Kenny BarronIMO Live ... CD
Why Not (Japan), 1982. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A really free-wheeling live album from Kenny Barron – cut originally as a Japanese-only session for the ultra-hip Why Not label, and done with a sound that's a bit different than some of his American work of the time! The group's a trio – with Buster Williams on bass and Ben Riley on drums – and Barron's got a hard fire right from the start – stretching out on a set of tracks that all go well past the 10 minute mark, with a free approach to grooving – one that really lets him find his own space, solo-wise, yet never get too flowery or ever fail to swing – thanks to the hipness of the rhythm section! Titles include "Manha Do Carnaval", "Rhythm A Ning", and "Someday My Prince Will Come". CD
(Out of print 2001 pressing, includes obi.)

✨✧ Chico FreemanMorning Prayer (with bonus track) ... CD
Why Not/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
Quite possibly our favorite album ever from Chico Freeman – a beautiful set that was originally issued only in Japan, and which has Chico hitting some of his strongest, most spiritual modes on record! The album features Freeman's reeds in the company of other Chicagoans – AACM players who include Henry Threadgill on saxes, Muhal Richard Abrams on piano, and Steve McCall on percussion – plus added work from Cecil McBee on bass and Ben Montgomery on drums – both players who round out the group with a very solid rhythmic focus. There's a bold sense of direction to this record that you don't always get in other work from Chico – a sound that's almost more Strata East at points, and which serves to bring the AACM players into sharp formation, and a strongly rhythmic orientation at times. The whole thing's wonderful – very well-crafted, and filled with spirit and soul – and titles include "The In Between", "Like The Kind Of Peace It Is", "Morning Prayer", "Pepe's Samba", and "Conversations". CD also features a bonus 19 minute version of "Pepe's Samba". CD

A seminal 70s set from the legendary Air trio – and one of their wonderful non-American dates from the early years – material recorded overseas, where this famous AACM trio was maybe getting more attention than in the US! The album was originally a Japanese-only album, and it's easily one of the group's greatest of the decade – a sublime set that really has them working strongly in their AACM roots, yet also reaching for a new sound too – a beautiful balance between jazz generations, carried off perfectly by the trio of Henry Threadgill on reeds, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Steve McCall on drums! Tracks are long, and extremely inventive – and titles include "Through A Keyhole Darkly", "Air Raid", and "Midnight Sun". CD

✨✧ Ted CursonBlue Piccolo ... CD
Why Not (Japan), 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest records ever cut by trumpeter Ted Curson – and that's saying a lot, because all his records are pretty darn hip! Curson's working in a quartet with Jim McNeely on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Steve McCall on drums – and the group's a lot tighter than some of Curson's other ones from the late 70s, grooving away with a slight nod to freedom, but also a hard jazz swing that never loses its drive. The vibe is great – soulful and soaring, but very focused too – and titles include "Dwacki Mun Fudalick", "Blue Piccolo", "Playhouse March", and "Song Of The Lonely". CD

✨✧ Walt DickersonWalt Dickerson 1976 ... CD
Why Not (Japan), 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare set from vibist Walt Dickerson – one of the most compelling jazz musicians to ever lay hold of a set of vibes! The album was originally issued as a Japanese-only session by the Why Not label in the mid 70s, and it features Dickerson playing on 5 tunes that have a slightly different feel than a lot of his other work from the time. First up is "Sky", which features some electric bass work by Jamaaladeen Tacuma, which makes for a more full-on sound than you usually get with Dickerson. Next up is "Awareness", an extremely haunting solo track that features this incredible tone on the vibes. The last three tunes feature a trio with Wilbur Ware on bass and Edgar Leon Bateman on drums – and Ware's bass work brings out a swing in Dickerson's vibes that we rarely ever hear. Titles include "Key Of Wisdom", "Yesterdays", and "I Love You". Essential work for any fan of this enigmatic vibist – and great to have back out again! CD

✨✧ Fumio KarashimaPiranha ... CD
Why Not (Japan), 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredibly soulful set of piano tracks – very much in the best tradition of work by George Cables or Joe Bonner, also recorded for the Why Not label at the same time. Japanese pianist Fumio Karashima is working here with drummer Jimmy Hopps and bassist Isao Suzuki – and Hopps' light, lyrical touch on the kit (a bit like Billy Higgins at his best) is a perfect foil for Karashima's stretched-out piano lines, darkly modal, with a searching soulful quality that's proof that the Why Not label was one of the best proponents of the post-Coltrane sound of the 70s! Titles include "Little Island", "Blue Three", "Piranha", and "Lament". CD

✨✧ Don PullenDon Pullen Plays Monk ... CD
Why Not (UK), 1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful stuff from one of the most soulful avant players of his generation! Pullen cut this rare set for the Why Not label during the mid 80s, and it's a wonderfully introspective session that has him paying homage to Monk on 4 classics ("Well You Needn't", "Round Midnight", "Trinkle Tinkle", and "In Walked Bud") plus 2 originals ("Monkin Around" and "Gratitude") which have a very Monkish feel. The angular lines of Monk are a nice juxtaposition with the warmer chords of Pullen's playing – and the whole set's recorded with that stunning fidelity you get from the Japanese piano sessions of the mid 70s. Plus, the CD reissue features 2 bonus alternate takes of "Gratitude" and "In Walked Bud". CD
(Still sealed with hype sticker!)

✨✧ Monty WatersBlack Cat ... CD
Why Not (Japan), 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the only records ever recorded as a leader by alto player Monty Waters – a hip New York altoist who's appeared on records with Joe Lee Wilson, but rarely got the chance to lead a group on his own. This Japanese-only set from 1975 features Waters working with a quartet that includes Ronnie Boykins on bass, George Avaloz on drums, and Yoshiaki Masuio on guitar – playing together in a mode that's almost a lyrical take on some of Ornette's harmelodic recordings from the same time, a style that we evoke mostly because of the way that the guitar comps in behind the rhythm in parts, letting Waters blow over the top in solo formation. At other times, the guitar's in a more tradition role – but the lack of a piano in the group means that there's still quite a bit of freedom, although the group always manages to swing soulfully. Titles include "Modesto", "The Black Cat", "RPM", "J Love March", and "Apt #2H". CD

✨✧ Joe Lee Wilson & Bond StreetShout For Trane + 1 ... CD
Why Not/Trio (Japan), 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the best Joe Lee Wilson album you can ever get! Joe Lee Wilson's got a spiritual jazz vocal style that's in the vein of Leon Thomas, but which often falls short of Thomas' greatness on other recordings – yet here, though, he's totally great – hitting a beautifully soulful vein that's totally righteous, and which really delivers on the promise you'll hear on his other records. The group's quite tight – the Bond Street combo, which includes Fielder Floyd on trumpet, Monty Waters on alto and soprano, and Shiroh Mori on guitar – and the session was released by the hard-to-find Why Not imprint of the Japanese label Trio, making it one of the more obscure records in Wilson's catalog. The set steps off with an amazing take on Billy Gault's "Mode For Trane" – and other titles include "Song For My Father", "One ", "Four", and "Sophisticated Lady". CD

