Ilmiliekki QuartetLand Of Real Men ... CD
WeJazz (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $8.99
The long-overdue return of a combo that had a huge impact on the sound of jazz on the Scandinavian scene over the past decade or two – given that its members have been involved in such important projects as Five Corners Quintet, Tuomo, Oddarang, and the Timo Lassy combo! Yet at the core, these four musicians are all very individual, and very different than some of that work – much more jazz-based, with a creative interplay between rhythm, tone, and texture – the last of which comes through especially strong in the trumpet work of Verneri Pohjola, which is completely sublime – almost with the power of a tenorist in some ways, but very tied to the structure of his instrument. Tuomo Prattala provides some really amazing textures on piano, alongside the bass of Antti Lotjonen and drums of Olavi Louhivuori – in modes that really keep things interesting throughout. The group begins with a great instrumental reading of Laurie Anderson's classic "O Superman", and other tracks include "Ravelogue", "Land Of Real Men", "Twisted Thistle", "Afterimage", and "Lonely Lonely". Timo Lassy & Teppo MakynenTimo Lassy & Teppo Makynen (includes download) ... LP
WeJazz (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99
Music that you'd hardly expect, if you only know the more groove-oriented side of saxophonist Timo Lassy – the sounds he's given us from the Ricky-Tick years onwards – because this album is straight jazz overall, and a relatively improvised one at that! The album shows off a whole different side of Timo's talents – one we didn't know he had at all, and which really shine out here a lot more strongly than on some of his records with more programmed rhythms – thanks in no small part to the really creative efforts of drummer Teppo Makynen, who duets here with Lassy on tracks that really run the gamut – not free jazz overall, but certainly with a similar spirit – all inside, often rhythmic, but with much looser, more open, and wonderfully expressive solos than we've ever heard from Timo. Teppo's great, too – very creative on the drum kit as a whole, with lots of cool percussive effects – on titles that include "Fallow", "Goldenrod", "Aero", "Kobi", "Heliotrope", "Dark Cyan", "Firebrick", "Resolution Blue", "Catawba", and "Liberty (part 1)". Antti LotjonenQuintet East ... CD
WeJazz (Finland), 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
You might know the bass of Antti Lotjonen from years back – when he was a key member of the groovy Five Corners Quintet – but his sound has changed a lot since those years, and really deepened into a much richer jazzy style! The bass is at the core of all these tunes, but it's used to shape, structure, and color the sound, but not nearly as much as a force of rhythm – only rarely hitting the tighter swing of Antti's old group, and instead allowing for plenty of fantastic interplay between the trumpet of Verneri Pohjola, tenor of Jussi Kannaste, and alto, baritone, and sopranino sax of Mikko Innanen. There's no piano at all – just the loose, open drums of Joonas Riipa – and the album intersperses a few shorter bass moments with longer group performances, on titles that include "Erzeben Strasse", "Rowan", "Le Petit Lactoire", "Pocket Yoga", "Mary Hartman Mary Hartman", and "Oblique". ✨✧ Petter Eldh & Koma SaxoKoma Saxo (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
WeJazz (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The cover promises that "this music will melt your brain" – and while we wouldn't wish such a fate on anyone, we can say that it will definitely prick up your ears and turn you on to a whole new sound from the Scandia jazz scene! The group is led by bassist Petter Eldh, who works with drummer Christian Lillinger at the core – while a trio of saxophonists make some real magic over the top – Jonas Kullhammar and Otis Sandsjo on tenor, and Mikko Innanen on alto and baritone sax! The music has some ties to an Ornette Coleman legacy, but is freer overall – and the intensity of the horn work often gets pretty bold at times, and moves quite far from rhythm – while the drums can crackle at some points with a snap that's almost more funk than jazz – even though the record's not funky at all. Titles include "Kali Kosma", "Pari Koma", "LH 440", "Sa Rinner Tiden Bort", "Fanfarum For Komarum II", "Blumer", and "Byagz". LP, Vinyl record album
