✨✧ Sal Maida, Mitchell Cohen, & FriendsWhite Label Promo Preservation Society – 100 Flop Albums You Ought To Know ... Book
HoZac, 2021. New Copy ... $28.99
A really great idea for a book on records – and one that's completely different than most that we've seen before! Unlike other books of this nature, which are filled with "essential" or "classic" records – this book is full of flops, or records that never really hit the heights, but which are pretty darn great overall! In the eyes of the authors – and our eyes too – all of these records are under-acknowledged gems – some by big names, others by more obscure artists – lots of which never got their full due at the time. The book is filled with some of our favorite records of all time – which is a big hats off to the long list of contributors, who include Miriam Linna, Steve Shelly, Peter Holsapple, Russ Titelman, Marshall Crenshaw, Bob Irwin, Lenny Kaye, and many others – who've come up with a set of essays on titles that include The Living Legend by Baby Huey, Gene Clark & The Gosdin Brothers, Continued by Tony Joe White, Delta Sweete by Bobby Gentry, Entertainment by Family, Desertshore by Nico, Young Mod's Forgotten Story by The Impressions, Roots by The Everly Brothers, Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt, and lots lots more! The book is filled with records that we love, and that we'd now call classic – served up in a hefty softcover edition that's almost 400 pages in length, with black and white images throughout. Book

✨✧ D'AngeloLive ... LP
White Label, 1996. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary live set from D'Angelo – recorded early in his career, and working through a host of classic tunes that really add in a nice layer to his own great music! D'Angelo's caught here in the legendary temple of groove – London's Jazz Cafe, home to some of the best funk and soul shows in Europe over the past few decades – and a perfect setting for the singer to really break past his more hitbound material, and relaxed in an old school format with a tight funky combo on the stage. The crowd is extremely enthusiastic, and the whole thing falls together beautifully – with a hard raw soul vibe that's similar to, but edgier than, D'Angelo's studio albums – much funkier overall, and more in a 70s soul mode! Titles include "Not What You Say It's What You Do", "Sweet Sticky Thing", "Jonz In My Bonz", "Me And Hose Dreamin Eyes Of Mine", "Sh_t, Dam, Mother F_cker", "Cruisin", "Thankful For The Love", "Lady" and "You Can't Hide Love". ✨✧ Barry MilesZapple Diaries – The Rise & Fall Of The Last Beatles Label (hardcover) ... Book
Peter Owens (UK), 2015. New Copy ... $6.99 26.95
A really cool look at a label that was maybe one of the hippest things the Beatles ever did – the short-lived Zapple imprint – which was part of their main Apple label, but dedicated to more experimental work from a variety of musicians and writers! The imprint is perhaps best remembered as the home of more avant recordings by John & Yoko, and by George Harrison – but it also presented material by Allen Ginsberg, Charles Bukowski, Charles Olson, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and other key underground figures – a legacy that would have been enormous, had it continued. The book is put together by Zapple label manager Barry Miles – and includes loads of photos and images too – studio shots, ads, and a lot more elements that help bring this lost label to life once again! 272 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. ✨✧ VariousGilles Peterson Presents MV4 (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Brownswood (UK), 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99 31.99
A fantastic moment of music from a single day in the studio – a real outpouring of creative activity from the contemporary London scene! MV4 stands for studio four at Maida Vale – a legendary London recording spot, host on this day to some of the hippest talents in the city, brought together under the guidance of Gilles Peterson, who wanted to record some of his favorites for a broadcast on the BBC – a great blend of soul and jazz that really reflects the creative energy of the city! As with so much other work from London of late – especially releases on the Brownswood label – there's a very collaborative spirit going on, and almost all the tracks feature keyboard work from the great Joe Armon-Jones, whose warm tones really add a lot of soul and spirit to the sessions – alongside vocals from Oscar Jerome, Fatima, and Hak Baker – and saxophone from Nubia Garcia. The Ishmael Ensemble get one track of their own – "The Chapel/Tunnels" – and other tunes include "Hold", "Only", "Starting Today", "Do You Really", "Almost Went Too Far", and "Thirsty Thursday". ✨✧ Ohio PlayersAngel (180 gram white colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Mercury/Culture Factory, 1977. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the last great album in the Ohio Players run for Mercury in the mid 70s – a set that's every bit as smooth, sexy, and funky as their other major label efforts from the time – and one that continued to refine the grittier funk of their roots! While the Players might be remembered for their over the top jams, the cuts here we love the best are the mellower steppers – tracks that still have plenty of funk in the mix, but hit a gentler groove, too – following the spacey soul legacy of "Sweet Sticky Thing". Titles on the album include "Glad To Know You're Mine", "Angel", "Merry-Go-Round", "Don't Fight My Love", "Body Vibes" and "Ohio". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lenny WhiteLenny White Presents The Adventures of The Astral Pirates – A Musical Space Odyssey ... LP