A tremendous album from Air – recorded in their native Chicago, but one of the landmark 70s sessions on Japan's Why Not label! The trio is in wonderful formation here – very focused, with a sharpness that you don't always get in some of their other recordings – a perfect balance between the reeds of Henry Threadgill, bass of Fred Hopkins, and drums of Steve McCall! There's a tightness here that we really love – a bold sense of power that takes the AACM tradition, and fuses it with more of a 70s spiritual jazz approach at times – still experimental enough to live up to Air's reputation, but with occasional rhythmic elements that really push things forward. The album only features 4 tracks – but all of them are long, and stepped in soul – with titles that include "The Great Body Of The Riddle Or Where Where The Dodge Boys When My Clay Started To Slide", "Untitled Tango", and "Dance Of The Beast". Why Not (UK), 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most beautiful albums ever recorded by this legendary AACM pianist! The album was a rare Japanese-only session from 1975, but recorded in Chicago – and it features Muhal playing solo – in beautifully warm spiritual tones that are very different from his playing on many other albums from the time. The work is wonderfully introspective, showing a whole new side to Abrams' genius – the sensitive, contemplative keyboardist who occasionally emerges during some of Abrams' larger group sessions, but who usually gets pushed back in the fray of larger instrumental interplay. The whole album's extremely beautiful, and it's darn near impossible to find in the original! Tracks include "Afrisong", "The Infinitive Flow", "Hymn To The East", "Roots", and "The New People". CD

✨✧ Chico & Von FreemanLord Riff And Me ... CD
Why Not (Japan), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Chico's greatest recordings of the 80s – and a hip Japanese-only set that also features work from his father, Von Freeman! The set's a no-nonsense batch of tracks that bridges Chico's spiritual avant leanings and Von's roots in a Chicago hardbop tradition – and the rhythm group of George Cables, Cecil McBee, and Billy Hart is a perfect trio to accompany the styles of both players. The album's one of the few to really showcase Von's strengths as a writer, and his underrecorded ability to solo in a complicated modern style – something that's hardly ever captured on his other sessions from the 70s and 80s, which only ever feature him blowing straight long versions of standards. The set's a beautiful one – very similar to Sonny Fortune's recording for the Why Not label from the same time – and titles include "Sneakin Peakin", "Blue Baby Do", "Ballad For Aisha", "Vonce", "South Express", and "Moment's Notice". One of the few sessions ever cut as a leader by soul jazz trumpeter Charles Sullivan – a brilliant talent who shone brightly in the mid 70s, working in hip small groups that were very much in the Strata East mode. This rare Japanese-only set has Sullivan working with Rene McLean, Kenny Barron, Buster Williams, and Billy Hart – on a tightly crafted set of tunes that share the same lyrical searching quality as some of McLean or Barron's own work from the time. The compositions are incredibly soulful – very much in the mode of some of Billy Harper's genius Japanese recordings – and titles include "Re Entry", "Carefree", "Mabe's Way", and "Waltz For Cricket". A simply amazing session by pianist Joe Bonner – arguably his best ever! The album is one of a rare few that were cut for the Japanese Why Not label during the mid 70s, and like the others in the series, it features an American spiritual jazz player working far far past his usual mode. Bonner's in amazing form in a trio with Clint Houston and Billy Hart, and the tracks are filled with a fire and energy that you won't find on most of his American recordings from the time – as Bonner runs up and down the keys in a fury of passion, blending perfectly with Houston's deep soulful basslines, and Hart's dancing lyrical drums. Chris ConnorHe Loves Me, He Loves Me Not ... LP
Atlantic, 1956. Very Good+ ... $16.99
A fantastic cover, and some great music to match – a key early classic in Chris Connor's late 50s run for Atlantic Records! As on her debut for the label, Ralph Burns handles the arrangements here – in a mode that's somewhat modern, but never too academically so – with just the right pitch to create an additional sense of edge next to Connor's vocals, but never overwhelm them too much. There's a new sense of expression going on here – one that perfectly illustrates why Chris' approach was so different than some of the more emotive singers from years before. Tracks include "Why Can't I", "About The Blues", "Thursday's Child", "High On A Windy Hill", and "Round About". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Beach BoysThat's Why God Made The Radio ... CD
Capitol, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great comeback for The Beach Boys – working here with Brian Wilson at the production helm, in a mode that really recalls the glory of the group's post-Pet Sounds years! We'll be honest that we were initially cringing at the title – and expected the worst – but there's a compelling, charming quality here that comes not just from the group's well-crafted harmonies, or the sensitive and careful production – but also from the fact that these guys have aged a heck of a lot, and seem to bring a sense of humanity to the music they wouldn't have had before! It's almost like that early 20s moment when the Boys were starting to grow up and bringing a new sense of pain to their previous teen lyrics – but recast here in a post-middle age mode that's even more human and honest – yet somehow still served up with all the sweetness that's always made the group great! It's that mix of sweet sounds and bittersweet undercurrents that really makes the album shine – a balance that even Brian Wilson never managed to capture this well in some of his own solo projects over the past few decades. So our hat's off to the group (showing the same bald spot that most of them have too) – thanks for a nice album that includes the cuts "Shelter", "The Private Life Of Bill & Sue", "Think About The Days", "Isn't It The Time", "Pacific Coast Highway", "Summer's Gone", and "From There To Back Again". A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. Titles include the side-long "The Spiritual" – plus "Toro", "Lori Song", and "That The Evening Sky Fell Through the Glass Wall and We Stood Alone Somewhere?" That fuzzed out stomp of a sound is back in full effect, as are the titanic drums and an overall sound that uses an electric blues influence as a springboard into heavy cosmic space. Includes their ferocious cover of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" plus "Feathers From Your Tree", "Just A Little Bit", "Gypsy Ball", "Come And Get It", "The Hunter", "Babylon" and "Magnolia Caboose Babyfinger". Rocky BoydEase It – Introducing The Rocky Boyd Quintet ... CD
Jazztime/Blue Moon, 1961. Used ... $16.99
The only full album ever issued by tenor player Rocky Boyd – but a set so great, it's definitely made a name for him over the years! Boyd's got a wonderful tone on the set – sharp and soulful, with an approach to the tenor that almost reminds us of early 60s Jackie McLean – particularly in the way that Jackie could hit dark corners with raspy, personal tone. The rest of the group's no slouch either – and features Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Walter Bishop Jr on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Pete LaRoca on drums – a lineup so great, they give the album a real Blue Note sort of polish – and the album's definitely one that would have been a better-known date, if it hadn't died quickly on the short-lived Jazztime label. The whole thing's wonderful – and titles include "West 42nd Street", "Avars", "Ease It", "Samba De Orfeu", and "Why Not". CD also features some alternate tracks. CD

