✨✧ BeatlesBeatles – The White Album ... LP
Apple, 1968. Good 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
The Beatles at their late best – on 1968's self-titled set – now immortalized as The White Album! The White Album capped offed a period of intense creativity for the band with a double that's as freewheeling as anything they'd ever release. It's got raw rockers with wry lyricism, tender acoustic balladry, psych blues jams and some flat out weird bits. As was always the case, John's and Paul's songs cover the majority of the sides, but The White Album also features what's arguably George's most vital moment as a Beatle with "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Other tracks include "Back InThe USSR", "Dear Prudence","Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", "Martha My Dear", "Rocky Raccoon", "Why Don't We Do It In The Road", "Julia", "Yer Blues", "Sexy Sadie", "Helter Skelter", "Revolution 1", Good Night" and more. Ohio PlayersAngel (180 gram white colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mercury/Culture Factory, 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $24.99 26.98
Maybe the last great album in the Ohio Players run for Mercury in the mid 70s – a set that's every bit as smooth, sexy, and funky as their other major label efforts from the time – and one that continued to refine the grittier funk of their roots! While the Players might be remembered for their over the top jams, the cuts here we love the best are the mellower steppers – tracks that still have plenty of funk in the mix, but hit a gentler groove, too – following the spacey soul legacy of "Sweet Sticky Thing". Titles on the album include "Glad To Know You're Mine", "Angel", "Merry-Go-Round", "Don't Fight My Love", "Body Vibes" and "Ohio". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousLand Of Sensations & Delights – Psych Pop Sounds Of White Whale Records 1965 to 1970 ... CD
White Whale/Craft, Late 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 17.99
A very groovy look at a very groovy record label – LA powerhouse White Whale Records, home to some mighty fine sounds in the second half of the 60s! As you'd guess from the title, there's a slight current of trippiness running through this material, but it's often blended with a really strong sense of production and a nice ear for a hook – maybe a bit like A&M Records, who might be a comparison to some of the work here – as White Whale always had a careful ear for the up-and-coming, and gave them great freedom to do their thing, and the right sort of production and presentation to make everything come out groovy! And although White Whale had some hits back in the day, this material is definitely from the farther reaches of the label's singles – as you can tell from the set list, which includes "Vegetables" by The Laughing Gravy, "You Got The Love" by Professor Morrison's Lollipop, "My Door Is Always Open" by Rainy Daze, "Love Story" by The Brothers, "Superman" by The Clique, "Look At You Now" by Bazooka, "Won't You Say You'll Stay" by The Rockets, "The Proud One" by Buster Brown, "Goin It Alone" by The Bears, "Song #7" by Lyme & Cybelle, "Darlin You Can Count On Me" by The Everpresent Fullness, "Little Girl Little Boy" by The Odyssey, "I'll Be In" by The Answer, and "We Must Find A Way" by The XLs. ✨✧ Gene ClarkGene Clark (White Light) ... LP
A&M, 1971. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Possibly Gene's finest hour, with OR without the Byrds. Much of the record is a spare and intimate affair, with Gene's warm vocals accompanied by his own gently picked acoustic guitar, along with producer Jesse Ed Davis (who does a masterful job in the booth on this one) also on guitar. The tunes are also sweetened by waltzy basslines, and Byrds-y keyboard riffs by Ben Sidran, but Gene's wonderful vocals and his amazingly strong songwriting are obviously the biggest draws. If there was a superior rural accented singer/songwriter record in '72 we haven't heard it! Includes "The Virgin", "With Tomorrow", "White Light", the amazing "For A Spanish Guitar", a great reading of The Band & Bob Dylan's "Tears Of Rage", "Where My Love Lies Asleep" and "1975". Vernon, Early 60s. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An obscure little set, but a nice one too! The album was issued on a cheapish label, with the same cover and title as another release – but the set features some really hard-wailing work by a small combo soul jazz outfit – one with a very searing tenorist in the lead, plus organ and guitar – all in a raw blend of jazz with R&B! The whole thing sounds like one of those killer sets on the Tru-Sound label of Prestige – and tracks include "Come On Seven", "Bop Inn", "Red Romp", "Blues 3", "Lil Ole Jug", "Lazy Blues", and "White Mist". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bobby PattersonMy Thing Is Your Thing – Jetstar Strut From Bobby Patterson (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Jet Star/Modern Harmonic, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky Texas soul from the mighty Bobby Patterson – a singer who also recorded for the Jewel/Paula label in the early 70s, but who's heard here on earlier work for Jetstar Records, plus a few never-issued tracks! Bobby's voice has this great raw style – one that crackles even more as the grooves move faster – really hitting with sock-soul energy on just about every track in this set – clearly inspired by the music of James Brown, but very much off into his own bag – a special funky legacy that's very much Patterson's own! Titles include "My Thing Is Your Thing", "Busy Busy Bee", "Mama's Got A New Bag Too", "TCB Or TYA", "Soul Is Our Music", "I'm Leroy I'll take Her", "I'm A Slave To You", "What A Wonderful Night For Love", "Broadway Ain't Funky No More", "My Baby's Coming Back To Me", and "The Knock Out Power Of Love". Benny Bailey, Ake Persson, & OthersMusic Of Quincy Jones ... LP
Argo, 1960. Very Good+ ... $29.99
An excellent album that's a perfect document of the strong impact that Quincy Jones had in the transatlantic jazz scene of the late 50s and early 60s. The set was recorded in 1960, and features two players that Quincy would leave behind in Europe to have a huge influence on the scene. Trumpeter Benny Bailey is the greatest of these – and his impact on jazz in Germany and Sweden during the 60s and 70s cannot be discounted. The other is drummer Joe Harris, who does excellent work here in a group that includes Arne Domnerus on sax, Ake Persson on trombone, and Gunnar Svensson on piano – all Swedes that Quincy picked up after touring the country heavily during the late 50s. The set grooves with the best of Jones' work on Mercury from the time – and although Quincy's not listed in the credits, it's probably only because of contractual reasons. Titles are all Jones originals – including "Meet Benny Bailey", "Plenty, Plenty Soul", "Fallen Feathers", and "The Midnight Sun Never Sets". LP, Vinyl record album