Elektra, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Space seemed to be a logical direction for Lenny White to go – since his high-powered fusion drumming style is enough to power him right out of the galaxy! This album's a hard heavy batch of funky fusion tunes – with lots of hard drums by Lenny, and spacey spacey keyboards by the great Don Blackman! Patrick Gleeson had a hand in some of the synthesizer work, and he gives the album a similar astral sound to the work he did on the Mercury label at the same time. There's a lot of guitars in the lead, but they sound pretty nice next to Lenny's heavy drums – and titles include "Heavy Metal Monster", "Assault", "Climax", "Universal Love", "The Great Pyramid", and "Remembering". ✨✧ VariousLand Of Sensations & Delights – Psych Pop Sounds Of White Whale Records 1965 to 1970 ... CD
White Whale/Craft, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very groovy look at a very groovy record label – LA powerhouse White Whale Records, home to some mighty fine sounds in the second half of the 60s! As you'd guess from the title, there's a slight current of trippiness running through this material, but it's often blended with a really strong sense of production and a nice ear for a hook – maybe a bit like A&M Records, who might be a comparison to some of the work here – as White Whale always had a careful ear for the up-and-coming, and gave them great freedom to do their thing, and the right sort of production and presentation to make everything come out groovy! And although White Whale had some hits back in the day, this material is definitely from the farther reaches of the label's singles – as you can tell from the set list, which includes "Vegetables" by The Laughing Gravy, "You Got The Love" by Professor Morrison's Lollipop, "My Door Is Always Open" by Rainy Daze, "Love Story" by The Brothers, "Superman" by The Clique, "Look At You Now" by Bazooka, "Won't You Say You'll Stay" by The Rockets, "The Proud One" by Buster Brown, "Goin It Alone" by The Bears, "Song #7" by Lyme & Cybelle, "Darlin You Can Count On Me" by The Everpresent Fullness, "Little Girl Little Boy" by The Odyssey, "I'll Be In" by The Answer, and "We Must Find A Way" by The XLs. Appletree TheatrePlayback ... LP
Verve, 1967. Very Good ... $43.99
Mid 60s concept pop from Appletree Theatre – a mix of unpredictable baroque pop, soaring string laden tunes, and more stripped down and moody numbers – and programmed as acts, in keeping with the theatre mode! What's most impressive, other than the tuneful songcraft, is that it never comes off as shtick, and the concept doesn't get in the way of the songs, making this a really nice discovery! Arranged as a 3 act play, with overture and epilogue, titles include "Lullaby", "Hightower Square", "Saturday Morning", "Nevertheless It Was Italy", "I Wonder If Louise Is Home", "E-Train", "Brother Speed", "Don't Blame It On Your Wife", "What A Way To Go" and more. ArgentAll Together Now ... LP
Epic, 1972. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $24.99
One of the standout moments in the career of Rod Argent – a record that gave his self-named group one of their biggest hits ever, yet a set that still kept all the depth and diversity of their other records too! The album starts out with the group's famous "Hold Your Head Up" – the anthemic strutter that crossed over big, and which burns here with plenty of great organ lines from Rod. Other numbers really mix things up – rocking harder than Rod's Zombies work, but also showing some complicated sensibilities too – brought out nicely by co-producer Chris White, who also wrote most of the songs on the date with Argent. Titles include "Pure Love", "He's A Dynamo", "Hold Your Head Up", "Be My Lover Be My Friend", "Keep On Rolling", and "I Am The Dances Of Ages". LP, Vinyl record album

Some very groovy big band work from Louis Bellson – working here in a Project 3 mode that's as much funky easy as it is jazz! The album's got some very tasty Varitone work by Pete Christlieb – blowing over the top of the group's vamping, chomping charts with a flatly soulful tone on the best numbers. The groove changes nicely from track to track – not entirely funky, but with some good swinging and mod moments that mix in some slight electric playing to the overall big band sound. Titles include "The Eel", "3 x 5 + 16", "The Oracle Speaks", "Breakthrough", "Moment Of Truth", and "Ode To Billy Joe". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chris ClarkChris Clark – The Motown Collection ... CD