Kenny BurrellKB Blues ... LP
Blue Note (Japan), 1957. Near Mint- ... $64.99 78.99
A real hard-burner from Kenny Burrell – a set that was recorded for Blue Note in the guitarist's early career, but not issued by the label until the 70s – and even then only in Japan! Kenny's got the sharp edge and strong sense of leadership you'll hear on his classic Midnight Blue – and the lineup features strong tenor work from Hank Mobley, who seems to underscore the best elements in Burrell's tone – plus work from Horace Silver on piano – who plays with lots of soulful undercurrents, alongside Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums! The record's got some slightly raspy edges, which may be why Blue Note originally held it back – but it's a real treasure for the deeper side of Kenny's tones – and titles include "Out For Blood", "Nica's Dream", "KB Blues", and "DB Blues". Motown/Soulmusic.com (UK), 1974. Used ... $12.99
A tremendous solo act from GC Cameron – a singer who first rose to fame in The Spinners, but who really sounds wonderful on his own! GC's moved away from The Spinners here – into a wide range of styles that show him ready to take on most of the rest of the competition! He's working here with the best of the best of Motown – production from Stevie Wonder and Willie Hutch – and arrangements by both, plus Paul Riser, Gene Page, James Carmichael, and Frank Wilson – all of whom really give their best to the record, and show that Motown was putting plenty of effort into making GC one of the next big stars of the 70s. We're not sure why things never took off as strongly for Cameron, but whatever the case, the album's a great step for the solo artist – on cuts that include "If You Don't Love Me", "Tippin", "All In Love Is Fair", "If You're Ever Gonna Love Me", "Come Get This Thang", "I'm Gonna Give You Respect", and "Let Me Down Easy". CD features an insane amount of bonus tracks – 13 more tracks that include "Act Like A Shotgun", "Girl I Really Love You", "I'm Gonna Get You (parts 1 & 2)", "Don't Wanna Play Pajama Games", "You Are That Special One", "Have I Lost You", "Time", "Topics", and "No Matter Where". Elvis CostelloAlmost Blue ... LP
Columbia, 1981. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Elvis Costello's early 80s foray into 60s Nashville and otherwise country-indebted songbooks – and it's a nice one! Even on his tighter, blistering punk era records, Elvis demonstrated not only the voice, but a great ear for the roots and soul that came before him. He showed some soul love quite profoundly a year-or-so earlier on the Get Happy album, and here he works in a similarly respectful mode for classic country, countrypolitan and even a little bit of honky tonk. Produced by Billy Sherrill – who was absolutely essential in the country crossover sound of the 60s and 70s. It's a bit overlooked, but we love this record! Maybe the funkiest album ever cut for the legendary Westbound label in Detroit – and that's saying a lot, given that the company was the initial home to Funkadelic! Yet on this stunning full length set, The Counts maybe do that famous group one better – pushing aside their vocals for some incredible instrumental interplay that comes from bumping Hammond lines, wickedly sharp drums, and non-stop riffing guitars – all of which take center stage, while the vocals only seem to be part of the mix to urge the instruments onward! A lost album from 70s funk diva Betty Davis – and one that's every bit as essential as her music released back in the day! The set was recorded hot on the heels of Betty's classic Nasty Gal album – but it's got a groove that's almost more in the territory of her first two records on the Just Sunshine label – very hard, heavy, freaky, and fuzzy – with lots of sharp-edged guitar licks wrapped up around Davis' badass vocals – which have just as much attitude as ever! It's not clear why the album never saw the light of day back in the 70s, but it's an essential follow-up to Davis key classics – undeniably funky music by one of the most unique figures ever in soul – the kind of set that would have been a bomb, had it dropped in the 70s – and which will have an even greater impact when let loose in the 21st Century. An album of dark and subtle beauty – and still one of our favorite Miles Davis albums of all time! The set's not as earth-shattering as some of Davis' other work of the 60s, but that's why we like it so much – because the emerging genius of the group with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Tony Williams is held in a really special place here – one that ruminates quietly on space and soul, while Davis majestically directs tones and colors that he'd never gotten in a small group format before! Konk/Big Pink (South Korea), 1975. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
An obscure solo set from Andy Desmond – once a member of Gothic Horizon, but clearly an artist ready to break out on his own – given the sound and scope of the record! The set mixes acoustic elements with some larger arrangements handled by John Gosling, who also co-produced the set with Dave Davies – who also plays some guitar on the record too – bringing in some of the more subtle charms of his own solo work. Desmond's got a very particular style – one that almost feels as if it's reaching for some bigger crossover world, but which in this setting is much more down to earth, so that his charms are never too overwhelmed. Maybe the vibe is a bit like early Gerry Rafferty solo work, before the AOR hits – but you can be the judge, on titles that include "She Can Move Mountains", "In your Life", "Why Not Write Me A Letter", "Annie", "So It Goes", and "Beware". Not the Broadway record that you might guess from the title, but a great showboat for the hipper talents of trumpeter Kenny Dorham! The album is made up of tunes from the famous show, but the presentation here is quite strongly hardbop – blown by Kenny with the same mix of sweet and modern you might hear on his Blue Note records, but a bit looser too – almost with the rougher edges of a Prestige date. Other players include Jimmy Heath on tenor, Kenny Drew on piano, Jimmy Garrison on piano, and Art Taylor on drums – one hell of a great group – and although the titles are familiar – "Can't Help Lovin Dat Man", "Ol Man River", "Why Do I Love You", and "Nobody Else But Me" – they're recast by Kenny as thoughtful little showpieces, rich with imagination, and played as if they were his own compositions. A nicely done collection of post-Irakere work from saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera – pulled from his Columbia recordings of the 80s! The work on the set goes a long way towards fusing the two styles of Paquito's roots – Afro-Cuban rhythms and North American jazz – sometimes in subtle ways that break out within a more straight ahead piece, other times in more outstated modes that recall the sound of Irakere. D'Rivera plays in a variety of settings on the tracks – on both alto sax and clarinet – on a total of 12 titles that include "Why Not", "Song For Maura", "Miami", "Song to My Son", "Monk-Tuno", "Green Dolphin Street", "Manteca", "Claudia", and "Comu Fue". Riverside (Japan), 1959/1962. Used ... $9.99
Lost Bill Evans material from his tremendous early run on Riverside Records – sessions recorded in 1959, but unreleased to the public for many years! The core of the record features Evans working with Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones both rhythm players that Bill interacted with while working in the Miles Davis group, and a strongly-voiced team to echo the sense of space and timing that was the particular Evans touch in the early days. Why these tracks never came out is a real mystery to us – because Bill's still very much at the top of his game, despite having not liked the material at the time of recording – and the Chambers/Jones rhythm section give the tunes a very solid focus throughout. Titles include "You & The Night & The Music", "My Heart Stood Still", "On Green Dolphin Street", "How Am I To Know", and 2 takes of "Woody N You". Added to that number is a really surprising bonus – a 1962 recording of "Loose Bloose", done with Jim Hall on guitar and Zoot Soms on alto – making for one of those rare non-trio dates by Evans! CD

