Two later solo albums from Kevin Ayers – back to back on a single CD! First up is Rainbow Takeaway – a record that's a bit out of time, given all the changes that were taking place in the UK scene – but which still has Ayers doing all those wonderful things that made his solo career so great! The tunes are fantastic – filled with unusual images, and that sense of removed wit that Kevin always had, and which always made him so far less indulgent than the rest of the prog generation. And while the cover and some of the production almost hint at an AOR approach, the whole thing instead is hiding with a more unique vision underneath – maybe in the way that Phil Manzanera could do the same on his late 70s albums. Like those records, there's a lot of elements here that are hard to compare to anything else – but in a good way, as that's always been the charm of Ayers. Titles include "Ballad Of A Salesman Who Sold Himself", "Rainbow Takeaway", "View From The Mountain", "Goodnight Goodnight", and "Hat Song". That's What You Get Babe Is a record that definitely proves that talents like Kevin Ayers can't be dimmed at all – no matter what the setting! By 1980, Ayers was far from the proggy generation in which he fit so well – but the man was still a hell of a songwriter, and had a voice that was just about the only one that could do his lyrics justice – a bit like Leonard Cohen during this stretch in his career. And like Cohen's mid period records, the album doesn't always go out of its way to provide Kevin with the arrangements and production that might make them shine the most – but that doesn't stop the man himself from bringing the most out of his words – all with a quality that cares nothing about the punk and disco changes that happened in the past few years, and which just focuses on the songs. Titles include "You Never Outrun Your Heart", "Super Salesmen", "Money Money Money", "I'm So Tired", "Where Do The Stars End", and "That's What You Get". CD

Keep in mind that this vinyl has been through the regular racks – and the Bargain Basement – and some of it might have defects, most are not in sleeves, but given the 45rpm format, they can often play surprisingly well, even if they're a bit beat up. We stuff the box with at least 200 singles – but if there's more room, you'll get more too. Think of the contents as "raw material" or "space fillers" – vinyl to be used for projects, decorations, or even things like art installations or set dressing. Gerry Rafferty is best known on our shores for one big crossover AOR hit of the late 70s – but overseas in England, his career started much earlier – as you'll hear in this great set of material! The first CD in the set features two albums recorded under the name of The Humblebums – amazing early work from Gerry Rafferty – material that's completely different than his late 70s material that crossed the Atlantic in a bigger way – as the record's got this cool complexity that's not unlike some of the best folk rock experiments that were taking place at the time on Island Records! There's elements of guitar work and songphrasing that maybe also echo the generation of Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, and even John Martyn – but the songs also have some baroque orchestrations at some points, and fuller instrumentation at others – never fully commercial, and always with an acoustic core – and already-wonderful vocals from Raffterty. Titles include "Look Over The Hill & Far Away", "Steamboat Row", "Half A Mile", "My Singing Bird", "Patrick", and "Her Father Don't Lie". Next is the Gerry Rafferty album Can I Have My Money Back – a record that got circulated globally a lot more in the late 70s, to cash in on his rising fame – but which really takes off in a strong way that places him as a key talent in the folk/rock universe of the UK Transatlantic label at the start of the 70s! The songs are tighter and catchier than the acid folk generation – in part because Gerry's vocals are already completely charming, and produced with this compression that hints at Brit modes to come on mid 70s hits – but a lot more down to earth overall. Titles include "New Street Blues", "Mr Universe", "Mary Skeffington", "Make You Break You", "One Drink Down", and "Half A Chance". 2CD set features great notes, and 14 more bonus tracks! CD