Motown (UK), Late 60s. Used 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
The complete Motown work of Chris Clark – one of the few white singers ever signed to the label, and a great vocalist at that! Chris has a sound that's quite unique – halfway between Motown soul and some of the soul-inspired pop of the time – particularly that of UK singers like Dusty Springfield and some of her generation. There's a proud, bold sound here – all Motown in the backings, and often done with the kind of tightly-stepping grooves that have made some of Chris' singles big ones on the Northern Soul scene over the years. The 2CD set offers a huge amount of her work for Motown – the complete contents of 2 albums (Soul Sounds and CC Rides Again), plus non-LP singles, and a full bonus CD that includes 25 previously unissued tunes! As with other releases in this great Motown UK series, the notes are completely thorough – and take you through Chris' career, and into the vaults for the rarer bits too. The package features a total of 50 numbers that include "I Want To Go Back There Again", "Love's Gone Bad", "Born To Love You Baby", "How About You", "Can I See You In The Morning", "One", "Don't Be Too Long", "I Love You", "The Beginning Of The End", "Ask Any Girl", "Everything Is Good About You", "It Must Be Love Baby", "I Like Everything About You", "What You Doing", "Bad Seed", and "Something's Wrong". An overlooked album from Clover – a great Bay Area group from the start of the 70s – best known for later work with Elvis Costello and Huey Lewis! Clover is a great start for a very cool group – a set that definitely draws on some of the "out of the city" sounds of the post-Haight scene in SF – as you might guess from the cover – but which also has some funkier undercurrents too, and almost a garagey mix of soul amidst the rootsy elements – one that really shows the evolution of a group like this from the styles of a few years before! Antonino D'AmbrosioHeartbeat & A Guitar – Johnny Cash & The Making Of Bitter Tears (paperback) ... Book
Basic, 2011. New Copy ... $4.99 16.99
A deep look at one of the more unusual Johnny Cash albums of the 60s – his Bitter Tears/Ballads Of The American Indian – a set recorded in 1964, and years ahead of its time in terms of drawing attention to Native American culture! The set was a real surprise at a time when Johnny was at the top of the charts with a succession of hits for Columbia Records – and the author does a really great job of placing the record, both in Cash's career, and in the overall milieu of music at the time – nicely situating the album's appeal with the folk crowd that his label was also doing a lot to woo during the period. The album was quite controversial, and the book looks at the response to its release as well – in this softcover edition of 279 pages, with some black and white images. Book

Atco, 1960. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A really surprising pairing of talents – and one that makes the album one of the real standouts from the early Bobby Darin years on Atco Records! Johnny Mercer was one of the coolest, grooviest songwriters of the 40s – and he was also a singer with a hell of a lot of charm – which makes him a perfect match here for Darin, who was a master showman right from the start! The pair trade lines wonderfully, and get the right sort of jazzy backings from Billy May – who knows how to keep things swinging, and lift the spirits of the set! The album starts and ends with the warm title cut "Two Of A Kind" – co-written by the pair – and other titles include some great Mercer compositions, plus other titles too – with tracks that include "Ace In The Hole", "East Of The Rockies", "Bob White", "Mississippi Mud", and "Who Takes Care Of The Caretaker's Daughter". Al Di MeolaLand Of The Midnight Sun ... LP
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint- ... $29.99
A real 70s standout from guitarist Al Di Meola – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of most of his albums from the decade! The record's one that broke Al's talents out to so many different groups – yet never in a way that waters down his sound, nor dims his genius for a solo. Al plays a host of guitars – electric, and both six and 12 string acoustic – the latter of which are especially beautiful, and handled in a balance between European virtuoso modes, and some of the more rhythmic elements of the American fusion scene. Speaking of fusion, the other players on the date really help set the tone – Chick Corea on keyboards and piano, Barry Miles on Fender Rhodes and mini-moog, Stanley Clarke on bass, and both Steve Gadd and Lenny White on drums – each setting a different pace when they appear. Titles include "The Wizard", "Suite Golden Dawn", "Short Tales Of The Black Forest", and "Land Of The Midnight Sun". LP, Vinyl record album
(White label test pressing from the Pitman plant, in a plain white cover with promo stamp, and wrap-around cover sheet loosely attached and taped at the bottom.)