Gold Mind/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 44.99
A huge amount of material from this legendary Philly female trio – three full albums, plus a stunning amount of bonus tracks too! First up is Delusions – one of the best records ever cut by this soulful Philly female trio! The album's one of the first on Salsoul's Gold Mind subsidiary – and it features sparkling club production by the Harris/Baker/Young team – a landmark force not only in Philly disco, but 70s female soul as well – as their backings for groups of this nature are always sensitive to the complexities of the vocals! The record's mostly uptempo – with plenty of soaring tracks that still retain the more soulful sound of the group's early work – and the songwriting's generally tight, a few notches above earlier albums on Warner – showing that their return to the indie fold was a very good move. Titles include the classic "Let No Man Put Asunder" – plus "Doctor Love", "Indian Giver", "Do Me Again", and a great version of Stevie Wonder's "Love Having You Around". On Hold Your Horses, Rochelle and the girls are in full force – with production by Norman Harris and Tom Moulton! The opening trio of cuts have the continuously flowing vibe of an extended suite – and it's a really exhilarating 16 minutes of dancefloor soul – with gorgeous lead and harmony vocals, funky bass grooves and unexpected changes among the club soul standard-bearing grooves. The drum heavy sections of "Let Me Down Easy" and the title track stand out strongly amongst those, but there's lots of nice little twists throughout! Other titles include "Love Thang", and "Double Cross". Breakaway is a fantastic late album from the wonderful First Choice – a trio who started out strongly in soul music first, which was maybe one of the reasons why they always seemed to stand head and shoulders above some of the other female groups in the disco generations! And one of the best moves that First Choice ever made was hooking up with the legendary Norman Harris – the excellent Philly producer who always managed to bring a lot of soul to the dancefloor, and who works wonders here with his Harris Machine production team – really opening up the cuts with plenty of Philly club soul! Cuts include "Can't Take It With You", "Breakaway", "Pressure Point", and "I Can Show You". All 3 albums feature bonus tracks – and then CD4 features more bonus remixes and reworks – which adds in 22 additional tracks to the collection! CD

American bassist Oscar Pettiford left our planet on the other side of the Atlantic – after just a few years of making some big waves on the European scene, where this tribute to his genius was recorded in 1960! The material here appears for the first time – and the bulk of the set features tremendous performances from very hip European groups who were following in the legacy of modern jazz that Pettiford and some of his generation helped unlock on the scene. The set begins with a trio that includes pianist Finn Savery and bassist Erik Moseholm, on titles that include "Bohemia After Dark" and "Willow Weep For Me". Baritone saxophonist Max Bruel leads a quartet through a reading of his own "Blues For Oscar" – followed by four tracks from the trio of pianist Bengt Hallberg, one with vocals from Alice Babs – titles that include "Blues By Alice" and "Dinah". Next is the legendary Jazz Quintet 60 – with Allan Botschinsky on trumpet, Bent Jaedig on tenor, and Bent Axen on piano – doing their renditions of Pettiford tunes "Why Not That's What" and "Blues In The Closet". Vibist Louis Hjulmand follows in a quartet with pianist Finn Savery on the Pettiford tune "Now See How You Are" – then the great Stan Getz comes in to finish things off in a quartet with Bengt Hallberg's trio – serving up takes of "Without A Song", "Get Happy", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", and "Nobody's Sweetheart". A real oddity from George Harrison – a record of abstract electronics, cut right around the same time as his bigger mainstream solo hits! The record is a highly experimental one – a session that has Harrison working with Bernie Krause, and exploring territory that's much more in the late 60s Limelight Records mode than it is that of Apple – which is quite possibly why the label is listed as "Zapple", not "Apple"! Each tune takes up a full side of the album – and builds slowly out of soundshapes and textures, very much in the manner of some of the best work from the academic electronic music centers in the US at the time. And while the album may be a bit loose and unfocused overall, it's actually got a really appealing quality that we love a lot – a sense of free and naive exploration that's pretty great. Two rare Storyville albums from the tremendous vocal team of Jackie & Roy – back to back in a single set! First up is the self titled Jackie & Roy – one of the first albums ever from the team of Jackie Caine and Roy Kral – and one of the best, too! The album's got a relaxed, open-ended approach to jazz vocals that already carries all the hallmarks of the Jackie & Roy style – wordless scatting on some tunes, playful lyrical interplay on others, and a focus on Jackie's ballad talents on some of the gentler numbers – all wrapped up in small combo backing that's sensitive, creative, and modern – yet never in a way that overwhelms the vocals. It's hard to match the poise, class, and cleverness of this one – and the album easily set a new standard for vocal jazz in the 50s! Titles include a few great early tunes by Tommy Wolf – the songwriter who would become so important for the pair – and backing is by Roy on piano, Barney Kessel on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums. Titles include "Let's Take A Walk Around The Block", "You Smell So Good", "Listen Little Girl", "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most", "Bill's Bit", "Dahuud", "I Wish I Were In Love Again", and "Lover". Sing Baby Sing is sublime work from the duo of Jackie & Roy – a guy/gal vocal team, but one with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! Both Jackie Cain and Roy Kral sing – and Roy also plays a mean piano, and writes a fair bit of the tunes too – really lively numbers that show off the bop-styled techniques they developed while working with Charlie Ventura – but with hipper, groovier lyrics – of the sort that are a key precursor to folks like Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg! Instrumentation on the set is great, too – a small combo with guitar from either Joe Rumero or Barry Galbraith – served up in a really great mix of tunes that includes "Season In The Sun", "Slowly", "Cheerful Little Earful", "Why Not Admit It", "You Are The One", and "Hook Line And Snare". The album's filled with great playing, wonderful grooves, and Fred Wesley's keen sense of humor – which sparks the whole set with a sense of warmth and creative play that show why the JBs are still the greatest funk band ever. Includes the excellent "Little Boy Black", which begins with some tasty James Brown vocals; the oft-sampled "Rockin' Funky Watergate"; plus "Step Child", "Makin Love", and "Rice & Ribs". Not as drawn out as Doing It To Death, but more complicated than Food For Thought, and still a totally essential bit of funk! CD