A landmark album from this legendary Chicago soul jazz combo – and a record that helped set the tone for changes to come in funky jazz for the 70s! Tenorist Clarence Wheeler heads up the group – and they've got an amazing organ/bass sound that's made them a legend with funk fans for years – a groove that's filled with complicated riffing and changes, almost the "next level" of soul jazz beyond the already hip Jack McDuff groove of the Prestige years – taken into a lot more righteous territory! The grooves are totally infectious, and they echo with some of the best styles of the group's contemporaries on the Chicago scene – particularly the electric Eddie Harris combo, or the best work going down over at Cadet Records! The album features a wonderful extended version of "Hey Jude", with a million jazzy changes and loads of nice riffs (which is probably why it's been heavily sampled) – plus groovy groovy versions of Eddie Harris' "Sham Time" and Jack McDuff's "Theme From The Electric Surfboard". We're not entirely sure what a "stash box" means in terms of music – but after hearing this very groovy collection, we may well be using it as a term ourselves! The set features rare material recorded for the tiny Garland Records label in Salem, Oregon during the late 60s – but the sound and style is different than other Pacific Northwest material of that decade – often a bit sweeter and sunnier, with elements that resonate more strongly with changes taking place on the LA scene of the mid 60s – including some great harmony vocals on a few numbers, and a way of mixing slight psych touches with romping rhythms – all to to create sounds that are almost a garage equivalent of Sunshine Pop from bigger studios. First up is Me & McGill – a really special sort of album from the great Bobby Bare – a set that's a collaborative effort with songwriter Bob McDill, as you can probably guess from the title! Bob gives Bobby tunes that are nicely different than some of the mid 70s material he was recording for RCA – maybe a bit more down to earth, with less easy attempts at wit – and at a level that show a maturing Bare, in styles that are similar to some of the shifts that Merle Haggard was taking at the time. Titles include "If You Think I'm Crazy Now", "Look Who I'm Cheating On Tonight", "The Woman In Every Man's Life", "Tired Of The Road Joe", "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", and "Till I Get On Feet". Sleeper Wherever I Fall is Bobby Bare's first album for Columbia Records – a bit of a return to straighter material than some of his concept records for RCA from a few years back – material that really helps the maturing singer find a way towards some of the adult territory that some of his contemporaries were handling at the time – but all without ever sounding too commercial or mainstream, maybe a shift towards territory of some of the non-outlaw material of David Allen Coe. Titles include "Hot Afternoon", "Goin Up's Easy Goin Down's Hard", "Sleep Tight Good Night Man", "What Did It Get Me", "The Last Time", and "Rodeo Queen". Bare is a record that reunites Bobby with songwriter Shel Silverstein – the talent who really helped him reignite his music at the start of the 70s! The songs here are maybe a bit less concept, or joke-oriented than some of Silverstein's more famous material – a great reminder that Shel can be a hell of a songwriter in more conventional modes – and a few tracks on the record are by other writers too. Throughout it all, that great Bobby Bare vocal approach really makes the best of the songs – titles that include "This Guitar Is For Sale", "Too Many Nights Alone", "Greasy Grit Gravy", "Sing For The Song", and "Yard Full Of Rusty Cars". Down & Dirty is a strong live set from Bobby Bare – a singer we mostly associate with studio work, but who's clearly at home here in front of a crowd! There's maybe some slightly more rockish phrasing in some of the instrumentation – but the live presentation keeps things from ever sounding commercially overdone – and the songs are a mix of material from the kinds of singers who always bring out the best in Bobby Bare – a fair bit from Shel Silverstein, plus more from Bob McDill, Townes Van Zandt, and Kris Kristofferson. A weird little record from Bill Cosby – a set that's not as all-out funky as some of his other vocal albums, but still pretty nice overall! The style here is more bluesy than soul-based, but production is still by Fred Smith, of 103rd Street Rhythm Band fame – and the album has a sense of grit that's a lot stronger than you might guess. Many of the tunes are covers from an older R&B era, and Cosby takes them with an approach that's a bit tongue-in-cheek at times – kind of garbling the lyrics and muddying up the sound, even though we know he can sing a bit more clearly from other records! A modern minimalist watershed – and maybe one of the first indications that Brian Eno was moving onto higher ideas in his music! The album's an important release on the Obscure series from Island Records – a special imprint that was curated by Eno, as a way of giving showcase to new ideas in British music that were neither free jazz, punk, prog, or any of the styles that were getting more play on the bigger labels! Instead, Eno and Obscure was to the British avant composition world what Lovely or CRI were to the US – although maybe had the bigger role of some of the Columbia Records releases by Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and Terry Riley. The album features the beautiful title piece – "Discreet Music", a long work that relies on a simple system of delay and recall, with slight variations occurring over the space of time, due to slight occasional interference from the composer. Side two features "Three Variations On The Cannon In D Major By Johann Pachelbel" – a great reworking of the baroque music classic – which works along similar lines, taking this very familiar classical theme, and breaking it down into simple components, which are then interwoven and played in repetition, creating a strange little bit of romantic minimalism. That second piece is performed by the Cockpit Ensemble, conducted by Gavin Bryars – who also got some great early releases on the Obscure label too! LP, Vinyl record album

Pretty great stuff by Aretha – despite what the pro-Atlantic Records books say! The record is one of the first she cut with John Hammond at Columbia, and although it's not in the classic soul mode of the Atlantic sessions, it's a darn nice batch of bluesy jazz tracks that would still stand the test of time well if people weren't so hung up on the propaganda that plays down the Columbia years. Backings are by Richard Wess on most tracks, and at times Aretha's voice is recorded with a nice echoey touch that gives the material almost an R&B-ish feel. Two very different albums from Merle Haggard – both of them pretty darn great – one a duet with 60s wife Bonnie Owens, the other a great live album! Just Between The Two Of Us is one of the greatest albums that Bonnie Owens ever recorded for Capitol Records – and not just because husband Merle Haggard was along to help on vocal duets! The mixture of Haggard and Owens is quite different than some of the other country duos of the time – possibly because of some of the struggles of their own time together, which not only seems to move the music away from some of Merle's usual themes, but also has the pair being surprisingly honest and open about their melancholy moods. And although Hag's usually the main songwriter on his records, Bonnie penned most of the original songs here, recorded next to a few Bill Anderson gems too. Titles include "Just Between The Two Of Us", "A House Without Love Is Not A Home", "Stranger In My Arms", "Forever & Ever", "I Wanta Live Again", "Our Hearts Are Holding Hands", "Slowly But Surely", and "So Much For Me So Much For You". Fighting Side Of Me is best known for the reactionary title tune, quite unfortunately, since it's a really amazing document of Haggard and the Strangers at their all time best. Like most of Merle's live shows throughout the years, it's bookended by some great original tunes like "I Take A Lot Of Pride In What I Am" and "Today I Started Loving You Again", plus a travelogue of 20th Century country music – from the spare sadness of Jimmie Rodgers's "T.B. Blues" to the Western swing of "Corrina, Corrina", to Tommy Collins's "When Did Right Become Wrong", Johnny Cash's "Orange Blossom Special", Hank Snow's "I'm Moving On" and well beyond. Two CTI label gems from vibist Milt Jackson – back to back on a single CD! Sunflower is proof that Milt Jackson was easily the hippest member of the Modern Jazz Quartet – and one of the few who could really open up into different sounds away from that combo! This sweet 70s set for CTI is totally great – a whole new chapter for Jackson's vibes, and a real re-setting of the soulful modes he'd explored as a leader in the 60s. There's a wonderfully warm and chromatic feel to the set from the start – as Milt's vibes are set in fuller arrangements from Don Sebesky – with added instrumentation from Herbie Hancock on electric piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Phil Bodner on reeds. The highlight of the album is a nice long take on "People Make The World Go Round", but it's all pretty sweet, and other titles include nice versions of "Sunflower" and "What Are You Doing For The Rest Of Your Life" – and Jackson's own "SKJ" and "For Someone I Love". Goodbye is classic work from vibist Milt Jackson – opening up his bag a lot for the 70s, in a way that makes for some wonderfully casual grooves! The album's not as moodily funky as some of Jackson's other CTI records, but it is a nice batch of laidback tunes played with a distinctly soulful edge – handled by a group that features Cedar Walton on piano, Hubert Laws on flute, Ron Carter bass, Steve Gadd drums – and some guest trumpet from Freddie Hubbard on the track "SKJ". A tremendous step forward for Jazzanova – an album that's overflowing with classic soul touches, and done in a style we'd hardly have expected from the group a few years before! Jazzanova have always had an ear for older sounds in their music – which is something that first set them apart from the dancefloor pack – but this album's a really amazing achievement, and