✨✧ WirePink Flag ... CD
Restless Retro, 1977. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of greatest of all British punk era records – released in '77 and one that transcends mid-to-late 70s punk cultural baggage better than just about any other – a real benchmark! Wire kept it short and sweet on Pink Flag – with 21 tracks in about 35 minutes – and it's as artful as it is succinct. They'd prove to be as creatively ambitious as any of their peers and the brevity Pink Flag would soon make way for experimental flourishes that are ultimately just as important and influential, but this still might be their best. Includes "Reuters", "Field Day For The Sundays", "Three Girl Rumba", "Ex Lion Tamer", "The Commercial", "Strange", "Different To Me", "12 X U", "Start To Move", "Lowdown", "Surgeon's Girl", "Pink Flag" and more. The issue also looks at the work of guitarist John Russell's Mopomoso, the work of Armand Hammer and Backwoodz Studio, experimental vocalist Nour Mobarak, Brazilian singer Thiago Nassif, and the improvised guitar of Wendy Eisenberg. BuzzcocksDifferent Kind Of Tension ... CD
Liberty/Domino, 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
The third album from the great Buzzcocks – one of the most fiercely melodic bands of the punk era, and one of the best bands for tuneful, yet barbed songwriting of the late 70s, period! Different Kind Of Tension is a pretty accurate title for this set, the last of the first wave of the group's career, with weird electronic flourishes and artier sounds to be found than the furiously straightforward previous couple of records. It's not as radical of a change of pace as, say, Wire's progress from the first to third albums, but a different kind of tension, as they say. Titles include "Mad Mad Judy", "You Say You Don't Love Me", "Hollow Inside", "I Believe", "Radio Nine", "Paradise", "Sitting Round At Home", and "I Don't Know What To Do With My Life". CD

Johnny CashAmerican Recordings ... CD
American, 1994. Used ... $4.99
Johnny Cash's first record for Rick Rubin's American Recordings label – and a late career reviving masterpiece for the great, distinctly American legend. Rubin's genius idea for Johnny Cash was to strip the sound to it's barest essence, and let Cash's deep, bass-vibrating baritone voice bring genuine, authoritative soul to a great batch of handpicked songs. Recorded for the most part in Cash's own Tennessee cabin, and backed by just acoustic guitar, Cash brings a soulful depth to seeming oddball covers and his own great songs alike. Titles include "The Man Who Couldn't Cry", "The Beast In Me", "Oh, Bury Me Not", "Bird On A Wire", "Tennessee Stud", "Like A Soldier", "Redemption", and "Delia's Gone". CD

CodeineBarely Real (2LP & CD set) ... LP
Sub Pop/Numero, 1992. New Copy 2LP & CD (reissue)... $12.99 24.99
The second of three hugely influential releases for Codeine – '92's Barely Real – a vital piece of a body of work that would have a very real impact on many bands to follow! The original Barely Real is either a generously portioned EP or a mini-LP – with 6 tracks that deliver on the promise of the preceding Frigid Stars LP – while also showing an evolving approach. The core trio of Chris Brokaw, John Engle and Stephen Immerwahr get an assist from Jon Fine on "Jr" – who lays down an additional wave of noisy guitar texture. David Grubbs contributes the solo piano and arrangement of the song "W." – a cool collaboration and a nice little creative side-step of Codeine's now-established sound! Numero's excellent double vinyl version features the original album on one LP and a full LP of bonus material! Titles include "Realize", "Jr", "Barely Real", "Hard To Find", "W." and "Promise Of Love". Bonus tracks include "Jr (Demo)", "Tom (Demo)", "Wird (Demo)", "I Wonder (Demo)", "Hydroplane", "A L'Ombre De Nous", "Realize (Demo)" and "Broken-Hearted Wire". All tracks restored from the original masters, the vinyl comes in a high quality gatefold sleeve, with an insert booklet of with notes/essays by esteemed admirers. Also includes the full tracklist on CD. LP, Vinyl record album