Katherine Rye JewellLive From The Underground – A History of College Radio ... Book
University Of North Carolina Press, 2023. New Copy ... $22.99 29.95
Dusty Groove owes plenty to the world of college radio – and in fact, our store grew out of long years of experience on a college station on the south side of Chicago – so we're extra-pleased not just to see a really comprehensive book on the glory days of college radio, but also one that really gets the history right! Author Katherine Rye Jewell really digs deep here, and gets past the easy tales of freeform rock and alternative radio – to instead look at the larger forces that helped build, shift, and challenge the informal network of small college radio stations that had a huge impact on American music for a few key decades, starting in the 70s. The author brings together case histories of individual stations, key scenes in music, legislative shifts, regulatory changes, and music business practice – all to really illuminate just why college radio was so important in the 70s, 80s, and 90s – and why its legacy still continues so strongly today. The roots of Dusty Groove are hidden in these pages in a few key spots – and we can say that the author definitely writes from the right perspective, and takes time to focus in on all the important things that really matter. Softcover edition is 457 pages, with a small amount of charts and illustrations. Book

Motown/Kent (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A wonderful batch of rare Motown material from Detroit singer Marv Johnson – a vocalist who started out working for Berry Gordy in the late 50s, recording the some of the first material to be released on the Tamla Motown label, and recorded all of the terrific material on this set for Motown from the mid 60s to the start of the 70s! Johnson didn't find his way into the historical canon the way many of the great solo singers and groups he helped pave the way for, but he's no less worthy! This set from Kent UK includes all the tracks from the I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose LP plus previously unreleased numbers numbers and rare mono single mixes – really beautiful stuff and a vital rediscovery of Marv's overlooked work at Motown! Titles include "I'll Pick A Rose For My Rose", "I'm Not A Plaything", "Why Do You Want To Let Me Go", "Bad Girl", "I Miss You Baby (How I Miss You)", the previously unreleased gems "There Goes A Lonely Man", "Understanding", "Farewell Is A Lonely Sound" and more, plus mono versions of several album tracks. 26 tracks in all! Roland KirkVolunteered Slavery ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Near Mint- ... $28.99
Our favorite album ever from Roland Kirk – and a beautiful mix of two different sides of his genius! Side one's got Roland doing these crazy takes on late 60's pop cuts like "My Cherie Amour" and "Say a Little Prayer", plus his own "songs", done with soulful vocals and a straight-on approach that shows him trying to break out of the avant jazz underground, and reach a wider audience with a spiritual message on tracks like "Search For The Reason Why" and "Spirits Up Above". If this description sounds like a mess, it's not – because this side of the album is one of Kirk's most brilliant statements ever about jazz, soul, love and freedom! Side two has Roland in a straighter vein – running through a tight live set from Newport 1968, handled with fire and imagination, the kind of boundless energy he always brought to his public appearances. Tracks on that set include "One Ton", "Three For The Festival", "Afro Blue", and some great remarks by Roland! LP, Vinyl record album

Harry LookofskyStringsville ... LP
Atlantic, 1960. Very Good+ ... $16.99
A rare session of violin-led jazz – recorded for Atlantic Records in 1960! Harry Lookofsky may not be a famous name as a leader in jazz, but he scored strings for many pop and instrumental outings during the 60s – and he also has the distinction of being the father of one of the members of The Left Banke (which is why they got a record deal so early on!). Here, he's working as the leader of a jazz combo, playing violin and viola in a mode that would make Stephane Grappelli proud – but which also has some much darker edges, and a style that's hardly a recreation of older jazz violin modes. The tunes have a hip edge that's almost third stream jazz at times – with arrangements by Bob Brookmeyer and Hank Jones that keep a tightly swinging beat on most tracks, and which also feature solos by the two, plus drums by Elvin Jones and bass by either Paul Chambers or Milt Hinton. Titles include "Dancing On The Grave", "Move", "Champagne Blues", and "Little Willie Leaps". LP, Vinyl record album

Gwen McCraeGwen McCrae Sings TK ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2006. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
A surprisingly great later album from Gwen McCrae – one that has her returning to hit territory of years back, and re-recording older Miami soul hits from the 70s! The sound is far better than we could have hoped for – very much in the older spirit of the TK label, thanks to production by George Perry and Henry Stone that keeps things simple, and which doesn't clutter up the tunes with too many modern flourishes. The musicians are all great too – and include Perry, Little Beaver, Latimore, and Timmy Thomas – the last two of whom also sing on the record! Gwen's not only singing her own hits here either, but tracks by other TK artists like Betty Wright, Paulette Reaves, and Bobby Caldwell – performed very nicely here in versions that are almost as great as the originals. Titles include "Jazz Freak", "What You Won't Do For Love", "Rock Your Baby", "Why Can't We Live Together", "90% Of Me Is You", "Clean Up Woman", "Honey Honey", "You Gotta Love Me", "Rockin Chair", "Misty Blue", and "Party Down". Dave McKennaBlues Up (Piano Solo/Lullabies Of Jazz) ... CD
ABC/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1955/1963. Used ... $9.99 14.99
Rare early work from pianist Dave McKenna – two obscure albums that both feature him working solo! First up is Dave's 1955 debut for ABC Records – a date that features McKenna playing 15 shorter tunes – all handled in solo mode with a wonderfully sensitive touch – one that's never too sleepy, but which has a personal, up-close style that's really great. Dave nicely avoids cliches of other 50s soloists on his instrument – and has a great sense of rhythm on the keys without echoing too much of Tatum or Garner. Titles include "Blues Up", "Why Was I Born", "Deed I Do", "For All We Know", "Like Someone In Love", and "S Wonderful". Next up is Lullabies In Jazz – a set that's not nearly as sleepy as you'd expect from the title! McKenna cut the 1963 date for the Realm label – and although the style is similar to his 1955 debut, it's also a bit more complex as well – somewhat more drawn-out and lyrical, with a great sense of flow on the keys – and more than enough sense of presence to make Dave stand out strongly, even without support from a full trio. Titles include "Lullaby In Blue", "Deep Night", "Dream", "Sleepy Waltz", "Sleep", and "Japanese Sandman". CD

Joe McPhee & Andre JaumeNuclear Family ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Insanely beautiful work from the great Joe McPhee – an album that was recorded and intended to be issued during his groundbreaking stretch with Hat Art Records – but which never saw the light of day at the time! Why that happened, we're not entirely sure – because the album is tremendous right from the very first note – as McPhee blows alto, tenor, and pocket cornet alongside the work of Andre Jaume on alto, tenor, and bass clarinet – in a set of horn-only performances that are breathtaking from start to finish! Jaume's a great player too – and his work of the time, especially on Hat Art, is a masterpiece of subtlety and soul – and he balances McPhee perfectly here, often with some deeper currents that create a beautifully organic energy between the two. Jaume's got this way of handling his reed that's amazing – and, of course, Joe's phrasing is as incredible as always. Titles include great reworks of modern jazz classics – including "Pithecanthropus Erectus", "Self Portrait In Three Colors", "Evidence", "Chelsea Bridge", and "Lonely Woman" – plus the originals "Nuclear" and "Rue St Jaume". Blue Note, 1967. Used ... $12.99
An amazing set by Lee Morgan – and one that was recorded in the 60s, but not issued until many years later! The album has this really weird sound, which is a combination of Morgan's trumpet, Wayne Shorter's tenor, Herbie Hancock's piano, and Bobby Hutcherson's vibes – the last of which gives the record a uniquely angular quality, and a stark modernist sound that's different from other Lee Morgan albums. This odd sound is possibly one reason why Blue Note didn't release the album at the time – and it's also a quality that makes the finally-issued record a real treasure – an even more wonderful chapter in the great later years of Morgan's all-too-short jazz career! The title track "The Procrastinator" is amazing – and other titles include "Soft Touch", "Dear Sir", "Stopstart", and "Rio". CD