one that's put together with the solid sound of some lost late 60s sessions from Motown at points – or with some of the cooler sounds of European jazz of the 70s! There's still a 21st Century vibe to the music – a bit of crackle here and there that marks it as contemporary – but the backings also have tight orchestrations, occasional strings, and that perfectly put-together quality that still makes us marvel at old soul and jazz records after all these years. Vocals are sublime too – as the album features contributions from Phonte, Paul Randolph, Ben Westbeech, Jose James, Dwele, Bembe Segue, and Leon Ware – all of whom fit in perfectly, without any of the sort of random "vocals with sound system" feel you might get in another album of this type. In A Gospel Way has George Jones returning to some of the spiritual modes he explored earlier in his career – but with a more mature, more world-experienced voice that makes the message in the music even more powerful than before – especially since by this time, most of the world knew Jones more as a sinner than a saint. That tension really makes the music sparkle – and titles include "Mama's Hands", "Why Me Lord", "A Man I Always Wanted To Meet", "The Baptism Of Jesse Taylor", and "I Can't Find It Here". Live At The Star Club was recorded in Hamburg, Germany – and is an incredible 60s performance from Jerry Lee Lewis – proof that the man was always on fire when he worked overseas, even if his star had dimmed a bit back home! The group covers a few tracks from those groups – but it's the original material that's really fantastic, like the supremely echoey "Sly, Slick, & The Wicked", the rightous "This Is The Lost Generation", and lots of other nice ones like "Sure Is Funky", "Talking The Teenage Language", "Sorry, I Can't Help You", "Someday", "You Only Get Out Of Love (What You Put In)", and "Young, Tough, & The Terrible". The record's a really unique one – and a set that crackles with the best sort of intensity of the Candid jazz label at the time. Massey's vision here is one that's extremely progressive – open in a hardbop sort of way, but often touched with more of the modernism that was showing up in the darker corners of the Blue Note scene. His trumpet work here has a mix of sweetness and sharp edges that reminds us a lot of Johnny Coles at his best – but almost even more important is his writing and overall conception – as the tunes here are a fantastic mix of high concept ideals that never fail to groove – of a sort that would show up later in the 60s on records by Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, and others. The group here is a sextet – with Massey on trumpet, Julius Watkins on French Horn, Hugh Brodie on tenor, Patti Brown on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and GT Hogan on drums – and titles include "These Are Soulful Days", which was recorded by Lee Morgan, and "Bakai", which was recorded by Coltrane – and the tracks "Blues To Coltrane", "What's Wrong", and "Father & Son". A pair of RCA Records gems from Hugo Montenegro – back to back on a single CD! First up is Theme From The Godfather – a sweet 70s update of the moogy groovy that Hugo Montenegro first started crafting in the 60s! The album's got both moog and Arp – the latter of which brings in more of a 70s electric vibe – and there's also some very cool sound effects on the record too, which really ups the ante for the sort of groove that Montenegro was creating! Tunes are all pretty well chosen – making for a super-dope batch of numbers that really gets past the usual – and the set includes an excellent reading of "Me & My Arrow", from Nilson's The Point; 2 versions of Nino Rota tracks from The Godfather; a nice version of Faure's "Pavane", with lots of spirally keyboards; a medley of "Baby Elephant Walk" and "Moon River"; and even a few nice originals, like "Quadimodo" and "Stutterology". On 1968's Music From A Fistful Of Dollars, Hugh Montenegro makes his way through a number of late 60s Morricone spaghetti western themes, all done with his groovier than usual twist on the material! The Montenegro touches here include some augmented rhythms – snapping the tunes along with a much modder feel at times than the original – plus a nice use of electric bass at the bottom, and some sunshine-drenched vocal passages have some great harmonies! Peter Evans handles trumpet – quite a heady role, but done well – and Jon Irabagon blows both the alto and tenor sax parts, alongside Ron Stabinsky on piano, Moppa Elliott on bass, and Kevin Shea on drums. Phineas Newborn is certainly fabulous here – thanks in part to some great guitar work from his brother Calvin! The session's got a little extra "kick" than some of Phineas' other records from the time – a slightly rougher edge that comes from Calvin's raspy guitar work on most of the tunes – played in a way that steps along with the