Dennis CoffeyFinger Lickin' Good ... LP
Westbound, 1975. Very Good ... $33.99
Certainly not one of Dennis total classics – but with some nice moments of funky guitar that make the record worth having. Coffey's playing is great, as usual, and it's set here amidst some larger electric arrangements that have a nice mid 70s groove to them. You won't find the killer sharp-edged sound of the first two albums, but you'll still get some good grooves, all touched by Coffey's mad approach to the guitar. Titles include "Finger Lickin Good", "I've Got A Real Good Feeling", "Fame", "Live Wire", and "Wild Child". LP, Vinyl record album

Late 80s garage-psych-punk from Dead Moon – their first album ever and a record that fuses decades of trashy rock into a unique frenzy that's beloved to the privileged and relative few who know it and love it! It's important to consider what underground music sounded like in the late 80s in general to fully appreciate the prescience of Dead Moon and the past history of the players – who are more akin the late 60s TX psych than most things bubbling under the surface in the 80s. Al GreenBack Up Train ... CD
BMG/Camden (UK), Late 60s. Used ... $8.99
Al Green's first LP – with a very different feel than his later work on Hi! The record's got a harder southern soul groove – almost in a Wilson Pickett/Arthur Conley mode, but with some sweeter elements in the backing. Al's voice is still incredible, although different than later, in that he's singing with a really open vibe, letting himself go a bit more, and not keeping in that smooth sophisticated mode of later years. Originally released by the tiny Hot Line label, and issued later by Bell Records when Al started to hit big with Hi Records during the early 70s. Titles include "Back Up Train", "Get Yourself Together", "Don't Leave Me", "Let Me Help You", "Hot Wire", and "Stop & Check Myself". CD

✨✧ Charles MingusRight Now – Live At The Jazz Workshop ... CD
Debut/OJC, 1964. Used ... $10.99
Charles Mingus caught live is a totally different experience from Mingus in the studio – as this crack album from 1964 will testify! The album features a stripped-down quartet that includes Clifford Jordan on tenor, Jane Getz on piano, and Dannie Richmond on drums – plus a guest appearance by altoist John Handy on one of the album's two tracks. Although you'll recognize the titles – "New Fables" and "Meditations (For A Pair Of Wire Cutters)" – as two of Mingus' more famous compositions, the versions here are extremely long (over 20 minutes), and show the less-composed side of Mingus' playing – one in which he allowed soloists to have much freer rein than usual, and really stretch out with their sound! Jordan and Handy take more than ample use of this space, and wail away mightily in some of their best recorded work from the time. Nice stuff, and one of the best mid-60's Mingus albums! CD

✨✧ UnkleNever Never Land (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
GU (UK), 2003. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
James Lavelle's Unkle takes another sharp turn with Never Never Land – a pretty atmospheric batch of longish, tripnotic and moody Brit electronic club soul. Much of the album has the same slow-building structure as the "Eye For An Eye" single – light strings and/or synths, and hollow distant percussive parts gets the ball rolling, before the loose vocals carry the tune into a massive, club-pounding chorus. It's definitely not the UNKLE of Psyence Fiction, in which DJ Shadow steered the sounds all over the map. It's a very streamlined, very mood-rock learned formula this time around, and the result comes out as a really menacing mix of a langourous, Talk Talk kind of groove, a less lumbering version of later electronic Wire, and some of the darker club sounds of recent years. Guests this time out include Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, Eno, Massive Attack's Robert del Naja and others. Tracks include "Back And Forth", "Eye For An Eye", "In A State", "I Need Something Stronger", "Panic Attack", "Invasion", "Glow", "Inside" "What Are You To Me?" and more. CD