A huge amount of unreleased work from Jerry Samuels – better known as Napoleon XIV, after his famous novelty single of the mid 60s – clearly stepping out here as an even more experimental artist overall! The mix of modes here is wonderful – some weird little sonic plays, some surprisingly tuneful songs, and other offbeat modes – all set to themes that are maybe an explanation of why the album wasn't issued at the time – and which still makes the whole thing pretty darn unsettling all these many years later! Titles include the morbid "Rape", which could maybe have been left off – plus "This Is Planet Earth", "Are You A Head", "Fruit Juicy", "Goofin On The Job", "I Owe A Lot To Iowa Pot", "The Children In The Street", "Who Are You To Tell Me Not To Smoke Marijuana", and "The Song I Wrote For Robert Goulet" – plus an odd take on his classic, "They're Coming To Take Me Away Ha Haa (demented mix)". One of the classic bebop sessions that Fats Navarro did for Savoy, featuring the late great trumpeter leading 3 different small groups, with players like Art Blakey, Charlie Rouse, Dexter Gordon, Al Haig, and Tadd Dameron. The recordings have the raw bebop energy that characterized the best of these Savoy sessions, but Navarro's playing adds touches of lyricism not usually heard on recordings like these. New TrollsSearching For A Land ... LP
Cetra (Italy), 1972. Near Mint- 2LP ... $29.99 59.99
An Italian prog classic from the New Trolls – a group who sing in English throughout, and work with a quality that makes us wonder why this set never broke big on the British or American scenes of the 70s! The record's got a very special vibe right from the start – a blend of acoustic guitar and stronger electric elements – served up in modes that use the acoustic instrument to underscore some of the darker, personal currents in the lyrics – almost a departed spirit that seems to leave the singer in this soul-searching position that really colors the tunes. Other instrumentation is a blend of heady guitars, keyboards, and drums – but often used in these really thoughtful ways – not just jamming for jamming's sake, and instead balanced with the lyrics in a very careful manner. Titles include "St Peter's Day", "Percival", "Searching", "Giga", "Bright Lights", "Lying Here", and "A Land To Live A Land To Die". LP, Vinyl record album

One of those funk records that was even pretty darn obscure back in the day – at a time when so many other funk records weren't so obscure! But obscurity aside, the record also quickly grew into the stuff of legend – thanks to a groove that's totally great, and which has all this chugging guitar over popping basslines that really set up the groove – topped with vocals from Ray Alexander that easily move between sweet and raw, and which give the whole thing an earnest, honest sound that's quite different than the bigger mainstream soul of 1973! The whole thing's great – and features two versions, one instrumental one vocal, of the great "Let's Talk" – plus loads more great cuts that include "Taking The Long Way Home", "My World", "My Special One", and "Wiser & Deeper". The Roots make kind of a return to their own roots with Tipping Point – a loose, funky, hip hop soul opus from the legendary Philly crew! The record's got a much more streamlined and focused ambition than Phrenology or Things Fall Apart – and it's a brilliant extenuation of their established style of live funky soul under the forceful rhymes of Black Thought and soulfully sung hooks and choruses. There's that elongated, swirling psych-soul feel that trips it out in spots, but it remains a focused effort, even if the groove is loose. Nothing on the album betrays the crew's now classic approach to hip hop – no trendy concessions or a sad attempt at a radio single to be found. This, kids, is the Roots – they're not pandering to anyone. Elektra/Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 5CDs ... $26.99 28.99
A really great collection – five full albums from keyboard giant Patrice Rushen, plus bonus tracks too! First up is Patrice – her first album for Elektra, and a stunning blend of funky jazz and soul! The record really has Patrice stepping out from her earlier years at Prestige – working in some surprisingly great vocals next to tight lines on Fender Rhodes, synth, and clavinet, handled with a smooth and soulful quality that's wonderful all the way through – a blend of soul and jazz that few other players could do this well – no matter how many others tried to copy her style over the years! Rhythms are as hard and heavy as on the Prestige years, and the keyboards have a great sort of focus too – just the right mix of jazz to offset the vocals – which themselves are a wonderful discovery. The whole album's a gem – and tracks include the great funky classic "Hang It Up", plus "Changes (In Your Life)", "When I Found You", "Play", "Didn't You Know?", and "Music Of The Earth". Pizzazz is one of the records that not only helped break her out of the jazz funk ghetto, and right into the mainstream – but a set that also had a pretty profound influence on the progression of soul in the early 80s! Rushen sings as well as plays keyboards – and really pushes the use of jazzy elements that would take R&B to the next level – almost inventing the 80s groove sound in the process! The whole thing's a totally sweet mix of funk and soul, tightened up to get everything in the door at the same time – and titles include "Givin It Up Is Givin Up", "Call On Me", "Haven't You Heard", and "Let The Music Take Me". Posh is an all-out, all-access affair – a great way for anyone to get into the grooves of the mighty Patrice Rushen! Patrice is at the height of her powers here – equally magic on keyboards and vocals, and coming up with groove after groove in a sublime blend of 70s jazz funk and Minnie Riperton-esque soul! The whole album's a winner – real magic that never gets old, and the kind of LP that makes you understand why you'll find Patrice's records in just about any soul collection from the time! Tracks include "I Need Your Love", "Time Will Tell", "The Dream", "Never Gonna Give You Up", and "Don't Blame Me". Straight From The Heart is one of those albums that completely cemented her standing in the world of jazz, funk, and soul – and a wonderful summation of everything she'd done in the years before! The young Patrice was already a breakout keyboardist on the west coast scene of the mid 70s – turning out great work on her own, and adding her talents to plenty of others – but here, she emerges as a soaring soul star in her own right – a talent who's really worked her way up, with a quality level that's head and shoulders above most of her peers! Rushen produced the set with Charles Mims, and there's a righteous blend of jazz and soul that's at the level of Minnie Riperton, so that even the catchiest cuts come off with a sense of sophistication and warmth that's so different than so much other 80s soul and fusion. Titles include the classic "Forget Me Nots", plus "Number One", "I Was Tired Of Being Alone", "Where There Is Love", "Breakout", "If Only", and "Remind Me". The album Now is a masterpiece of 80s groove with lots of jazzy touches! The keyboard sound has evolved a bit here – compressed with more electronic percussion than on Patrice's earlier records, but still done with a degree of soul that sets it apart from work by most of her contemporaries – and the music has this warm flow that really sets Rushen apart from the rest – a sublime mix of soul, funk, and fusion that holds together perfectly throughout! Titles include "Gotta Find It", "Gone With The Night", "My Love's Not Going Anywhere", "High In Me", "To Each His Own", "Heartache Heartbreak", and "Feels So Real". 5CD set features bonus tracks from original 12" singles – and other remixes too! Steeplechase (Denmark), 2008. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
John Tchicai plays the music of Thelonious Monk, and a few of his own tunes too – in a wonderful set that shows beautifully why we always look out for work from this enigmatic saxophonist! There's definitely a Monkish vibe to the record, but Tchicai's approach is often quite personal too – creating warmth where others might have kept things angular, or changing up the pacing of the tunes – so that he's always leaving a very strong imprint of his own on the recordings, and not just covering too-familiar Monk territory. Each tune has a slightly different execution – and many numbers have John stepping out sparely, blowing in the lead – but with some warmth and depth that's quite different than the coldness of his modern moments from years back. And there's also a bit of Hammond on the record – played by George Colligan, who also alternates on piano – and use of that instrument really makes for a fresh sound too – a wonderful change that's almost like some 60s soul jazz take on Monk. Bass is by Steve Laspina and drums are by Billy Drummond – and titles include "Monk's Mood", "Coming On The Hudson", "Light Blue", "Ugly Beauty", "Ruby My Dear", and "Cool Copy". ✨✧ TemptationsWish It Would Rain ... CD
Motown, 1968. Used ... $14.99
A pivotal moment for The Temptations – a set that has the group hitting even more of a deep soul sound than before – at a level that really sets them apart from some of the other groups on Motown at the time! There's a richer, fuller sound going on here – as the group work with producer Norman Whitfield in a style that's not entirely psychedelic soul, but instead places a strong focus on the emotional power of their harmonies! Tracks are shorter than some of the funky Temps jams, but they pack a hell of a lot in a very small space – as the lyrics bristle with open, honest emotion throughout. Titles include the perennial classic "I Wish It Would Rain" – a song that opens up a whole new level of emotional depth – plus "I Truly Truly Believe", "Why Did You Leave Me Darling", "No Man Can Love Her Like I Do", "Fan The Flame", and "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)". CD
(Early 90's Motown pressing with the tan border – in great shape!)