keys of the piano on the leads, but slides out on its own solos as the tunes roll on. First up is Dirt Band – a real shift in sound for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – as the group drop the "nitty gritty" for their name, and go for a well-rounded sound that shows off their songwriting in a very different way! There's little of the rootsy elements of Will The Circle Be Unbroken here – as the group warm things up in more of an AOR style, yet still include some acoustic elements too – almost going for a mix of country roots and more polished crossover modes, with a sound that's more in keeping with their LA roots than most of their other 70s records. Yet taken from the perspective of a mainstream record, the songwriting and execution are great – definitely a cut above – and titles include "You Can't Stop Loving Me Now", "Whoa Babe", "Escaping Reality", "For A Little While", "Lights", and "Wild Nights". An American Dream is a set that continues the country rock crossover sound of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – almost as if the group who preceded Poco and The Eagles were throwing their hat in the ring, and shining every bit as strongly in the 70s AOR limelight! You can definitely hear some of the charms of the earlier group here – and at some level, the vocals of Jeff Hanna are actually better without some of the wisecracking that could sometimes get in the way during the early years – a surprising shift for a group who always seemed to be a bit tongue-in-cheek, yet got more and more sincere as the years went on! A fantastic package – featuring the first five albums from this legendary group – all pressed on 180 gram vinyl in a big box set! First up is Affenstunde – some of the coolest, moogiest work to come from the German scene in the early 70s – and a record that's filled with loads of wonderful analogue electronics – spun out over these long, spacey extrapolations – and magically mixed with a host of acoustic elements too! The group is one of the most organic to ever approach this formula – and the sound here is beyond compare – hugely influential on many acts to come, but never handled this right – with such a perfect balance of simple elements and sophisticated ideas. Titles include "Affenstunde" and the three-part dream sequence "Ich Mache Einen Spiegel". Hosianna Mantra is next – a set that's still filled with all the amazing electronics of the group's previous records, but which also has even more focus and tunefulness too – yet all in a way that's still pretty darn far out overall! The album's got a slightly spiritual bent, as you might guess from the title – and the instrumentation is slightly expanded, so that there's more guitar and reed work than ever before, yet still used in a way that's pretty darn electronic. The tracks are all instrumental, and have a really beautiful sound – and titles include "Abschied", "Andact", "Nict Hoch Im Himmel", "Andacht", "Ah", and "Hosianna Mantra". Next is Eisjager & Siebenjager – a record that also has some of the group's most tuneful moments of the early 70s – and a sound that really shows them moving forward with a new sort of energy! Most of the tracks are short, and never overindulgent – yet they also show a growing skill with guitar solos, which helps bring out a rockish quality the group never had this strongly before – even though most of the record has an instrumental approach. Djong Yun sings a bit on the set, often in a moody, lyric-less way – and tracks include the side-long title cut, plus "Kleiner Krieger", "Gutes Land", "Morgengruss", "King Minos", and "Wurfelspiel". The Aguirre album is next – a set based on their initial soundtrack material for the Werner Herzog film of the same name, but one that also stretches out in a lot of new directions, too – with longer songs that really open up, although always strongly in the spirit of the original music! The sounds are from the trio of Florian Fricke on piano and keyboards, Daniel Fichelscher on guitars and percussion, and Djong Yun on a bit of vocals – all elements that are layered and processed, but at a very organic level that's very cool – so that nothing ever feels too forced, or too cold – that definite warmer side of the spectrum that Popol Vuh brought to the German scene of the 70s – and left as their legacy with great records like this! Some tracks are quite long – including the 16 minute "Vergegenwaertigung" – and titles include "Aguirre I", "Morgengruss II", "Agnus Dei", and "Aguirre II". The set finishes with a double-length version of the spooky soundtrack to Werner Herzog's remake of Nosferatu from the late 70s – featuring a spare, moody score that's quite different than some of Popul Vuh's other work. The music almost seems to bubble out of the ground like Nosferatu himself coming out of his coffin in the minutes after dusk – using light electronics