Gato BarbieriIn Search Of The Mystery ... LP
ESP, 1967. Very Good ... $24.99
One of the first albums ever cut as a leader by reedman Gato Barbieri – and a very sharp-edged session that's quite different than his better-known work in the 70s! Barbieri's tenor here has an incredible tone – as deeply soulful as Pharoah Sanders or late John Coltrane, and blown with a great sense of freedom – really stretching out on the album's long tracks. Gato never lets himself get too unfocused, though – and the album's an illustration of a side of his talents that was perhaps only shown this well on his recordings with Don Cherry. Players include Calo Scott on cello, Sirone on bass, and Bobby Kapp on drums – and the album's got a vibe that easily matches other ESP sets from the time by Charles Tyler or Sonny Simmons. Titles include "In Search Of The Mystery", "Obsession No 2", "Michelle", and "Cinematheque". LP, Vinyl record album

A hipper concert than you might expect – recorded in 1973, and originally issued as a double LP. The band by this point includes Blondie Chaplin and the enigmatic Ricky Fataar – and in some way, the songs have a sincerity that's lacking from a lot of the studio albums at the same time. There's a number of the usual 60s hits that you'd expect – plus nice versions of "Darlin", "The Trader", "Sail On Sailer", "Caroline No", "Heroes & Villains", "Leaving This Town", "Let The Wind Blow", "Funky Pretty", and "You Still Believe In Me". Polly BergenAll Alone By The Telephone ... LP
Columbia, 1958. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A bittersweet set of vocals from Polly Bergen – recorded with a sound that really fits her sad-eyed look on the cover! Although Bergen's voice is sometimes confident and full, it's nicely restrained here – often somewhat dark-toned and moody – in ways that remind us of Morgana King, especially in the way that Polly holds back at just the right moments – keeping things mature by never getting too overly emotive. There's a nice sense of depth to the record that goes way beyond simple pop singing – and Luther Henderson's arrangements further help color the sound of the set – by giving it a sense of unity that almost reminds us of some of Sinatra's best blue-toned late 50s albums for Capitol. Titles include "By Myself", "When The Wind Was Green", "All Alone", "Glad To Be Unhappy", "Too Late Now", "He Didn't Call", and "Not Like Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Maria BethaniaRecital En La Boite Barroco ... LP
Odeon/EMI (Brazil), 1971. Very Good ... $49.99
One of Maria Bethania's first albums, and a beautiful set of live recordings – with a vibe that's a lot more uptempo and swinging than some of her later work! The style here almost has traces of bossa – a lighter, groovier feel at times than some of the more emotive modes that Bethania became known for during her run of 70s MPB. Backing here is by the bossa-esque Terra Trio, and they accompany her deep rich voice nicely on tracks like "Marina", "Carinhoso", "Marginalia II", "Ele Valava Nisso Todo Dia", and a great version of Caetano Veloso's "Baby". Very cool cover, too – with a trippy painting that has Maria's nude torso covered with flowers and bugs! LP, Vinyl record album

