WhirlwindBlowing Up A Storm (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Chiswick (UK), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 28.99
A surprising record from the glory days of the UK punk scene – served up by a group who frequently opened for the big acts of the day, but who have a vibe that's decidedly much more old school overall! Whirlwind have a sound that's very much in keeping with their look on the cover – a raw-styled groove that goes back to the early years of rock and roll – which includes them serving up a few hip covers from the 50s, and mixing them with their own well-crafted originals too! The whole thing's a great reminder that if you were on the ground in the UK scene in the late 70s, things were a lot more complicated than the history books might make you think – a legacy that certainly lives on here, in cuts that include "Slow Down", "Tore Apart", "Together Forever", "My Bucket's Got A Hole In It", "My Advice", "Don't Be Crazy", and "Blue Moon Of Kentucky". SpinWhirlwind (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Ariola/Big Pink (South Korea), 1977. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
The soaring second album from Spin – and like the first from this hip Dutch combo, a very cool mix of funky jazz, tighter arrangements, and some forward-moving rhythms! The sound isn't exactly in the CTI/Kudu records mode, but definitely falls in the same side of the jazz spectrum – as the arrangements are key to the sound of the record, and balance the lineup's sound that includes saxes and flute from Jan Vennik, trumpet from Rein Van Der Broek, drums from Cees Krandenburg, bass from Jan Hollestelle, and guitar from Hans Hollestelle – plus keyboards from both of the last two as well! Things have a nicely swirling vibe – almost an AOR take on funky fusion at times, but with only a bit of vocals on the records, as the set is mostly instrumental – and the group also bring in the great Toots Thielemans for harmonica solos on two tracks too. Titles include "Super B", "Yellow Kites", "You're A Clown", "T Ford Two", "Tarantula", "Baby's Delight", "Dance Of The Seagull", and "Telegraphcanyon Roadrunner". CD

Logan RichardsonAfrofuturism ... CD
Whirlwind, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
We've always loved the music of Logan Richardson, but here he's onto something completely new and groundbreaking – as you might begin to guess from the cover and title! Logan still blows alto sax, but he also handles piano and keyboards, and works in this swirling mix of sound that really lives up to what you might expect – really far-seeing future jazz – with rhythms that shift and soar, instrumentation that shimmers and glows, and a sound that's very cosmic and righteous throughout! The set also features vibes and keyboards from Peter Schlamb, guitars from Igor Osypov, bass from Dominique Sanders, and drums from Ryan Lee and Corey Fonville – set to some occasional vocals from Laura Taglialatela, and light use of strings to really give the music a sense of majesty. Titles include "Say My Nhame", "Awaken", "The Birth Of Us", "Black Wallstreet", "Farewell Goodbye", "For Alto", "According To You", "Praise Song", and "Photo Copy". CD

Walter Smith III & Matthew StevensIn Common 2 (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
Whirlwind, 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 28.99
A great second set from this group led by tenorist Walter Smith III and guitarist Matthew Stevens – music that rings out with a really beautiful, resonant sound right from the very first note – a unique blending of the two instruments, in ways that often have lots of edges and angles on the guitar, warmed up nicely by the tenor! Other group members include Micah Thomas on piano, Linda May Han Oh on bass, and Nate Smith on drums – and the tunes bubble and pulsate with really fresh, unique rhythms that match the energy of the tenor and guitar, as the group make their way through some well-penned tunes by both Smith and Stevens. Titles include "Little Lamplight", "Opera", "Type Rider", "Van Der Linde", "Clem", "Cowboy", "Lotto", and "Provinces". LP, Vinyl record album