to set a tone, but also employing a bit of what seems to be flute, plus occasional acoustic guitar, which has a very striking effect in this setting. Elis Regina hits the London scene of the late 60s – with amazing results that make the album one of her best from the early years! The style here is still quite bossa-oriented, but backings are done by Peter Knight – who'd worked with Scott Walker and some of the other hip British singers at the time – so the sound's a bit different than Elis' Brazilian records, too. Knight's quite sensitive to Regina's way of interpreting a tune – and he nicely follows the soaring, jazzy vibe that Roberto Menescal had given her at home. But the groove's also a bit more open and fluid too – with some slight Brit Easy touches that Really send the whole album home! The groove here is very much in the best Miami club mode of the time – upbeat, but still nicely gritty overall – more fast funk in the instrumentation, with slight touches of strings – and vocals from the quartet that slide nicely into the rhythms, which themselves bear plenty of TK touches! The whole thing's got a feel that's a lot better than you might guess from the cover – kind of a rougher take on the Gwen McCrae vibe of the time, almost set loose to do things with a more relaxed approach overall. And the vocals are surprisingly strong at points too – with one singer coming to the forefront with a deeper soul mode than you might expect. Brookmeyer's playing is great too – very different than his sparer, modernist work on other records – and very much in the tradition of Brazilian trombone players who were a key force in bossa jazz at the time. The quintet here features trumpeter Woody Shaw at his most righteous – working alongside co-leader Louis Hayes on drums – at the head of a brilliant lineup that features Junior Cook on tenor, Ronnie Mathews on piano, and Stafford James on bass! At some level, the vibe here is a hipper 70s extension of ideas that Cook and Hayes worked on with Horace Silver in the 60s – but there's also a lot more of the spiritual fire that Woody was bringing to his groundbreaking albums for Muse Records – which is underscored both by James' ultra-heavy work on bass, and the skyward-reaching sounds of Mathews on piano. Cook has a brilliant edge on his tenor – sometimes missing from other records – and titles on this second volume include "Some Other Blues", "Invitation", "Round Midnight", "What's New", and "All The Things You Are". First up is Look At Us – a fantastic moment in 60s pop – and the record that forever launched the duo of Sonny & Cher upon the world – a completely charming, if also mismatched couple whose work together is completely fantastic! Sonny had been bumping around the LA music scene for years by the time of this record – but when he found the young Cher, the pair instantly clicked – with a chemistry that's so different than so many other male/female duos of the time – partly because of the difference in their voices, but also because of the way that each of them remain completely individual, even while singing together. Titles include the massive worldwide hit "I Got You Babe", plus versions of "Then He Kissed Me", "The Letter", and "Let It Be Me". The real treat, though, is the material by Sonny – including the tunes "It's Gonna Rain", "Just You", and "Sing C'Est La Vie". On Wondrous World Of Sonny & Cher, it seems as if the pair can completely transform anything they touch with their talents! The tunes here are a mix of older numbers and a few originals by Sonny – arranged and produced by the man himself, and given an extra dose of soul, thanks to musical backings from Harold Battiste – who finds the sort of balance that also allowed these early records to cross over to an R&B market too. They hardly need harmony at all – and could never have it, either – given all the "nose" in Sonny's style – but that separation is what really makes the charm of the pair – guy/girl, young/old, perfect/imperfect – coming together with a set of very groovy tunes, all arranged and produced by Sonny – and given a nice bounce in the backings by Harold Battiste! A trio of second-period Sly Stone albums – all brought together in a single CD set! On Small Talk, Sly's still doing pretty nice for himself in 1974 – with a sound that's perhaps a bit warmer than on the early records, but still nice and soulful – and peppered with a good dose of funk! The groove is really great on the set – bubbling with a more "deep down" feel than the skittish funk of the first few records, and breaking out on some great soul numbers that show Sly to be an even better singer than before – touchingly sensitive at times, in a really beautiful way! Titles include "Loose Booty", which has a wonderful popping bass/hollow drum sound, and a tasty break in the middle – plus the cuts "This Is Love", "Wishful Thinkin", "Time For