Ace (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Seminal spy sounds from the 60s – a treasure trove of spy-themed tunes, and one that features loads of material you might not hear otherwise! The set doesn't feature the big hits from the James Bond films, and instead includes all the great little records that sprung up in the wake of those movies – cool jazz, vocal, and instrumental records that sometimes feature weird reworkings of more famous soundtrack numbers, sometimes lesser-known cuts from b-grade films, and sometimes fresh new spy numbers on their own! The style ranges from groovy guitar numbers to blaring jazzy tracks to slinky steppers that find a very cool balance between suspense and swing. Titles include "Dr Goldfoot & The Bikini Machine" by The Supremes, "The Last Of The Secret Agents" by Nancy Sinatra, "Theme From Danger Man" by Red Price, "A Man Alone" by John Barry, "Deadlier Than The Male" by The Walker Brothers, "Burke's Law" by Wynton Kelly, "We Should've" by Cleo Laine, "Our Man Flint" by Billy Strange, "Theme From Where The Spies Are" by Jimmy Smith, "The Liquidator" by Shirley Bassey, "I Spy" by Roland Shaw, "Come Spy With Me" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, and "High Wire" by Brian Fahey. Treasure Isle/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A record that's brimming over with pride for the new musical grooves coming out of Kingston – and a rare compilation on the legendary Treasure Isle record from producer Duke Reid! The tunes here are great and gritty – almost as if Reid was finding a way to capture the energy of a sound system in the studio – with lots of booming beats, rumbling basslines, and the kind of standout instrumental and vocal passages that give each tune a special sort of hook! The instrumentals are maybe the most compelling – as they'll use a spare organ line or sax solo to craft surprisingly hypnotic sounds – which are then balanced out strongly by the soulful vocals on the other cuts. Titles include "Boom Shaka Lacka" by Hopeton Lewis & The Chosen Few, "Wake The Town" by U Roy, "Hopeful Village" by The Tennors, "The Ball" by Earl Wire Lindo, "What Does It Take" by Alton Ellis, "Sunday Gravy" by Earl Wire Lindo, "Condition Bad A Yard" by The Ethiopians, "Rule The Nation" by U Roy, "Dynamite" by Tommy McCook, and "White Rum" by Earl Wire Lindo. 2CD set has an insane amount of bonus tracks – 28 more Duke Reid productions, and 17 more produced by Byron Smith – 45 more tracks, including work by King Sporty, Tommy McCook, The Barons, Winston Jarrett, Nora Dean, The Ethiopians, Hopeton Lewis, Alston Barrett, The El Dorados, Dorothy Reid, and many more. The group is great – with Graham Haynes on cornet, Mark Shim on tenor, Steve Lehman on alto, Stephan Crump on bass, and Tyshawn Sorey on drums – and in addition to boldly-phrased work on acoustic piano, Iyer also plays some Fender Rhodes – used in more spacious ways that are extremely beautiful, and which we find far more soulful than some of his more abstract use of electronics! Martha and the girls' entry into Motown's well-done series of 70s multi-LP collections – this one only a double-length set, but still filled with plenty of great bits by the group! The set features a solid decade's worth of work – material from the trio's 1962 start at Motown, up to some of their even better albums for the label in the early 70s. Titles include "Bless You", "Honey Love", "Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things", "My Baby Loves Me", "Honey Chile", "Jimmy Mack", "I Promise To Wait My Love", "Benjamin", "Tear It On Down", "In & Out Of My Life", "Live Wire", "Wild One", "Motoring", "Nowhere To Run", "Quicksand", "Love Is Like A Heat Wave", and "I'll Have To Let Him Go". ✨✧ Billy Joe ShaverWhen I Get My Wings ... LP
Capricorn, 1976. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic early album from Billy Joe Shaver – the kind of set that came out a bit under the wire, but turned on an elite few to one of the greatest songwriters in contemporary country music! The set's got maybe a bit more force than Billy's debut on Monument, but still also retains plenty of that broken-down quality that maybe didn't fit Shaver's age, but which definitely came through in the subjects of his songs – a similar voice to that of Kris Kristofferson on his early material, but definitely Billy Joe's own. Production is very strongly in the Capricorn Records mode, and titles include "Ride Me Down Easy", "Woman Is The Wonder Of The World", "Texas Uphere Tennessee", "The Good Lord Knows I've Tried", and "When I Get My wings". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some ring & edge wear and is bent a bit near the spine.)

