Stupid Love", "Just Believe In You", "Get On The Right Side", "Little Dancer", "It's My Destiny", "Getaway", "Beautiful", "Wired Up", "Together", and "Dontchawanna". CD

✨✧ Raul De SouzaSweet Lucy ... CD
Capitol (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
Sweet Lucy, and mighty groovy – a wonderful album from Raul De Souza, cut during the height of his fame on the California scene! Like Raul's other work for Capitol, this record really sparkles from tight help from George Duke – who handles production, and some of the arrangements – and really helps De Souza find a tight jazzy groove! The instrumentation is a bit leaner than some of Raul's other records of this nature, which is a nice thing – as you get to hear plenty of keyboards from Patrice Rushen, Fender Rhodes from Dawilli Gonga, trumpet from Freddie Hubbard, and percussion from Airto. There's a bit of chorus vocals at times, but the main focus is on Raul's trombone solos – and cuts include of Joao Donato's "Banana Tree", plus "Sweet Lucy", "New Love", "Wild & Shy", "Bottom Heat", "Wires", and "At Will". CD
This title is scheduled for release about Wednesday, July 21.

New Jersey KingsUzi Lover ... CD
JTI (UK), 2002. Used ... $14.99
Funky organ grooves from UK Hammond maestro James Taylor – operating under the name of the New Jersey Kings! As funky collectors will know, the NJK were a group that Taylor used back in the early 90s – when his main group were going for a smoother soulful style, and Taylor wanted to record in the harder funkier mode of his earlier years. Now that James is back to the organ instrumental sound of his roots on his own LPs, the New Jersey Kings name is perhaps not as important – but as fans of the group's earlier work will know, the NJK have a heavy groove that's well worth reviving! The tracks on the set mix Hammond organ solos with lots of funked up guitar (played by brother David Taylor), bass, drums, and a bit of sax and flute – and the tracks on the set should more than give you an idea of the feel of the record, with names like "Knuckle Down", "Uzi Lover", "Bad Cookies", "Hot Wired", "The Money Shot", "Give Me Wood", and "Lost On The Bowery". Boddhi Satva18 ... CD
BBE (UK), 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 18.99
A double-length collection of work from Boddhi Satva – a retrospective of sorts, as the package features tracks from the past 20 years of his career – but maybe more of a special celebration of his talents, as the album brings together special projects, collaborations, and under-exposed mixes and tracks! As with all Boddhi Satva's music, there's a quality here that matches his African roots and role in the contemporary global scene – music that resonates strongly with the vibe of key collaborators on the package – who, with Boddhi Satva, have helped forge a new sense of cross-cultural growth in house music that will continue for years to come. Titles include "Manda Island" by Afefe Iku, "See The Day" by Alton Miller & Boddhi Satva, "Until Our Work It's Done (Boddhi Satva's ancestral rmx)" by Gabriele Poso, "Born Again (Boddhi Satva & Mr V retouch)" by V, ""Moina Ya Mokili" by Boddhi Satva & Abel Tabu, "Into The Shadows (Boddhi Satva ancestral soul rmx)" by Jay Tripwire, "Mama Kosa" by Boddhi Satva & Kaysha, "Kanga Mutu" by Boddhi Satva & Spilulu with H-Baraka, "Sweet Brown Sugar" by Boddhi Satva with E-Man, "The Depth Of The Source" by Boddhi Satva featuring Yuba, "Belma Belma" by Boddhi Satva & Maalem Hammam, "God Is Love (Boddhi Satva ancestral soul mix)" by DJ Pippi vs Danny Marquez with Marcel, and "Bria's Offering" and "Big Theme" by Boddhi Satva himself. VariousATA Records – The Library Archive Vol 1 ... CD
ATA (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
Not a standard sound library record, but one that's every bit as funky – thanks to a great ear for the right sort of 70s grooves from the folks at ATA Records! The music is contemporary, from the label that's been giving us some great funky 45s over the years – but the package has all the look and feel of a rare UK sound library record from decades back – and a sound that definitely matches that vibe too! These aren't fake funk tunes, or simple remix numbers that try to sound retro – they're just the sort of instrumental grooves you'd hear from Alan Hawkshaw, John Cameron, or other UK sound library giants – served up here by a nameless array of musicians, on great tracks that include "The Needle Nose", "Whack Slap & Blow", "Kaye Okay", "Wiretap", "Siren Sea", "Planet Nine", "Midnight Heist", "Nuclear Wind 1", and "Wigged Out". VariousLofts & Garages – Spring Records & The Birth Of Dance Music ... LP
Spring/BGP (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $24.99 26.99
A great slice of work from the New York underground of the post-disco years – served up by a family of labels that had been making things happen through most of the 70s! The set focuses strongly on the singles issued by the Posse and Spring Records labels – the former a new offshoot of the latter, especially geared towards 12" singles that were strongly focused on both the new sounds of the clubs and the streets – including lots of electro, bass-heavy funk, hip hop-inspired grooves, and mabye even some elements that would soon point the way towards house music to come! This side of the Spring Records label has never been covered in detail like this before – and the choice of cuts is as great as the notes on the music – which finally gives the Posse singles their due in the scene from back in the day. Titles include "We Come To Jam" by Blaze, "Sing A Song" by Lonnie Youngblood, "Have Your Cake" by Body, "Wired For Games (long version)" by C Brand, "Workin Out" by Ritz, "Live It Up (short vocal)" by Fonda Rae, "Get Up An Dance" by Mynk, "Spread Love" by Fatback, "Let's Get Nice (7" vocal)" by Glory, and "Got To Have Your Lovin (short vocal)" by Feel.