Smoking live material from Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers – a set recorded at Birdland, aka The Jazz Corner Of The World – home to a number of key performances by the group! The lineup here features a key transitional version of the group – with the younger Lee Morgan on trumpet and Bobby Timmons on piano, already setting the combo on fire with their new ideas and very bold work on solos – and the great Hank Mobley on tenor, who'd worked with Blakey for a few years at this time – and provides this deeply soulful grounding that's as great as his own records, but maybe even a bit more open in the live setting. The great Jymie Merritt is on bass – one of Art's secret weapons over the years – and the set list of this second volume includes "Chicken & Dumplins", "M & M", "Art's Revelation", and a great version of "Hi Fly". David BowieStation To Station ... LP
RCA, 1976. Very Good ... $24.99
The second half of Bowie's Thin White Duke years in the studio – a record that's more cool and condensed than his Young American album – but equally sublime in its own sort of way! The format here is much more compact – with a small group working alongside Bowie, still with some currents of Philly soul – but also some of the darker tones that would come to the forefront during the Berlin years after this album's release – a mode that's maybe hinted at by the Man Who Fell To Earth image on the cover. A few tracks are long, and build up beautifully – showing a new sort of subtlety from Bowie – and titles include the classic "Station To Station", plus "Golden Years", "Word On A Wing", "TVC 15", "Stay", and "Wild Is The Wind". An early American release of the work of one of France's greatest singers – featuring tracks recorded with the orchestra of Francois Rauber, who was Brel's accompanist on some of his best recordings ever. The package includes many classic numbers like "Jef", "Madeline", "Les Biches", "Mathilde", "Au Suivant", "Titine", "Chanson Sans Paroles", and "Les Bonbons" – and the back cover features some great English translations! LP, Vinyl record album
(White label mono promo! Cover has a promo sticker, light wear, and a bit of aging. Vinyl has a short click on "Bruxelles".)

John Benson BrooksAvant Slant (One plus 1 + II?) ... LP
Decca, Late 60s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A wild one! The set features a strange collage of sounds, songs, effects, and a slight bit of jazz – composed by John Benson Brooks, who'd done some earlier modernist work for Riverside in the early 60s, but who here is working in a mode that's sort of to jazz what structural film of the late 60s was to cinema. Milt Gabler put together a lot of the tracks – drawing from a rich catalog of blues, pop, folk, and rock songs – and overall, the album is more of a "happening" than anything else. A bit hippy dippy – like some of those early structuralist films – but in a way that like those films, still stays quite fresh over the years! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono white label promo. Cover has light wear and aging.)

James BrownGet On The Good Foot ... LP
Polydor, 1972. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $49.99
A really great double-length set from James Brown – maybe slightly less iconic than some of his other classics from the early 70s, but a record that really shows the man stretching out and finding his groove! The whole thing is a great example of the new freedoms that Brown was experiencing away from King Records – and the approach not only recreates the mix of funk and soul that you'd find on Hell, but also echoes some of the People Records style to come too – in part because there's a few tracks that have the vibe of a funky 45, and also because James lets the newly-revived Hank Ballard com in and do a 5 minute recitation about how great James has been to his career. Titles include the long numbers "Funky Side Of Town" and "Please Please" – plus "Your Love Was Good For Me", "The Whole World Needs Liberation", "Nothing Beats A Try But A Fail", "My Part/Make It Funky (parts 3 & 4)", "I Got A Bag Of My Own", "Dirty Harri", "Recitation by Hank Ballard", "Ain't It A Groove", "I Know It's True", "Get On The Good Foot (parts 1 & 2)", and "Cold Sweat", in a new arrangement by Dave Matthews! Marion BrownAfternoon Of A Georgia Faun ... LP
ECM, 1970. Very Good+ ... $34.99
One of Marion Brown's more ambitious albums – and a key bridge from his freer work of the late 60s, to his more contemplative sides of the early 70s. The instrumentation on the set's a bit more expanded than on other Brown albums – with saxes by Anthony Braxton and Bennie Maupin, piano and percussion by Chick Corea, percussion by Andrew Cyrille, and voice by Jeanne Lee and Gayle Palmore. At times, the setting gets a bit cluttered, and obscures Brown's soulful tone a bit too much – but at others, the whole thing comes off well. Titles include "Djinji's Corner" and "Afternoon Of A Georgia Faun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stanley ClarkeChildren Of Forever ... LP
Polydor, 1973. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
Quite possibly the hippest album that Stanley Clarke ever cut – a stretched-out soulful batch of jazz-tinged tracks – very much in the same spirit as the more righteous soul jazz underground of the time! In a way, the record would be much more at home on a label like Strata East than it would at Polydor – thanks to vocals from Andy Bey and Dee Dee Bridgewater – and a group lineup that includes Pat Martino on guitars, Art Webb on flute, Lenny White on drums, and Chick Corea on keyboards! Corea produced, and there's a bit of the free-floating style of Return To Forever here – but the overall vibe is a lot more soulful too, and reminds us a fair bit of some of the earliest work by Norman Connors or Carlos Garnett – both of whom used Bridgewater as a vocalist in similar settings. Titles include "Children Of Forever", "Butterfly Dreams", "Sea Journey", and "Unexpected Days". LP, Vinyl record album