Georgie FameGeorgie Fame & The Blue Flames – The Complete Live Broadcasts – BBC Radio Sessions 1964 to 1967 ... CD
Rhythm & Blues (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Rare live work from one of our favorite British talents of the 60s – singer/organist Georgie Fame, a musician who was strongly inspired by American jazz and soul, but quickly took things into a territory that was all his own! Georgie barely cracked our shores during the 60s, but over in the UK, he was a whirlwind of energy – moving from an initial mix of soul and jazz covers to some wonderful songs of his own – all done here with plenty of his own great instrumentation on the Hammond, in a combo that also features Peter Coe on tenor, Colin Green on guitar, and Speedy Acquaye on congas! The work is very well-recorded – originally broadcast by the BBC, and kept safely on tape for years – and this 2CD version features 64 tracks in all, including some interview bits between the songs. Titles include "Preach & Teach", "Boot Leg", "My Girl", "The World Is Round", "Ride Your Pony", "Monkeying Around", "Something", "Like We Used To Be", "No No", "Point Of No Return", "Telegram", "In The Meantime", "Let The Sunshine In", and "Tell All The World About You". Lauryn HillMTV Unplugged 2.0 ... CD
Columbia, 2002. Used 2 CDs ... $4.99
Ms Hill's notorious double album follow up to the Miseducation Of. . .album – a pretty nice set of unvarnished, intimate performances that would have gone done a lot smoother in an earlier era! After the whirlwind success of her first solo album, Lauryn, either a) decided that the peak of the mainstream glittering pop palace is better left to people like Gwen Stefani, or b) went off the deep end into a world of inflated self-righteousness and Bono-esque ego, depending on who's sizing her work up. Who cares. The bottom line is that Unplugged 2.0 is really a pretty decent left turn that wouldn't have been such a puzzling choice back in the 70s era, when major label artists might put out 4 albums a year, and took chances here and there. As the entire output of such a revered artist for the entire half of a decade, it's a disappointment, but a perfectly listenable one. 22 tracks on 2CDs (including interludes): "Mr. Intentional", "Adam Lives In Theory", "I Find It Hard To Say (Rebel)", "Just Like Water", "Mystery Of Iniquity", "I Remember", "So Much Things To Say", "The Conquering Lion" and more. Tasavallan PresidenttiChanging Times & Movements – Live In Finland & Sweden 1970/1971 ... LP
Svart (Finland), Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 44.99
Never-issued music from this legendary group – recorded by Finnish radio near the start of their career, and making for a fantastic addition to their classic catalog! Tasavallan Presidentti are even more full-on and jamming than on record – still with some of the shorter songs and heavier vocals from Frank Robson, who was with them at their start – but already soaring with guitar from Jukka Tolonen, and work on alto, soprano, and flute from the great Pekka Poyry – who'd later go on to make some great records on his own! The approach is less fusiony and more rocking than the group in the mid 70s – and the set lists here feature a nice array of unusual material. Titles include "Impressions Of India", "Gigolo", "Deep Thinker", "Whirlwind Nightmare", "Going Back", "Ain't Ya Coming Home Babe", "Tis Me Tis You", and "Driving Through". LP, Vinyl record album

A really great collection of unusual female soul and pop from the 60s – a package that features rare singles, unreleased tracks, and other gems we never would have heard otherwise! Few folks know 60s music as well as the folks at Ace/Kent Records in the UK – which means that you can really trust them to serve up the best when it comes to a collection of girl group music – the sort of tracks that go way past the obvious, and really get at the fantastic range of sounds that were transforming the female side of the spectrum in the US! The package features 16 tracks in all, and spans a nice mix of artists and styles – with titles that include "Too bad He's Bad" by Beverly Williams, "Cupid's Got A Hold On Me" by The Belles, "Whirlwind" by The Rev-Lons, "First Love Baby" by Lena Calhoun & The Emotions, "So In Luv" by Othello Robertson, "You Are My First Love" by Pat Hunt, "I Need A Guy" by The Lovettes, "He's All Right With Me" by The Mirettes, "Mr Everything" by Little Eva Harris, "Sing Me A Love Song" by Felice Taylor, "Sir Galahad" by The Elites, "I Say Yeah" by The Pets, "Summertime Is Surfin Time" by The Surf Bunnies, and "It's Better To Live Or Die" by Mary Saxton. ✨✧ RubbaIn Motion – Modern Progressive Group Sounds Played By Rubba ... LP
Farfalla/De Wolfe (Italy), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the more obscure sound library albums of the 70s from the Music De Wolfe label – a set of electric jazz tracks that's a bit more open and varied than the usual sound library groove – with occasional periods of instrumental intensity that really lives up to the progressive promise in the title! The tracks move between short, two minute numbers that are straight and funky – and other tracks that stretch things out a bit longer, with almost a rock fusion quality – but never too jamming or indulgent. Keyboards are the main instrumentation in the solo spots – and are used with enough variety, it would be hard to tie the record to any one sort of easy reference. Titles include "Vector", "Nebulae", "Green Star", "Moog Concerto", "Astradome", "So Softly", "Perpetual Whirlwind", and "Carousel In The Milky Way". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jake Yunza (editior)Fun – The Social Practice Of Nightlife In NYC ... Book
Powerhouse Books, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really striking book on the world of nightlife in New York – one that's put together in a way that's almost as vivid as the experience itself! The volume is half art book, half essays – and starts with a selection of writings by Michael Musto, Claire Bishop, Michael Alig, Genesis P Orridge, and others – then moves into many more pages of artwork on clubs, performance spaces, clubbers, performers, flyers, and other aspects of the scene – presented in a variety of styles, often with text juxtaposed alongside – which makes even more standard photos feel like pluggers for an event! The images move at very rapid speed – almost as if you're in a whirlwind on an endless night of clubbing – and the heavy book is softcover, full color, and 334 pages in all. Book

✨✧ DeodatoWhirlwinds ... LP
MCA, 1974. Very Good- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweet keyboard soul from Deodato – a set that steps off nicely from the strengths of his big hits on CTI, hitting a similarly flowing groove that's really great! The instrumentation here is a bit more expanded than before, but never in a way that buries the keyboards – and Deodato's right out front on a range of electric keys that get some great support from John Tropea's finely-honed work on guitar! Titles include "Havana Strut", "Whirlwinds", "West 42nd Street", and a nice cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again". And heck, even the album's version of Glen Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" manages to come off like a funk tune! LP, Vinyl record album