VariousGo Right – Modern Jazz From Poland 1963 to 1975 (Novi Singers/Polish Jazz) ... CD
JCR/Compost (Germany), 1960s-Mid 70s. Used ... $9.99 11.99
Double length CD that brings together all the tracks from the Polish Jazz and Novi Singers LP releases on JCR! The set's an exquisite compilation of rare jazz tracks from the vastly under-documented (at least in the west!) Polish jazz scene! Poland was hipper than a lot of its eastern european counterparts, and despite years of Soviet oppression, the country did have a thriving jazz scene that turned out some incredibly groovy music. Lots of that music was only ever issued in Poland, and not exported to the rest of the free world – so this collection does an even better service of breaking down the iron curtain, and finally unleashing some real jazz gems! The tracks range from funky to groovy to straight ahead, but they all have the kind of fresh twist that makes the compilation essential listening – with a flavor that's vaguely similar to some of the MPS titles we've carried, but only vaguely so. The quality of the work is impeccable, as is the packaging by the folks at Jazzanova/Compost! Titles include a lot of numbers by the Novi Singers ("Torpedo", "Next, Please", "Jeansy", "The Runaway", and others), plus cuts like "Why Not Samba" by Wojciech Karolak, "Mala Septyma" by Jazz Carriers, "Fair Lola" by Zbigniew Namyslowski Quartet, and "Choreographic Sketches" by Jerzy Milian. Miles Away (UK), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99 29.99
A killer compilation, even if the title and cover don't tell you much about what's going on inside! The set brings together great rare grooves from back in the day – and features tracks that are not just rare, but which also really go beyond the usual American funk and soul – to include rare European cuts, and excellent work from other sources too – all served up in a mix that makes the whole thing one of the freshest funky compilations we've heard in years! Titles include "Fantasy Ride" by Uneda Dennard & Shandells Band, "No Communication (part 1)" by True Transfusion & Linco, "Yes It's You" by Eugene Smiley & The Essence Of Love, "She's So Good" by Solid Gold Revue with Ray Crumley, "Why Did You Do It" by Margaret Singana, "It's Over" by Milan Kymlicka, "Milionbimbo (Ric Piccolo edit)" by Bimbo E I Milionari, "Vale Volar" by Paulina Viroga, "I'm A Believer" by Idris Muhammad, "Deeper" by Colour, "Superstar (ext version)" by Ruth Waters, and "Las Venganzas De Beto Sanchez" by Oscar Lopez Ruiz. VariousSource – Funky Breaks & Sampled Soul Of TK Records ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Famous tracks from the legendary Miami Soul powerhouse TK Records – famous not because they were hits in the 70s, but because they were used in later years as hip hop samples – dug from the deep well of music that TK recorded back in the day, to lay the blueprint for a whole new generation! The set brings together 15 gems that are not only funky, and which have key elements that you'll know from hip hop songs – but which also stand pretty darn strongly on their own, as a fantastic overview of the care of creation that TK brought to its work in the studio. Titles include "Groove To Get Down" by T-Connection, "Dedicate All My Love" by Raw Soul Express, "Sweet Thang" by The 13th Floor, "Living Together Is Keeping Us Apart" by Clarence Reid, "Good Good Lovin" by Charles Johnson, "To Touch You Again/Lady Blue" by John Tropea, "Givin Me Your Love" by Facts Of Life, "Dance With Me" by Peter Brown, "Why Can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas, and both versions of "90% Of Me Is You" – one by Gwen McCrae, one by Vanessa Kendrick. Also features some J Rocc mixes – "I Get Lifted (J Rocc edit)" by George McCrae, "Keep It Up (J Rocc edit)" by Milton Wright, "I Love The Way You Love (J Rocc dub)" by Betty Wright, and "Clean Up Woman (J Rocc edit)" by Betty Wright. ✨✧ Fame GangGrits & Gravy – The Best Of The Fame Gang ... CD
Fame/BGP (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The legendary Fame Gang finally gets their due – in this CD that's overflowing with tight funky instrumentals, most of which have never been issued at all! The "best" in the title is certainly well-put – given the quality of the music – but don't think "hits", as 18 of the CD's 25 tracks have never been issued before – which makes the whole collection way more of a discovery than you might expect! Back in the late 60s, the Fame Gang were the house rhythm section at Fame Records down in Muscle Shoals – as important as the Mar-Keys, Bar-Kays, or MGs were over at Stax Records – and graced with not only an impeccable sense of groove, but also a really bold, soulful flair on their horns! There's no vocals here at all – and the cuts feature loads of tenor, guitar, and organ solos over rhythms that are easily some of the funkiest ever cut at Fame studios. We're not entirely sure why these gems weren't released at the time – but they're all tremendous, and we're plenty happy to have them out now! Titles include "Smokestack Lightning", "Hey Joe", "Soul Stutterin", "Sunrise", "Walk Tall", "Rang's Thang", "Stand", "Cannonball", "Muscle Soul", "Shufflin", "Sax Appeal", "Crime Don't Pay", and "Groove Killer". ✨✧ Gary FarrTake Something With You (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Marmalade/Big Pink (South Korea), 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Early solo work from Gary Farr, and material that's a really great change from his previous work with the T-Bones – a record that really has Gary developing his vocal style in a great way, and singing with arrangements that create a magical, almost mystical flow in his sound! The backings aren't credited, but are possibly handled by Farr, or producer Reggie King – and the style mixes some jazzy inflections with more ambitious rock modes – on tracks that often include some especially nice use of flute, and which have a visionary style that's maybe inspired a bit by the work of Tim Buckley. Farr's presentation of the original lyrics is wonderfully pointed – and titles include "Dustbin", "Two Separate Paths Together", "Curtain Of Sleep", "Why Not", "Time Machine", and "Don't Know Why You Bother Child". ✨✧ Gang Of FourSolid Gold ... LP
Warner, 1981. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning second set from the mighty Gang Of Four – and a record that's got all the power and politics of their famous Entertainment debut! The set's got some wonderfully heavy basslines amidst the scratchy guitar that makes the group so great – but nothing's too polished, certainly not as in their crossover club modes to come – and the call/response vocal style of Andy Gill and Jon King is tremendous – a very fresh way to deliver the message, and one that's still never been matched all these many years later. Titles include "Paralyzed", "What We All Want", "Why Theory", "If I Could Keep It For Myself", "Cheeseburger", "The Republic", "Outside The Trains Don't Run On Time", "In The Ditch", "A Hole In The Wallet", and "He'd Send In The Army". ✨✧ Jack MontroseJack Montrose Sextet ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1955. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful example of why the west coast scene was great when it was working at its finest – that perfect blend of group formation and individual identity that could make a record like this so great! Tenor player Jack Montrose cut a rare few albums in the 50s, but this one's a gem – done with help from frequent partner Bob Gordon on baritone sax, and with other players that include Conte Candoli on trumpet, Paul Moer on piano, Joe Mondragon on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – a well-matched group that definitely knows how to follow the course, and break off in individual directions when needed. The style is tightly arranged, but not too tightly that the band doesn't have room to swing – and the mix of Montrose's tenor and Gordon's baritone is sublime together! Titles include "Listen Hear", "Some Good Fun Blues", "Fools Rush In", "Speakeasy", "Pretty", "Credo", and "That Old Feeling". CD