Clarke Boland Big BandLatin Kaleidoscope ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1968. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $43.99
One of the greatest records ever by this hip jazz ensemble – and one of their most unique! The record has the band grooving hard through two incredible suites of Latin music – Gary McFarland's "Latin Kaleidoscope" and Francy Boland's "Cuban Fever" – each of which takes up a side of the record, both driving the band to new solo heights with a very hip edge! Players include the usual cream of the crop of European jazz residents – like Sahib Shihab, Dusko Goykovich, Jimmy Deuchar, Phil Woods, Tony Coe, and Benny Bailey – and the tracks include "Uno Graso De Areia", "A Rosa Negra", "Olhos Negros", "Cara Bruja", and "Fiebre Cuban". Wonderful all the way through – and always a treasure! One of the shining jewels in the crown of MPS – and a Gilles P classic all the way through! LP, Vinyl record album

Fantasy, 1970. Very Good+ ... $19.99
An overlooked album from Clover – a great Bay Area group from the start of the 70s – best known for later work with Elvis Costello and Huey Lewis! Clover is a great start for a very cool group – a set that definitely draws on some of the "out of the city" sounds of the post-Haight scene in SF – as you might guess from the cover – but which also has some funkier undercurrents too, and almost a garagey mix of soul amidst the rootsy elements – one that really shows the evolution of a group like this from the styles of a few years before! Titles include a cover of "Shotgun", plus "Come", "Could You Call It Love", "Southbound Train", "Going To The Country", and "Stealin". LP, Vinyl record album

Muse, 1976. Near Mint- ... $7.99
Way more than just a traditional "battle of the saxes" sort of set – hardly the bop frenzy you might expect, and instead a great little record that's right up there with the hippest 70s work of Eric Kloss! Both Cole and Kloss dominate the record – one in the right channel, one in the left – supported by some really great rhythm from Mickey Tucker on electric piano, Rick Laird on bass, and Eddie Gladden on drums – a cool combo who play with an open, spiritual sort of groove on most numbers. The tracks are quite long, and filled with feeling – an almost Strata East-like energy at times, with key evidence of Tucker's force in the record. Titles include "Harold's House Of Jazz", "Ebony Godfather", "Robin", and "DC Farewell". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CommonResurrection ... LP
Relativity, 1994. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
In 1994 when everyone seemed to be turning hardcore, Common Sense wasn't having it. Introspective tales of growing up and living on the South Side that fit perfectly with No I.D.'s mellow production and spiced up with two guest appearances by Y-Not aka Twilight Tone. Classic LP, solid all the way through. Being in Chicago, people have have always asked is for this one, and that tradition continues over the years. This one was made with little regard to contemporary trends, and thanks to that, it's fresh to this day! Includes "I Used To Love H.E.R.". The rare folksy psychedelic solo set from Tommy Flanders of the Blues Project – a fairly stripped down, acoustic guitar and misty-eyed vocals led set of tunes. ✨✧ Von FreemanDoin' It Right Now ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A classic "discovery" of tenor saxophonist Von Freeman – one that was already relatively late in his career, but a key appearance on Atlantic under the auspices of Roland Kirk! The setting here is as loose and laidback as Von needs to really do his thing – backing by a trio that features fellow Chicagoan John Young on piano, plus Sam Jones on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – all hanging back nicely to let Freeman dominate the set on tenor. The album's noteworthy for its inclusion of a few original tunes by Von – "White Sand", "Portrait Of John Young", "Doin It Right Now", "Brother George", and "Catnap" – all of which mark a nice contrast from some of the more traditional standards that show up on other Freeman albums of the 70s. Heat, 1979. Very Good+ ... $18.99
The third album by the Chicago Gangsters – recorded after they began working out of their native Ohio, and not the Chicago studio scene, hence the dropping of "Chicago" from their name! The record has the band moving into a smooth funky modern soul style – with some good harmony vocals, and lots of very nice production with a slinky sexy style. The record includes the band's great "Wop That Wandy", a nice track with a cool funk groove that mixes 2 guys shooting the breeze, with sweet soulful vocals by a female singer on the chorus. Other nice cuts include "Smoke", "Chuga Chuga", and "Sunshine Of My Life". LP, Vinyl record album