✨✧ Lorraine EllisonStay With Me ... LP
Warner, 1969. Very Good+ ... $28.99
Deep deep soul from Lorraine Ellison – a record that already shows quite a bit of growth from her earlier Warner Brothers recordings – and a new sense of hipness as well! There's definitely an influence here of the sound of Stax and Atlantic Records at the end of the 60s – all focused through the excellent production and songwriting of Jerry Ragovoy, who's a key influence on the record – and who really helps make it one of Lorraine's greatest moments ever! If you've ever wanted to dig Lorraine Ellison, this is definitely the place to start – as it's an album we'd easily stack next to the best from any of our favorite female deep soul singers. Tracks include the classic "Stay With Me", plus "I Want To Be Loved", "Heart Be Still", "You Don't Know Nothing About Love", and "The Hurt Came Back Again". LP, Vinyl record album

Fontana, 1969. Very Good+ ... $44.99
This is the US issue of the 1969 album that Serge and Jane Birkin cut together, and every track is a groovy French classic, of the sort that made Serge a legend! The arrangments are amazing, and feature some of the weirdest instrumentation ever heard on a pop record – especially one that was as successful as this. The tracks are insane, and even though the lyrics are in French, you'll be able to get more than enough of them from the sexy interpretation! Highlights include "69 Anne Erotique", "Jane B", "Elisa", "Orang Outan", and "Manon" – but it's all good! Plus, this US version of the album also includes the hit single "Je T'Aime . . . Moi Non Plus"! LP, Vinyl record album

The third album by the Chicago Gangsters – recorded after they began working out of their native Ohio, and not the Chicago studio scene, hence the dropping of "Chicago" from their name! The record has the band moving into a smooth funky modern soul style – with some good harmony vocals, and lots of very nice production with a slinky sexy style. The record includes the band's great "Wop That Wandy", a nice track with a cool funk groove that mixes 2 guys shooting the breeze, with sweet soulful vocals by a female singer on the chorus. Other nice cuts include "Smoke", "Chuga Chuga", and "Sunshine Of My Life". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Peter GuralnickSam Phillips – The Man Who Invented Rock N Roll ... Book
Little Brown, 2015. New Copy ... $2.99 19.99
The story of one of the all-time greats – told by one of the all-time greats – the full tale of Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, told by southern music giant Peter Guaralnick! Long before he rose to fame as the man who discovered Elvis Presley, Sam Phillips was already humming strong with his Memphis-based Sun Records label – home to an amazing run of blues, R&B, and rockabilly – with important initial recordings by artists who include Howlin Wolf, Ike Turker, Johnny Cash, and many others! And while the story of Sun has often been told in overdone cliches and too-heavy platitudes, Guaralnick really gets behind those landmarks, and tells the real tale of the man and his music – with treatment of Phillips that's almost as detailed as some of his writings on Elvis. The book is massive – over 750 pages, and a rock-solid read throughout – with some black and white images. Book

UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center, 2012. New Copy ... $6.99 19.95
A fascinating look at the world of Mexican music in the 20th Century – put together in collaboration with Arhoolie Records, the label that's done plenty to reissue the music over the years! The book begins with the huge archive of recordings by the label's founder, Chris Strachwitz – then takes off in a number of different streams – providing historical context, critical evaluation, and even some discographical details – in the form of various lists and sections of music. The book looks at some key styles too – including corridos and mariachi, traced both through Mexican recordings, and US singles by Mexican-Americans – and the whole thing is only the tip of the iceberg, in relation to the 40,000 recordings that have been digitized by the University Of California Library as part of the project. Still, there's plenty here to get