Livin", "Can't Strain My Brain", and "Say You Will". High On You is a nice little mid 70s set from Sly – one recorded without the Family Stone, but still grooving wonderfully with lots of funky edges! Sly's expanded his sound nicely here – pushing past the shorter funk of earlier years to work in some complicated instrumentation that keeps things really sounding fresh. Great examples of this are the frenetic horn bits on "Crossword", which you'll recognize from its famous Tribe Called Quest sample – or the sweeping strings on the mellow groover "That's Lovin You". The whole thing's great – and other tracks include "I Get High on You", "So Good to Me", "Le Lo Li", "Green Eyed Monster Girl", and "Organize". On Heard Ya Missed Me, Sly Stone's looking like a one-man band on the cover, but the album's definitely got the full-on collaborative vibe of his early records with the Family Stone! The main man himself has plenty of charm, and still has that wonderful ear for a sharp-tinged funky cut – but he's also working in this mode that allows for other voices to come into the mix at times, and plenty of lively funky instrumentation underneath the lyrics – which really makes the whole thing feel like a party all the way through! Titles include "Sexy Situation", "What Was I Thinkin In My Head", "Mother Is A Hippie", and "Family Again". CD

For great albums from Tangerine Dream – each packaged here in tiny LP sleeves, with a small poster too! Electronic Meditation has a title that's a perfect summation of the way that Tangerine Dream approached their music – and it also really describes what made them so unique at the time! Rather than try to push the boundaries of electronics with a sense of force or urgency, the trio of Edgar Froese, Klaus Schulze, and Conrad Schnitzler really take their time – working inside an abandoned factory to create the sounds for this initial debut – acting as their own producers, too – really starting the strong legacy of German experimental recordings of the 70s, in which the studio was as important as the instruments themselves! Given that Schulze would later work in Ash Ra Tempel and on his own famous records – and Schnitzler soon formed Kluster – there's a lot of genesis going on here. But the whole thing's also pretty darn great on its own, even without the history – and has a much darker edge than some later work by Tangerine Dream. Titles include "Genesis", "Journey Through A Burning Brain", "Resurrection", "Ashes To Ashes", and "Cold Smoke". Alpha Centauri is pure genius from Tangerine Dream – a record that came out right at the start of the 70s, and immediately cemented the group's reputation as one of the most inventive electronic acts of the decade! The tracks are long and spacious here – very much in the territory of some of the group's Krautrock contemporaries, but with more of a sense of openness, and patience – as they never rush things at all, while layering together their unique blends of guitar, organ, percussion, flute, and anything else they can think of – even a coffee machine! Chris Franke handles the electronics, but Steve Schroyder abstracts them with "several echo machines" – while Edgar Froese helps them all remember to keep things tuneful at times. Tracks include "Sunrise In The Third System", "Fly & Collision Off Comas Sola", and the side-long "Alpha Centauri". Zeit is one of the moodiest early albums from Tangerine Dream – a record that really lives up to the eclipse on the cover! There's maybe more "bottom" here than some of their other work – swirling shadows that resonate with some of the more isolated sounds – almost as if the group is trying to invent the 4AD production style, years ahead of its time! Titles include "Birth Of The Liquide Plejades", "Nebulous Dawn", "Origin Of Supernatural Probabilities", and "Zeit". Atem has long tracks that maybe bring a stronger current of noise to the music of Tangerine Dream – a set that follows the longer abstractions of the Zeit album, but with even weirder elements too! The sound isn't exactly pre-industrial, but also isn't far off either – and titles include "Atem", "Fauna Geni", "Circulation Of Events", and "Wahn". CD

The set's got a keyboard-heavy vibe – similar to the mode that Wansel brought to the studio in the late 70s, but with a different 80s spin overall – especially given the use of drum programs in most of the rhythms, and a mix of other instruments from electric sources as well. Yet given Dexter's ear for a tune, the whole thing comes together with a nice degree of warmth, and a sense of soul that's deeper than you'd expect – especially given that Virgin Records were clearly trying for a crossover hit on this one. There's some great vocals on the leadoff track by The Jones Girls – and other vocals are by Meeta Gajjar, Dr Pearl Williams Jones, and Cynthia Biggs El – who co-wrote most of the record with Wansel.