✨✧ Richard & Linda ThompsonShoot Out The Lights ... CD
Hannibal, 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the best-remembered Richard Thompson moments of the 80s – and a set that's also a bittersweet farewell to his years with Linda Thompson too! The album may well be the Rumors of the folk rock scene – but it's also got a quality that's more personal and pointed, too – songs that really show a lot of evolution in the style of not just the Thompsons, but also the production talents of Joe Boyd – who manages to make the music sound surprisingly biting for the time – really shaking off the trappings of early 70s British folk rock, but without losing any of its depth. Titles include "Don't Renege On Our Love", "Walking On A Wire", "Just The Motion", "Shoot Out The Lights", "Did She Jump Or Was She Pushed", and "Wall Of Death". CD

Treasure Isle/Music On Vinyl (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ VariousTotally Wired & Illicit Grooves – Acid Jazz – The Birth Of A Scene 1987 to 1990 ... CD
Acid Jazz/BGP (UK), Late 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous grooves from the earliest (and best) years of the acid jazz scene – all recorded at a time when London was exploding with sounds from the 60s and 70s, and turning out some of the hippest music on the planet! Although the term "acid jazz" was soon mishandled and mis-managed here in the US, the earliest days of the movement were really a tremendous time in London – a period when folks returned to the core elements that made funk, jazz, and soul great – and shook off all of the too-electric and too-stiff modes that had crept in during the 80s! Most of the work here is in a really spare, stripped-down funky mode – a cross between soul jazz of the 60s and blacksploitation funk of the 70s, with possibly a few more contemporary elements thrown into the mix. And in these years way before the current deep funk revival, what's even more important is the way these songs were produced – with a warmth that other groups hadn't had in years, and a real love of the way these tracks might have sounded in older studios a few decades before. The package contains a number of key rare singles from the Acid Jazz label, other album tracks, and even a few classics that had a big influence on the London scene. Titles include the rare pre-Acid Jazz single "Got To Give" by The Brand New Heavies, the sublime "Rejoice In Righteousness" by Bukky Leo Quintet, and the tracks "Cut & Run" by Lay Zee Muthas, "Like A Gun" by King Truman, "The Killer" by Night Trains, "People Get Ready" by The Brand New Heavies, "Haw Right Now" by Patrice Rushen, "Earthly Powers" by Man Called Adam, "Mr PC" by Snowboy, "Spinning Wheel" by New Jersey Kings, "Let The Good Times Roll" by The Quiet Boys, and "Mighty Mouse" by Caesar Frazier. Loads of great notes too – a really detailed look at the London scene at the end of the 80s! CD

Acid Jazz (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Excellent work from The Brand New Heavies – one of those groups that made us first want to get into the record store business many years ago! The passage of time hasn't dimmed their genius at all – and right as at the start, the music here is flowing with classic funk and soul influences, but leaned up into a groove that's very contemporary – and which continues to stand head and shoulders above the generations of artists who've been inspired by their sound! As you might notice by the cover, the core duo of Simon Bartholomew and Andrew Levy are the key force of the sound – but their longtime partner N'Dea Davenport is on vocals for many tracks on the set – replaced at a few points by guests who include Laville, Angie Stone, Angela Ricci, Beverley Knight, and Siedah Garrett – a nicely shifting lineup that almost give the record the variety of a classic Incognito set. Titles include "Stupid Love", "Just Believe In You", "Get On The Right Side", "Little Dancer", "It's My Destiny", "Getaway", "Beautiful", "Wired Up", "Together", and "Dontchawanna". CD