you started – a huge amount of information that's even more inspirational than some of Arhoolie's great reissues over the years – in an oversized book that's 226 pages, softcover, with many black and white images too. One of the few albums to really get at the genius of the Lionel Hampton group at the height of their powers – their crowd-pleasing antics that were always a big draw for live audiences! This set catches Hamp and a great group at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium – playing on long tracks with plenty of cool flourishes and really strong standout moments – pyrotechnic throughout, even in the mellower moments! Hampton is on piano, vibes, and drums – and other players include Willie Smith on alto, Charlie Shaves on trumpet, and Milt Bucker on piano. Tunes include "Kaba's Blues", "Hamps Boogie Woogie", "Perdido", and "Central Avenue Breakdown". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Beaver HarrisBeaver Is My Name ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1983. New Copy ... $18.99
The cover's got Beaver Harris drumming on the brick railing of a balcony in New York – but don't worry, because the record features Beaver on his more familiar drum kit – and working with a really great quartet that includes some tremendous tenor from Andrew White – plus bass from Junie Booth, and Francis Haynes on steel drums! The use of steel drums might seem a bit unusual, but it brings in all these special colors to the record – as Haynes plays in unconventional ways, which you might well expect with Beaver in the lead – and also makes for one of the freshest settings we've ever heard for Andrew, who often recorded solo or in standard groups on his own label records as a leader. Tracks are all nice and long, and continue the imaginative spirit that Harris brought to more famous records – on titles that include "African Drums Medley", "It's Hard To But We Do", "JC Moses", "Necaumong Us", and "Ismay My Mother". We're not sure how much of this music was actually used in the crazy movie about a man with two heads from two races (white and black, natch – and starring Rosie Grier and Ray Miland), but it was produced by Michael Viner (then head of the hip Pride/MGM soul imprint), and includes two great tracks from his Incredible Bongo Band ("Bongolia" and "Bongo Rock"), plus two Ollie Nightingale cuts ("Here I Am Again" and "May The Best Man Win") and two Sylver's cuts (including the break classic "Fools Paradise".) Jimmy James & The VagabondsNew Religion ... LP
Atco, 1967. Very Good ... $24.99
Although they were a UK soul act, Jimmy James and The Vagabonds were a perfect match for the Atlantic soul stable of the 60s. The group had a smooth group style that was partly uptown, partly northern soul – as clearly illustrated in this album, which is divided up into a "mood red: you feel like leaping" side, and a "mood blue: you feel like digging deeper" side. The band chose some good material that really helps them maintain a solid socking soul sound – including "The Entertainer" and "Ain't Love Good, Ain't Love Proud" by Tony Clarke, "Ain't No Big Thing" and "I'm Just A Fool For You Girl" by Gerald Sims, and "Little Boy Blue" and "People Get Ready" by Curtis Mayfield. Also features "Come To Me Softly", a sweet dreamy ballad by Jimmy, and kind of a bit crossover hit for the boys. LP, Vinyl record album

RCA, 1967. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Early genius from these Bay Area stalwarts – one of the greatest rock records of its time! Surrealistic Pillow is the second Jefferson Airplane album, but they took a number of huge creative leaps in the 8 months or so between their debut record and this one. This one is where they're joined by psych siren Grace Slick, but it's not just the line-up change that sets it apart. Surrealistic Pillow is a perfect title, as it's comforting and disorienting at the same time. It's also the magical confluence of wildly different spirits – with standout contributions by the entire band. Titles include the seminal "White Rabbit" – plus "Embryonic Journey", "3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds", "DCBA 25", "How Do You Feel", "Today", "She Has Funny Cars", and "Plastic Fantastic Lover".