✨✧ Fats NavarroNostalgia ... CD
Savoy, 1947. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic early bebop from trumpter Fats Navarro – a seminal album that brings together earlier famous 78s recorded for Savoy Records! The set features the late great trumpeter leading 3 different small groups – all top-shelf lineups, with players that include Charlie Rouse or Dexter Gordon on tenor, Tadd Dameron or Al Haig on piano, and Art Blakey on drums! The recordings have the raw bebop energy that characterized the best of these Savoy sessions, but Navarro's playing adds touches of lyricism not usually heard on recordings like these. Certainly one of the albums that will convince you why Fats was so great – with the tracks "Barry's Bop", "Dextrose", "Stealing Trash", and "Hollerin' & Screamin". CD

✨✧ William OnyeaborWho Is William Onyeabor – World Psychedelic Classics 5 (3LP set) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Late 70s/Early 80s. Sealed 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard before – the rightly legendary musical legacy of William Onyeabor, one of the most enigmatic talents to come from the African scene of the 70s! The work here is all plenty darn funky, but it's also very different from familiar Afro Funk too – as the instrumentation is heavy on keyboards, handled by William with incredible dexterity – and spun out in these soaring lines that bristle with righteous touches that really support the message of his tunes! The vibe mixes in some electro elements with long-drawn rhythms – and the vocals often step aside for lots of keyboard and rhythm interplay, then come in to send things home at just the right moment. Onyeabor's been a pretty elusive cat over the years, and it's taken Luaka Bop quite some time to put this collection together – amazing work that may well make the album one of the most important to ever come from the label – and the first introduction to the non-African world of Onyeabor's incredible sounds. Titles include "Body & Soul", "Atomic Bomb", "Something You'll Never Forget", "Why Go To War", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", and "Let's Fall In Love". 3LP set features four bonus tracks not on the CD! ✨✧ PrinceBatman – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Warner, 1989. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Prince got tagged to do the music for the big breakout Batman film from Tim Burton – and the performances here are definitely not the stuff of The Dark Night – and in fact, maybe nothing like you'd expect from Batman at all – even though the music does make a nod or two towards the cowled crusader with some samples! It's clear that Prince just had a fun time putting the whole thing together – and like many other star soundtracks from the 90s, the feel of the music is very much its own thing – which is probably why the record was such a hit, and maybe has had a lot more endurance than the film! Titles include "The Future", "Electric Chair", "Vicki Waiting", "Partyman", "Scandalous", and "Batdance". CD

Grapefruit (UK), New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from an obscure group who recorded some really genius material that never saw the light of day back in the 60s! The set features early New York sessions from the group Rain – a group with Merseyside roots and a previous incarnation as part of the Lomax Alliance – but working here in a superb style that's got this unusual blend of Beatles-era songwriting and production with some of the hipper currents of the American pop psych generation – all of which is completely sublime! The whole thing is wonderful – really instant classic material, and we're not sure why it was never released – but that fault is corrected here, with a stunning batch of tunes that include "No Deposit No Return", "Sapphire Skies", "Sundrops", "You You You", "Midnight Blue", "Something Is Happening", and "One Is All & All Is One". CD also features six more never-issued tracks, from the group's incarnation as Gypsy Wizards – titles that include "In Deadication", "The Old Man", "The Brightest Light", and "Spreading Love All Around". ✨✧ Diana RossLady Sings The Blues ... CD
Motown, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
On the one hand, our jazz snob side wonders why Diana Ross would be picked to star as Billie Holiday, but on the other, it makes perfect sense, as this soundtrack to the film was made during the early 70s, when she was at the top of her career, and one of the highest profile female soul singers. And she acquits herself quite well, with a solid performance that's more than respectable, helped along the way by sympathetic orchestral arrangements from Benny Golson and Oliver Nelson. While we may not turn to this recording over any of Billie's originals, it's a pretty remarkable turning point for Diana, establishing her "diva" status and helping to launch her solo career to new heights. 35 numbers in all, though many of them are dialogue or musical bits lifted from the film. Includes "All Of Me", "the Man I Love", "Ain't Nobody's Business If I Do", "Fine & Mellow", "You've Changed", "My Man", "Strange Fruit" and "God Bless The Child". CD