Kid & The First PeopleTiwerenge ... CD
Dakar Sound (Netherlands), 2005. Used ... $9.99
Jaunty Afropop grooves from Malawi! Although Kid Mkandawire was born in Zambia and since 1995 has lived in Denmark, he cut his musical teeth in Malawi, a tiny sliver of a country sandwiched by Zambia and Mozambique. Over the last two decades Congolese soukous and reggae have been popular imports, and you can certainly hear them in Kid's music, from the fluid, bubbling electric guitar lines to the occasional two-drop rhythms. But he's also tastefully absorbed some of the more contemporary flavors that have surrounded him in Europe, from the acoustic singer-songwriter-style ballad "Tiwerenge" to the subtle hip-hop flair of "Nthowa". Regardless of the setting, it's his voice that impressed us, a perfect measure of soul and grit. Tracks include "Mwana Muweme", "Paulina", "Wezulu", "Anya Moyo", and "Mwana Wa Africa". CD

Augustus PabloAugustus Pablo At King Tubby's (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Attack/Radiation Roots (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.99
Augustus Pablo at his trippy best – blowing the melodica over a host of sweet dubby rhythms all produced by Bunny Lee! In the hands of Pablo, the instrument seems like it was made to be used best in dub – as the "wind piano" has this sound that's as personal and mystical as the rhythms that give it support – blown by Agustus with this style that's very different from some of the more mainstream melodica modes – with a very improvisational approach, and a sound that expands and contracts in volume, depending on the lungpower used at each moment! Pablo's made plenty of great records in this mode, and this may well be one of the best – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Desire Dub", "Musical Pablo", "Barbwire Dub", "Maka", "Best Dub", "Foggy Pablo", "Rough Pablo", "A House Is Not A Dub", "Blind Dub", and "No Gesturing Pablo". CD also features two bonus tracks – "Ride Me Dub" and "Every Dub I Own". CD

A double-length collection of work from Boddhi Satva – a retrospective of sorts, as the package features tracks from the past 20 years of his career – but maybe more of a special celebration of his talents, as the album brings together special projects, collaborations, and under-exposed mixes and tracks! As with all Boddhi Satva's music, there's a quality here that matches his African roots and role in the contemporary global scene – music that resonates strongly with the vibe of key collaborators on the package – who, with Boddhi Satva, have helped forge a new sense of cross-cultural growth in house music that will continue for years to come. Titles include "Manda Island" by Afefe Iku, "See The Day" by Alton Miller & Boddhi Satva, "Until Our Work It's Done (Boddhi Satva's ancestral rmx)" by Gabriele Poso, "Born Again (Boddhi Satva & Mr V retouch)" by V, ""Moina Ya Mokili" by Boddhi Satva & Abel Tabu, "Into The Shadows (Boddhi Satva ancestral soul rmx)" by Jay Tripwire, "Mama Kosa" by Boddhi Satva & Kaysha, "Kanga Mutu" by Boddhi Satva & Spilulu with H-Baraka, "Sweet Brown Sugar" by Boddhi Satva with E-Man, "The Depth Of The Source" by Boddhi Satva featuring Yuba, "Belma Belma" by Boddhi Satva & Maalem Hammam, "God Is Love (Boddhi Satva ancestral soul mix)" by DJ Pippi vs Danny Marquez with Marcel, and "Bria's Offering" and "Big Theme" by Boddhi Satva himself. The music is contemporary, from the label that's been giving us some great funky 45s over the years – but the package has all the look and feel of a rare UK sound library record from decades back – and a sound that definitely matches that vibe too! These aren't fake funk tunes, or simple remix numbers that try to sound retro – they're just the sort of instrumental grooves you'd hear from Alan Hawkshaw, John Cameron, or other UK sound library giants – served up here by a nameless array of musicians, on great tracks that include "The Needle Nose", "Whack Slap & Blow", "Kaye Okay", "Wiretap", "Siren Sea", "Planet Nine", "Midnight Heist", "Nuclear Wind 1", and "Wigged Out". Fantastic early work from The Fall – some key singles issued by the Rough Trade label as 45s during the first few years of the group – already a great showcase for the mad wit of Mark E Smith! While we love the albums from this time, these singles are maybe the songs we go back to again and again – as they sometimes have surprisingly catchy hooks, even while maintaining an edge – and often resonate with that Smith sense of humor that sometimes takes a few listens to pick up on!
